Mysteries of Thorn Manor is a charming, adorable novella set 2 months after Sorcery of Thorns and primary follows 2 storylines of Silas adjusting to his return and Elisabeth and Nathaniel learning what they mean to each other. All of this is explored when the Manor House’s wards lock them all in with a cyclone outside. To appease the wards, Nathaniel must face his disbelief of fairytales and happy endings to show Elisabeth a pact of love. Meanwhile Elisabeth attempts to find the humanity in Silas and understand who he really is.
This is a short read but it’s just a really delightful story to curl up with, the writing style flows and is sweet and these characters have a special place in my heart. While I enjoyed the moments between Elisabeth and Nathaniel and seeing the vulnerability in his character and the young, sometimes scared man behind the humour, charm and bravado, the true heart of this book is in the interactions between Silas and Elisabeth, in fact that’s where the true intimacy really shines, a ballroom scene instantly comes to mind. Together they’re so tender, Elisabeth wanting Silas to know how loved he is and Silas showing, in his own way, how much he loves her in return. There is still so much potential with all these characters, in fact more than how SOT ended, but really it’s such a gift to fans of the story and the characters to be given this insight into them and how they’re doing :’) I love these people and I loved the chance to go back to them
Thank you NetGalley SO MUCH for the chance to read this in exchange for an honest review
Oh, I absolutely loved this.
'Sorcery of Thorns' is one of my all-time favourite fantasies, and so when I saw this announced, I knew it was something I had to read, even though it's been a little while now since I read the original book.
But this did not disappoint.
It was such a joy to return to the characters and world I love so much, where Nathaniel continued to make me laugh out loud, in a way no other literary love interest has ever been able to do. Elisabeth was just as strong-willed and loveable as I remember her, and it was so nice to have Silas back, and be able to have a little more context to his character.
I loved the low-stakes setting, I think it's something more authors should experiment with, rather than shying away from the idea of something so lovely. I really just enjoyed spending more time with these characters I hadn't realised I'd missed so much, and I think it's a real testament to Rogerson's writing that I was able to get right back into the world as if I'd never been away.
I adored 'Sorcery of Thorns', and this was such a lovely novella to pay tribute to it.
(Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for this eARC!)
A lovely novella following on from Sorcery of Thorns.
Due to the sudden activation of some overzealous magical wards, Elisabeth & Nathaniel are trapped in Thorn Manor. Can they solve the problem before the Midwinter Ball?
I loved exploring the house, discovering hidden rooms and vicious clothing - plus a few grimoires in need some love.
Sweet and charming - this is a fantastic, fluffy, cosy read. In fact, I'm off to read it again to sooth my covid-addled brain
