The third instalment in Amy Sparkes' House at the Edge of Magic series continues the chaotic magic of the previous two books, but ventures more outside of the house and into the Beyond.
I loved returning to the characters I liked, and I really liked the shops and streets that Nine explores as an expansion to the world that Amy Sparkes has created, unfortunately, I personally don't care for the sister villain too much, so was disappointed that she showed up again, and I felt like this book lost some of the laugh-out-loud moments that the other books had, so it wasn't quite as enjoyable for me, but I know plenty of young readers who are excited to read this and they will love it, so will keep recommending this series!
This is a witty and charming book with a wonderful array of characters getting into all kinds of mischief.
The world building is vivid and fun and the characters jump from the page.
A brilliant sequel in this chaotic series. As we have come to know, not all is as it seems and there are plenty of twists, turns and of course magic. Kept me guessing, with plenty of laughs along the way too.
Both my children loved this story full of great characters and adventures, magical places and some interesting topics to discuss over between them.
We loved the cover so much and it definitely tell the right story from inside the pages.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to read this book so I cannot give an accurate or good review of the book. I will be looking into purchasing it as i have read the first book in the series and liked it a lot.
What more to say about this one then that it's PURE FUN! This is magic, adventure, whimsy, childhood, everything wrapped in a beautiful little book. Another brilliantly entertaining book.
My 8 year old daughter loved this, so much so that after reading it quickly because she couldn't put it down, she re read it immediately.
Full of magic, adventure and distraction from a grim January which she was completely engrossed in from the opening chapters.
Will be buying a paperback copy as it is one she will return to again and that cover is incredible!
A huge recommendation from her.
Hugely enjoyed this imaginative and fun adventure, with a great cast of characters. I loved Beyond, a kind of marketplace or shopping area, where you had to buy something from each seller if you wanted to leave. I enjoyed visiting the Secret Shop of Secrets (very difficult to find), Wicks and Wax the candlemakers, the This-and-That shop, and of curse the magical bookstore (rarely open but when it does it tells you which book to take, which is exactly the one you need!). All this is humorously told, and there is a satisfying power struggle for the secret formula plus the mystery of Nine’s mother.
This is the first book in the series that I picked up, and although you can enjoy it a stand alone adventure (like I did), I recommend starting with book 1 to get Nine's backstory and more about the characters and their relationships, especially if giving or reading to children.
.
Another brilliant instalment in the adventures of Nine and her friends who live in a crazy travelling house. This time the gang find themselves shopping in the land of Beyond, whilst searching for Professor Dish. At the same time, Nine discovers more clues to her mother's life in the house and to her own past. This is a wonderful adventure series, with plenty of humour and loveable characters.. I can't wait for the next book!
This is so much fun to read, teachers and parents will grin as they read it aloud to captivated children. This would make a fantastic TV series. A total joy to read.
After reading the previous ones my son jumped up and down when he got this one in his hands.
Again a magical story with great characters, that got my kids hooked from beginning to end.
The cover is an absolute work of art. I will have to get a copy for the shelves.
I’ve read the previous two books in this series already and I absolutely adored them. Nine and her housemates are just the most wonderful, characters, who warm your heart and soul.
In this third instalment, Nine continues to try to discover her past, and we get closure on a few things from the previous book.
This book is everything you need and more. Honestly, it’s just a big warm comforting hug of a book. I love it!
My thanks to Netgalley. My review is based on an advance copy that I received from the publisher. All views are my own!
I fell in love with the gorgeous and colourful cover and fell in love with the story, brilliant and colourful.
A well plotted, riveting and entertaining story that made me smile and kept me hooked. Great world building and character development.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
I love this series and this book was as chaotic, funny and magical as the others! Together with their friends, Nine, Wizard Flabberghast, and Eric travel to the Back of Beyond to find Professor Dish. But as ever, it's not as simple as it seems, and mayhem and magic ensue! This is a well-written, fun series for children of all ages that I highly recommend.
