I really liked the first book in this series but after reading this my enjoyment has waned and most probably will not be continuing on with the series.
I liked that Max was centre stage but for me he wasn't strong enough as a character and they seem to find some sort of trouble at a drop of the hat. As for the teacher really put me off the story they were written to heavily handed.
For all the above reasons The Mystery in the Marshes receives 3 stars.
This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher for the copy. What a fantastic book! The author has a great gift for characterisation - nuanced, interesting, believable people! Thanks to a great author we have warmth, wisdom and emotional intelligence, this book was a huge pleasure to read!
It's been so long since I read middle grade fiction full of adventure, mystery, and solving criminal case. It gave me secret seven vibes. The characters were all stand out and easily distinguishable by their traits. The book started with a road bike camping that made them stumbled into unexpected adventure.
I love the camaraderie and the illustration. This is super enjoyable on how the children try to find a way to escape or solve the mystery.
It was nice but nothing sort of very fantastical.
If you're into adventure and found family solving mystery, give this book a go. You don't have to read the other two books. Feel fry to try💕
I had no idea that the author writes children fiction and had to do a double take on that because I love his thrillers and this was exciting to start reading with my daughter.
We both loved it so much, so well written and great adventures overall. It was build just like a detective case and the puzzles pieces were great to discover.
We’ll be reading more in the near future for sure.
Like other reviewers, I hadn't read the first two books in the series but this did not detract from my enjoyment or understanding of this story. I read this adventure in one sitting and thought it was brilliant. The characters were realistic, engaging and represented the dynamics you would find in a real group of children. Add in the mysterious lights, a kidnapping, a grumpy teacher and a tenacious dog and you've got yourself an entertaining and engaging children's book that would be perfect to read out loud at story time.
I'll definitely be looking out for the next book and the two preceding ones.
A really fun and fast-paced novel, with a beautiful friendship in the middle of it. I hadn’t read the first two books in the series, but it didn’t take away from my reading experience at all. I enjoyed this so much and flew through it. The characters are all so fleshed out and real, and the plot was so intense. I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next! And the illustrations were incredible and added so much to the reading experience.
I’d urge you to read this book, and this series, when it comes out, you won’t regret it!
While this is part of a series it is entirely possible to read all of these stories in any order. I loved the characters and especially Sherlock the dog.
This is the third in the series featuring the quirky bunch of crime fighters. This time they are on a school outward bound activity and managed to get caught up in possible spying plot near a US air base in England. The story is full of adventure, with twists and turns that leave you wondering who can be trusted. A great read for the middle grade.
This was a fun, mystery story with vibrant characters and illustrations. Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read thisARC.
We raced through this book at the weekend. I loved the fact that it was in the same vein as the adventure stories I read as a child but these are much more modern. Lots of excitement and action to keep all of the children interested, roll on the next installment.
I received a free copy of, The After-School Detective Club: The Mysteries in the Marshes, by Mark Dawson, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I wish I had something like this when I was in school. Such a cool group of friends. Max and his friends have a mystery to solve. Their friend Byron needs help, can they figure out the mystery before its too late. I really enjoyed this book and its illustrations.
My 7 year old daughter requested this book as she had read another one in the series.
She has found it very easy to read, completing it almost in one sitting! The characters are wonderful, especially Max, who is very funny 😁
She loved the suspense when Max was chased by what he thought was a UFO!
She will definitely read more in the series
This entire series is set in Suffolk, my own stomping grounds and it truly changes the dynamic of the story for the reader to be transported to familiar landscapes, towns and scenery.
This is the third Afterschool Detective Club book and they are all amazing. Lucy, Joe, Max and Charlie are all so different, in their personalities, strengths and demeanours, but they have somehow formed a solid friendship and club . They first broke a smuggling ring, then found some ancient treasure and now they are foiling an international spy ring.
Taking on the Duke of Wellington challenge of camping and adventuring for 4 days, the club have planned their route and campsites and just need to follow their plan to the minute or creepy old Mr Finnegan will fail them, and quite happily too! He has a real dislike for Max and his friends.
When the group meets Byron, there is some friction due to his rudeness and boastfulness, but Sherlock takes an instant liking to him and Charlie always says he is a good judge of people. On their second night of camping, Max sees Byron running from home screaming that he was being chased. The group travel to his home and immediately know something is wrong.
Spying themselves, they soon learn the truth and are suddenly caught up in a dangerous circle with 3 people not afraid to do them harm.
Their last night camping turns into a race for safety and help. Loyalties will be proven and a huge rescue mission deployed.
Exciting, adventurous and heartwarming….this group of kids is spirited, determined and loyal to their friends.
I have also had a very sneak peek at book 4! It too, looks amazing! Keep them coming, I say
