It took me a lot longer than I felt necessary to finish this title. I think that’s because it treads very slowly through the intertwined lives of multiple characters, with only hints at back story which were at times a bit confusing. I must admit to almost dnf on a few occasions, however, the last 3/4 of the book more than make up for it, the ending is a blow after blow of unveiled secrets and lies (most of them fairly easy to have guessed) however none the less really enjoyable if you can make it that far.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to listen to this audio book in return for an honest review.
Okay, I have to admit that I had a little higher of expectations for this one. But I did enjoy the twists!
Full of suspense, surprises, twists and darkness. This will keep you on the edge of your seat as you race through it.
This is my first book from this author and I am sorry to say I was not enamoured with the story.
Sarah (the nurse with the secret) is in my opinion a dislikeable character, she got on my nerves if I am honest. It got to the point where I could not care less of the secret the storyline was about!!!!
Nick, the leading police detective and Sarah's ex who is still in love with her should come through as a romantic side to the story but felt to me quite pathetic and I love romantic aspects to mystery/murder stories.
Sorry but it did not work for me...
The narration aspect of the book needed more distinctions between the characters as the book is written in multiple POVs.
I like most books (my average rating is 4.3). I don't rate books that I haven't finished.
This is my first (and last) book by Liz Lawler. I did not like The Nurse's Secret. I wasn't that captivated by any of the main characters. And it was so long, almost 11 hours. Maybe it was just the wrong book at the wrong time. Wrong time for me anyway. If you have your heart set on this one, I hope you like it more than I.
Thank you to NetGalley for introducing me to a new-to-me author. Thank you to the author Liz Lawler, narrator Sarah Durham and publisher Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Narrated by Sarah Durham ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great voice
Author Liz Lawler ⭐⭐⭐
Interesting story that unfolded nicely. If anything it moved a little slow for me personally, but in saying that this is the first time I've tried/heard of this author and I definitely would try her again.
When a newlywed suddenly becomes a widow, her life is thrown into chaos as the police investigate her husband's death.
I enjoyed listening to this one and it was a pretty quick read. The only criticism I had is that none of the characters were especially likeable. Some were (intentionally) unlikeable, but there wasn't really anyone I was especially invested in.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and would definitely listen to more from this author!
The Nurse's Secret by Liz Lawler Narrated by: Sarah Durham and Length: 11 hrs and 7 mins was an enjoyable audiobook I was gripped from the beginning till the end and was a great book to listen to whilst doing your favourite hobby - Crocheting. This was a psychological thriller, which is fast paced with great twists and I found it hard to turn it off. Liz's books are always a great read and this one was no different I loved it especially all the characters were brilliant.
The narrator Sarah Durham was excellent.
I really, really enjoyed this book. It was twisty and suspenseful, hard to put down. But it also embodied several elements I enjoy: the medical and the mystery <3 Highly recommended.
Sarah is a nurse, when she gets no answer from her husband while on shift, she calls the police. Soon the police arrive on ward to notify Sarah her husband has been discovered, dead, under suspicious circumstances. The detective in question, is Nick, an ex-boyfriend, but neither of them admit this to anyone. Sarah gone to stay with another nurse, Kathleen while the investigation takes place. It seems Sarah is not the only one keeping secrets. Slowly, very slowly we discover there is more to meet the eye with several of the characters.
An enjoyable, but took a while to get going. Overall, a good psychological thriller.

Review I hadn't read any Liz Lawler before, but I enjoyed this one!
I expected it to be a little like The Nurse by J A Corrigan, which I loved!
This had some of the same elements, and had lots of drama later in the book, but was a little muted at the start. The second half was great and I raced to the end.
It's a very quick read, and could easily be read in one sitting!
This was a great read that I really enjoyed. It was definitely a thrilling roller coaster ride that I didn't want to stop. This book was that good that I had to finish it in one sitting. It's a real page turner paced full of excitement twists and turns. The best thing about this book was its unpredictable ending. It was very shocking and I loved it. I thought this book had a great pace which felt fitting with the story. I loved the fact it kept my brain active trying to work out things. I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator did a great job at bringing out the atmosphere and tension in this book. I also loved her voice and pitch. I did have to speed it up a little but thats just my personal taste. This is a great book for thriller fans who love to work out what's going to happen next with plenty of characters to go through. I thought the characters were interesting and developed well. It was great fun reading this book.
So much praise goes out to the author and publishers for creating this great plot twisting story. I will be looking out for more books by this fantastic author.
The above review has already been placed on goodreads ,waterstones, Google books, Barnes&noble, kobo, amazon UK where found and my blog https://ladyreading365.wixsite.com/website/post/the-nurse-s-secret-by-liz-lawler-bookouture-4-stars either under my name or ladyreading365
I loved this book, the characters were great and although I felt like the character involved in the crime was a little predictable, there still managed to be a twist at the end I was not expecting. Loved this book and will be recommending to others
This is the story of Sarah, a nurse, who married William not too long ago. But now William is shot in the mouth and found in their home. We learn that he had been receiving anonymous calls and letters.
DS Charlie Bowden Charlie a veteran police sergeant starts to investigate. He is supported by DI Nick Anderson, who returns after he went off to London a year ago.. Now he is back and heading up the investigation into William's murder or suicide. Another nurse, Kathleen takes in Sarah to help her, but Sarah doesn't seem like a typical grieving widow... Especially when we find out under which circumstances Sarah and William got to know each other!!!
The story is twisted and takes lots and lots of turns, just how I love it! Once again I really enjoyed the narration of Sarah Durham!!!
