I haven’t read much of Louise Candlish’s work so far but am keen to read more since I read her book, Our House and watched the TV adaptation.
The dual timelines are expertly woven together as we follow two characters living in two different times. In 1995, we join Rick who is living the single life in Camden. He's content with his work and socializing with his friends—until he meets Marina. She works in the same office building and her beauty is ethereal. From there on out their lives are changed irrevocably—but not necessarily for the better. As time progresses, we begin to understand why they were brought together, even if they don’t know themselves yet.
Back in the current time, we follow Alex and Beth who lived the suburban dream in Silver Vale, where Alex was a perfect husband . . . until he heard about plans for an old disused site to be converted into a nature trail. Suddenly his peaceful life took on new levels of anxiety as secrets from years ago resurfaced. With work underway, tensions rise, and Alex's comfortable lifestyle came under threat.
The author has done a terrific job at creating a sense of place and time throughout The Only Suspect. Even though it begins slowly as readers get to know the characters, it builds up quite quickly as our protagonists encounter more twists and turns than expected. I was really impressed by one particular twist that I just didn’t see coming! As things progress further into chaos, my heart raced along with Rick's until I finally reached the thrilling conclusion.
While I didn’t warm to the characters and found them quite unlikeable, certainly none that I would like to be friends with. Louise Candlish does a brilliant job of showing how the characters found themselves suddenly entangled in extreme situations in this complicated and elaborate story.
If you're looking for an unforgettable read with complex, meandering, storylines and thrilling twists, look no further than The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish. With an edgy feel from beginning to end, this page-turner will keep you glued until its final page! Get ready to experience some madness and mayhem as Rick’s world changes forever when he meets Marina—you won't be disappointed! For anyone looking for a great book to get lost in during these uncertain times.
Ohhhh, she did it again! Louise Candlish is one of those writers who draw you in, ever so slowly, waits until your guard is down, then grabs you by the throat and drags you into the pages and slams the door behind you, trapping you right until the very end!
It’s so hard to review this book without giving away any spoilers. But let’s just say, this one is filled to the brim with twists and turns that will have your head spinning like something out of the Exorcist! Told using a dual timeline, this perfectly paced and cleverly crafted novel slowly peels away the layers leaving the reader not really quite sure who they should trust.
In the present day, Alex lives a quiet life with his wife but why is he so anxious about the nature trail that’s being developed, then step back into the mid-1990s and we meet Rick, a man who has fallen in love with a woman, who is perhaps not quite who she makes out she is…or is she…
A cast of delightfully devious characters worm their way under your skin and every time you think you might have worked out what is happening, the rug is pulled from under your feet.
It’s twisted, it’s dark and completely manipulative, it will keep you up well after your bedtime!
Really enjoyed this book. The main characters, Rick, Rollo and Alex all relate aspects of what happened then when Marina came into their lives and now
Louise Candlish has done it again! Another clever psychological thriller which misdirects the reader while being impossible to put down.
The Only Suspect is told over two time lines, Rick in the mid 90s and Alex in the present. Rick has met Marina, the woman of his dreams, however the more he gets involved, the more he realises that her private life is highly complex. If he wants to be with her, he needs to sacrifice everything. In the present day, Alex is living a rather boring, settled life with his wife in the London suburbs. The development of a nature trail behind his house is about to upend all that, and potentially bring to light some very sinister events in his past.
The story races along, quickly cutting between the past and present. Just as you think you know what is going on, Louise Candlish reveals something which changes everything you had read before. This is a well written novel with a host of mostly pretty dislikeable characters, she is excellent at exposing what people will do to get what they want, particularly if cornered.
If you like a psychological drama with plenty of twists, this is for you.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another great read from a great author. Well-written plenty of suspense and intrigue. A definite must read.
Well this was a really good read with a great twist that I was not expecting. The book follows two stories one about Rick who meets and falls in love with a woman with a lot of secrets and then Alex a devoted husband living in a village that has bad memories from him and why is he so concerned about the new walking trail that is being created on his doorstep. As the stories entwine and secrets emerge it seems no one is who they say they are and the ending just blew me away.
