So the BackUp Plan is the third book of the Sunrise Cove series. I have to be honest, I think this is my favourite book in the series so far. As always you do not need to read the previous books to enjoy this one.
I quickly fell in love in Lauren, Knox and Alice and watching them come together to fix the Last Chance Inn that they have inherited from Elenor, a women that they all are connected to, in order to cash in on their inheritance. Alice and Lauren were childhood friends until they fell out, and Alice had a crush on Knox. But then Alice left town. Now she is back for a short a time as possible.
But as time goes on and the group comes more together, their friendships build and suddenly leaving becomes a whole lot harder than they all originally thought. Lauren and Alice have a second chance to become best friends. All have the chance to find love, friendship and what home actually mean to each of them.
The Backup Plan will have you laughing out loud one moment and in tears the next. While this story is new there is something comforting and familiar in picking up a Jill Shavlis book.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers and of course the author for gifting me this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Backup plan is the 3rd installment of the Sunrise Cove series and it did not disappoint.
I loved the character building of Lauren, Knox and Alex and found them to be very relatable. They were all brought together after the death of Eleanor, who left property split between the three main characters. Their lives now ever more entwined, past and present issues need to be dealt with and they need to get over some road bumps to be able to help each other, and ended up needing each other equally in the end.
This book had me laughing and crying in equal parts and it was great that there was not just one romance but two.
I look forward to reading more books by this author.
I’m so excited to be part of the blog tour for this amazing new book from @jillshalvis
I adored this one. This is only my 2nd or 3rd book from Jill so far and I’ve never been disappointed yet. She manages to make every book feel so different and unique but still with this same cozy heartwarming vibe running throughout them which is my favourite thing!
I loved the romance in this one so much but I also really enjoyed that we also got a female friendship that took up a part of the story as well. It was really interesting learning about why the friendship broke up and seeing the 2 female leads work to get it back.
If you love Sarah Morgan’s books, I really think you’d love this (or any from Jill)
I loved The Backup Plan, it’s such a perfect book to read in these wintery months too, it’s got such a great setting for the weather right now!! ✨

This book hit me with every feeling. I laughed. I cried. I blushed. The atmosphere seeped through every page, from the first page until the end.
All in all I thought this was a fantastic read. The only reason this didn’t get a five stars from me was that some parts fell a little bit too quick to resolve and the plot was a little bit predictable at points. I eventually loved the characters, but it took a while until this happened. I also did not realise that this is book three in a series which did surprise me when I looked it up. That being said, it reads very well as a stand alone and if I hadn’t have looked on good reads I genuinely would not have realised that this is part of a series.
This was a solid romance and definitely one that I will recommend. Am I likely to go back and read the previous two books? Probably. I’m certainly very interested to read more from this author as it’s the first time I’ve read something of hers I really liked the characters and the atmosphere that she’s able to create. I laughed so hard at so many things including finding an elderly woman’s vibrator in her purse that had all three characters mortified, and I generally do now want to find out a bit more about this community in particular. So it is likely that I will give it a go in the future. Maybe not necessarily right now but definitely at some point I would like to read more from this author.
A return to Sunrise Cove with a powerful, moving story. Thanks to a great author we have warmth, wisdom and emotional intelligence, this book was a huge pleasure to read!
Alice is left a part share in a b&b along with her best friend Lauren and Knox that she had a crush on in high school. It's in a terrible state so they have to fix it up before they can decide what to do with it.
When Alice learns that she has inherited the B&B she once called home, she never expected to arrive, finding two other beneficiaries. Her ex best friend Lauren, and Knox, the only man to ever break her heart. Now the three must collectively renovate the B&B together or risk losing their inheritance. So, they make a list of rules to stick to while working together, and while repairing the property they may be repairing friendships along the way.
A quick paced, moving novel about friendship and trust.

The Back Up Plan is another absolutely wonderful read which has been a book I have fallen completely in love with from the very beginning.
This is a book which is filled with brilliant characters. Each the reader can enjoy the journey through this book with. I have devoured page after page of this one in just one sitting.
Alice is gorgeous and a character that makes this a fantastic read. Lauren and Knox really add another dimension to this as well.
The Back Up Plan is full of friendship, love and acceptance. I have devoured this book with no regrets.
Reading a Shalvis book is like a big hug and the comfort that I’ve needed. I have loved everything about this book from beginning to end. Shalvis is a go to author for heartwarming and humour filled reads.
