I requested this because it looked promising, but I was very disappointed.
The idea was there, I liked it, but the execution was not it. Too much repetitiveness and clichés that when I got to the actual plot twist, I was already severely underwhelmed.
With that being said, if you're an avid thriller reader, I don't think this book would be for you. I think it would be more suitable for a complete thriller beginner.

✨The Narrators did a wonderful job. I love it when an audiobook has more than one narrator, it makes the experience that much better for me. Plus the pace was fast, so, bonus points.
Dislikes: ⚠️⚠️⚠️ CONTAINS SPOILERS ⚠️⚠️⚠️
"Things are about to get very crazy pretty fast."
"Neither of us are thinking about closing that door as we pick up where we left off in the house. I wish we had been. I wish we had stopped and thought about things for a second. If so, it would've spared both of us everything that was to come next."
"Little did I know it then, but my thirtieth birthday, was going to be the night I met somebody I would end up sharing a lot with in my future. The good times, and the bad. Somebody else's life was about to be changed by me coming into it, and that somebody was eventually going to end up hating me too."
✨All this foreshadowing ruined the suspense for me. Now I knew exactly what to expect, and I saw the plot twists coming a mile away.
✨Too much repetitiveness. It was either 10 year old Grace wondering if she should just come clean to her mom or no. Or the present Grace wondering if she should just let the couple in the cabin out.
✨Camilla trying to be mysterious. You're not being mysterious at that point. It was too much like "What's wrong? Nothing, I'm fine."
="How did you get to Grace?"
-"You'll see"
="I've never seen her react like this before, what did you say?"
-"let's just say, this isn't the first time we've met."
="what do you mean?"
-"you'll see."
And so on.
✨Admitting to committing murder thinking she'll get away with it, only to find out that she's being recorded. That was my least favorite part of the book.

Grace comes home a day early to find a woman’s bra and clothes scattered on the floor of her house. She finds her husband and the woman predisposed in her husband’s cabin in the backyard. Grace is understandably angry. While she figures out what to do about the situation Grace decides to lock the pair in the cabin. What will it take for Grace to let them out of the cabin?
Daniel Hurst has a talent for writing intense thrillers. I was riveted to the book, listening intensely to find out what happened next. The narrators were unreliable, which is something I really enjoy. I also enjoyed slowly learning about Grace’s past. It led to more understanding of the current situation. The use of a male narrator and a female narrator was very helpful. It made the POVs clear and easy to follow. The end was a bit of a shock! I highly recommend this book to anyone that likes domestic thrillers as well as anyone that really enjoys unreliable narrators!
*Thank you NetGalley*
Daniel Hurst is a skilled writer, and his books are very engaging. This one teaches us that lying doesn't pay and that getting even can feel oh-so-good.....for a moment or two.
Grace and Dominic, a married couple, are in love and enjoying life. Dominic discovers that resentful women should not be taken lightly after creating a backyard man cave.
When a work is written in dual POVs, as this one is, the employment of a male and female narrator is welcomed. I appreciate different narrators for each POV. The male and female voices were easy to distinguish between the characters, and both Eilidh Beaton and Matt Bates were strong narrators, Their great pacing and ability to add extra personality to the characters really made this a satisfying listen.
I loved the book and would highly recommend it!
What would you do? You return home unexpectedly from a work do to find your husband having sex with someone who isn't you in the cabin at the bottom of the garden. You lock the door and leave them in there don't you? Well that's what Grace's has done but what now?
This is a fast paced thriller told from the perspectives of Grace and her husband Dominic. As the story moves on, we learn a bit more about Grace with glimpses from her past and there is definitely more to her than meets the eye.
With great characters, although not particularly likeable, an engrossing story with some unexpected twists and all told by the excellent narrators who really bring the characters and story to life, this was an enjoyable and easy listen and my thanks must go to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to and share my thoughts of The Couple in the Cabin.
I enjoyed this pacy thriller. It seemed to finish very abruptly, but it did tie up all the strands of the novel.
It did feel a little predictable, but that definitely comes from having read so many thrillers. I think it’s easy to predict what’s going to happen when you’ve read so many and seen lots of twists.
The narrators were good and kept my attention.
There is revenge…then there’s REVENGE!
