Never immersed into this not a fan of ww. But decided to give this a chance not for me unfortunately really wanted to like it. Cover and title are superb.
The Girl with the Red Hair is a story based on true events, and inspired by Hannie Schaft, a young Dutch woman who worked with the Resistance to save lives and stamp out the Nazi evil. A shy girl growing up, Hannie showed incredible courage and fortitude and sacrificed so much for a cause she wholeheartedly believed in. There are incredibly difficult scenes in this book, scenes that made me feel revulsion and deep sadness. But also such admiration for the bravery of Hannie and others who risked their lives to save others. Despite torture and interrogation, Hannie never revealed any information to the Nazis and she died a hero.
This story is both a testament to the best of humanity, but also a stark reminder of the evil man is capable of. I've read many stories of WWII, but this one really affected me and has made me want to read more about this amazing woman.
Wow, just wow, this is an incredibly powerful story! I have read quite a bit of really good historical fiction based around the events of the Second World War recently, but this one blew me away!
The Girl with the Red Hair tells the story of Hannie Schaft, a young Dutch Law student who witnesses the injustice and horror experienced by her Jewish friends and neighbours and becomes involved in the Resistance movement.
This is an incredibly moving account through the eyes of this brave young lady. The author acknowledges that some of the detail is fictional as only limited personal correspondence survives. However, i'd love to believe that there was an element of romance involved in her relationship with fellow Resistance fighter Jan Bonekemp or at least hope that their friendship brought some comfort in such harrowing times.
Its really important that these stories are told. I will definitely look up more information about Hannie Schaft as she played such an important role and should never be forgotten.
Thank you for this ARC - what a fab first historical fiction debut. I urge any WW2 fans or historical fiction lovers to get your hands on this. So well written, looking forward to reading others by Buddy Jackson!
Hadn’t realised this was based on a true story. Wasn’t as emotional as I expected but fascinating to read about this brave young woman
It's a good thing that there's a lot of books about the people who were fighting against the Nazist
This is a good one, compelling and well researched.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
The Girl with the Red Hair is based on the astonishing true story of Hannie Schaft (the girl with the red hair of the title).
Hannie is nineteen, at University in Amsterdam when she sort of falls in to joining the resistance. She has never agreed with the German occupation of her home country but she hasn’t considered fighting back until she understands with horrifying certainty what could happen to her new found university friends who are both Jewish.
Having lived in the countryside prior to university, Hannie hasn’t exactly been sheltered from the war, but her arrival in the city of Amsterdam has certainly opened her eyes to the horrors of the Nazi rule, and the complicity of some of her fellow countrymen.
Determined to help her friends, her rebellion against the occupiers starts in a small way, but she is soon one of the most active members of the resistance putting her life in danger every day, to help save others.
When the Nazi's ramp up their rouding up of Jews, Hannie only has one solution to save her friends. Take them to her quiet countryside home town, and hope her Mother and Father have the same level of morality that she does.
Hannie's family would not be unique in hiding those in need, there are many many stories from the period of those who put their lives on the line to help other to safety. But I don't believe any if them are as unique as Hannie's.
I can't say too much more about this remarkable book without giving anything away. However, I was surprised to find that this book was the authors debut.
I really look forward to reading more from them.
I’m loving the strong female heroines in the historical fiction books I’ve read of late and this is no exception.
It’s the remarkable story of a girl called Hannie Schaft who was recruited into the Dutch Resistance during German occupation in WWII.
She is a 19 year old girl with red hair that you will never forget
“If you mess with this kitten, you better wear gloves”
“You can walk right past your fate your whole life without seeing it”
Her courage was made all the poignant as Hannie was a non Jew.
Jannie was defiant in the face of occupation, was loyal to her family, friends and community, determining to protect them.
Well written with such compassion, harrowing and emotional but compelling - a tough read.
Can thoroughly recommend to historical fiction fans.
Thanks Buzzy Jackson for bringing her story to life.
Thanks @buzzy_jackson, @michaeljbooks & @netgalley for the eARC
What a fascinating book. Fact is seamlessly intertwined with fiction to tell the story of Dutch Resistance fighter Hannie Schaft. It’s 1940 and Hannie is just 19 years old and she cannot just stand by as the Nazi’s take over her country. Clearly meticulously researched and well written this is an awe inspiring story of an incredibly brave young woman who risked everything for her country.
Briefly, alongside other resistance members Hannie undertook numerous missions to undermine the German occupation, some relatively simple, such as stealing ID cards others incredibly dangerous, the assassinations of Nazis and collaborators. Identified at one such assignation by her red hair she was on Hitlers most wanted list.
The sheer bravery, and the audacity of Hannie is actually hard to fathom. The risks and consequences meted out, that affected not just her but friends and family, were shocking. What is even more shocking is that I had never heard of her. This book will bring out all the emotions, no matter how much you read about the Nazi atrocities there are always more revelations. I felt emotionally drained when I finished it. Just a brilliant read, particularly if you are a lover of historical fiction based on fact. Do make sure you read the authors notes at the end.