I’d like to thank Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Only Suspect’ by Louise Candlish in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Alex lives with his wife Beth in Silver Vale and it isn’t until a disused nature trail behind their house is due to be opened that he becomes increasingly nervous that his secret is about to be revealed. The five main characters are Alex and Beth in the 2020s, and Rick and Marina who go back to the mid-1990s, with Rick’s friend Rollo.
‘The Only Suspect’ has an intriguing storyline and what first appears to be a simple plot but is anything but. Although the connection between the characters appears clearly visible from the start, the frequent twists and turns make the direction of the plot spin around so that it isn’t until the last part of the novel that the truth is revealed. I found it difficult to like the characters although I’m not sure the author expected us to, and their timelines became increasingly confusing, but the ingenuity of the story kept me reading until I reached the surprising conclusion.
I enjoyed this book. It had plenty overall to keep you interested and enough characters to get to grips with - but not too many.
The first part of the book dragged on a little bit until the twists started to get thrown at you. I've dropped a star for that as it did stagnate half-way through. However, once the story started to unravel properly I really enjoyed it right through to the end.
The story is told in a clever manner with the back-story and current story told in parallel, which I thought worked really well. This was helped by having not too many characters to keep track of - as I've read books told in a similar manner that have fallen apart with the reader (me!) trying to keep up with everybody - so hats off to the author for that.
This is my first Louise Candlish book and if another crops up on here I'll be requesting it - and that tells you it's worthy of reading.
Many thanks for the ARC.
The Only Suspect was a book I couldn’t put down! Louise Candlish you did it again, I was riveted with this storyline that is very unpredictable.
The book is told in two timelines that works really well. The first timeline is now and is Alex and Beth, married and total opposites as Alex likes to keep himself to himself whereas Beth likes to get involved with the community where she lives and her friends. Then is set in the nineties with Rick being the main character, living in Camden. He flat shares and has a girlfriend, Marina who he met at his office. In the now side of the book Alex is getting nervous as a new nature trail is being constructed at the back of his house and he’s worried what will be uncovered.
This was a really well written thriller that I enjoyed from start to finish. There were a couple of characters I didn’t really like but I think that made the book work for me even better. I never knew where this was going to go and I didn’t work it out.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Simon And Schuster for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
This gives new meaning to “it’s always the quiet ones you need to watch”. This novel is a real eye opener and possibly my new favourite Louise Candlish book.
This is a great psychological thriller that I really enjoyed.
Alex is surprised when his wife Beth tells him about the nature trail that is going to be built near their house. He’s got nothing against nature, but there’s something buried there from years ago that he doesn’t want found.
Beth can’t understand his sudden interest in the nature trail and whilst Alex is keeping an eye on things, she is concerned that he doesn’t want to be photographed.
In fact Alex shies away from social media and likes to keep his life very private.
The story is told in dual timelines, the present and then 1995 where we learn about Rick and Rollo who share a flat.
This is a bit of a slow burn but all of the detail from the past is needed to understand the outcome of the story.
A great read.
Thanks to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
I have read other novels by Louise Candlish and liked them all. This is no different.
Present day: Alex and his wife Beth are living quietly in Silver Vale a rural area. A long abandoned nature trail near their house is being reinstated which is a huge concern to Alex as he is concerned that during the redevelopment the landscapers may reveal a dark secret from his past which will change his life forever and not for the good.
Past 1995/1996: takes us back to the story of Rick and a girl he meets called Marina a beautiful but unconventional woman. He rapidly falls in love with her but soon discovers she has a troubled and complicated life which draws him into a madcap and life changing situation.
The author switches seamlessly between past and present where the secrets are revealed and we get to understand the connection between the 2 lives. There is a really big twist near the end that I did not see coming which to me makes for an excellent read.
