This is the first book I have read by Holly. I loved the premise and I am always open to a new detective series.
Eve Bennet is quite the detective. She has chosen to work in a field that will constantly remind her of the horrors she went through as a child. She braves her bullying stepbrother on a regular basis and somehow walks away without killing him. Eve does all of this to help stop others from going through what she went through. I think this makes her extremely brave and strong.
I love Eve’s team. They all have their own reasons for being part of the team. Eve has carefully picked this group to be the best. The team works so well together. They all contribute to the case differently due to their different backgrounds. They all respect each other and know not to judge each other.
I found the case itself equally fascinating and horrifying. I was fascinated by the cult and its many rules but equally horrified by them. How anyone could stand to live like that I do not know. I love to challenge things and I don’t think I could be one of those sweet women. The more Eve and the team uncovered the more I was shocked by the willingness of the church to cover things up.
Holly is an excellent writer. I was so gripped by the story and so engaged. The character and plot are well thought out. The pace was spot on. There wasn’t any point when I thought the story was lagging. Holly also clearly has a good knowledge of police procedures as a retired detective.
An excellent start to what I hope will be a very addictive series. This is the first book I have read by Holly. I loved the premise and I am always open to a new detective series.

If I could sum up my thoughts on this book now,
They consist of one word repeated . . . quite simply. "WOW!"
I was hooked in, right from the beginning, it's true,
Make time to read it yourself, I hope you'll do.
What an incredible chiller
A horrendous crime thriller.
With religious dogma and indoctrination, too,
Influencing believers in what they choose to do.
Detective Eve Bennet was raised in this community
Escaping as a teen hasn't brought her immunity.
It is not helped by what else they find at the scene
Or her stepbrothers' attitudes as they try her to demean.
So many shocking revelations to discover,
Secrets, practices, attitudes and others.
All play key roles as the investigation unfolds
And how four family victims were killed is told.
There's danger, beliefs and memories, too,
All playing a part in what all are going through.
Learning about the author's background now
Makes this story more worrying still, somehow.
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
I throughly enjoyed reading it and this is my honest review.
Thrilling. Suspenseful. A fast paced roller coaster ride of a book. I loved loved this one. Great start to the series. Brilliant book. Very highly recommended
This is a great debut novel and really am looking forward to amy more books that she writes for this series.
Detective Eve Bennett is a detective in a small knit community when she discovers a whole family dead and one child missing.
From the start I was hooked and didn't stop reading until the very end.
The book was engaging and intriguing.
Highly recommended.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'Only Girl Alive' by Holly S. Roberts.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Holly S. Roberts, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 13th January 2023.
This is the first book I have read by this author.
I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Melinda Leigh, Kendra Elliot and Lisa Regan will be absolutely gripped by this explosive and totally unputdownable crime thriller from a USA Today bestselling author.' I am a huge fan of all three of these authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 34 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Utah, USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in third person perspective and the protagonist is Detective Eve Bennet. The benefits of third person perspective are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.
'Only Girl Alive' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Holly discusses/includes sexual assault.
AN ABSOLUTELY INTRIGUING, THOUGHT PROVOKING, UNPUTDOWNABLE HEART RACING AND EXPLOSIVE START TO WHAT PROMISES TO BE AN ADDICTIVE SERIES!!
Wow!!! This book is fantastically written and had me hook, line and sinker from beginning to end. The descriptions were so in depth and vivid that the hair on my arms was standing on the ends and my heart was pounding throughout. The synopsis, title and cover were perfect for the storyline.
I absolutely loved this unique page turning explosive page turner. I have never really given much thought to the Fundamentalist Mormons previously but while reading this book I was researching the Fundamentalist Church Of Jesus Christ in Utah and I was absolutely shocked, disturbed and disgusted at some of the things I came across which included the heartbreaking 'Babyland' which is mentioned in this book. I wanted to sat a MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS to Hannah on her extensive research (plus her experiences) which absolutely shone through the storyline. There's not much worse than when an author doesn't research their topic and it becomes littered with unnecessary mistakes as it can spoil the storyline. However, you not only chose an intriguing topic to write about but you've researched it well and definitely piqued my interest on it. I will most definitely be looking more into the polygamist community and the FLDS as soon as I have completed this review. I was absolutely absorbed throughout this page turner. It is filled with tension, suspense, lies, secrets, polygamy, murder and omg the twist!!! I DID NOT see that coming!!! Another MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS Holly!! It is getting harder and harder to shock me but by God you did that over and over and over!!! What an ending!!! One of the most gripping unputdownable nerve wracking psychological thrillers I have EVER read!!! You lady have one hell of a talent and I cannot wait to get hold of your previous and future books. I cannot remember the last time I was so hooked by a book but you managed that big time!!! The storyline is filled with crime, shocks, suspense, tension, deceit, history, research and murder. There was so much going on and it was very fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. It is also very thought provoking and intriguing!! The storyline is scarily realistic after looking into the subject myself and it is something I am not sure many people realise goes on.