Returning home from a work event early one night, Grace finds her husband Dominic “entertaining” a younger woman in his shed behind the house! So classy!🙄
All rational thought disappears out the window! Instead of opening the door and yelling, screaming, crying…she takes a totally unexpected approach. Grace locks them in the cabin! Maybe she found it easier to lock them away…perhaps because this isn’t the first time?💁♀️
This was another speedy thriller from Daniel Hurst! The premise was rather unique with a few good twists along the way!
The two narrators did a fabulous job with the characters! I enjoyed both equally.
Daniel Hurst seems to be releasing books at breakneck speed…and I still have a few older ones to listen to! But I’d better hurry because I’m sure he has another one set for release!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio
Grace, married to Dominic Brown, has secrets. Dominic loves his log cabin at the bottom of the garden. He works from it four days a week and also uses it for leisure at weekends and he considers it to be state of the art. Grace works as a buyer and one day she travels to a networking event that involves an overnight stay at a nearby hotel. The event finishes but Grace isn't enjoying herself so decides to return home early...
The audiobook was narrated by Eilidh Beaton, and Matt Bates; listening to the story was a good decision and I thought it was narrated well with both engaging voices bringing the necessary worth and verve to the proceedings. Overall, The Couple in the Cabin is a super, intriguing, tale that homes in on revenge, deception and manipulation. Very highly recommended.😊👍🔑⚱️
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture Audio via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
I enjoyed the couple in the cabin, The idea was simple, a woman comes home from a work event early and finds her husbands clothes and mysteriously, ladies items strewn across the house and I loved the way Graces mind tried to make sense of what is quite obvious to the reader. And when she catches Dominic in his garden cabin with his lover her answer is to lock the door. The way Daniel Hurst weaves the story between the present and the past was very good as there was a lot more to Grace than meets the eye.
The audio book was very well read by Eilidh Beaton, Matt Bates and enhanced the listening.
4.5⭐️ - If I hadn’t made the grave mistake of starting this so late last night, I would have devoured it in one sitting. This was a fun one!
This was a fast paced thriller with a fun idea behind it all. Grace comes home unexpectedly to find her husband engaged in an affair with a younger woman in their back garden cabin. She proceeds to lock and trap them in the fortified building. Going back and forth between the perspectives of Grace and her husband, Dominic, we find out more about Grace’s past. This may not be her first experience in a situation like this.
Grace and Dominic, in their own ways, were harder to empathize with in the beginning. Pretty obviously with Grace because she starts off playing amateur prison warden and Dominic is literally cheating on his wife, but I found myself not able to entirely love or hate either of them by the end. Grace was a bit wild and definitely not entirely okay, but honestly I was rooting for her and I hoped she could work through some of her stuff by the end.
This was a fun story and one I zoomed through quickly. Not every twist was unexpected, but all of them made for a good story. No big complaints there. Unexpectedly, the big life lesson from this is to always make sure your fancy fortified cabin can be unlocked from the inside, so you can’t be trapped inside it by anyone 🙃✌🏻
3.5+ stars
This wasn’t my first book from this writer, and it won’t be my last. I enjoy the dramatic, suspenseful plots, the unbelievable twists, and the interesting character development/revelations. The story doesn’t necessarily stand out among the slew of other domestic thrillers I’ve read recently, but it does fit in nicely with other big stories in the genre. I’d be interested in checking out some of the writer’s other books in the future.
The Couple in the Cabin by Daniel Hurst captured my attention from the summary on the back. I was intrigued by the premise of a couple being locked in a cabin by a woman who knows them. I mean who wouldn't be interested in a book about a woman scorned by her cheating husband. Since this is a thriller, I knew there would be a lot of twists and turns.
The book is pretty much summarized by the synopsis on the back of the book. Grace, comes home and finds her husband, Dominic, entangled with another woman, Camilla. This enrages and hurts Grace to the point that she snaps. On impulse she immediately locks Dominic and Camilla in the cabin built on their property. This cabin is not any normal type of cabin, it is an impenetrable fortress. And to top it off the cabin only locks from the outside and Grace is the only one with the key. The windows are reinforced, there is no bathroom inside the cabin and the couple only have wine. How long will Grace keep Dominic and Camilla locked up? Will they survive? What can they do to get out of their predicament? Who is Grace and why was she capable of locking people away? Or was it just a mistake? Has Grace trapped people in a cabin before? Are there more secrets to be revealed?