Thank you #NetGAlley #Bookouture Audio for this Audiobook
I generally enjoyed this book and was extremely curious to find out who the murder was. I was surprised and satisfied with the unforeseen twist (the other was obvious). I look forward to reading another book by the same author
The Nurse’s Secret
Liz Lawler
OMG, OMG, OMG, WHAT A TALE!
Head Nurse Sarah Shaw and her husband William are practically newlyweds. She tried to call her him numerous times to no avail. She contacted the police and ask them to check on him. She was on duty at the hospital when the police arrived. William was dead, he’d been murdered. Detectives Charles and Nick were the lead investigators on the case. Nick and Sarah had been in a relationship; he wasn’t over her and was determined to protect her while trying to solve the murder. He asked Sarah not to mention they were previously a couple because he knew he would be removed from the case.
Sarah can’t stay at her and her husband’s home because it is a crime scene. Co-work and nurse, Kathleen, insisted Sarah stay at her home. Kathleen’s behavior became increasingly strange; she tried to take over Sarah’s life. Of course, the spouse is always a suspect.
This is a psychological thriller. I liked Sarah from the beginning of this story. You could tell she was a dedicated nurse but that doesn’t mean she does have secrets. Kathleen was beyond creepy; she was downright weird. I am still not sure I like Nick or Charlie. Nick was deeply in love with Sarah, but he also had a duty to uphold the law. Charlie was a loyal friend. Helen wasn’t especially likeable either. Author Liz Lawler presents twists and turns throughout this tale. This is sort of a hospital procedural and definitely a police procedural book. I suspected the murderer early on in this tale, then I would second guess myself only to suspect the same character again. There is more than the murder of William Shaw to be considered in this book! There are other surprises in store for the reader. Oh, how I want to tell you what they are but that wouldn’t be fair now would it.
I enjoyed the book and the narration. I love a good psychological mystery. I have not read many with a medical basis so the autopsy writing was a bit to graphic but easy enough to skip.
The author did an excellent job with her character descriptions of Sarah, Nick, Charlie, Kathleen, Joe , Izzy and Helen . I really enjoyed reading about Charlie and getting to know him. Sarah saw much character development from beginning to end. I found myself pulling for Nick and Sarah. I loved the idea he loved her so much he would jeopardize his career. Turn around Nick !
That pertains to the last part of the story. A romance in a murder mystery is a nice touch !
5 stars. Will look for this author again. Thank you for allowing me to listen in exchange for my views
I managed to get to three quarters of the way through this book and decided to discontinue. Sadly, the story development runs at a snails pace and couldn’t find anything to like about any of the characters. I really don’t like not finishing books but this one really wasn’t for me. I’m sure others will enjoy it and I’ve enjoyed other books by this author this one was just too slow for me to hold my attention.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'The Nurse's Secret' by Liz Lawler.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 31st October 2022.
This is the second book that I have read by this author. I have also read 'The Next Wife' which I would also highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing synopsis. I am also a huge fan of Liz Lawler and if this book is half as good as 'The Next Wife' it is guaranteed to be a page turner. The synopsis stated that this book is 'An addictive psychological thriller that will have you glued to the pages until the final shocking twist. Perfect for fans of K.L. Slater, Shari Lapena and Clare Mackintosh.' I am a massive fan of K.L Slater and Shari Lapena so am looking forward to see if it lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 66 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Bath, England , UK 🇬🇧 . I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture the scenes. I have, in fact, visited Bath so am hoping to be able to set the scenes smoother in my head.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Sarah Shaw, Nick and Charlie. The benefits of books written in third person with several protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is extremely well written and the fantastic descriptions definitely add to the dark atmosphere. The synopsis and the cover worked very well with the plot. I am most definitely looking forward to reading more books by this very talented author.
The storyline is extremely compelling and addictive as well as very dark. It was a slow burner but starts picking up later on in the book. It is character driven and has a fantastic mix of medical and police procedurals. It is filled with secrets, tension and a fantastic twist that the book builds up to. The fact that Liz has done her research so a huge WELL DONE to Liz as its a huge disappointment when authors don't do any or enough research into their subject and the book is then littered with unnecessary mistakes. I enjoyed that we get to see the perspectives from three characters with two being detectives and one a nurse. It is an intriguing and compelling read that will keep you guessing throughout.
This is only the third book that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the third time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Sarah Durham who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Amalia did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Liz but also to listening to more books narrated by Sarah!
The characters all played their roles very well. Each of the characters seem to have their own hidden secrets that I was intrigued to discover. I was never sure who I should or shouldn't trust throughout. I had mixed feelings on the characters but whether I liked them or not they all work perfectly together to make this such a page turning read.
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read an excerpt of Liz's absolutely gripping 'The Next Wife' which is another addictive page turner and one I have read myself and would highly recommend!!
Overall an intriguing and page turning medical and police thriller.
Genres covered in this novel include Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Psychological Fiction, Drama, Medical Thriller, Police Procedural, Women's Crime Fiction and Psychological Thriller amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of K.L. Slater, Shari Lapena and Clare Mackintosh.
368 pages/11 hours 7 minutes.
This book is £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free on kindle unlimited, £20.03 on audiobook and £9.99 in paperback at time of review via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 4/5 (I enjoyed it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Sarah is a nurse at the hospital and love what she does. She married William a few months ago and now is told he is dead. Complications arise when the detective, Nick, she dated for a couple of years, is the lead on the case. Nick has no idea why she ended their relationship and is still in love with her. William’s first wife died in the same hospital where Sarah works. There is some discussion over her death. William was a teacher and the students loved him. It is not just the nurses who have secrets. Nick, his friend Charlie, the students at school, and the deceased had secrets too. All the secrets kept me engaged. The attention Sarah got from a nurse colleague and her husband was creepy. Waiting for the next secret to be revealed kept me reading. Great book!