I’ve read many books by Shalvis and I have to say they keep getting better and better. I can’t possibly choose a favourite because they are all brilliant.
If you haven’t read any of Jill’s books, I absolutely recommend them. You will definitely be in for a big treat.
A book worthy of all the stars.
This was a lovely, feel-good but also real and honest read. I appreciated the depth of the characters and the history they had, which made me invested in shared journey.
I'd really been looking forward to this book, and it certainly lived up to my expectations with the usual funny, snarky, romantic story we always get with a Jill Shalvis book, my go-to author, guaranteed to get me out of any reading slump!
I loved all three main characters - Alice, Knox and Lauren - who are unexpectedly left an old Wild West B&B by someone they all knew when they were younger. Each character has their own family issues to sort through, and dragging them all back to the B&B to work on the renovations helps them work through things and come out the other side much happier. Their 'to-do' list written on the wall was very funny!
Loved it - a real feel good book!
Unfortunately, this one felt slow and slogging for me. There also didn't seem to be any chemistry between any of the characters (let alone the love interests), and it felt more 'told' than 'shown' throughout. It just lacked that spark and warmth older Jill Shalvis books have and that I totally adore. This story felt like it was written just to give a story happening to 3 people, but I didn't feel the 3 people living this story and even their lives. Shame, because this author used to be an instant buy for me exactly because of the lived-in factor she brought to her characters
This was such an enjoyable read, with the perfect balance between emotional, cathartic moments and light-hearted humor. The witty yet caring interactions between the three main characters, Alice, Lauren, and Knox, was a real highlight of this book for me; you could really feel them bonding as their relationships developed.
It was definitely a very character-driven book; I’m usually more of a plot-driven reader, and perhaps a bit more development in this area would have enhanced this book for me personally as there was nothing substantial besides the inn being renovated. For example going beyond the renovation and seeing the inn up and running with various guests staying.
However, I found myself to be really enjoying the character focus, particularly because I took to each of the main characters well and they each felt so genuine. There’s a sense of authenticity which immerses you in their story and had me finishing this in a matter of days.
I quite liked how Eleanor (and the inn overall) was used as a plot device to bring the characters together to work through their problems and interwoven pasts. This could have come across as cliche but it was done in a self-aware way that played off of Eleanor’s supposedly ‘strings-pulling’ nature, so it actually worked well.
Overall, it was a great insight into friendships, working on yourself and your insecurities, and not letting your past hold you back.
Thank you to Headline Eternal for the gifted copy (and NetGalley for the e-ARC) as part of the blog tour!
This was a lovely, quick moving, enchanting read. There’s a little something for everyone in this book. The three main characters became to feel like people I know.
I loved this book. Years ago all three of them helped out Eleanor in their own way and now the “friends” have inherited her Inn between them. Although none of them have kept in contact they have to come back and live there together in order to meet the requirements of the will.
Alice ran away years ago after losing her brother Will..
Lauren, who was Alice’s best friend and also was dating Will, still lives in the town.
Knox, who Alice had a crush on years ago and also lives away.
Will they be able to put apart their differences and get the Inn ready to reopen in time or will one of them give up? Can they trust each other again?
Jill Shalvis does it again! I loved this. The combo of friendship between Alice and Lauren and relationship with Alice and Knox, with the added benefit of Eleanor's letters plus the trauma, had me laughing and crying and loving every second of this book. Perfect, perfect, perfect! Roll on book 4 😍
Loved this book! The story was well-written and moved at a good pace. The three main characters (Lauren, Alice and Knox) are well-rounded and likeable. I defiantly will go back to this series to see how they all move along in their stories.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'The Backup Plan' by Jill Shalvis.
Read and reviewed for Jill Shalvis, NetGalley and Headline Publishers.
Publication date 17th January 2023..
This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the third book in 'The Sunrise Cove' series but can be read as a standalone.
I was originally drawn to this book by its intriguing cover and its hilarious sounding synopsis and title. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Headline Books. I have yet to read a book published by Headline Books that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of 26 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in the USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Alice Moore, Lauren Scott and Knox Rawlings. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
What an absolutely fantastic laugh a minute, heart warming, stunning must read!!! Absolutely loved it fairplay!!! This book has fantastic descriptions that set you straight in the scenes. The cover, title and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.
The storyline itself was absolutely unputdownable so make sure you clear your schedules before starting to read it!!