This book doesn’t ask for sympathy or pity, just the acceptance that War is fought by many people, and the ways of revenge are not pleasant. Female Resistance workers are not all in the guise of Allo Allo, some may deliver parcels of supplies to desperate groups, some deal in contraband items and underground newspapers, others have a natural ability with weapons and are deadly with a gun, but the underlying motto is to always try to be human despite all despair.
Nannie Schaft is the titular girl, Dutch, who joined the fighters in Amsterdam. At the outbreak of War, she volunteered to work at the Refugee Alliance, helping the Jews, as they became more persecuted by the German occupiers.
I learnt so much from this book. The horrors and daily privation’s suffered by the citizens of Amsterdam and Holland, the gradual limitations placed upon the Jewish inhabitants, such ignorance and disregard for members of the human race, new details always make one ashamed for the many blind eyes and deaf ears employed, but the overriding concern was survival.
I liked Hannie and her endeavours, such strength and conviction that what she was doing was justified and right. Seen from a uniquely female voice, it is a very thought provoking novel, that asks, would we have been so brave?
Very intense and grim, it is an excellent reminder of the despair experienced in those dark times. It deserves to be on School bookshelves.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers, Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House, for my advance digital copy, freely given in exchange for my honest review. I will leave a copy to Goodreads and Amazon UK.
This book is based on true events set in Holland. Nazi Germany has invaded, the Jew's are being forced out, and resistance is punishable by death. I haven't heard of Hannie before reading this book.
Hannie, the girl with the red hair, joins the resistance to fight back against the Nazi. She did what she had to do to protect her family, friends, and her country. I found her incredibly brave to take on such a role during the war.
It's quite a mixture of emotions from feeling hopeful to a pit of your stomach fear, from heart-warming to heartbreaking.
There was such a lot of research poured into this book. I was both pleased and saddened to see what happened to some of the names in the book and what they went on to achieve.
This is definitely a book I want on my bookshelf to pass down the generations.
An intriguing story that keeps you captivated till the end. Thank you Michael Joseph for inviting me to witness 'The Girl with the Red Hair, a true hero!
The Girl with the Red Hair is a fictional story based on the real life Dutch Resistance Fighter, Hannie Schaft.
Along with her resistance colleagues, Truus & Freddie Oversteegen, Jan and Hendrik, these brave people were determined to do anything they could to get the Germans out of their homeland, Nazi occupied Netherlands.
This story made me stop and think about if I could have been that brave, to fight for my country when you feel so alone.
It is an inspiring book with an immense amount of research. The story is emotional, one minute I would feel terrified that they would be caught and then the next moment feel elated that they had managed to achieve what they set out to do.
This is one of those books that will be with me for a long time.
My thanks to NetGalley and Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
The blazing debut novel based on the unsung true story of Hannie Schaft, a young-woman-turned-Dutch-Resistance-fighter...This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher for the copy. What a gorgeous book!
4+
“Hannie, Hannie. Het meisje met het rode haar” Hannie Shaft, The Girl with the Red Hair. This is her story, of how she joins the Dutch Resistance and becomes so notorious she’s added to Hitlers most wanted list. In this excellent debut, Buzzy Jackson weaves fact with fiction to bring Hannie alive.
I have heard of Hannie Shaft and know something about the Dutch Resistance but feel I have a greater understanding now. The author has conducted some phenomenal and painstaking research in order to produce a heartbreaking story of sheer courage and bravery that is awe inspiring. There’s no doubt Hannie lives on her wits and has more guts than most but her portrayal here really does make her feel human as at times she is understandably fearful as danger and the possibility of betrayal is all around. The author really captures life under a Nazi yoke with all the hardships, the deprivation, the horrors and the cruelty which never ceases to shock to the core. The deteriorating situation is depicted vividly and the tension is palpable. The ending makes me want to weep - heroes all and I and many others salute you. The afterword is well worth reading too.
So, if you are a fan of Historical Fiction then this is a must read or if you want to understand more about the Dutch Resistance and Hannie in particular, then this is your book as the author does a fine job.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Penguin Michael Joseph for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
A fascinating look at the life of Hannie Schaft, a young female Dutch Resistance fighter. The story follows her young life, how she met the Resistance, and the ways she helped fight for freedom.
I didn't know anything about Hannie before reading, but since finishing the book, I have read up on her. Her story is tragic, but also strangely uplifting - she was determined to fight for those who couldn't, and she absolutely did.
A beautifully written book, a tad slow at the start perhaps, but such an important story to read.
Firstly, I want to put aside the worry that, The girl with the red hair sounds like just another WWII novel, but in this case, the protagonist really was known by this name, and it is crucial to the plot.
I really enjoyed this epic underdog story. Hannie is an amazing real life character and I’m so pleased her story has been brought to life in this novel.
I really enjoyed this read it was well written with a compelling storyline and well developed characetrs whom I loved, especially the protagonist. I was drawn in from the start and became fully invested stright from th4e get go.