Clear your schedule before you start as I read this in one sitting as I could not put it down!! Practically every chapter ended on a cliff hanger so no way could I put it down!! Absolutely hooked!! I would absolutely love to see this turned into a movie!!!!
I read approximately half of this book on kindle and listened to approximately half on audio book. I must also give a huge congratulations to the narrator Stacia Keogh who not only brought the storyline to life by really portraying the emotions through his voice but by doing absolutely fantastic impressions of males and females so a HUGE congratulations Stacia!! I cannot imagine that this was anywhere near an easy feat!!! I am looking forward to discovering more books read by yourself as you definitely have a perfect "book" voice!! I sometimes struggle to absorb the storyline through an audio book but if you are the same as me I can promise you will not have that problem with this amazing narrator!!
It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but also any characters that may make repeat appearances during the series too.
I was completely invested in both the storyline and the characters. Each of the characters had their own unique personalities and I felt differently about each of them. I really liked Eve and felt so sorry on her throughout the book. She had a heartbreaking childhood and the more I discovered about her history the more my heart went out to her. However, the fact that after everything she went through she held her head up high and refused to allow the community to get away with what was going on the more I liked her. I found that she is such a strong female protagonist and was extremely likeable. I loved her relationship with her team and I am looking forward to meeting her and the rest of the members again in the next book. I thought Clyde was sweet and I am looking forward to seeing if the relationship continues to develop between him and Eve. I thought it was lovely how he looked out for her and that they were also such good friends while working well together. Colin, Ray and Bina were also great team members each with their own personalities and I loved watching the friendship and relationships between each of them grow and develop and learning about their pasts along with Eve and Clyde's. They make a fantastic team and I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of them again in the next book in what promises to be an explosive series!!! All in all a great mix of characters that worked well with this storyline.
Welcome to my favourite author Club Holly!! Bring on the next book in this gripping series!! I cannot wait!!! Here's to the next success 🥂
Overall an absolutely heart racing, nerve wracking, thought provoking, unputdownable addictive start to what promises to be an absolutely fantastic new series!!!
Genres covered in this book include Romance, Noir Fiction, Women's Psychological Fiction, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Police Procedural, Romance Novel, Women's Popular Fiction, Crime, Thriller & Mystery Adventures, Psychological Fiction, Crime Fiction and Psychological Thriller amongst others.

This is the first book in a new detective series and what a fantastic start this book was. Right from the start I was completely absorbed in this story. It’s not just a detective story it’s based around the polygamist community in Utah and reading about the lives of these people really is an eye opener. The main detective Eve and her team come across really well in the book and I can’t wait to see how they develop throughout this series.
Oh my goodness what a great read that was. I couldn’t put it down. It’s clear the author has some knowledge of the subject, which was confirmed in the notes at the end. This was quite a dark and harrowing read but that was countered by the wonderful camaraderie between Detective Eve Bennet and her team. Everyone of them was a gem of a character. Not so much her previous ‘family’ in particular the odious Aaron; what I wouldn’t do to him if I got hold of him! Set in Hilldale, Utah in a very strict fundamentalist polygamist community, one that Eve lived in as a child, this is a police procedural with a difference.
Briefly, the Tanner family are all murdered in their beds one night and youngest child Holly escaped death as she was staying with other family members overnight. The police are worried for Holly’s safety but the family won’t let anyone see her. There is also a further shocking discovery in the attic that might explain why the murders took place. They need to find the killer before they strike again but with the community blocking their every move it won’t be easy.
