Well I feel duped by the title and blurb. Nothing suggests the actual plot anywhere on the front or back of the book, if anything I feel I've been lied to. The last passenger?? No, No, theres 3 other MCs and I didnt really care for any of them.
I dont want to go into the story as its obviously the authors intention to keep you in the dark, so I will too, but the whole idea of the story was farfetched and unrealisic. I want my thrillers to thrill me, and this did not. Deans other book The Last Thing To Burn, is one of my all time favourite books and I'm confused how this is by the same writer. I will move on quickly from this book, nothing rreally appealed to me and I've been left throughly disappointed.
Overall 3,75 * as there are a few plot holes.
This is a fast-paced, engaging, roller coaster of a ride thriller. Reading this without too much knowledge from reviews is probably best. There are some really good twists and turns and it kept me turning the pages to find out what exactly would happen.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC to review.
Really enjoyed this! What a clever concept for a book. I did guess quite early on that it might be reality tv but had no.idea what the twists would be.....and that ending 😱
There was much to admire and enjoy in this book, but I think it was a case of personal taste, because I didn't quite click with it. I will read more from this author though.
This had great twists and turns - good for fans of the thriller genre, manages to do something unpredictable!
Love the premise of The Last Passenger, where a woman wakes up on a cruise ship to find herself alone. I guessed the setup correctly and was excited to see where it went. However, I found the execution a little lacking. The book could have gone into two different ways -- make the setup more believable and lean into a thrilling, dangerous adventure with exciting challenges; or go wild and lean into a survival horror where the stakes are high and choices matter. But the book falls in the middle, not committing to either path.
There's a little dystopian vibe here that should have made the situation even more threatening for the character, especially when she finds out who is making the decisions. I think I would have liked it more if the book had focused on the characters and the ramifications of their actions, rather than trying to be too clever with the setup. The final reveal at the end took me out of the story because it was just unbelievable. Overall, entertaining at times but a little too predictable and safe.
A different type of book from Will Dean...I did enjoy it and could imagine it becoming a film. There were some truly disturbing descriptions of images which will stay with me for a long time!
"The Last Passenger" by Will Dean is a heart-pounding thriller that plunges readers into a gripping mystery aboard the RMS Atlantica, a luxury cruise liner suddenly deserted in the mid-Atlantic, leaving only Caz Ripley and her boyfriend Pete behind. As Caz navigates the eerie emptiness of the ship, suspense mounts with each turn of the page. Dean's masterful storytelling keeps the tension high as Caz unravels the chilling secrets of the abandoned vessel. Praise from Ian Rankin and the Observer underscores the novel's thrilling pace and unexpected twists, promising readers a riveting ride from start to finish.
In “The Last Passenger”, author Will Dean takes readers on a gripping and eerie journey aboard the exclusive cruise liner RMS Atlantica. When Caz steps onboard the RMS Atlantica for a vacation of a lifetime with her new love, Pete, everything seems perfect. They explore the ship, dine, dance, and make friends. But when Caz wakes up the next morning, Pete is missing. To her horror, she discovers that the entire ship is empty—no passengers, no crew—just her. The Atlantica is steaming into the mid-Atlantic, and Caz is the sole person on board. As she grapples with this terrifying situation, the mystery deepens, and she faces unimaginable challenges.
The novel begins as a locked-room mystery then takes an unexpected turn, transitioning into a survival/gory horror tale. I wasn’t expecting this, but was entertained and intrigued.
If you haven't read Will Dean before, brace yourself for a disturbingly dark, twisty and suspenseful read.
Caz Ripley is taking some time away from running her cafe in a small unremarkable town to go on a cruise with her boyfriend. Events in her past have left her feeling distrustful of others and with a large debt to repay, but all she cares about is her family and her cafe.
When Caz awakes on board the ship on the first morning, everyone has vanished without a trace, and Caz is trapped aboard a ship she cannot control with no means of contacting the outside world.
The tension and jeopardy are palpable throughout, making this a gripping and compelling read.
It’s a long time since a book has riled me as much as this one has and if it were possible to give no stars then I would. When I began reading it thought it was great, definitely a 4 or maybe even a 5. Loved how it started, then liked it less and less but then around the 40% mark it became absolutely ludicrous and not at all like the blurb. It’s as if the author thought how can I explain all this and chose a cop out random solution. The characters were dreadful. There they were in a dire situation yet their greatest concern was getting the others to use their preferred version of their names! Plot holes galore, repetition all the time which packed out the book far too much. A huge thank you to the Goodreads reviewers who included spoilers which saved me from wasting anymore valuable time on this “novel”. Sad to say I will not be reading anything else by this author and will be giving him a very wide berth!
This book! While the storyline is far fetched, this book makes quite the thrilling read, Written in a really immersive way, I found myself pulled to keep reading, to discover what would happen next and had a few jaw dropping moments throughout. If you tend to find most thrillers have become predictable, this one is worth a look! The ending is something I did NOT see coming!
What a roller coaster ride! I’m just trying to catch my breath. Caz goes on a cruise with her “partner” thinking time together might give them the opportunity to get know one another better. But, she awakes next day to find the ship deserted - all other passengers appear to have left.
Don’t want to say more as they would be spoilers. Suffice to say I raced through this book.
Thanks to Netgalley for a digital copy of this book
Wow-immersive story. The evocative details and impeccable research make for a delightful reading experience.
The writing style is great and it's fantastically written. A wonderful story, beautifully told. I absolutely tore through it!
Wow! What a page turner!!! Set on a cruise ship travelling transatlantic, Smith, Caz, Frannie and Daniel find themselves marooned on a ship with no crew, no other passengers, no food and no water. Their only companions are the dogs in the kennels, who they feed and walk. After a day or two the discover they are the participants on a reality show aired on the dark web.
This book is absolutely gripping. from start to finish. It has left me wanting to know what happens next. If I could give it twn stars, I would.
Will Dean has been an automatic choice author for some years now, since I first read Dark Pines. If any author is going to write a tense thriller with multiple twists and turns it is Will Dean.
The Last Passenger was an unusual concept set on a cruise ship. I have never wanted to go on a cruise because they are normally too 'peopley'. The novel is a locked room thriller because it is set onboard a cruise ship far from land or a way of escaping. There were a few unlikeable characters amongst the ones that were left on the ship after everyone else disappeared, but that just adds to the atmosphere. I loved the surprise ending which had me physically gasp out loud! A well-written, well-executed thriller that might put you off a cruise forever!
I honestly don’t know what I expected from this book but it wasn’t that. At first, I was a bit W T H, how is that even possible.
But then tried to take out the realm of the possible and roll with it.
I actually really enjoyed it, it kept me curious and on my toes. I never felt like I could guess what was coming next.
It was a truly interesting concept.
I already knew that based on the novelty of it and the way it played out, that the ending was going to be hard to land. Because how do you tie off a book like this?
I felt in this respect, I was right. It wasn’t awful but it was a bit like REALLY?! I think it was an impossible task though and I’d have felt like that about the ending whatever it was.
Caz is on a luxury cruise with her boyfriend. When she wakes up on the first morning and everyone has disappeared she begins to search the ship. A very unusual story, reminded me of The Hunger Games. A good psychological thriller
I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this book from NetGalley.
The first thing to say is, do not read this book if you're about to go on a cruise!
This is a thrilling page turner which has you wracking your brains trying to figure out what is going on. And the last page......Wow!
I have enjoyed Will Deans previous books but found it difficult to get into this one.
The plot was great, full of tension and the small cast of characters made it easy to get into but the implausibility of it all made it difficult for me to enjoy
