I have read all of Catherine Alliott's books and really enjoyed this one. Looking forward to the next one.

Lovely story albeit there are alot of characters names to get used to at the start and figuring out how they all fit in.

The Pink House is a book about love but starts with Emma having a love affair with her husband’s parents country house. It always held a special place in her heart, and when her in-laws divorced, Emma and her husband Hugh made the move from London to the country to start a new life. But country living is not all roses around the door and although it sounds idyllic, cracks appear but we’re talking relationships and not the plasterwork!

Really cute story.

At first glance, "The Pink House" by Catherine Alliott might seem daunting due to the plethora of characters introduced within the extended family. However, Alliott skillfully interlaces their stories, creating a rich tapestry that gradually draws the reader in. The narrative unfolds at a measured pace, making it a gentle and enjoyable read. The book delves deeply into various facets of family life, exploring themes of love and friendship with sensitivity and warmth. While it may start slowly, patience is rewarded as the intricate connections between characters come to light, offering a heartfelt and satisfying journey.

A slow burner but got going on the end. When Hugh and Emma are given the family house along with Hughs sister it also comes with the family's problems. An enjoyable read.

This is the first book I've read by Catherine Alliott, and it was a bit reminiscent of Joanna Trollope. There's a definite whiff of the "Aga saga", which I don't mean in a bad way - I really enjoyed it.

Emma Petridis and husband Hugh move into the "pink house" following the breakdown of the marriage of her parents-in-law, its former occupants. (Mother-in-law Clem is a real piece of work.) Hugh's sister (and Emma's friend), Sally, is also on the scene, moving into a cottage on the grounds.

Hugh has never been a man much given to communication or expression of emotion, while Emma is the opposite, but their marriage has lasted, raising two now grown up sons together. When someone from Emma's past reappears, though, it provides a catalyst for change.

The Pink House is an engaging family drama - Emma was a likeable character, even if her country lifestyle isn't that relatable. (Yes, there's an Aga involved. And let's face it, I'm probably never going to start an art gallery, or for that matter host a wedding, in a barn on my family property.) To be fair to Emma, her life wasn't always that way. I liked her friend Jane too, and father in law Yanni.

Thanks for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy!

A really well written book. I haven’t read a book by this author for a long time, so it was nice to go back to an existing good author who won’t let you down!

Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.

I've been a big fan of Catherine Alliott for  years. I love the characters she creates and the dry humour throughout all her novels.

We meet main character Emma shortly after moving into the house previously owned by her parents-in-law. It's her dream to move to the country and she has high expectations for a new life in the beautiful Pink House. However, the move seems to bring out cracks in Emma's life that she never knew existed

Blasts from the past reappear unexpectedly, her relationships are challenged and secrets are revealed. The main event of the book is a family wedding set in Emma's recently renovated art exhibition in the grounds of the Pink House. However, it is not the bride and groom who provide the drama!

This book is a little more serious than usual but the characters come to life on the page and the story leaves you wanting more. Great for lovers of family dramas.

I loved that this book was set around the family home and all the thoughts and memories that it brings to this family saga. I really enjoyed the characters and whilst I found it slow to start with, soon the layers were unpeeled and found it hard to put down. Highly recommend.

I am a huge Catherine Alliott fan, so was really looking forward to reading The Pink House and was not disappointed. This is a character-led story that is set against the backdrop of the aforementioned country house, recently bought by Hugh and Emma following his parents’ divorce. Emma had always loved visiting the house, and at first everything seems hunky-dory, but actually living there is very different and it is not long before the cracks start to appear.
The Pink House gets off to a bit of a slow start as the characters are introduced and family dynamics explored. As the big family wedding approaches, tensions are running high and things are revealed that shock Emma to the core. Emma is a typical Catherine Alliott heroine, and to begin with she seems happy to go with the flow. As her character develops, she really comes into her own, starts to stand up for herself and work out what it is she really wants. There is a love story at the heart of this book, as she reconnects with someone from her past, but it is not the main focus.
There are a lot of characters here, but they are clearly defined – some are lovely, others are downright horrible. The setting is idyllic and there is a lot of talk about art which I enjoyed. We get closure as the epilogue rounds it all off nicely. I am always keen to read a new book by Catherine Alliott, and I enjoyed this one very much. Thanks to Penguin and NetGalley for a digital copy to review.

An absolutely cracking read. I found it very hard to put down. Emotional, romantic and absorbing. You can easily imagine yourself in the setting and being part of the family. In fact I quite miss them now I have finished the book. The story slowly develops peeling away the layers. Highly recommended!

Oh, what a tangled web we weave….
Emma is a woolly sort of character for a start, but by the end she’s quite magnificent! I was cheering her on!
This is a lovely book, not predictable at all, I really enjoyed it.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing this book for review.

This was an intricate family drama that plays out in a lovely country setting. The characters are believable, with many flaws and the story moves along at a good pace.

For a long time I was really not enjoying this book, it felt very drawn out and I so wanted to give up. Thankfully the last quarter of the book makes up for the not so good first three quarters! Finally you get storylines that don't seem drawn out and actually captivate you.

A better title for this book would be ‘Secrets and Lies’. The narrator, Emma, is, we presume in her fifties. When her parents-in-law divorce in their seventies, she and her husband buy the family home, The Pink House, in the country. All the events in the book take place around the wedding of one of their sons. In middle age, Emma has a series of shocks: she has been lied to her whole life; one of her oldest friends actually hates her; her mother-in-law is poison (she knew that); her marriage is in trouble (she didn’t know that) and a romantic figure from her past appears unexpectedly. Sadly, apart from Emma’s children, there is hardly a likeable character in the whole book and I include Emma.

I’ve read books by Catherine Alliott before and quite enjoyed them but I don’t find an exploration of family relationships and a lot of bad behaviour enough to carry a whole book and make it worth reading. And, by the way, ‘Musee de Beaux Arts’ is wrong; it should be ‘des Beaux Arts’. This kind of error is very irritating.

A family saga intricate in its relationships . It is full of lives lost and won over the lifetimes of the mix of different characters within the storyline .
A pleasant read again by this prolific author

A great family drama set among the upper middle classes in the English countryside. Emma and Hugh buy his parent's family home when they split up. Married for almost 30 years, with two grown up sons, Emma and Hugh rub along happily. Emma sets up the barn as an art project and in researching it meets up with "the one that got away", Rory - brother of her tragic student love, Hamish. The connection is still strong and Emma is conflicted. Add to the mix, conniving sister in law Sally, who has moved into the annex of the family home and we have drama a plenty. Lots of nice touches, and the family wedding was a delight. A great read. #netgalley #thepinkhouse
