Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
This book centres on 2 couples, and it slowly reveals that Nina's husband Jake has gone missing and that Lily may have been the last person to see him. I say slowly because I thought the story went on and on, full of meaningless and unnecessary detail - half a page detailing how 2 people entered through a door was way too long, especially as it added nothing to the story. There was a lot of repetition too, especially about Nina's mother's health conditions. Some of the events were totally predictable, and whilst the final twist wasn't it was far from realistic. I persevered and finished this book but wish I hadn't bothered. I won't be reading anything else by this author, it was far too slow and lacked suspense
This is a page turner. It is a well written domestic thriller. It is full of suspense and mystery. It is told from multiple perspectives.
Intense, unsettling, brilliant
Once you start this you won't put it down
Highly recommended - Mary writes a great book !
I was hooked on this novel & had to keep reading it. Although unsettling, I found it hard to put down. I was thrown by the twist & enjoyed it.
This was an intense read. I had no idea what was coming and all of my guesses were so very wrong. Another enjoyable read from Kubica.
A fast paced plot with some not particularly likeable characters. A great many secrets and lies, some twists but also fairly predictable.
Mary has done it again, love everything she writes and this was no different. Prepare for a wild ride through this gripping narrative, where each twist and turn adds a layer of tension that will keep you eagerly reading well into the night.
A good read
Will keep you guessing till the end
Would definitely recommend this book
Can’t wait for Mary’s next book
Thanks NetGalley
I dont recall reading a previous book by this writer but within the first couple of chapters I was drawn in. It was a very easy read with lots of twists and turns. Really enjoyable
I've never read anything by Mary Kubica so wasn't too sure what to expect from this story but I definitely wasn't disappointed. Full of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, wonderfully written!
This is a good domestic thriller, which although it started off slowly, it soon picked up pace and kept me engaged.
The story is about Lily and Christian Scott, and Nina and Jake Hayes, who know each other because Lily and Nina work at the same school. There are complicated interactions between all of them. Jake has disappeared, but where could he be? Lily attacked him with a piece of rock after he came on to her in the woods. But what happened after that? The book is full of secrets, twists and lies. Who can we trust in this story?
This is the second book I have read by Mary Kubica, and I enjoyed it, so I will be reading more of her books. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
Just the Nicest Couple was Just. So. Boring. I couldn't finish it, despite being intrigued by the premise. Whoever wrote the synopsis on the back of the book deserves an award because they made a dull, predictable story sound somewhat intriguing. The talent!
I didn't like any of the characters in this story, and I think in a domestic thriller you have to at least care about someone otherwise what's the point? I'm not going to be bothered about who did it or who died.
This is such a shame because I've really enjoyed some of this author's books before, but this one is a major no from me.
I was quickly drawn in and I inhaled each page.
The ending was a little predictable but that did take away from my overall enjoyment.
This really is a fantastic read and one that I’d thoroughly recommend.
This is the story of two couples, Nina and Jake and Lily and Christian. Nina and Jake have an argument and next morning as Jake isn’t there she assumed he has gone to work. When he doesn’t arrive home she initially thinks that he is sulking but eventually has to contact the police and report him missing. Nina and Lily are close friends as they teach at the same school. Lily thinks she may have been the last person to see Jake and confesses to Christian. They decide that no one can find this out but don’t realise that Nina is determined to find out the truth. This is a book full of secrets, lies, suspense and intrigue. A recommended read.
Thanks to Netgalley and HQ for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I read Local Woman Missing last year and absolutely loved it so I knew I wanted to read this one when I saw it but this book was not as good as Local Woman Missing in my opinion.
There were some aspects of this book that I really enjoyed. I really enjoyed that this book was written from the perspectives of the spouses of the husband who has gone missing and the wife who was the last person to see him, which added to the suspense of the book as you were kept in the dark the majority of the time.
There were a few plot twists which I guessed pretty early on in the book so I found the book to be quite predictable which meant that I did not enjoy this book as much as I find if I think a thriller book is predictable it instantly becomes boring to me as I know what is going to happen next.
I really enjoyed Mary Kubica's writing in this book and found that the storyline flowed really nicely.
I will definitely check out future Mary Kubica novels even though I didn't enjoy this one as much as I wished I would.
I really enjoyed the premise of this book and how instead of reading the perspective of the main characters involved in the incident, you actually read from their significant others.
If you enjoy domestic thrillers I would definitely give this a read.
Thank you to netgalley & the publisher for providing me a Arc copy for review. All thoughts and opinions are completely my own.
This is an absolute gem!!! I’ve been so excited about this book and it hasn’t disappointed.absolutely will be recommending this book to anyone who will listen to me.
It's been a while since I've read a book by Mary Kubica and diving into this one, I was remembered why I liked her previous books. She has a really easy-to-read writing style and I thought the pace of this book was good and at no point was I bored, spurred on to find out more. The characters were a bit of a mixed bag for me personally - I think they all had red flags but then this made them quite interesting, albeit very selfish. They also made the stupidest decisions at times. I think we could have done with some flashbacks to get a better sense of Jake as a person, rather than just via Nina's POV. Some of the twists I saw coming but I really liked the final one and thought it was well done. I was disappointed at how quickly the ending was wrapped up, it felt a little rushed for my liking.
Two couples, two close friends, one missing husband…
Jake Hayes is missing. This much is certain. At first, his wife Nina thinks he is blowing off steam somewhere after their heated fight the night before. But then a day goes by. Two days. Five. And Jake is still nowhere to be found.
Nina’s friend Lily thinks she may have been the last to see Jake before he went missing. After Lily confesses everything to her husband, Christian, the two decide that nobody can find out what happened leading up to Jake’s disappearance, especially not Nina. But Nina is out there looking for Jake, and she won’t stop until the truth is discovered.
Queen of suspense Mary Kubica delivers a high-octane, edge-of-your-seat thriller filled with delicious lies and shocking betrayals, and shows how even the deepest secrets will always find a way to the surface.
What a thrilling read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.
I enjoy dual narrators so this book was great, following Christian and Nina, one half each of two separate couples we see the situation unfold as Nina's husband goes missing.
I found some of the decisions made Christian to be a little unrealistic but under the circumstances he was in understandable.
The red herrings were enough to keep me guessing until the final reveal. I really enjoyed this one.
