Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
This book focusses on a couple who have been married for 5 years and go away to celebrate their anniversary. Eliza is not sure they've anything to celebrate and I started off feeling very sorry for Graham who didn't seem to realise she was unhappy. As the book progressed I was fascinated by the way their relationship developed as they danced around 'getting to know each other' or not! I couldn't be sure how it would turn out right to the end, and I'm still not sure I like Eliza but that just shows how credible the characters are!
I have been a big fan of Emily and Austin's prior novels but unfortunately this one did not quite work for me. It is a second chance romance between Eliza and Graham who, whilst on their romantic getaway for their five year anniversary, pretend to be two single people meeting for the first time. They are at a fancy hotel, enjoying activities with other singletons and trying to recapture that spark from the beginning of their relationship.
It took me a while to drag myself through this story as it was not particularly exciting. I actually think this pacing issue could have been supported by trimming some of the pages. Perhaps reducing the POV to either Eliza or Graham would remove any sense of repetition and the draggy moments. It was a fine read but not particularly memorable and I would pick up the authors' other offerings before I returned to this. A neutral, middle of the road 3 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher who provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Sadly, this one just felt flat and forced to me. It was a dragging read, and I couldn't get behind the very premise once the book starts. Like, the hero is a successful lawyer...at just 28? And they've been married 5 years and the spark is gone? It just felt so unrealistic - these were young adults who seemed to know nothing of life, so it fell flat. And the hero, who is a man we should be able to get behind, root for, and fall in love with, is such a soft persona with no life, literally? And the whole 'my wife is so much better than me what is she doing with a dork like me I'll just keep quiet so she won't know how much I don't exist' - cute maybe if you see this once in the middle of the book, but this was literally the vibe we started with once in his POV. It just was so...bland, sorry! Wasn't my cup of tea, unfortunately
Another good read
Perfect book to curl up with and to get lost in
Will have you hooked from the first page
Thanks NetGalley
*I unfortunately had to DNF this book at 15%… this had absolutely nothing to do with the book. I was put into the hospital and was unable to finish it.
I was loving the writing style and the start of the story though, so I will be purchasing this book in the future!
This was a really cute book, and I am officially on board and completely hooked on second-chance marriage books.
While I didn't connect with everything in the plot, nor do I think it would be my preferred way of working with issues, it was interesting to "watch." And it worked for them!
This book also raised a lot of good questions and elements to think about in relationship to marriages and continuing to make one work.
I related to Graham in his belief of being boring and unworthy. In his almost crippling self-doubt in himself. I related to Eliza in her need to avoid conflict and hide from big feelings, sweeping them under the rug and hiding from them.
David was also a great side character, and I hope he finds the love he's looking for.
I really liked and appreciated the theme of this book - that relationships grow and change over time, but they are worth fighting for.
This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
Eliza and Graham are celebrating their 5 year wedding anniversary..... by staying in different rooms. When they meet at the resort's bar, someone introduces Eliza to Graham and they roll with it. They realize that they have chemistry and witty banter. They decide to be strangers the rest of the trip.
I've never read a book like this and it was refreshing to see a new romance trope that I hadn't read before as most things I come across I've read about before. This exciting, passionate and entertaining story had me hooked.
I absolutely love books about marriage reconciliation because I love watching couples who already know each other so well, fall back in love with each other and the synopsis of 'Do I Know You' was something I had never heard of before.
I loved the plot of this book, I loved how Eliza and Graham pretended that they did not know each other in order to spice up their marriage and be able to fall back in love with each other.
There was so much depth to this book and the characters. I really enjoyed seeing both Eliza and Graham's character development throughout and how they found new ways to challenge each other and make their relationship stronger.
I loved this book and can't wait to read more by these two authors.
As someone who is 14+ years into a realstionship I could reate to quite a bit of this book, sadly! I thought the premise was clever and I found lots of it funny. It is more of a beach read than something that is going to having you thinking and that is just fine.
Although marriage in trouble is not always my favourite trope, this was well written and engaging enough to keep me going. The characters were super sweet and overall it was a lighthearted and fun read.
Thank you to the publisher for kindly providing me with an ARC via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I binge read this second chance trope romance in a couple of days on my commute to work. I simply couldn't put it down.
It follows a married couple who have lost that spark after 5 years, but they are sent on an all paid for trip to celebrate their wedding anniversary by the in laws forcing them to address their relationship. When they arrive charismatic Eliza suggests that they sleep in separate rooms much to the shock of her husband graham and that they just pretend to not be married and create these personas. They start "dating" again competing against each other, and I loved loved loved the characters that they made and the fact that they were just exaggerated versions of themselves.
Throughout the book they have this whole will they wont they flirtation, alongside a reflection of their deeper connection leading you to question whether they will get back together or not.