The descriptions of the community and their way of life is quite harrowing for anyone of a nervous disposition; in particular the treatment of females which basically makes them into drudges for the men, as well as sexual slaves, with young girls often married off to much older men. It just doesn’t bear thinking about. The lifestyles of the community are a large part of the book and almost as important as the search for the killer. This book really makes you think and as for the reveal of the killer, and the motivation, this is shocking in the extreme. For me this was a great read and I finished it in a day. Shocking, harrowing, unbelievable and a whole other raft of adjectives and I’m already looking forward to book 2 in the series. Loved it.
"The killer lightly inhaled and exhaled into the silence, awaiting God's next command… Sinners waited for salvation in the next rooms"
The bodies of four members of the Tanner family are found lifeless in their beds. An entire family, wiped out as they slept. Or so it first appears. There is actually a survivor. One child that is still alive who may hold the key to solving this violent and unthinkable crime. But her uncle won’t allow the police to speak with her and the entire community seems determined to keep the ten-year-old hidden. What are they so scared she might reveal?
As Detective Eve Bennett and her team investigate, they make a shocking discovery in the attic of the Tanner’s home that leads to even darker revelations. Now they must race against the clock to catch the brutal killer before they strike again.
Did I need a new crime series on my already overflowing TBR? Not at all. But despite this, and the fact I’d sworn to cut right back on blog tours in the last few months leading up to my wedding, I was unable to resist reading Only Girl Alive and joining the blog tour. Noelle Holten, I blame you. But I also have to thank you, because this book had me hooked and I’ve found a fantastic new series to follow.
"The evil that permeated this community was the history that she unsuccessfully tried to escape."
Only Girl Alive introduces us to a new star in crime fiction. Detective Eve Bennett works for Utah’s special investigative squad, a unit committed to helping find justice for the victims of the polygamist sect of the Mormon Church. Her motives are personal as Eve was raised in the sect before escaping as a young teenager. Her fundamentalist past still haunts her, the trauma and indoctrination a daily battle she must wage. I really liked the author’s choice to give Eve a fundie background as it not only gives the reader an added insight into the community she is investigating, but also makes for complex dynamics and interesting plot points such as working against her own family when investigating crimes. She is a fascinating character who was a joy to read. I also really enjoyed the characters who made up Eve’s team. I loved their dynamic and how they handled the tricky obstacles they faced from the community as they investigated. The hint of blossoming romance was also fun to read and I’m hoping to see that develop in book two.
There aren’t many fiction books that focus on fundamentalism so setting a new series around a fundie community is something that immediately makes it stand out from the crowd. And as someone who has long been interested in fundamentalism and its consequences, it made me even more invested in this book and its characters. The author skillfully portrays what it is like to live with such an indoctrinated mindset, something that is shown particularly well when we read the opening chapter, which is written from the killer’s point of view. This chapter chilled me to my core as it is clear that they are a deeply disturbed person who is so indoctrinated that they genuinely believe they are carrying out God’s judgement and helping their victims atone for their sins. Seriously creepy but sadly understandable with what they are taught.
“An evil corruption that twisted the hearts and minds of over ten thousand people waited to stop Eve's team from discovering the truth. What secret were they willing to kill for? "
Holly S. Roberts’ biography tells us that she is a retired homicide detective, something that totally makes sense after reading this book. Exquisitely written, evocative and utterly compelling, it also includes lots of little details about the inner workings of investigating a crime that felt authentic. I now know why. As someone who reads a lot of thrillers, it isn’t often I can genuinely say that I did not see a twist coming. But that is what happened with this book. There are a lot of surprising revelations along the way, but the big reveal totally blindsided me. My jaw was on the floor and I suddenly had to question everything I thought I knew. How did I miss it?! Well played, Ms. Roberts. Well played.
Tense, twisty and gripping, Only Girl Alive is a fantastic thriller from what promises to be an exciting new series. Thriller lovers, add this to your TBR now!
TW: Religious indoctrination, religious trauma, sexual abuse
Only Girl Alive by Holly S. Roberts
Detective Eve Bennet #1
Creepy cultish religious group with a murdered family and a killer to be found sees Detective Eve Bennet’s crime team called in to find out who the culprit was. This is the first book in a new series that shows promise.