I had not read any of the other books in the series however I got enough of the back story to understand how all of the characters were together. I did find that there was spacing issues with the editing of the ebook however this did not impede my enjoyment of the story. I loved Nine and all of her friends and how so is trying to find out the circumstances of her disappearance. This is written in easy to read language and amazing told story for all ages to enjoy
The new year is bringing with it a LOT of great new book releases and we highly recommend that you kick off 2023 with a magical dose of fabulousness. The Bookshop At The Back of Beyond is the third instalment in The House At The Edge of Magic series and possibly my favourite yet. But - spoiler alert! - although I was assuming this was a trilogy, making this the epic finale, it looks like things are not quite over ...
After curing the House of hiccups, Nine and her friends are off to Beyond to help Spoon find Professor Dish. But when they encounter Flabberghast's formidable aunt Ophidia AND his dangerous sister, they become embroiled in a magical game of cat and mouse. Will they manage to escape Beyond unscathed, will Nine ever find out what happened to her mother and what is Flabberghast's sister really after?
Whereas the previous two books have focussed mainly on Amy Sparkes' magical and delightful House, this instalment takes the characters beyond the front door on a different mission - to find Spoon's partner in alchemy, Professor Dish. Both the plot and the world-building are richly imagined. Beyond is a fantastical, quirky and atmospheric setting whilst the characters remain absurdly loveable, endearing and downright funny with their razor-sharp banter and hilarious antics.
Nine remains a great main character in a story that still reminds me of a magical Oliver Twist. Although her patience is wearing thin and her frustrations simmer near the surface in this book, you find yourself rooting for her as she inches closer to uncovering her mother's secrets. I also particularly loved her inner battle with trusting others, telling the truth and her old habits of stealing despite having found where she belongs.
So if you're after a story that's wonderfully chaotic, full of magical mayhem but bound together by love and friendship, this is the book for you. Flabberghast's sister also makes the best, most complex and sassiest love-to-hate baddie I've read in a long time, making it pretty spectacular on every level.
This is the third book in this magical middle grade series and I enjoyed this one as much as the others. Nine is back and joined by the child wizard, Flaberghast, and the entire menagerie of odd and unique characters who live with them in the house at the edge of magic.
This time, Nine and the others are in the magical town of Beyond, where they need to buy wonderful and strange objects and escape the wrath of Flaberghast's Aunt. Nine is hiding a guilty secret as she tries to free her friends.
This world is always a delight to enter. The characters are bizarre yet truly believable and I'm enjoying seeing how the character of Nine develops as she goes through the books. Once more, there is warm humour on each page and touches of the strange that make this a wonderful world.
This is a fantastic book to share with children a series they'll love to read for emerging readers. As a teacher, I'd love to have this as a class read.
Thankyou so much to the publishers and Netgalley for providing me with an arc in return for an honest review.
Nine is off on another adventure with the inhabitants of her magical house. This fun, fast-paced and imaginative adventure takes her to Beyond, in search of missing, presumed captured, Professor Dish on the insistence of Doctor Spoon. But while Nine is there, she's compelled to discover secrets left by her mother. But while power-hungry Aunt Ophidia is determined to get the secret formula that Dish and Spoon have been working on, the rest of the House want to get away before she catches up with them, but the whole magical house is trapped until the mysterious bookshop opens!
The skillful writing is exuberant, exciting and addictive. The characters and the world leap off the page. This is so much fun to read, teachers and parents will grin as they read it aloud to captivated children. This would make a fantastic TV series. A total joy to read. For fans for The Magic Faraway Tree who want a modern and exceptionally well written adventure. Loved it!
This is the third in this fabulous series and it does not disappoint. The inhabitants of the house are quirky and usually lovable and they are still trying to make everything better, but facing a lot of stiff opposition. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Ever Wondered what it would Be Like to go into a Bookshop Beyond your Wildest Dreams? This Book Answers that Question & Then Some!
(Thanks to Net Galley & Amy Sparkes for this Book).