I think all books have great things about them and this book was no different. I liked that this book was narrated from Grace and Dominic's perspective. And then we got a little bit of backstory to incidents that happened in Grace's life. The narrators to the audio book were really good. This was a very quick read at a little over 6 hours. I was able to read this book in about 3 days. I really wanted to know what would happen.
With that being said, there were a few things that I just could not get over. I had to suspend a lot of reality in reading this book. I mean a fortress/cabin that only locks on one side and is so impenetrable that no one can get out of it even if there is a fire. I know for me, if I am building a fortress, I am making sure I have a way out as a backup plan. The number of times Dominic says my mistress is incomprehensible, its repeated almost every other page. The twists were predictable, and the explanation and epilogue did not make much sense.
After reading this book, I find it hard to recommend with high stars. I give it 3 stars just because the narrators were really good. But the book itself is more of a 2.5-star book. There was just so much that was not realistic and yes, I know a book is a way to get away from reality, but I just could not buy in to a lot of the plot. Overall, I had a lot of high hopes for this book but feel a little let down. The premise held a lot of promise and could have been a book to keep me on the edge of my seat.
Thanks for NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this for my honest review.
Firstly, I am thankful for the opportunity to have received a free advanced copy of this Audiobook through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
I have read a couple of books from this author before and have enjoyed them and this one did not disappoint.
Grace is shocked to find her husband Dominic having an affair in their backyard cabin.
She needs time to think what she is going to do about this. But how far will she go to get revenge and what secrets is she holding onto from the past?
A gripping read, with some unexpected plot twists. I enjoyed this one. 4 Stars from me!

This was a riveting story! Grace unexpectedly comes home early from an evening business event to find another woman’s bra and then a trail of clothes in her house. She discovers her husband “in action” with another woman in a man cave of sorts that they had built in their backyard - or back garden, as this is a British story. She then proceeds to lock them in that cabin. I can’t say too much more without giving away some of the twists and turns in this short novel. I listened to the audiobook and the two narrators (for the male and female main characters) did a wonderful job: Eilidh Beaton and Matt Bates. The story is told in the first person so you really get into that person’s thoughts.
I did shake my head at the idea that the design of the cabin meant they couldn’t just unlock the door and walk out, but then there wouldn’t have been a story!
This is the first book by Daniel Hurst that I’ve read (listened to!) and I suspect it will not be the last.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to an advance copy of this audiobook. All opinions are my own.

“The Couple in the Cabin” is a thriller told from the alternating perspectives of Grace and her husband, Dominic. After a work event, Grace decides to return home for the evening instead of following through on her original plan to sleep in a hotel overnight. To her shock and horror, she discovers Dominic with another woman mid-copulation in the cabin at the back of her garden. Without thinking, Grace acts quickly, locking the naked couple in the cabin.
Unfortunately for Dominic and Camilla, the other woman, the cabin was built with security in mind, making it impossible to escape without unlocking the door from the outside. They are trapped in the cabin while Grace decides what to do with them. Despite their protestations, Grace is reeling, and in her emotional state she is unwilling to let them out. The thing is: this might not be the first time Grace has done something like this.
This thriller fell a bit flat for me. The premise was okay and there were some twists and turns toward the end, but it was generally a bit monotonous and predictable. The characters were okay, but not all that engaging. I did not feel emotionally invested in their lives. It was a decent quick read, and the author’s writing did keep me in it until the end. The problem was the story arc was not all that exciting. The story just basically hummed along at the same level throughout. There were twists, but nothing too surprising or really thrilling. I wish the story just had a little more oomph.
My copy of this book was an audiobook, so I would like to comment on the narrators. I felt that they both did a good job. The male narrator had good pacing for the storyline, and his various voices were well done. The female narrator also had good pacing, but I was not a fan of her male voices.
Overall, this book was middle-of-the-road for me. It was an okay book and a quick read. The author’s writing style was done well enough to keep me in the book through the final conclusion. However, I am a longtime thriller fan, and this book unfortunately did not live up to my discerning taste and expectations. That being said, this book might be a good choice for people new to the thriller genre, both adult readers and older young adult readers.
