I gave up on this book. I tried several times to get into it but I couldn't. The main character was so annoying. She was self obsessed and just an all round unlikeable person. Unfortunately not for me.
Seven Exes by Lucy Vine is a book for any woman who looks back at her dating life and wonders "What the hell was I thinking ?". Filled with heart and humour , this is a quick read that still makes you think , and celebrates the value of friendship. The premise is simple, Esther is on a night out with her best friends when she finds an old magazine which featured an article about the seven exes that every woman has in her life before she finds Mr Right and settles down happily ever after. In a somewhat drunken and melancholic state Esther feels like the article was written with her in mind and decides that she will reconnect with each of her exes to see if she can grow and learn from the experience, and maybe even find her happy ever after along the way. It was fun to delve into the past and see how her experiences have shaped the Esther of today, and to see the growth and development of the friendships which are clearly so valuable to her. So many times I wanted to laugh aloud as I was reading, and there was one description of a horrendously bad kiss that had me literally squirming. The premise might not be the most original but it is well handled and I am sure lots of readers will enjoy this book.
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.
Engaging and exciting from the beginning. A very realistic feel for the reader.
An irresistible slice of escapism and a joy to read. Compelling, absorbing and highly entertaining. Fast-moving and fun!
I wanted to love Seven Exes but honestly, I didn't really warm to Esther so it made it difficult. I will say that it is quite a funny book, there are some.laugh out loud moments and the relationship between Esther, Bibi and Louise is sweet and the ending is satisfactory but Esther's behaviour at times really irritated me. She was quite self centred and extremely unprofessional in her job, however because she did redeem herself I didn't dislike her as much towards the end. I just can't give a great review to a book where I didn't particularly like the main character.
Ech, we all know this story... The lonely woman reads in the magazine the truth that every woman finds her one and only prince charming while dating no more than seven men. Then, like a light bulb in the comics, she realized that one of her exes must be the love of her life. So what's gonna do? Decide to meet them all to see if the spark ist real and maybe one of them is still waiting for her to come back and have happily ever after.
We all know how the stories like these ends... So, predictable AF. Boring. All the exes? Nothing spectacular. I felt I have already seen it somewhere, nothing oryginal, fancy, engaging...
Soooo I was bored to death. Not recommeding at all.
A brilliantly chaotic and fun rom-com that’s packed full of laughs.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Have you ever dreamed of finding the one? Well Ester has, and after reading a dating article about the seven types of men that women date before finding the one, Ester realised that she may have missed hers.
So with the help of her two best friends Bibi and Louise, Ester begins her mission to track down her First Love, Work Mistake, The Overlap, The Friends with Benefits, The Missed Chance, The Bastard and The Serious One.
I absolutely loved this book, Lucy Vine does a brilliant job of weaving together the characters to give them not only their own great stories but some ‘interesting’ overlaps (no spoilers here!).
Seven Exes is available to buy on the 20th June and I would really recommend this one to anyone who is a romance fan!
Thank you Netgalley, Harper Perennial and Lucy Vine for this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Lucy Vine's Seven Exes was a fun, quick read following Esther as she rakes through her dating history to see if she's missed the opportunity to find her soulmate. I enjoyed it overall, but I did have complaints. Esther was so annoying – it seemed not to occur to her that her exes might have moved on with their lives and she was sooo desperate to fall in love that it was quite grating. A lot of the storylines and characters lacked substance – for example, there was a friendship break-up storyline that was dealt with and resolved in like one chapter – and I didn't like the way the story completely withheld details in order to make the ending a bit of a twist. (Can't say any more without spoilers!)
I've started this 3 times since I first got it but have ended up DNFing it at about 20% because I just really haven't got on with it. I don't know if it was the format of the arc or just the wrong timing for me as I was really excited to read it initially. Hopefully once it's published I'll get back round to reading it!
I love the way Lucy Vine writes, she manages to create magic amonst the pages. she manages to craft her characters so they feel like people you have known for years. We follow Ester on quite the journey, its fast paced and really holds your attention. it made me laught out loud and kept me wanting more.
