This was a really lovely read. I found it a bit difficult to get into at the beginning but it turned out to be a good one. I really enjoyed all the side characters and how much they brought to the story.

I’m giving this 5 stars because I could not put it down - I just HAD to know what happened. I kept waiting on something major to happen and knew it was just around the corner - I mean, it’s called The Back Up Man but said man isn’t introduced until over 30% into the novel so I knew SOMETHING was coming. It was a sweet story about personal growth in the end, but I was dying for an epilogue or something more juicy as it finished. It was lovely to read a book set in Scotland, as well.

The Back Up Man was right up my street!

The story starts with a break-up after a long-term relationship. Our protagonist finds a promise signed by her teenage boyfriend that sends her off on a long trail...what an interesting premise! In the meantime, she is busy setting up a catering company and moving in with her husband – these side plots were strong and kept me interested. The book had some genuine laugh-out-loud moments, but also dealt with some more serious issues in a sensitive way. It focuses on relationships and ways of looking at the past and has plenty of adventures.

A definite five-star read for me. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
