Thankyou to NetGalley and Amber books for allowing me to read this arc.
A stunning coffee table book. A book for anyone who wants to travel to Japan or is a lover of Japan. I absolutely love books like this, that just suck you and really capture you with the photographs provided. From what I read Melanie Clegg didn’t take them herself but that doesn’t matter to me, she’s put them together to create this book.
This book provides everything from food, culture and daily life to the nature in Japan and the traditional temples, Daytime, nighttime, city, country, land, water, wildlife, vegetation. Along side all the stunning photographs there is informative text, making your way down Japan, beginning in Tokyo and traveling north then south and ending in Okinawa.
You really get your own personal tour of Japan, the Country, that you really feel like your there and can smell and hear everything going on around you.
This is a truly beautiful book that captures so many angles of Japan, from food, culture, architecture, nature, and of course, people. I'm not a photographer by any means, but the imagery seems spectacular to me, and has captured so many facets of a country and culture that people from all over the world love and are fascinated by.
This book would be excellent as a coffee table book or as part of a visual collection, and even for people who aren't already knowledgable about Japan - I'm sure this would inspire many to visit I've thoroughly enjoyed looking through, and it has inspired me to start planning my next trip to Japan!
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Amber Books for this ARC - as ever, my opinions are my own, honest, and freely given.
Thank you to Netgalley, Melanie Clegg, and Amber Books for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!
Great book for anyone who loves Japan. It provides everything from nature to traditional temples, modern buildings, food, culture and daily life. Beautiful pictures are accompanied by informative text sections. A great coffee table book.
It's hard to continue lauding these books for their visual brilliance, but these lovely volumes only deserve such a response. This acted as no souvenir for me, having never been to anywhere near Japan, but the wonderful photographs throughout, of castles, waterfalls, the cities, people and hot springs and so much else, make the country entirely appealing. I think it best if you have some foreknowledge and experience of the place, as the welter of historical periods, activities and changes is a bit much, even when the principal text here is merely the captions to the photos. Still, multiple historical terms is no price to pay for these pages, for they are very attractive pages indeed.
Having never visited Japan I found this a hugely informative book. The photographs reflect the heritage, culture and history of this fascinating country. From amazing structures, stunning cherry blossom and colourful and graceful geisha, the images are enough to make this a destination for my wish list. Thank you to Net Galley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
A gorgeous coffee table book of Japan, covering not just famous architectural sites, temples and natural beauty , but also it’s food and culture
Wonderful photos and interesting tidbits of history and modern info about all the different areas of Japan. Makes me want to visit ASAP!
I love Japan and this book with its photos made my desire to visit Japan grow bigger and bigger. The book is perfect for anyone who loves to travel, see photos from different countries, cultures or anyone who wants to remember the places they once visited.
A picture may be worth a thousand words, but the captions in this book provide the information to really enjoy it. It covers all the regions of Japan, including the outlying islands with urban, rural and natural scenes. The book showcases the diversity of the country and the impact of its heritage. Melanie Clegg feeds tidbits of knowledge through the captions in addition to introductions to each area. The result is somewhat like a good travel documentary with the bonus that you can take your time looking.
Lovely coffee table book full of colour and inspiration. Probably best in hard back version. If you are looking for composition ideas for Japan then this will suit you. Easy to navigate around the regions. Thank you #NetGalley for the e-book to review.
This photo book about Japan is very nice. In it, there are photos of all the famous cities and cultural icons you’d expect, and some of the more out of the way locations that a first traveler might not get a chance to visit. I lived in Japan for 10 years, and I lived to Tokyo, Shizuoka, and Aomori. I have visited every major island, and some of the smaller ones and there are still places in this book I haven’t seen. I was disappointed not to see Shizuoka represented.
