This was my first read by Daniel Hurst and it will not be my last! The Couple In The Cabin is a twisty and fast paced locked room thriller. I could not stop listening to this one and it helped that both narrators had lovely voices. This book did have a very interesting plot and the narrators definitely added great flair to the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this audiobook ARC!
4.5 happy stars for me.
Gripping from start to finish, what a rollercoaster that was!
All of the characters including the nosey neighbours brought colour to the story. Fast paced, with some really interesting points made and views expressed. I learnt a few things!!
I haven't read or listened to any of this authors books previously, but I'll definitely be looking out for more of them. Sometimes it's worth being late to a party, because now I've got a heap of new to me books to read!
Great narrators too.
Thanks so much Bookouture Audio, Bookouture, via Netgalley, for gifting me an audiobook copy for review - can't wait for more!
The Couple in the Cabin is a quick, enjoyable read! Unlike many books that are labeled as such, this actually is a psychological thriller, and a good one too. The story is told from the viewpoints of a married couple, Grace and Dominic. It opens with Grace coming home earlier than expected from a business trip after catching a ride with another attendee. When she arrives, she finds her husband in a compromising position in the cabin in their backyard. She makes her presence known and then locks them in the shed, which was built to be impenetrable.
Turns out, this isn't the first time she has done something like this. Through flashbacks to the past, we learn of Grace's prior history of locking someone up and the fallout and how that led her to do what she does in present day. We also hear from Dominic as he finds out that he may not know his wife at all.
The actual details of what happened in the past and in the present are not necessarily believable, but they work for this story. The ending is wrapped up a little too neatly for me, but I finished the book satisfied. Would definitely recommend this book. I have never read this author but will be checking out his other works.
At this point I am just going to be reading all this authors work. This book hooked me from the beginning and didn't let go. I finished it in less than 2 days. I loved the premise and how it was done. I liked the flashbacks as well. Although I liked this book, I thought the ending was a little lack luster. Again not bad but not really what I was hoping for.
Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy!
Great plot to this book, I wasnt overly keen on the characters but it didn't take away from the overall story.
I didn't see the unexpected plot twists coming and was gripped throughout.
Narration was very good and easy to listen to.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this audiobook, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
A psychotic little girl grows up into a psychotic woman... That's the premise of this book by Daniel Hurst. It's my first ever read by him and I have to say I'm impressed! I'll definitely be checking out his other works. The narrators both did an excellent job here - we have a handful of different characters/POVs and I could distinctly tell who was talking at each chapter. Well done. The lesson I'm going to take away from this is that a leopard never changes it's spots. A psychopath will always present as such, no matter their age.
Thanks netgalley for giving me the audiobook so that I can share my thoughts and opinions with y'all 💛
4.5⭐ rounded up for the audiobook.
Featuring ~ dual 1st person POV, dual timeline, childhood storyline, infidelity, locked room, revenge
Grace & Dominic have been happily married for years, or so Grace thought, until she walked in on Dominic and his mistress in a compromising position. She does what any sane wife would do and locks them in the cabin they are caught in.
I really liked this plot, but not the characters so much. It's fast paced with twists and turns, and secrets coming back around to bite ya in the rear.
I think this is my second book by this author and I'm not really sure why I haven't read more, so I'll have to rectify that asap.
Narrated by Eilidh Beaton and Matt Bates for 6 hours and 45 minutes, easy to follow at 2x. I'm so happy there were two narrators and they both did a lovely job.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This one was pretty good. I listened to it within two days. The beginning was better than the last third of the book. Some parts made me laugh out loud about her locking her husband and his lover in the shed and burning all their stuff.
The connections tied everything up but I could have done with some slightly different ending.
Narrators did a good job.
SPOILERS!!!!!!
Great read! Daniel Hurst hit this one out of the park. I feel like people are misunderstood most of the time, but in this case, the facts are there. Our lovely main character has some issues. Her victims’ family has figured her out. Wow! The ending kind of made me want a part 2. Will she get out of the psych ward? Will she be able to con someone else into loving her? Will her mother actually make an effort to understand? Will Dominic make an effort to not divorce her? He seems like another victim with memory loss because the end of the book made me it seem like he’s totally blaming the wrong person (not his wife but everyone else).
I whizzed through this book as it kept me totally gripped. It was one of those books where you want to shout at the protagonist as you get so frustrated with their behaviour. But that’s a good thing in this case. Nice touch at the end too
The Couple in the Cabin by Daniel Hurst had me intrigued from the summary. I love the back and forth between Grace, young Grace, and Dominic and how everything is revealed. And the ending!! I did not see it all coming. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Solid 5 stars.
Eilidh Beaton and Matt Bates were great narrators for the story. Eilidh did an impressive job of sounding like a young Grace.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio for providing me with an ALC.
The Couple in the Cabin
I went into this audiobook without reading any blurb to give me an idea about it’s storyline, although I knew that it’s genre is Mystery & Thrillers which I love. First, thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the audiobook copy. 😍
Grace and Dominic, the married couple, had a major obstacle when Grace caught Dominic in the arms of another woman. What did she do at the time? She locked them both in the cabin.