Thanks to Netgalley UK and publishers Simon and schuster for an ARC copy ahead of release in exchange for a fair and honest review
Very cleverly written. Lots of twists and turns. I could not have guessed the way it went. A really gripping read.
Another early hours of the morning finish and a rare ‘double gasp’ read! I was left speechless!
How do you review a book like this one? The basics are it is a story told in dual timelines, Rick back in 1995 and Alex present day. The characterisation is sublime, the characters so real I was sharing their feelings throughout. There were a few frustrating moments when I wanted to shout at them to stop them being foolish. It took me a while to get my head around all the characters, probably because I was searching for links from the past to the present. Some of the characters were nasty, untrustworthy and scheming, ideal for the dark story unfolding.
The multi-layered plot is so skilfully planned and delivered, even though I thought I knew where it was going (a couple of times) how wrong was I? The pace picks up as the story evolves and I was totally oblivious to the time in the last quarter of the book.
I’m in awe of an author who can plan a story that makes me gasp in disbelief. I was left reeling and thinking back over the plot. A total belter of a story! Thrilling, exciting and a must read for psychological thriller lovers!
This crime thriller is told over two timelines, 1995 and the present. It is a tale of murder, love and deception.
I’m not going to say anymore as the story is enthralling and I don’t want to give anything away!
This is the first book I have read by this author and she sucked me into the story from the very first page. Around halfway through the story, I had a lightbulb moment. I had finally realised what was going on and had the story sussed. How wrong I was! The author weaves a tale that is so twisted and unexpected, that I wasn’t sure what to believe.
The characters were believable and everything about the story was plotted well. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
My thanks to Simon and Schuster U.K. & NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
I received an E-ARC with a request for my honest review.
This thriller is set in Silver Vale and follows Alex who with his wife Beth live together in this lovely area.
Once Alex learns that a local trail will once again be opened, his fears of a past secret being revealed start to haunt him.
Back in his twenties Rick meets the mysterious Marina, but soon his life is turned upside down with an unexpected murder.
Will Alex’s secret be exposed? What will happen to Rick?
This thriller is very twisty and dark, with not everything always being as it seems.
It is told in a dual time line with Alex in the present day and Rick in 1995, which slowly reveals the secrets lurking in the characters past.
I didn’t really warm to any of the characters which is unusual for me, but I think the mysterious nature of the storyline kept you a little at distance as the characters expose their true colours.
Overall, a twisty and dark thriller where a mans secrets are threatened to be revealed.
Alex and Beth live in Silver Vale. Alex is not very outgoing while Beth is quite the opposite. When a nature trail is developed behind their house Alex gets nervous. Something is hidden there and Alex knows what it is. He gets obsessed with watching the development, always afraid people will find out about his secret.
The story is told in two timelines. We see Alex today and someone called Rick in 1995. It is obvious that the two stories are connected but it is not sure how. Rick is a young man and he falls in love with a mysterious woman. But things get complicated and soon he finds out that he has fallen into a trap.
This is my third book from Louise Candlish and I enjoyed them both. She creates meandering and complicated stories which show exactly how the characters find themselves suddenly entangled in extreme situations. It is again a complicated and elaborate story with a lot of twists but for my taste it was painfully slow. It was almost boring and I had too much time to think about it so I figured out almost all the twist.
I would only recommend this book if you have a thing for meticulously written stories in a slow pace.
The Only Suspect follows main character Alex who seems very concerned at the local community restoring a local nature trail for some reason due to something that happened their many years ago, but why is he the only one worried about it?
Following past and present narratives the story is revealed slowly, sometimes a bit too slowly I felt. I like a good slow-burn but this was frustratingly slow at times. I also felt the ending was a bit too drawn out and quite the anti-climax
Another great book from the author. I was gripped right from the start. It was an easy read with lots of twists and turns. Highly recommended.
Well, I don't know where to start, this isn't just a thriller, it's so much more, just when you think you've got it figured out it shoots off in another direction, so many twists and turns, I couldn't put it down but I didn't want it to finish it was so good
