Spoilers for Sorcery of Thorns ahead!
From the first page I was pulled right back into the magical world of Sorcery of Thorns that I had missed so much. Elisabeth and Nathaniel’s banter was back and on top form. It was interesting to see them a year on from where SoT ended and to watch them face a new challenge together now that their relationship has progressed. As much as I love this couple there was a different character that I was most excited to see again: Silas.
Silas is one of my all time favourite characters and, as much as we discovered about him in SoT, I feel I got to know him even better in Mysteries of Thorn Manor. Through touching scenes between him and Elisabeth to a chapter from his POV little pieces of Silas were revealed throughout the book that only made me love him more. Fear not, Silas is very much still a demon but he is also a complex, living being shaped and changed by his experiences.
The mystery is that the house is throwing a tantrum and not letting anyone in or out. It’s up to Elisabeth and Nathaniel to figure out why the house is angry and how to fix it. This led to some very entertaining scenes filled with chaotic magic that had me laughing away.
I liked that Nathaniel was not magically healed from his previous injuries and that there was mention of a rehabilitation period for him as well as him using a cane consistently throughout the book. I also appreciate that this was not framed as a weakness, only something new for him to adapt to and that he was still snarking and wielding magic as well as ever.
Mysteries of Thorn Manor was a beautiful, magical addition to Sorcery of Thorns, full of humour and heartwarming moments.
Rating: 5/5🌟
Steam Level: 1/5🔥 (it’s YA)
This novella was excellent perfect sequel to the novel sorcery of thorns just wish it was longer as I couldn't put it down. So lost in the world I become
If every book had a novella like this, I would know peace.
A short yet charming story developing a beautiful romance. In Sorcery of Thorns, we see the beginnings of the romance between Elizabeth and Nathaniel, but you know, they’re a bit busy trying to save the world. Having a story which shows their relationship and their dynamics together truly, without a looming presence of an apocalypse, is so lovely.
As someone who adores Silas, and the relationship he has with both Nathaniel and Elizabeth, this story was such a relief. Yet also not. It gives you questions and only a few answers, and it sets up perfectly for a possible sequel. Especially the ending. I truly loved seeing how Silas’s relationships with the past members of the house were addressed and hinted at. Silas truly cares for Nathaniel and Elizabeth and it’s absolutely adorable seeing how they look past his demonic self and see who he truly wants to be.
The ending was gorgeous. The surprise engagement definitely had me laughing because of course, it’s so very them. The entire sequence between Elizabeth and Nathaniel at the ball when she’s walking over to him and says she’s going into the arms of the man who loves her, it’s beautiful. Their relationship, despite being over a quick span of time, does not feel like insta-love and I adore that.
During the prologue, we discover it was Silas who awakened the house and made Nathaniel and Elizabeth endure the three tasks. The line about him already picking out the flowers for the wedding makes me giggle. Then we switch and have the whole situation of the army of the undead coming after him. I think, well I hope, that’s setting up for a spin-off story revolving around Silas.
This was such a beautiful story, developing relationships and going deeper into the world's lore, Nathaniel’s family, Elizabeth’s gifts and of course Silas. It was cosy and warm with no angst and drama unless you count fighting a bush as top-tier drama. I adored it.
👑 THE PLOT
Sorcery of Thorns was a book I picked up on a whim last year, not knowing much about it. As fate would have it, it turned out to be one of my favourite books of all time. It was everything I was looking for in a fantasy book, and I’ve been gushing about it ever since. When I found out there was going to be a novella sequel? I was THRILLED.
This novella is exactly what I wanted from a short story follow-up. It catches us up with the characters and gives us what is essentially an extended epilogue. It’s fairly low-stakes, full of fluff, and packed with a mixture of fun action and wholesome bonding moments. Genuinely, I wish more authors would do small sequels like this. I live for them.
👑 THE CHARACTERS
This story expands on the characters so much and I adore it. It was especially great to get small glimpses into the long history that Silas has. He’s such a fascinating character and I could happily read a full-length novel about him. (I am HINTING)
The absolute best thing, though, was getting a chance to see Elisabeth and Nathaniel’s relationship bloom. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loved their chemistry in Sorcery of Thorns. In this book, we see them explore their feelings more and come to terms with their love for each other. Absence of a world-altering plot made for much more time to get to know them as characters.
👑 REASONS TO LOVE
➸ Literally so much fun. I was giggling to myself throughout a lot of this novella. There are just so many funny moments.
➸ New lore. We get a bigger look into the past of the Thorn family and of the world within this story in general.