Everything that happened before and after this will surely shock the reader, because it was what I felt. It helped a lot that the narrators are both so good in conveying the feelings of the characters. I’m glad I requested for this. The story is fast-paced, so you’ll never notice you’re almost done. I recommend this to everyone who loves this genre.
Quite an interesting read...
At first, I thought "There is no way you can write an entire story about a couple trapped inside a cabin and still keep me interested!"
But... here we are!
This is a story so much deeper than a woman scorn... It is definitely worth your time!
This book was super quick! It was short and to the point in a way I really enjoyed. When Grace walks in on her husband cheating on her she locks him in the back garden cabin while trying to decide how to handle the situation.
This story seemed really straightforward at first but took some twists I really wasn’t expecting. I liked the scenes from Grace’s childhood a lot. Overall, it was a really fun ride
4 stars
Oh, this is a fun one!
Grace and Dominic are bound in a marriage filled with some truly creepy secrets, and the central events of this novel reveal exactly how surprising and dangerous one's partner can be without them having the slightest clue.
The novel begins with Grace's discovery of Dominic's infidelity, and her reaction to this information is MEMORABLE. This is also when readers begin to question which of these two - or is it someone/something else entirely?! - is the top creep. A lot of the excitement here comes from trying to figure out exactly that answer and also from flashbacks that reveal pertinent details in surprising ways.
The day I started reading this was one of the most traumatic I've ever experienced, and at a time when I had no capacity to really think or function in the most mundane circumstances, I was still engaged and entertained all the way through this listen. If that's not an endorsement, I don't know what is. In fact, my only minor gripe is that there wasn't a bit more of it to enjoy.
I'm looking forward to reading (or hearing) more from this author in the near future and recommend the audio version of this one when/where available.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for gifting me a digital ARC of this wonderful novel by Daniel Hurst and perfectly narrated by Eilidh Beaton and Matt Bates- 5 stars!
Hell knows no fury like a woman scorned! When happily married Grace returns home early and unexpectedly from a work event, she discovers her husband, Dominic, with another woman in his backyard man cabin. She reacts quickly and locks the pair inside the cabin. Dominic and his mistress are desperate to get out. But has she done this before?
This was the perfect combination of mystery, dark humor and just plain entertainment - a fabulous audiobook! Told in the POV of both Grace and Dominic, we learn the backstory of their relationship and their pasts. You can't help but feel for Grace. Plus, it was so helpful to have two good narrators for each POV - they were both great and it made for seamless listening. This was my first book by this author - I definitely need to read more of his books. I couldn't put this one down!
Grace decides to come home early from a work conference and finds her husband in the outside cabin with another woman! Grace decides the best thing to do is lock them in.
I listened to this on Audio and it was really enjoyable, fast paced and kept my interested through out. There is a little back and forth through timelines but tmits easy to follow and doesn't get confusing. When the twist was revealed I did think ahh I should of seen that coming! But I didn't so was quite surprised even tho I did find it a tad unrealistic.
Overall a quick one to get through and kept me entertained throughout and the narrators where really good too.
Thanks to Netgalley for the Arc.
The Couple in the Cabin on audio book was a great way to spend the day. Daniel Hurst writes well, and his books are entertaining. In this one we get to learn that cheating doesn't pay and revenge feels good. For a while.
Married couple Grace and Dominic are living the good life and in love. Then Dominic builds the equivalent of a man cave in the backyard and learns that scorned women are not to be taken lightly.
The use of a male and female narrator is much appreciated when the book is told in dual POVs as this one is written. It was easy to keep track of the characters because of the man/woman voices and both Eilidh Beaton, and Matt Bates were well cast for narration.
I totally enjoyed the book, don't tell my husband but I was Team Grace all the way and admired much of her oomph. It would have been 5 stars for me.....except for the ending. It was unsatisfying and unbelievable and I even replayed the last two chapters to see if I had missed some detail.
Overall I'd recommend, but wish the end had more twist.
Thanks to NetGalley, Daniel Hurst and Bookouter Audio for the opportunity to read an advance copy of The couple in the Cabin. I found this novel to be exciting, funny (in some places), and a real delight to read. The characters were strong and believable. The book is a departure from the routine tropes in so many of these thrillers (I. e. audultery, amnesia, and uncontrolled murder and mayhem) and was a delightful surprise in that respect. Daniel Hurst has improved on what he’d already established - a good, strong writing ability in the genre of psychological thrillers.
Whew! What an amazing book/audiobook!
Everything changes when Grace comes home and catches her husband, Dominic, with his mistress in his mancave/office in their Garden. Talk about being blindsided! She is devastated, heartbroken and beyond angry. She closes the door, locks it, and fumes. How could he do this to her?
Dominic and his mistress try to get out. They shout, beg, and try their best to get out. Will they be trapped forever? Will Grace let them out?
The Couple In The Cabin is told through both Grace and Dominic's POV. Such a great way to tell this story. I loved both of their POV's and getting into their heads. Through Grace's POV we learn that she may have done something similar in the past.
This book was so much fun! I didn't want to stop listening when life got in the way. This audiobook was gripping and had two amazing narrators. I was fully invested in the well thought out and thrilling book. Daniel Hurst has wowed me once again!
A gripping thriller which I loved both for the plot and the narration!
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