Esther is nearly 30, single and living with best friends Bibi and Louise. When she discovers an old magazine article that says everyone has 7 exes, but one of those is actually the real thing, she decides to contact her 7 to find the one that got away. Will she find the love of her life?
I struggled at times with this book. I found the main character quite whiny and self obsessed, never quite seeing what everyone else around her could because she was too focused on herself. However, I loved Louise and her relationship with Sven (particularly at the end, it made me laugh out loud!), and neighbour Sofia was fantastic. A quick, light read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a free copy to review. My opinions are my own.
I was intrigued at first by the story but unfortunately I did not enjoy this book. Esther was very irritating and she and her friends felt very one dimensional. The 7 exes were all very boring characters.
What if the one that got away was the one?
Esther reads an article which makes the claim: we date 7 types of guy before finding the one.
Well, Esther already has 7 ex's, but shes still single, so obviously, she must have missed him! There starts the mission to track them down.
I really loved the premise for this plot, plus having the flashback into Esther's past and seeing the beginnings of her relationships with the guys, and with her friends added a nice layer.
I also loved that it's set in the UK!
However... now, don't get me wrong; I love a flawed character much more than some perfect miss princess, but there is a line where 'flawed' crosses over into plain annoying, and unfortunately, Esther did this quite a lot. I felt sorry for her friends. There was also too much bad language for my taste. If you're going to describe something as effing bad on every page, then it loses the impact for when something really effing bad does actually happen.
Despite this—providing you can gloss over the annoyances and remember that it is only a romcom!—I did fly through the book and have a really good laugh! So would I recommend it? Yeah, I would. Because what saves this book is the writing, the humor, and the friendships.
3.5 stars.

Esther has had some good relationships. And some bad ones. But a magazine article tells her she has dated 7 types of men - and one of them was THE ONE. So she sets out to go back through them to work out which!
Esther and her friends are brilliant. Slightly cringey but with some genuinely laugh out loud moments, this book is a romance to remember!
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
A fun lighthearted romcom kinda book! Very enjoyable read with a couple of nice twists and a lovely paced story.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC!
This is the first of Lucy Vine's books I've read and I enjoyed it. It was fast paced and kept me hooked until the end!
This is a Netflix rom-com in book form - easy to enjoy, some nice one-liners and a bit of snogging. Although the premise is the very similar to the movie What's Your Number?, the book felt fresh and it was fun to hang out with Esther, Bibi, Loulou and Alex as they track down exes from the (fairly recent) past, throw up in cars and clean up their (hot) messes.
This is the 1st book that I have read by the author and it won't be the last
I loved this book and loved the story and all the characters and this book made me laugh with all the different types of the seven exs
Many thanks to publisher and netgalley for the arc of this book in exchange for this review
Another funny, heartfelt book from this author that made me laugh out loud at several points. The book about Esther trying to find which of her seven exes is the one but ultimately is a tribute to female friendship over the years and the support that this friendship can help you with. Well written and whole-hearted, it's a thumbs up from me.
Seven Exes is a brilliantly funny and heartwarming read. I loved reading about Esther’s journey to find true love, and experiencing those bumps along the road with her. She was just such a relatable and fantastic character. I mean every god damn character is brilliant, and I really loved the female friendships in here too. Such a good read, with super LGBTQ+ rep.
TW: mentions/implied sexual assault, brief description of sexual assault.
What a fun book! I needed something a bit light hearted after some heavy reads and this really filled a need. It has quite a classic rom-com formula with a few twists. It's very funnily written. I particularly liked the flashback to school. It really took me back made me cringe so hard.
Its quite high energy and fast paced.
Thr main character isn't the most likeable and is sometimes verging on woe is me. She also makes some really terrible choices. But she acknowledges her flaws and almost embraces them. It also adds to the comedy of the story.
A really funny, enjoyable read.
