Thanks Netgalley for the ARC.
Wow what can I say. I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive about this as I was in the minority that wasn't that blown away by The Last Thing to Burn but wow.
I read this in two sittings and there's no exaggeration saying gripping page turner.
Caz Ripley lives in Yorkshire and has a normal life with her family and is running a little cafe. Sure she has past trauma's but she is happy with her life for the most part. Finally finding happiness with new partner Pete when he suggests a cruise on a luxury liner. Caz is a bit unsure but puts her trust in him and agrees to the trip. After a magical first night on board Caz wakes to find Pete gone and on further inspection everyone else on the ship! Finding herself alone and the ship seemingly powering on on it's journey Caz must find out what happened to the rest of the passengers and crew and how she can survive.
I can't add much more without spoilers but the twist was one I would never have guessed and glad I didn't read it on any reviews as it was something I would never have thought of. I literally couldn't put this down and the end of the last chapter was brilliant.
Massively recommended.
Oh this is a tricky one to review and rate! It was certainly gripping and I read on because I needed to know what on earth was going on- but I found the whole premise very hard to believe and somewhat unconvincing, and I never quite managed to shake that off. Clever, tense, downright uncomfortable at times, but it required just a bit too much of a suspension of disbelief than I could manage. And, as others have mentioned, that last page shocker…
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC- and I will be checking out the author’s other books!
This book launched into the tension very quickly and kept it up throughout with twists and turns. There were a lot of holes in the plot which did detract a little and I really didn't like the ending but overall was an enjoyable read.
This is hard to review as I really didn’t enjoy it. I did actually dnf so I still don’t know what happens throughout the book but I found the storyline too unbelievable. For massively thriller lovers though I think this might go down very well. Unfortunately didn’t come anywhere close to this author previous book
The Last One had me riveted from the first page. I mean, what must be going on in the mind of Will Dean that makes him write like this? I’ve asked the same question many times before of Stephen King, and I could see him writing something along these lines 30 years ago: a woman wakes up on a cruise ship that holds over 1000 people - and they’re all gone. Every single one of them. Where could they be? The boat is out at sea - surely the boat can’t have been evacuated and she’s just left there alone?
And it just gets stranger and stranger. There were times that I really didn’t want to read on. I hated Will Dean for writing certain things - how could he even think them?! 🤭 Genius. It made me feel supremely uncomfortable, angry, SO ANGRY, frustrated, and a bit sad, too.
I can’t/ won’t say any more about the plot. To say anything at all would be to give it away - and the reveal is EVERYTHING!
This is one of those books that I’ll be thrusting into peoples hands saying: “Read this, now! It’ll drive you MAD, but you’ll love it!!”
Thriller, mystery and adrenalin rush all rolled into one. The kind of book to pack for your holidays. At once undemanding and compelling.
A startling nível with bluff and counterbluff. Clever and twisty and very good at creating anxiety within the reader. I felt the end was a bit predictable once we'd been through the ringer and a bit of a let-down.
Amazing, gripping horror story. Loved the idea of it in a book, in reality I’m terrified. Will Dean expertly takes us on a voyage along with Caroline as she finds she is the last passenger. A real edge of your seat read.
Incredible, this was a mind blowing read. I don’t want to give anything away, simply read and see for yourself. 5 amazing stars
This book is a blend of the horror/survival/thriller genre and to be fair, I am not mad at all about the turn it took, although I probably would've still wanted something else for it. The ending though.. I dunno, after it seemed too silly to trust just like that.
I read it in 2 days, so that must mean something!
Caz and her new boa Pete are going away for a bit of luxury, booked onto the cruise liner The Atlantica. Caz feels a bit guilty leaving behind her job, family/mums care even for just a few days but her and Pete are getting to know each other and she deserves a wee bit of time away. However after the first night of fabulousness and being spoiled she goes to sleep and awakes to find the ship completely abandoned. No guests, no staff and no clue as to what happened. The ship is in the mid-Atlantic ocean, surrounded by water/elements and silence. How will Caz survive and can she find out what happened to the rest of her crewmates/staff and Pete?
I LOVED the start of this book and how we are teased into the dramas/shocks and surprises. I mean you immediately think well you are just needing to sit it out and wait for help, you have electricity, food and luxury at your disposal and yet as the layers of the story are revealed we find just how horrific things are and are to become for poor Caz.
