Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This thriller was a little repetitive with very unlikeable characters. The characters were so unlikeable that it made it hard to connect with them at points. But overall it was a decent read.
This book is a show stopper - one I would give to my friends. I would buy multiple copies of this book for people! After reading plenty of thrillers it takes a lot these days for me to not work out the ending but this one totally got me. Overall really clever, well written and one I will be recommending. I am now going to purchase the rest of the authors books that I haven’t read yet. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this early copy.
Amazing thriller, I couldn't put it down!
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advanced copy of the book.
My first book by this author. It started out with great potential, then slowed WAY down for a bit. Part of the problem may have been that I was reading a little at a time, and not sitting down to read it all at once. I found that I would skim through a lot just to get through it.
Yet 70% of the way through this book, it finally climaxed into something that caught my attention and the rest kept me hooked until the very end.
Toxic characters all turned on each other for an ending that that blew me away.

Well written, addictive and unpredictable. This is a book I have really enjoyed and devoured. i definitely want to read more from this author. Full Review to follow.
Very toxic peoole, talk about a book with unlikeable characters throughout…..a good shock ending and a good build up to it,easy to read and easy to dislike the people in it,would definitely read more from this author
This was an enjoyable book by an author new to me. I was hooked throughout, and really liked the writer’s style.
Well worth a read.
I found the first few pages overly descriptive and, at some points, a little cringe; this immediately made me worry that the rest of the story would be like this and I would be unable to enjoy the story and forget about the writing style. I feel with a mystery thriller of this style, opening with a little more suspense and intrigue would go a long way. I think a lot of people may exit early due to this.
I happily ploughed through to around 70% and started to get into the groove, although identifying with the main character was somewhat tricky. I found it hard to sympathise with her and want her to succeed; she seemed to only care for herself.
As soon as her secret years from 24 years ago was revealed, I felt even less towards her and simply sad for Shane.
It's doubtful I will finish the story as I don't really care what happens to her.
Narcissists all! Some very toxic characters get caught up in a mess when a burglar is killed at the scene…
I received a free advanced copy of Toxic People by Net Galley. It was my first book by S.D. Monaghan. It ended up being not my cup of tea. The book begins with married couple Jenny and Shane receiving threatening notes that their lived would be destroyed by that evening. A lot of time is spent on the dysfunctional relationships between the members of Jenny’s family. I thought all of the characters were very unlikeable. Usually that doesn’t bother me in a book but it did in this case. I was actually invested in the mystery of why Jenny and Shane were receiving threatening notes and texts. However, I found the conclusion to be disappointing and a bit implausible.
Truly toxic people indeed. Most of the characters had no redeeming features. An interesting storyline. Thanks for the opportunity to read
This is was a very fast read. Great psychological thriller. Very well written. Definitely a page turner.
If you're looking for a good psychological thriller with a toxic family theme, you've come to the right place. In "Toxic People" we are dealing with a toxic family from which the youngest daughter wants to escape. There are two main characters in this story. The first is Shane. He is forty-four years old. He is married and unfortunately childless. He would love to have children, but his wife has a different opinion on this subject. Shane is a very smart man. He writes books. By getting to know this hero, you will get to know his earlier life. What awaits him, will not be pleasant. The other character is Jenny. She is currently married to the first hero. She does not want to have children. Why? By learning her whole story, you will know the answer to this question. She has a very toxic mother, Vera and a sister, Joan, who is just like her mother. Vera is a narcissist. Everything she does, she does for herself. That's why Jenny wanted to run away from her family. Someone in this book is threatening her. This scares her and her husband, why? Who cares about revealing the truth? Who hates Jenny so much? The truth shocked me deeply. I didn't expect this turn of events. The ending was shocking. Interesting plot. The action was mediocre in places, but I wanted to get to the end of the story at all costs because I wanted to know the truth. I didn't like Vera. I don't understand how she could act like this. If you want to find out what the narcissistic Vera looks like and how her relationship with the environment is going, be sure to read this story.
Thank you NetGalley for the copy in return for an honest review.
I had trouble getting into this one, it was slow to start and stayed slow for a good while. I did however find the ending to be a shock and learning Jennys backstory was somewhat shocking as well. I can honestly say there weren't any characters you truly fall in love with, I mostly disliked all of them...which from the name of the book might be expected.
This book starts off very slow and continues on slowly, I found it hard and there was various moments when I felt like I wanted to give up.
Originally the title was what enticed me to this book because I thought there would be lots of drama and tension but there wasn’t any and the book didn’t make sense.
The ending was a little mediocre and I was partly glad that I had finished it so I could move on.
I think there could of been lots of potential for this book which was missed. It wouldn’t stop me reading another S.D Monaghan book though.
Thank you to Netgalley for this digital ARC. The book has an interesting topic and is a slow burn but ultimately it loses momentum with all the minor details and leaving many strands of the story languishing.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Oooo this book was good. So many petty bitter people. It would have been nice if Shane and Jenny werent so perfect but the rest of the characters make up for them.
More from S.D. Monaghan please!
Thank you to Lume books for this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
I had mixed feelings about this book. I really hated a few characters, they were true to the name of the book, toxic. I found it very tense and enjoyed the plot twist.
I found it quite easy to read through, but did fall short a bit for me personally.
I gave this book 3 ⭐️
Toxic People
My thanks to #NetGalley and #LumeBooks for the advance copy ebook of #ToxicPeople by S.D. Monaghan. A gripping domestic thriller that was hard to put down, #ToxicPeople is the kind of book that grabs you from the beginning and dares you to put it down. It is well written with a few good twists to keep the reader guessing, but the actual toxicity of the characters is wearing. It was very hard to like anybody in the book, but maybe that was the point.
I really enjoyed this story and loved how it played out. A slow starter but it hooks you in. Highly recommended xx