My only complaint is that in the ebook, the colors of the photos aren’t very vibrant or sharp, but that could be the medium. Also, it seems like a lot of photos were stock photos and not the author’s own. Some more candid photos would have been a nice addition. It is a nice book for people interested in Japan and it’s culture.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Japan is a place of beauty. It has managed to combine the modern and the ancient world and attract people from all over the world for both of these. The photography makes you feel like you are in Japan experiencing these stunning vistas.
7 seperate chapters on the main areas of Japan: Tokyo, Kanto and Chubu; Tohoku; Hokkaido; Kansai; Chugoku & Shikoku Island; Kyushu; and Outer Islands. Each of these chapters contain stunning images and captions about locations within these areas. Plenty of these locations are easily able to be visited, and each place would be worth the trip.
Personally I loved each chapter, but seeing the scenery of Hokkaido was breath-taking. Each of the photos selected showcased Hokkaido in each of the seasons, showing how stunning it is year round. The Snow Festival in Sapporo to the summer flower fields each have there own appeal.
A great book if you love Japan and photography.
Melanie Clegg has a BA in Japanese Studies from the University of Oxford and spent almost a decade in Japan, so she writes about the country with familiarity. In this 224-page visual explorer guide, she shares interesting facts about Japan’s history, geography, and culture alongside more than 200 attractive photographs.
There are no maps and the text isn’t detailed enough to function as a travel guide, but this is a wonderful way for armchair travelers to learn more about Japan. For the more adventurous, this book may inspire travel plans or flesh out your list of sights to see. I’m not much of an international traveler, but this book did arouse some desire for me to see parts of Japan for myself.
At 8.4 x 11.5 inches, this hardcover is a bit smaller than I’d prefer, but still large enough to function as a nice coffee table book.
Thanks to Amber Books for providing me with an ARC through NetGalley. I volunteered to provide an honest review.
Gorgeous book the photography is breathtaking.A fascinating tour around parts of Japan a book that informs entertains a perfect coffee table book to display proudly,
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
The book is divided by the different regions of Japan. The photographs are a mix of rural and urban, nature and city. All of the photographs are full of color and movement. They feature shrines and abandoned buildings.
This is a perfect book for anyone interested in Japan or photobooks.
Gorgeous photography. The trees, flowers and night-lights are particularly stunning ✨ This would make a wonderful coffee table book for anyone interested in Japan, travel, geography, or who just likes to look at pretty landscape pictures and the like.
Another astonishing collection of photographs from Amber Books, alongside really informative text that looks in to the traditions, different areas, food, sport, seasons, wildlife - you name it, every aspect of Japanese life is explored in this book!
The nature scenes are always my favourite in these books, but the architecture too is equally breathtaking. It really shows how diverse Japan is in each area, especially from the bright lights of the cities to the tranquil peace of the forests and green spaces. It just makes you want to jump on a plane and experience it all for yourself!! But looking through this book is the next best thing! Beautiful!
This is another fab travel book from Amber Books, this time all about Japan, another place I’ve never visited, but would like to.
There are some beautiful photos in this book revealing so many parts of Japan that I didn’t know about. For instance did you know that there are 6,852 islands in its archipelago, but only 430 are inhabited?
I loved the beautiful photograph of the striped flower gardens at Shikisai-no-aka, Bei, Hokkaido. I’d love to see those if I visited Japan, as well as of course the infamous cherry blossom! There were also gorgeous photos of the turquoise seas surrounding the islands not something I would connect with modern Japan.
The living history village of Noboribetsu sounded fascinating as did the sand baths on a beach in Ibusuki, on Nagasaki. The town is geothermally heated by a hot spring running underneath the beach! A fun fact about the food on the island of Okinawa is that it’s heavily influenced by the American air base with Spam incorporated into lots of dishes!
Definitely recommended if your heading to Japan or you’re a keen armchair traveller!
This should be a great coffee table book as the pictures are gorgeous and made me wish I could be there.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
An amazing photography book on Japan with encounters with food, culture and architecture. It's paradise for planning your next adventure.
