Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
This wasn't the 'delightful romcom' I was expecting from the blurb and other reviews. I didn't like Ada, the main female character; she has been lied to by her previous boyfriend but thinks nothing of being less than truthful with Neil, and I thought the amount of strong language was completely unnecessary. I'm not a fan of Agatha Christie and this part of the plot bored me. I read more than a third of the book, finding it predictable yet difficult to get into, before giving up.
This book tells the story of Ada, who after a disastrous break up moved back home and sets up her own PR firm. But when she meets a virtual stranger online can this lead to more?
I really enjoyed this book. Ada felt really real and her heartbrake shone through massively. I really warmed to her and trying to navigate moving back in with her mum. I liked the plot of this a lot and loved all her exploits. It was a sort of modern dating reflective book. All in all a great read and an author I’d like to read more of.
Perfect holiday read. Like all books of this style, you know what's going to happen but it doesn't make it a bad read. Characters were great and a great debut for Sam Canning, I hope to read more from her in the future
"Virtual Strangers" by Sam Canning is a delightful blend of modern romance and online connections. Set against the backdrop of Edinburgh, the story follows Ada, who finds herself torn between two worlds: the real-life connection she shares with journalist Fraser and the virtual bond she forms with a mysterious stranger on an Agatha Christie fan fiction site.
Canning expertly navigates the complexities of love in the digital age, exploring themes of authenticity, connection, and the blurred lines between online and offline relationships. The chemistry between Ada and Fraser is palpable, while her growing feelings for her online confidant add an intriguing layer of tension to the narrative.
With its charming characters and engaging storyline, "Virtual Strangers" is a captivating read that will resonate with anyone who has ever found themselves caught between the allure of the digital world and the warmth of real-life connections.
I really enjoyed Virtual Strangers.
It's You've Got Mail for Millennials!
There's lots of funny moments in this as well as of course some romance and spicier bits too.
It's also enjoyable to read a book not set in London or America.
Ada has moved back up to Edinburgh and is hoping to kick-start a freelance PR career. She has one dodgy client who is a calamity and walking PR disaster!
Rather than work at home she sets up in a co-working space in a lovely sounding coffee shop and ends up striking up a table share and friendship with local reporter Fraser.
Ada also is an Agatha Christie fan and has been on a fan forum site writing some fanfiction and striking up a bit of a pen pal romance with a virtual stranger.
I loved the friendship blossoming between Ada and Fraser and the random adventures they do in the quest for a quirky news story.
The characters were all really likeable (except for Dan urgh) and I really enjoyed the banter which genuinely made me laugh out loud.
I could really relate to Ada's best friend struggling with the juggle of work and being a mam and maintaining friendships with people who do not have kids.
The emotional development we see both through Ada, Fraser and several of the supporting characters was also really well done.
Virtual Strangers is a really fun, charming and utterly enjoyable read.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Sorry it has taken me a while to give the feedback on this. I started and stopped and nearly put it down as it took me a while to get into. Once the story got going and I got in to it I couldn't put it down, great characters and really enjoyable rom com. I truly enjoyed this book,
3.5
Ada has moved back with her mum, in Edinburgh, after her relationship failed whilst leaving in London. She has set up her business as a freelance publicist and has her first client.
She is trying to navigate the single life, being set up on dates by her best friend, who is married with 2 kids, and meeting a guy online. Also, she strikes a friendship with the guy she shares the table with at her coffice.
Will she find the person who will mend her broken heart?
I truly enjoyed this book, the only reason I did not give it 4 stars is that it took me a while to get into it and nearly put it down.
This was a really great read. It is a cute rom com set in one my favourite cities- Edinburgh!
Ada has recently moved back home following a failed relationship. She has set up her own PR firm, which could be going better. Working out of her local coffee shop, Ada strikes up a friendship with journalist Fraser, following a stolen table incident.
Ada believes that Fraser is. in a relationship and she has struck up a virtual connection with a mystery person online via an Agatha Christie fanfic site, so this new 'thing' with Fraser isn't really a thing. is it?
The development of Ada and Fraser's relationship was exciting to read. They get themselves into very funny situations attending various events throughout Edinburgh. There is a lot of banter, wit and humour and overall a really great book.
Very cute! Edinburgh is my favourite city to visit and this made me want to pack a bag and head back!
I just sadly could not get into this book and I'm honestly gutted as I really loved the premise of it.
I just really didnt get on with the main character and found myself starting to skim read.
This is definitely a 'me' issue because everyone else seems to have loved this one so don't listen to me and go try it yourself!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A quick, easy and cute rom com set in Scotland. I knew from the blurb that I was going to love it and I wasn't wrong. I couldn't put it down
There were so many laugh-out-loud moments in this book that I had to stop reading it on my commute to work as I was getting funny looks! The witty banter between Ada and Fraser was believable and appealed to my sense of humour. I also enjoyed the finding your way with love and friendship storyline ran ran through the book. Highly recommend.
A lovely book with great well written characters. I loved the story line and highly recommended this one. A great read.
A wonderful book of second chances. The main characters were loveable and relatable. As always with a rom com, you’re shouting out- don’t do that- tell her how you feel. Unputdownable for me, thank you
Ah I enjoyed this book so much! It would make a great rom com movie!
After moving back to Scotland, Ava sets up her own PR firm working out of a coffee shop. It is there that she meets Fraser who also works from there every day as a local journalist. They both became friends...and my favourite characters in this story.
Ada is trying to get back on the dating scene and meets someone unexpectedly on an Agatha Christie fan fiction website...not something I was expecting! How can Fraser compete with the mystery man....
I won't give anything away but there are laughs, heartbreak, arguments and some serious topics covered through Ada's friendships.
Thoroughly enjoyed it, I did see the ending coming but it was still totally worth the read!
Thank you to @netgalley and @bonnierbooks for the opportunity to review.

Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for an advance review copy.
I’m not sure I loved this one, but it was an enjoyable and charming read, follows the trials and tribulations of Ada’s love life. Fraser does seem lovely so wanting to understand the truth about him and Ada’s mystery online forum suitor kept me reading.
An enjoyable, lightweight read, funny and heartwarming. The story was just a bit predictable, but the setting of Edinburgh was good and made you feel that you would like to visit to get to know the city.
A wonderful book of second chances. The main characters were loveable and relatable. As always with a rom com, you’re shouting out- don’t do that- tell her how you feel. Unputdownable for me, thank you
Really enjoyed this book. Very likeable characters and a lovely storyline. Nice to have a book based north of the border as well. Yes, it was a little predictable but that did not detract from the enjoyment of the story, nice when a rom com works out how you think it should. Recommended.
I found some of this story a little bit predictable, but i was very glad it went the way I was hoping. It was easy to read, very captivating and I definitely will be recommending it. The main characters were lovable, the book itself was very relatable and it felt with the highs and lows of life in a very fun way.