OMG!!! I absolutely love, LOVE, LOVED this absolutely gorgeous book!!! I must say it has got to be one of the best romances I have ever read!! I loved the storyline of three people who were so close in the past but have not spoken to each other for so long being forced together for a month and seeing what happens!! It is absolutely rammed full of romance, friendship, arguments, regrets, secrets, love and just absolutely everything you could want in a page turner and so, so much more!!! I absolutely adored that it is filled with lists that get added to and edited throughout making me laugh each time!! I was absolutely absorbed in this book and just could not put it down!!! There was no chance of just one more chapter and I ended up devouring it in a day!!! I cannot wait to get the first two books in the series 'The Family You Make' and 'The Friendship Pact' and just any book I can get hold of by this extremely talented author!! The setting and atmosphere was absolutely gorgeous and I loved watching the Inn getting redeveloped, learning everyone's stories and histories and watching the characters relationships change throughout. It really is one of those feel good books that is perfect to read curled up in front of a fire or lying on the beach. There was a perfect mix of tragedy, heartbreak, Romance, laughter that it definitely the go to book if you want a pick me up!! Watching the Inn transform was a magical experience and I really hope Jill continues with this series as it is one of those I don't think I could ever get bored with!! It is so much more than your everyday romance with the intriguing and multi layered storylines as there is more than just the one. I could go on and on but seriously just get your copy and get sucked in. Your really won't regret it!!
Although this is the third book in the series I had would have had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but also any characters that may make repeat appearances during the series too.
An absolutely stunning, page turning MUST READ!!
The characters were all an eclectic mix and each one of them were realistic and strong. I absolutely fell in love with the three of them for different reasons and I was absolutely devastated to say goodbye. I absolutely adored watching their relationships and friendships grow and develop throughout the storyline. They each became stronger and learnt so muchnot only about each other but about themselves. I adored the fact that each one of them helped the others out during their bad times even from the beginning when they didn't get along and couldn't wait to get away from each other. Jill made them leap out of the pages and I genuinely wanted to grab them and keep them out. I really hope to meet them all again so please, please, please bring out more books in this series Jill!!! I cannot wait to get stuck in to the previous books and I hope they are in them also. I'm fact I think I'll end up crying if they are not!! Their personalities are fantastic and I don't want to go in to too much detail as I don't want to spoil or for future readers by telling them too much. However some of the things I loved about them were Lauren being vegan (most of the time anyway 😂) as I'm vegan myself, Alice's sympathy crying, Lauren working in a library, Knox being so compassionate and caring, and so, so much more!! These characters, well most of them, were one of the best group of people I've ever 'met' and they will stay with me for a long time!!
A MASSIVE WELL DONE to Jill on a HUGE success!!! I loved every page of your book and I cannot wait to read more past and future amazing books. Welcome to my top 3 romance author list!! Here's to your next success 🥂!

A great read, the stories of Lauran, Knox and Alice as they are thrown back together when they inherit an Inn in their old home town. They were bought together for a reason, so what will happen for them all now? I liked how it was told from the different points of view.
Loved this story of 3 estranged friends brought back together after the death of a an inn owner, Eleanor. As they work together to restore the Inn, Alice, Lauren and Knox find themselves repairing friendships and finding love. The Backup Plan is funny, heartwarming, and the pefect blend of women's fiction and steamy romance.
I hadn’t actually realised that this book was part of a series until I popped over to Amazon to post my review, it turns out that this is book 3 in the Sunrise Cove following The Family you Make and The Friendship Pact - two books that have now added themselves to my list! The fourth book, The Sweetheart List will be released in June so plenty of time to read the others before that!
From a quick look they all follow a different set of characters but are based in the same location, meaning that you could start this series with any book. Jill provides you with the characters’ back stories as you progress through the book so you don’t feel like you’re missing any details.
As soon as I started reading this I could feel that it was going to be a good book, it’s set in an old lodge that had been used as the base for a Wild West tv show so you could easily conjure up images of what it may look like.
The characters were the be all and end all of this book but I think they’ll stay with me for a while, 3 really strong individuals (not that they all know it at the start) who are forced together to reach a common goal. There are more than a couple of hiccups along the way but I also found myself chuckling along to some parts - cue mother goose, and Jill’s even thrown in a couple of spicy moments which I wasn’t expecting.
I’m so glad I bumped this book up my list as I think I’ve found another favourite author and I’ll definitely be reading more of her books in the future!! Thank you again to Isabelle at Headline Fiction for the chance of being on the tour and for the Netgalley copy!