There are also cute side stories, such as a new bromance blossoming with David who is a hopeless romantic, and Elizas relationship with her sister as they arent as close as they used to be.
Overall i really enjoyed this read, and would deffo recommend!!
Reading this book first reminded me of why I love reading so much: understanding humans in their relations whether it is love-related, friendship-related or family-related. In this book, I got to understand why and how some marriages fall apart, how the two slowly drift from each other and how to overcome this situation. Do I know you proved how dating and continuously learning about your significant other is important.
As much as I loved this part of the book, I only gave it two stars and thought about dnfing halfway through it because it felt flat to me and like the plot wasn’t going anywhere. And there are multiple reasons for that:
- The fact that they were so little characters made me a little bored
- I was expecting banter and tension and definitely didn’t feel any of that
- I couldn’t stop comparing Do I know you ? to you deserve each other by Sarah Hole which was the first marriage in trouble book I’ve ever read back in December. In do I know you, the characters deeply love each other from the very beginning whereas in you deserve each other, it sometimes felt like nemesis which I enjoyed a lot more. Indeed, we know the characters deeply love each other and will obviously stay together so that made the book predictable.
In the end, I am glad I didn’t dnf it because I started feeling the feels in the 60%/ 70%. Also I completely did not expect Graham to be this insecure and to learn it so soon in the book but it was a happy surprise !
Anyways I am so grateful I got to read this book and even if it wasn’t my favorite, I still recommend it if you like slow-paced, well developed characters and marriage in trouble !
A big thanks to net galley for sending me this book !
Eliza and Graham have reached a point in their marriage where they are struggling. Set off on a five year anniversary trip by the in-laws, will it give them the jolt they need to save their relationship. I liked how it was told from both points of view and look forward to more books from these authors.
Thanks to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for the review copy!
“Do I Know You?” by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka is a fun and romantic cute story.
Eliza and Graham have been married for four years. Now, they are about to have their first date. However, none of them are excited about their getaway. An entire week at a luxury retreat. They do not want to be there. However, things might change.
This is a combination of a fun and romantic story. Lots of humor and lots of excitement.
“Do I Know You?” is an easy read. You can read it, if you are excited about vacation.
Eliza and Graham are great characters. They have a hard time communicating. Also, they are fighting to keep their marriage up.
“Do I Know You?” by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka is a cute easy read.
This takes the concepts of fake dating and second chance love and combines them in a fun and summery package. I loved the Roughest Draft and this one was great too.
This book was amazing read I connected with the characters straight away. Felt what they were feeling. A cosy warm fussy feeling. They were both full of mixed emotion and feeling for each other.. The atmosphere and the humour of this book was amazing read. Enjoyed every paged.
This is the second book I’ve read by these authors and I really really enjoy how they write together. The characters are likeable and relatable and I thought this story was a really sweet twist on the second chance romance genre. A nice easy read that would be ideal to take on holiday. I’m looking forward to reading even more books from these two in the future.
Twist On A Premise…
A failing marriage, a five year anniversary, an unwanted gift. Eliza and Graham really do not relish the luxury, week long retreat - for those in love and for those looking - they have been gifted for their anniversary. However, go they do and when they’re mistaken for two singles, and strangers to each other, the game begins. Will this be the catalyst that saves their marriage? Well drawn characters populate this twist on a premise romcom with a sparky and pacy narrative. Entertaining and engaging.
When I saw this in book twitter, I couldn’t help but try to snag a copy. So when I saw it in Netgalley, I immediately requested it and got so excited to be approved. It truly didn’t disappoint and my heart feels mush for Eliza and Graham.
We get to journey with them on this week-long staycation to celebrate their 5th wedding anniversary but things are a hot and uncomfortable mess between them. In this marriage in trouble story, it is almost like a second chance romance, except that it isn’t really since they still truly, deep down, love each other and they have things to work out between them. When another guest mistakes them to be single and introduces them to each other, they go along with it in this game of pretend and see if doing so can help them reconnect.
It’s the first time a book with a miscommunication trope made me say “omygod just communicate already” when I usually don’t mind that (since it really happens in life and I love aspects of realism in books) but I’m saying that in a good way because I can see and feel both their love and struggles.
I understand that it had to go the way it did, which felt very long, because of the issues they need to face and acknowledge in their own selves and in their relationship. With my personal preferences, I felt like it could’ve been shorter since I was having a hard time getting through some of the narrative. I was in a haze reading those and I would get off guard by some lines that I didn’t catch. Either the writing didn’t work out for me or this was an effect of the January blues that I was feeling while reading. On a positive note, the dialogue writing was easy and fun to read and I was able to connect to the characters more through that.
With all that being said, I highly recommend this story and I hope you’ll get to root for Eliza and Graham’s love the way I did!
