I really enjoyed this story, particularly with the knowledge that it was inspired by true life events. I liked the character of Ellen and thought she came across very well. I wouldn't call it a romance, however - there /is/ a romance but it's very much secondary to the main plot of the novel, which is the abduction of the heroine and her subsequent attempt to escape her marriage.
Minor negatives: the cover is lovely, but doesn't have much to do with the plot of the book, and neither does the title really fit with what actually happens. I'm also not convinced that anyone would run off to Scotland in a barouche since it's an open carriage meant for parading around and showing off in, not particularly practical for abducting someone and travelling a long distance in it.
A really enjoyable historical regency romance. A must read for anyone who enjoys this genre. It is loosely based on real events with the author adding notes at the end.
The first in the new Stately Scandals series, The Runaway Bride, tells the story of Ellen Turner, in a time when women didn't have rights and could be ruined easily. I do love historcial dramas and books, ie. Bridgerton then this book will be right up your alley,
Ellen is a woman who, shocks everyone when she enlopes only to find herself being judged by the public and a legal case where she finds herself face to face with Thomas Legh. This is a story of a woman who is prepared to chase the man of her dreams, no matter what anyone says or thinks about her.
This is the first time that stories like Ellen, which feature in the Stately Scandals are being told. Trust me you don't want to miss out on the story of Ellen.
A delightful and charming period drama based on true events. It always shocks me how a woman's reputation can be tarnished by doing things we take for granted. Great cast of characters and a remarkable storyline. This was the perfect escape read.
