I don't read many techno thrillers. But this had me gripped throughout.
Following an advanced surveillance technology company as they try find 10 participants. We mainly follow just one of the participants. Who should be the easiest to find but turns out her story is more than it seems.
There's twists in this I didnt see coming but I sort of guessed one of the reasons why.
This story also makes you think about our reality and how dependant we are on technology but also how we are under constant surveillance that is always evolving without us fully understanding or knowing.
This was an interesting read and a great thriller. I can really see this being a movie.
I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
I really enjoyed the first half of this book, it kept me up at night reading and I was so invested.. then it flips completely and towards the end I found it quite the chore to get through. It gets very detailed and tech-y and different.
Still, overall I enjoyed.
Going Zero participants have just two hours to disappear. This Hunted-like thriller focuses on librarian Kaitlyn who is trying to evade capture from Cy Baxter’s Fusion team. However as the story unfolds we learn much more about both parties and that there’s more than just the prize fund at stake.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC
Wow just wow! Absolutely loved this book. Amazing start, really piqued my interest, then had a bit of a dip as got a little tedious I felt, whilst background on concept of Going Zero and Worldshare was explained, then story really got going and didn’t stop! So many twists and interesting questions posed about the world we live in now, perceptive with many different characters and angles building up. Exciting and thought provoking. Will there be a next instalment or will it leave me for ever wondering what happens to Sam…?
From the very beginning I loved this book. It reminded me of other books that I've read and enjoyed which explore a near future world where our lives are all effectively surveilled all day, every day by big tech (think here The Circle and The Every). To add to the mix this book was an excellent thriller in its own right - ten individuals against the formidable Fusion - a tech giant owned by power-hungry Cy Baxter, with the power to know your every thought before you have even thought it. Each of these ten individuals has 31 days to keep out of sight of Fusion - if they remain uncaptured during that time, they're eligible for $3million... and it seems that one of those 10, an unassuming librarian, Kaitlin Day, is going to do just that. I am hugely grateful for NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to review an ARC of this book, a book which I'll be recommending that my data protection students read, to encourage them to think about today's tech driven society and the challenges that ordinary individuals now (and in the future will) face in keeping private information private
I loved this story so well written. It was a bit slow at the start but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t see the twist coming at the end. Well thought out and a must read
What a thought provoking book. Cy's company has created many forms of software to track people going about their every day lives. To test the systems efficiency and win a big VIA contract they decide a test of twenty participants who have to evade capture. If they succeed they become rich. If they are all captured then Cy will!! One by one the zeros, as they are known, are captured. All except one. A librarian they think. It turns out that it is the librarians friend Sam. The reader becomes aware of her tenacity and drive and the reasons behind her desire to win. Great fast paced book
3.5 stars rounded up.
This book reminded me very much of the TV show Hunted. It was a tad slow in parts but overall I enjoyed it
You have two hours to completely vanish if you can stay off the radar and not get caught by the capture team then 3 million dollars is yours. A government Beta test for new spyware begins and all participants start the chase; many are caught almost immediately but others are more difficult to find. As the contest goes on for longer fractures within the Beta test team begin to appear and who are the participants who remain seemingly undetectable. Are they really who they say they are?
This was a high octane thriller that I couldn't put down. As the story unfolded and more secrets were revealed I raced to finish the novel to find out what was going to happen. A must read for anyone who loves fast paced and twisty thriller novels.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars This is a great premise for a book and you can see the author’s background very clearly as it is very filmic and could easily transfer across to tv/film.
The concept is that a random sample of 10 volunteers are invited by a combination of the CIA and one of the world’s top tech companies, to go off-grid for 30 days. They have to hide as best they can and if they aren’t found within that time they can win a multimillion dollar prize.
My favourite parts of the book were actually the parts where some of the volunteers were caught, as they were brief introductions with lots of fun. For the most part however, the emphasis is on just one of the volunteers and on Cy, the owner of the tech company. I do love a good plot but I also like to have characters I care about and for me I was never allowed close enough to the female protagonist (for obvious reasons) to care for her too much.
It’s fun, high octane and some people will definitely love it but I just got a little bit bored in the middle and didn’t feel much satisfied at the end.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Pan MacMillan, for an arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I sadly had to dnf this book at 19%.
I liked the plot idea but I wasn’t a fan of this writing style.
Full of twists and action packed - I absolutely loved this thriller! Easy five stars for me!
If you’ve ever watched the TV show, Hunted - then this is the premise of the book. Ten people: five members of the public; and five security professionals, are tasked with escaping a private security company with support from the US authorities, including the CIA. But all is not as it seems with Zero number 10 - a librarian who is one of those being hunted.
A detailed and intriguing story unfolds as the hunt for the ten individuals ensues. It was tense, edge of the seat reading - and I absolutely smashed through this in a couple of sittings as I just needed to know what happened. It ended somewhat bittersweet but so, so good - I thoroughly recommend if you love an action thriller with a good plot.
I’m not sure if there is a particular genre of books that this one fits into it was very technical at times but then there was a chase going on too so I suppose a thriller too. Maybe suspense rather than thrills? it’s so hard to say. I missed the usual character development I enjoy so overall for me it failed to be one I could recommend.
I enjoyed this book but, at times it was a little too technical for me which bored me a little and I skimmed through those bits. I enjoyed the chasing around and it read like the tv series Hunted which i like. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
An excellent read.
Fast paced and well written it grabs the reader's attention and doesn't let go.
Utterly believable and hard to put down. Highly recommended
it's a breakneck book. honestly i was surprised at how fast everything was moving until it wasn't anymore, the ending had a pretty significant slowdown. wish mccarten's movies were good genre pieces instead of bad biopics!
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. This was my first book from Anthony McCarten and I have to say I am very impressed. I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole way through! A fantastic thriller that was non stop action and full of twists I did not predict. I will definitely be on the lookout for this author again. I would highly recommend this book to everyone. 5 stars from me.
All I can say is wow. What starts off as people registering an interest in and being selected for a beta testing programme steadily becomes more insidious. At tte heart of the program is Cy Baxter CEO of a private company partnering with FBI and CIA to prove that his software is unbeatable in terms of no-one being able to avoid it's reach. The ten participants have to go off grid and avoid capture for a period of time and the winner will receive a cash prize. In return, Cy being able to prove the dominance of his software will get the ultimate prize of access to all the information at the fingertips of FBI and CIA. Read on ....
I received an ARC of this book via netgalley. It has an interesting narrative where 10 people - 5 randomly selected and 5 professionals go off grid trying to escape the search for them with a reward if not found in 30 days. The search for them is undertaken by a company which has used cybertechnology to an extreme in order to find them. Half way through the experiment there is really only one"Zero" still free and clear. As time passess there is a real twist to the nature of this "Zero" which affects the rest of the narrative.
It is a pacy and interesting read and I was enjoying it simply as this search when the boundaries changed. It took me a little while to fully engage with what was revealed.
Overalla good read which i suspect will be the beginning of a series although there is no indication of that at present
