A quick but explosive read. Gripping from page 1 right up until the ending. One to recommend. 4 stars from me. My thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for the advance reader copy.

Great to read a murder mystery set in PE and Cape Town, as well as several other places in South Africa. A woman is kidnapped and murdered, her husband dies out of the shock, which leaves another man, looking for the truth. He finds more than he was looking for, and nearly gets killed on the way.

Even though it started off with the woman being kidnapped it felt to me like it took awhile for the story to get going, but after that I really enjoyed the story. I like the flawed and vivid main character as well as the very South African characteristics of not trusting the police, or outsiders, as well as the richness of some, and the poorness of others. It is a refreshing and honest read that I can recommend to readers tired of all the books set in the UK or the US.

Und hierum geht es auf Deutsch: Wir sind in Südafrika, und Sol Nemo, ehemaliger Polizist und aktuell Privatdetektiv, wird damit beauftragt, bei der Lösegeldübergabe in einem Entführungsfall mitzuwirken. Das Opfer, die ehemalige Sängerin Mira, ist die Frau seines Ziehvaters Frank, und Frank will alles daran setzen, Mira wohlbehalten wieder zu bekommen. Doch die Übergabe geht schief, und Miras Leben ist in Gefahr. Sol beginnt, weiter zu ermitteln und gerät in einen Sumpf aus Korruption, Geldwäsche und Betrug, der grössere Kreise zieht, als je zu vermuten. Nichts und niemand scheint zu sein, was man denkt, und alle Spuren scheinen nach Kapstadt und Miras Vergangenheit zu zeigen – und Sol ist mehr als einmal in Lebensgefahr….
Ich hab mir das Buch spontan des Titels wegen geholt – ich war gerade in Kapstadt, ich liebe Krimis, und auch wenn mir der Autor nichts sagte, habe ich zugegriffen. Und was soll ich sagen: Volltreffer. Das war ein richtig guter, packender Thriller, ein echter page-turner, und hat mich voll abgeholt. Sol ist ein Privatdetektiv der etwas anderen Sorte: er ist reich durch das Erbe seines leiblichen Vaters, dunkelhäutig, und depressiv veranlagt. Immer wieder holt ihn seine Krankheit ein, und wir als Leser begleiten ihn, wie er zwischendurch in eine Klinik eincheckt – fand ich spannend, wie der Autor das Thema Mental Health mühelos in den Roman eingebaut hat. Der harte Private Investigator, der immer wieder mit seinen Dämonen zu kämpfen hat. Hat mir gut gefallen, dass dieses Thema hier integriert wurde, und zwar, ohne es in den Vordergrund zu schieben.
Charmant fand ich auch das Lokalkolorit: die Geschichte spielt unten am Western und Eastern Cape, Sol fährt die N2 zwischen Kapstadt und Port Elizabeth auf und ab, und da ich die Gegend jetzt kenne, hat mir das viel Spass gemacht, ihn auf seinen Road Trips zu begleiten. Das war für mich jetzt ein Bonus 😉.
Der Krimi ist rasant, wir haben ein permanent hohes Spannungslevel, es passiert echt viel, und es gibt viele Actionszenen. Die Story kann ich mir auch echt gut als Film vorstellen; es gibt hier echt viel Action-Potential.
Ich fand es flüssig geschrieben; und mich hat es wie gesagt abgeholt. Spannender Krimi aus dem zeitgenössischem Südafrika mit einem interessantem Helden – und wenn ich das recht verstanden habe, ist das der Auftakt zu einer neuen Serie rund um Sol. Sehr cool, sehr vielversprechend, ich bin gerne auch weiterhin dabei 😉!
Auf seiner Webseite hat der Autor ein paar Bilder und eine Karte zu den Romanschauplätzen zur Verfügung gestellt (HIER), und das finde ich eine nette Idee. Ich mag sowas gerne.
Bleibt mir nur noch mich bei Netgalley und dem Verlag für das Rezensionsexemplar zu bedanken. War für mich ein Überraschungscoup, und Sol und seinen Autor werde ich mir merken!

How can you not love a book when the title includes the word "Chanteuse"! I loved this first book of the Sol Nemo series that was written by British author John Constable. Constable keeps the action going from page 1, yet by action I do not mean the typical guns blazing unbelievable action in many books. Instead here the action deals with the kidnapping of a former club singer (chanteuse) who was married to Sol Nemo's father figure. Why would she be kidnapped? It all revolves around a demand for $50 million and what goes wrong at the drop off. Really well written with believable action. Nem0, a former member of the South African police and who is now a PI, is both the hunter and the hunted in this book. The plot takes us to many locales in South Africa and includes many small personal details that are missing in other books (lots of good references to Sol's eating at different locations). Fast paced, page turner with a good plot and characters are well developed over the span of the book, for instance Sol is mixed race but not what you might think, with a Dutch father and Indian mother. Well done. Without wanting to give away more of the book or plot, I was extremely impressed with this book and Mr. Constable is a very gracious author who took time from his schedule to discuss the book with me, which added to my pleasure, A good author, a good book, You cannot go wrong with the first entry in the Sol Nemo series. Book 2 to come out later in 2023.'
Give this book a 4.5* with that extra .5 just because of the use of the out of favor word "Chanteuse" in the title! Good work Mr. Constable!

PI Sol Nemo is on the job when a friend’s wife gets kidnapped. However, at a meeting with the kidnapper things go wrong, including Sol getting shot. After that, he must work hard to find the culprit.

This one really just jumps into the action. There was not much background so that threw me off. If you’re looking for an action packed book though, this is for you.

The author really brings Cape Town to life in this fast paced thriller. I haven’t read many books set in South Africa and this was amazing - really descriptive about both physical setting and the cultural feel of the place. The plot is good and there are many colourful characters to keep track of.

When I heard about this story, it was the description and the title that interested me, particularly the use of the word "chanteuse". I imagined perhaps a story about an enigmatic woman. I thought the cover design was very striking, and I was pleased to be approved for a copy to review.

I expected a darker type of mystery novel, and I would describe this as noir. The writing was rich, atmospheric and elegant, and I quickly warmed to the main character. The story had an eerie feel that maintained my interest throughout. I would be curious to see if there are, or will be, any other books featuring this character.