➸ Perfect amount of romance. Obviously, the romance between Elisabeth and Nathaniel is at the core of this story, but it’s also about them simply getting to know more about each other as well.
➸ Silas. That's it.
👑 THE FINAL WORD
I’m so grateful that Margaret Rogerson decided to bless us with this adorable story. I love these characters so much and I fully enjoyed getting back to them. Am I satisfied with the way this wraps everything up? Yes. Would I happily take more content set within this world? Absolutely.
This was very fluffy and one cozy read. And I really loved how Rogerson gave us the further insights into our hero and heroine’s life. Their domestic scenes gave me all the buzz; more than anything I could have asked for:

My Review
I love this book so much!!! And rated it 5 stars but it would have got a ten if i could go that high. This book is just as good as the first. Elisabeth is brilliant, tough, brave and Thorn is so funny. They make a brilliant pair and this was such a cosy romance to read with a lot of laughter and action. If you loved the first book you really need to read this book.
I love the magic system in this world, the relationship Elisabeth has with the libraries and grimoires it really intriguing. I won't say anything else otherwise i might spoil a few surprises but i think this will be one of my top reads of the year.
This novella follows on from A sorcery of Thorns, which as yet, I haven't actually read. But after loving this cosy little book, it's now sitting on my kindle waiting to be read.
This is set two months after the ending of SOT and focuses on Nathaniel and Elisabeth's growing relationship. The Manor is refusing to let anyone out and along with Silas and Mercy, they set out to discover the reason why amid the secrets of the manor.
I don't often like a fluffy novella, but this was such a wonderful read! I adore that feeling you get when you finish a book and you feel like the pages have wrapped you in a warm hug! I just loved the characters and their eccentricities, the magic system and lovely little touches in this short book.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for providing an arc in return for an honest review...now pardon me while I rush off to find out how Nathaniel and Elisabeth ended up in Thorn Manor together in the first place!!
thank you @netgalley and @simonkidsuk for an review copy
~ I loved Sorcery of Thorns so when this book was announced I was so excited and this book did not disappoint! The story carries on so naturally after the end of Sorcery of Thorns. It shows Elisabeth’s new life with Nathaniel in Thorn Manor, except they now have to solve the puzzle of why the wards that are supposed to be keeping their house safe have now trapped them inside. I read this book in one sitting it was so amazing and I am really excited for whatever will be published next!!
5 Starts 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
MYSTERIES OF THORN MANOR is effectively an extended epilogue to SORCERY OF THORNS. Elizabeth is now living with Nathanial Thorn, the newly restored demon Silas, and a new house member Mercy. And life is going well - until the wards start acting up, trapping them inside. And so begins an exploration of the house to discover what is wrong and how to fix it.
It's basically a fun, extended tour of the house and all its dangerous and charming magic. Rooms that can disappear at will - or at a sorcerer's desire. Deadly clothes. A ballroom made of mirrors. It's a very fun (very, very short) read, pretty much an indulgent exploration of their lives after the book (and with hints of other stories that could be told about their lives) which has made me want to re-read SORCERY OF THORNS again.
A charming, whimsical story full of heart and adventures - just as enjoyable as 'The Sorcery of Thorns'!
In this story, Elisabeth and Nathaniel find themselves trapped inside the Thorn Manor - they need to find a way to appease the magic with the help of their loyal friends, Silas and Mercy.
'Mysteries of Thorn Manor' was a sweet, enchanting read that built on the world and events that happened in 'The Sorcery..'. We got to learn more about the manor itself, about Nathaniel's family, see more of the magic and customs of Margaret Rogerson's world. What's more, the relationship between Elisabeth and Silas was explored in more depth, especially in the context of his immortality. And of course, we got to see more of Nathaniel and Elisabeth - their relationship growing and being tested.
I had a great time with this story and would read anything based in this world. The only word of warning - it could be useful to refresh 'The Sorcery of Thorns' before progressing to this novella, as it references and builds on what happened in the first book, but without actually repeating or reminding any events or details.
I read Sorcery of Thorns back in 2021, and it blew me away entirely. It’s been one of those books that has stuck with me vividly, and I was absolutely delighted when Margaret Rogerson announced that 2023 would see us returning to Thorn Manor.
Although this is a novella, so much world building is still achieved, building upwards from everything that Sorcery of Thorns established. It was an utter delight to return to some of my favourite characters, and, what’s more, explore this magical location just that bit more.