What I liked:
* Eve: strong, intelligent, raised in the FDLS, survivor, sees more than most, in charge of special team to supervise crimes related to the FDLS, difficult backstory, haunted by her past, supported and supportive of her team, intriguing, look forward to finding out more about her
* Clyde: ex-sniper, seasoned homicide detective, strong, intelligent, quiet, divorced, patient, wise, interested in Eve
* Collin, Ray, Bina, and Tamm: the rest of Eve’s team chosen for their skills, personalities, backgrounds, and what they bring as individuals to make the team strong
* That I was drawn in from page one and compelled to read to the bitter end – I cared about the characters and how the case would be resolved
* Seeing the cult through Eve’s memories and experiences as she applied it to the solving of the case
* The group dynamics and character development of the team
* The potential romance brewing between Eve and Clyde
* Thinking about cults and how people become involved with and coerced by them
* The way Eve stood up to Aaron and others from the FDLS
* The way the case was resolved and wondering what will happen next
* Reading a new-to-me author that I look forward to reading again
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that the abuse mentioned in this story no doubt exists and not only in cults
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
What an incredible start to a new series this is, I was hooked almost instantaneously. The dark and murky world of some communities in Utah has intrigued me for quite a while so I found this book fascinating.
Eve and her team are a close knit establishment team and I loved that the author gave us a little run down of each team member and a hint towards what kind of personality they have, this sets you up for the rest of the story and beyond.
I was absolutely enthralled in this story and stayed up late one night to finish it as I just couldn’t put it down.
The flashbacks to Eve’s childhood and the abuse she suffered was heartbreaking but it gives you the reason why she does what she does to try and bring it all down, the storyline was obviously fictional but a lot of it happens in real life too which make it even more chilling to read.
The author is a former detective and you can really tell with all the descriptive detail that’s in the story.
I can’t want to read the next book in the series.

Holly S. Roberts is a retired homicide detective and the USA TODAY Bestselling Author of Play and Ruck (Completion Sports series). She is excited to announce a new crime thriller series published by Bookouture Hachette, releasing on 1/13/2023. For Holly's spicier side, you'll love her anti-hero bad boys who will curl your toes (Hotter Than Hell series) and a lighter (not so spicy) humorous paranormal series with shifters and Hellhounds (Marinah and King). She also writes cozy mysteries under the pen name Suzie Ivy. She lives with her two spoiled dogs high in the mountains. Holly is a self-defense instructor and owned a martial arts gym where she taught women to kick butt.
“Sinners waited for salvation in the next rooms.”
Eve is excellent at her job. She leads her team well, and their dynamic is close to perfect. Eve's unique qualification makes her so good at what she does- she grew up in a polygamist cult. Her childhood was filled with brainwashing, torment, abuse, and the teachings of fundamentalist Mormons. When the team gets dispatched to investigate a family annihilation, Eve expects things to be complicated. These people don’t trust her. But the truth, and the past, are about to explode.
Holy buckets. This will be an incredible series, and I am beyond excited to read the next book. I could not put this down.
I loved the characters; Eve is strong, intelligent, and guarded. Clyde is smart, gentle, and protective. Bina is swift and capable. Ray and Collin are comedic relief mixed with intelligence and talent. The dynamic of this team is beautiful.
The research that went into bringing this story to life is evident and thorough. I appreciated Holly’s experience as a homicide detective and her attention to detail.
The plot of this book was terrifying and fascinating. The things that happened it was like watching a documentary. I enjoyed the writing, the way the story developed, and the way the plot played out.
I am looking forward to the next case this team investigates!
I was very excited when I read the book description! It combines two of my favorite things to read: crime and polygamist cults.
I was crazy for this book. I inhaled it in mere hours! The author has done her homework and writes authentically about the conditions, beliefs, and situations of a fundamentalist polygamist cult in southern Utah.
I liked Eve’s task force, especially Tamm, the power behind the scene.
I have read many memoirs and other books about polygamist cults so I enjoyed this new rendition.
I’m ready for the next one.
Predictable but enjoyable novel
Great introduction to Detective/ forensic photographer Eve Bennet and her team. Very good set up for the first book in hopefully an ongoing series.
Within the first few pages there is the layout for a backstory with Eve and the people she is investigating.