For me the book is a mixed bag, what I liked I really liked and what I disliked I really disliked. It is hard to go into it without risking spoilers which we never do. The book bounces between current day on the ship and the survival that is endured and going back into Caz's past and her reflections on her father and the huge impact his betrayal/choices have had on her.
Tense, atmospheric, shocking the book certainly has you turning the pages wanting to see what is coming next. The characters I didn't like for the most past, in fact the majority I wasn't a fan of but unlikeable characters can make for a great book. 3/5 for me this time, I love a story of abandoned places/spooky/weird and this book has a bit of all of that with some curve balls along the way.
I’ve now read everything that Will Dean has written and after each book I’m always of the opinion that ‘this has been the best one yet’!
Five stars doesn’t even begin to cover just how brilliant ‘The Last Passenger’ is.
It will be virtually impossible to review this book without giving anything away. So I’ll whittle it down to great characters; brilliant setting; crazy twists and turns and perfect pacing.
Can this man even write a mediocre book?!
Thankfully not!
I have read all the other Will Dean books
and have enjoyed them all so much. I couldn’t quite get to grips with this one and I’m not quite sure why. Will give it another go at a later date.
The Last Passenger is a fast-paced, entertaining read with an intriguing premise: Caz is on holiday with her partner on a luxury cruise liner when one morning, she wakes up and everyone else on the ship – including her partner Pete and all the Crew – has disappeared!
That in itself is likely to be enough to draw you in – what could the explanation possibly be for their disappearance? It’s very hard to give much information about this book without spoilers, but in its simplest form Caz soon learns that things are not as they seem, and it’s certainly no accident…
The Last Passenger does a great job of really playing into your fears – it certainly had me thinking about how I’d react if I was in Caz’s place, and it was not a nice thought! It starts off a little slower but soon ramps up in terms of action and tension. There’s some surprises and some elements that require some suspension of disbelief, but it’s so much fun and Will Dean writes so engagingly that the plot just seems to flow brilliantly.
And that ending…!
Really enjoyed this book, I didn't find it as good as his others but still a very good read. If you have enjoyed other books by him I highly recommend giving this book a go
Thank you for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book. This is an amazingly well written book. It is incredibly creepy and intense
I absolutely loved this book. It had me gripped from the start and kept me guessing until the very end. Would definitely recommend.
A page turner which keeps ramping up the tension and had me guessing where the story would head to next. I don’t want to say too much on the storyline as it would spoil any future readers enjoyment.
Sure you have to leave credibility to one side but it’s one hell of a read and makes some important points.
I was lucky enough to receive a physical and E ARC of this one and posted my full review to Instagram but honestly if you need to know one thing about this book.. it's that you need to read it!
So creepy, had me on the edge the whole time I was reading and I couldn't put it down!
Fantastic read from this author!
Another terrific stand-alone psychological thriller by Will Dean. Dean is a master at weaving twists and turns into his books, they never fail to have you sitting in the edge of your seat wondering where the story is going next. I spent most of the time reading this trying to work out how it was going to end. The pace is fast, with short chapters that will have you turning pages in record time.
Car was going on an ocean cruise with her boyfriend Pete, they had been on 13 dates, I’m even now wondering if that was significant. Cat has never left the UK and it takes everything for Pete to get her to go on this holiday. Everyone boards the ocean liner, when Caz sees their room she is gobsmacked, she feels Pete has paid too much but he assures her he got it at a good rate. They spend time looking around the liner, then go for dinner, then Pete says he has a surprise for Caz, her sister had said she thought he was going to propose. But when Pete opens the doors to a casino Caz panics she needs to leave that room immediately, Pete goes with her request surprised at her reaction. Caz has a secret she hasn’t told Pete, what is her secret? They both go to sleep early that evening and when she wakes Caz finds she is alone in the cabin, but as she explores it seems it’s not just in the cabin, the whole ship is empty. Where has everyone gone? Where is Pete?
The characters have real depth they are believable, likeable. With non stop action, razor sharp tension that will have you totally engrossed. Without giving too much else away from the story, Will Dean does tackle some dark themes. How far could you be pushed to do something you really don’t want to do but it may save another’s life, your own life, provide you with food when you have nothing. You know everything you do is being watched, your fear, feelings, are being shown to others as entertainment. Voyeurism, the more people watch the more extreme the challenges.
We have all watched one reality show or another but what if someone put you in the middle of one without our consent? How would you feel?
I found myself wondering how I would react. Can Caz outwit everyone else?