With Elisabeth and Nathaniel reunited with Silas, there is magic aplenty to go around. Silas remains to be one of my favourite non-human characters I have ever read about, and if anything this book just made me love him more. The relationship between Silas and Elisabeth especially was so precious in this novella, and I would have happily read a book double the length just solely for more of them together.
But of course, Elisabeth and Nathaniel are the utter center of the story, and they are as hilarious and wonderful as I remembered, if not more so. It was like being reunited with old friends, and the kind of friends you love so dearly. Elisabeth’s dedication and understanding of the magic books she works with makes this a fantastical book about books, and gives her layers of character that you can’t help but love. Nathaniel just makes me cackle with almost everything he does and says, and I love the way his brain waves strike him at the most ridiiculous of moments (mainly because I can completely relate to that).
Overall, this ended up being one of my favourite reads of 2022, and I know already I’ll reread it time and again when I need a pick-me-up book. Rogerson is a genius.
Thankyou to Simon and Schuster UK Children's and NetGalley for a e-arc in exchange for a un bias review.
I adored everything about this book! I read Sorcery of Thorns earlier this year and is easily top 5 in all my reads this year (out of almost 150). It gives me all the warm feels and i found myself just grinning all the way through! I didnt want it to end. This book has my heart and will become a comfort repeat read whenever i need a pick me up.
This is the perfect sequel to sorcery of thorns and gave us so much more than I had even anticipated! This story takes place after the events in the first book and dare I say it’s the perfect ending to the story and really helped round out Nathanial and Elizabeth’s story?
Fans are going to love it!
Thank you to Simon and Schuster for approving me for an early copy of this novella.

In this delightful sequel novella to “Sorcery of Thorns” our beloved main characters, Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas must unravel the magical trap keeping them inside Thorn Manor in time for their Midwinter Ball!

Starting this off on a very unprofessional note, but if anyone wants to know how my personality and sense of humour and sarcasm would look like in book character form…just let me introduce you to Elisabeth Scrivener and Nathaniel Thorn.
This novella was the perfect addition to the original book. It didn’t let go of the wonderfully whimsical, mysterious, historical setting and atmosphere as well as the humours and emotional character relationships, that I loved so much about Sorcery of Thorns. Sorcery was one of the first books, that I´ve picked up last year when I was rediscovering my love for reading and since then Margaret Rogerson´s books have quickly become some of my favourites. They just have this cosy and warm feeling, but at the same time have the perfect amount of suspense and action.
And to end this on yet again, an unprofessional note: Elisabeth, I feel you….the daily struggle of getting attacked by historical clothing is just insufferable.
The ending we all wanted. A short but sweet wrap up which unlike the original has a satisfying conclusion. It was great to return to the Thorn Universe but I still would love to know more about Silas.
This is a lovely little whirlwind back into the world of Sorcery of Thorns. It was great coming back to the characters and seeing a little snapshot of what came after the end of the original book. I do hope there's more..
This is the kind of sequel novella that you wish every one of your favourite books could have - low stakes, cosy, funny and just a great time reuniting with characters that you love. If you loved Sorcery of Thorns, you're going to love this sequel novella! It has a fantastic sense of humour, it's so adorable and sweet, and has the perfect amount of plot for a novella. Normally with a novella/short story I find that not enough plot happens for me to enjoy what's going on, but this worked perfectly and was so easy to read! Very fluffy, very fun, and now I want to reread Sorcery of Thorns immediately!
The perfect novella/sequel!
Filled with all the fluff and romance that we needed more of in SoT 🥰
We're back with our favourite characters as they try to settle into life 2 months after the events from the first book
It's honestly the perfect ending we needed for them, and 100% worth the read 🤍
Thankyou NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the ARC
I read Sorcery Of Thorns when it first came out, and am afraid I don't remember very much about it. However, this sequel novella has encouraged me to go back and read it again, being a short and charming story with engaging characters. Really enjoyed it!
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
Mysteries of Thorn Manor was everything I could ever have wanted and more in a Sorcery of Thorns sequel.
Thorn Manor’s wards are malfunctioning just days before they’re due to host the annual Midwinter Ball, and Nathaniel and Elisabeth need to work out what’s happening and how to undo it. Trapped inside the Manor with Nathaniel’s demon Silas and their new maid Mercy, they have to reveal Thorn Manor’s secrets before it’s too late!
Mysteries of Thorn Manor very much felt like an ‘extended epilogue’. It was cosy and adorable with a cute little mystery to solve.
I loved being back with Nathaniel, Elisabeth, and Silas, and if you love the world and characters as much as I do, you’re sure to love this new novella!