Main story is about murder, within the close knit Mormon Fundamentalists society in rural Utah. A lot of procedural speech in this book, so if not a fan, you may not love it, however, I enjoy this and it’s even better as the author has a law enforcement background. This really gives it a sense of authenticity.
With this book having deep roots in Eve’s backstory of her childhood in the Mormon Fundamentalists, I wonder if that will be a strong core subject of the series to follow? I think so, especially with her family.
Are you a fan of intriguing crime stories? Maybe you like to solve puzzles and mind games? Then Only Girl Alive by Holly S. Roberts is a book you should not miss.
A brutal quadruple murder and detectives in a race against time. But if we say that it is a matter of killing a family. And that polygamous family, you must assume that it is something unusual and interesting.
If you are interested, don't miss Detective Eve in her search for the killer. One such, his two wives and his son were killed, and his daughter is nowhere to be found. What is hidden behind the closed doors of this polygamous society?
I believe that all fans of this genre will enjoy this new interesting story, with well-built characters and enough twists to keep you on your toes until the very end.
Book 1 in the Eve Bennett series.
When Eve and her specialist team are called in to the horrific murder of an entire family they must quickly piece together what happened before anyone else gets hurt. When they realise a child is missing they know someone is hiding something. But why?
I was fascinated and horrified knowing this community actually exists in this day and age.
I was gripped at the start but I must admit I found it a bit monotonous halfway through. Once events moved on I was gripped once again.
This is an unusual police thriller and I look forward to reading book 2.
Only Girl Alive introduces readers to Eve Bennet. Who grew up in Utah's polygamist Mormon community before her mum rescued her. And now she works as a detective heading up a specialist unit that investigates the biggest cases, many of which involve the community Eve was rescued from.
And in this debut novel Eve and her team are called in by Eve's step brother Aaron. A county attorney and polygamist member to investigate the murder of the Tanner family.
But all is not as it seems and Aaron was light on the details, including the fact one member of the family is missing.
And Eve's team soon discover something much more disturbing inside the house.
But with a community that doesn't talk to outsiders, Eve and her team know they have their work cut out.
And with twists and a fast-paced and intriguing storyline. Only Girl Alive was an enjoyable debut novel. That certainly entertained and offered lots of mystery and shocks along the way.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Only Girl Alive by Holly Roberts that I read and reviewed.
I had a lot of mixed feelings about this book. I really liked Eve Bennet and her team but I was not a huge fan of the subject matter. I am not into books with religious undertones and with this having the Mormon Religion witch I know very little about and don’t agree with the polygamist lifestyle I just wast not feeling how the people the book was written about lived. I think it is because I could never live like that it just annoys me that woman do.
As for the mystery and what took place with the crime was crazy and when it came out what took place it was insane how it was covered us and how the community covered it up. This book was really played on many emotions and one of them was anger.
I guess I will have to wait for the second book in the series before I make a final decision on the series but this does hold promising if it can branch away from the polygamist community as well.
I am giving Only Girl Alive four out of five stars.
I had not read anything by this author, but I will definitely watch for the next book in this series! Detective Eve Bennet has worked her way up to lead detective and her next case is the murder of four family members in a polygamist sect. This case will be personal for Eve, for as a child her mother had joined the sect for protection. Eve’s mother was forced from the sect while Eve remained until her mother was able to free her, but it has strained their relationship. Eve is determined to find out who murdered these four individuals and why? She comes up against a former stepbrother who is now the county attorney, but she doesn’t back down. She forces him to comply with her “requests” even as her life may be in danger from members of the sect. She leads an exceptional team who pursue every lead to find the guilty party. There are plenty of suspects, but she and her team know that these killings were personal. A thoroughly intriguing mystery that had me guessing until the end. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
Absolutely authentic down to the last detail. Compelling, horrific crime that will have you rooting for Eve and her top notch team to nail everyone responsible.

Only Girl Alive is the first book in the Detective Eve Bennet series by Holly S. Roberts. This was the first book I've read by the author and I am absolutely hooked!
I found this book to be so unique. Detective Eve Bennet has such interesting life experiences that makes her uniquely qualified to investigate crime that occurs in a small town in Utah, that is home to a polygamous sect and lots of secrets.
I thought this story was fascinating! I loved the twists and turns and watching the team of detectives work to solve this horrific crime!
I can't wait to see what's to come in future books! I'll definitely be reading them!!!