A fast-paced and somewhat madcap thriller, The Couple In The Cabin is the kind of read that you think you have sussed out, but that will then take you on a wild journey that you can't help but find enjoyment in its twists and turns.
Told in two first-person narratives - from the wife, Grace, and her husband, Dominic - I loved seeing the story from these different perspectives - one from the outside, and one from the inside. However, I couldn't warm to either character. I found Dominic to be too egotistical so I wanted his revenge to be much worse. And although I applauded Grace's actions to teach her husband a lesson, it seemed obvious from the synopsis that she had a secret, so I couldn't allow myself to trust her.
Still, there's always something fun about messed up or annoying characters hell-bent on causing some trouble and getting what they deserve. And with this being such a quick read, my intrigue constantly remained high.
At first, I felt like everything seemed quite straightforward and as though I had everything figured out, so I did start to wonder if there was anything more to the story. And then the brilliant twists came into play and gave me something to be excited about again, so it really picked up the pace by the end.
Narrated by Eilidh Beaton and Matt Bates, The Couple In The Cabin is a quick and engaging book to listen to and I loved having the two voice actors for the different narratives, which made this a very easy story to follow.
I don't know if it was because the dialogue was a little simple or if the accents were a little sarcastic at times, but I did find this to be a very cheesy thriller. Some will love that as it is quite a ludicrous plot with very eccentric characters, so I suppose it suits the story very well. For me, it took away some of the suspense, almost putting up a barrier to my enjoyment as it prevented me from really getting behind the characters.
But while I did have a few niggles with this one, I found the overall story very original, the exploration of obsession very interesting, and the great twists really did make all the difference.
A young girl that has a thing for locking people up, grows up into an older woman that has a thing for locking people up…..
A riveting psychological thriller filled with plot twists, The Couple in the Cabin was very entertaining! This was well-written and I thought the narration was done effectively.
I liked the ending, but the epilogue was a little far-fetched. I also was not a huge fan of how everything had to be explicitly explained instead of letting the reader infer based on what we were presented with.
Things that annoyed me so much I almost DNF:
1. Grace constantly referring to her husband, Dominic, as "my man"… like nails on a chalkboard to me.
2. The constant, repetitive internal dialogue. Insert eye roll here.
Overall, it is a unique plot that I was definitely intrigued by but there were a few elements I had issues with.
Big thank you to Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
This was the first Daniel Hurst story I have read or listened to and it was really good! I can now happily add this author to my list for psychological thrillers!
I didn't particularly like Grace nor Dominic and as the story went on I ended up disliking them both more and more, but for different reasons. The fact that these characters weren't my type of people did not stop this from being a good book. It was hard to know what would happen next which meant that I just had to keep listening until I found out how it all ended as soon as possible, but the end took me a bit by surprise.
Oh my goodness! This is so addictive and what a corker of a storyline! I absolutely loved it! It’s gone into my top 10 books of the year!
Daniel Hurst has such a great way of telling stories. He takes his writing to another level of suspense for me. I find his chapters are packed with thrills and little nuggets of conflict which keeps you interested in the story. This really kept momentum and you can help but think about it when you know you have other things you need to do.
I’m really looking forward to his books as each time I’m I finish with one I’m left bereft that it’s ended.
I started listening to this but it was just so cringe I had to stop. "Come on, big boy" the 24 year old office temp says to her middle-aged co-worker, who describes her as his "saucy mistress" before they talk about all of the rooms they've had sex in. This is the chapter after the unsuspecting wife waxes lyrical about her lovely unimaginative husband on her way home early from a work event. I just couldn't deal with it. Do people really talk and think like this? It's such a cliche.
Wow this audiobook was amazing
The narrators did a great job at telling the story and I was engrossed the whole time. I listened to the first 50% straight and didn't even realise it had already been that long.
This was my first Daniel Hurst book, I've seen so many rave reviews of his work and I was excited to give this a try
The story was told in mixed POV and at various timelines, so it's never boring. It's twisted, and the main character is very well developed. The ending was not a full shock however I loved it. There is not one minute of book that is slow and the end line is just * BRILLIANT *
Thank you Netgalley, Bookouture & Daniel Hurst for the audio ARC of this book!
