I always enjoy a 'Sliding Doors'-style story but I definitely expected more from this one.
It just lacked something and especially when I compare it to a similar book, one by Taylor Jenkins Reid, this one just wasn't of the same standard, unfortunately.
The relationships felt somewhat unbelievable to me, particularly when it came to how quickly they fell for one another.
While I do like a shift in timelines, sometimes the changes from one to the other were so quick or similar that it was hard to keep track of.
Where this book did shine was with the side characters. They were so much more interesting that the protagonist or her love interests.
Laura Jane Williams' books seem to be pretty hit or miss for me, but I'd still look forward to reading more from her in the future because when one of her books is a hit for me, it's one that I really love.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have really enjoyed Laura Jane William's books in the past so was excited to read this one.
However, i really struggled with this book.
I just couldn't get into it! The 'sliding doors' theme is something I LOVE and I'm always thinking about it in my own life, but even that didn't 'save' the book for me. I wasn't cheering for the protagonist, and i certainly wasn't cheering on the relationships - that felt very problematic at times.
It didn't feel romantic for me, I was left thinking... 'really?!?!'
If Becca was my friend, I would have some serious words for her.
If you haven't read a Laura Jane Williams book before - please don't start with this one - her others are so much better! I have given her previous books 5*, and this one just 2*.
Praying that Willams next book is a return to her usual form.
Thank you to NetGalley for a e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
So this is my second or third Laura Jane Williams book and I have to say they get better the more I read, as in each book is better than the last. I bloody loved this.
The writing is amazing and there are SO many cute quotes, I cannot wait to get a physical copy of this book when it comes out to Annotate the hell out of it.
We are following Becca as she makes decisions that effect her future in a split timeline. One she meets author Noah in the other she has a second chance romance with her Ex Mike. While also showing her friendships with Jia Li and the AMAZING Carlos and her parental relationships too. Plus Becca is a hairdresser so I completely related and I wish I had her life and love.
A great romantic summer read.
Becca is looking for Mr Right, it`s told through two timelines, meeting up with her ex Mike after he sends her a message and another view of where she blocks his calls and meets Noah.
Love all the characters and the story flows easily between time lines which I don`t normally like but it was so easy to follow and I liked how they joined up in places.
A great book will definitely read more from this author.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC
I absolutely adored this multiple universe, dual timeline story and the take away that no matter what universe you’re in if it’s meant to be it will be. I really enjoyed seeing the path Becca’s life makes in the two timelines; the one where she texts back her ex and the one where she doesn’t. And then there are Becca’a best friends Jai Li and Carlos who have great banter and add a great dynamic friendship group, and their own storylines into mix.
“Lovestruck” is a fun “Sliding Doors” style story. The lead character Becca is a successful hairdresser with her own salon. While her career is going well, her love life is not. She is desperate to find the right man, settle down and start a family. In the hope that it will help, she organises a manifestation evening at the salon. Five minutes after the ceremony has finished, she gets a message from her ex. Does she text back in order to find out why he’s suddenly messaging her or does she ignore it and leave the past in the past? A tray of glasses nearby nearly crash or do crash and from that point on, the story splits and we see what happens with both actions.
I can’t say I was surprised by how the story ended up but there were twists along the way and, as I have already said, the book is a fun read. The characters are likeable and most of them felt realistic if a little stereotypical at times. This would make an excellent holiday read or is a good one for a bit of escapism.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
Lovestruck is a really entertaining split-timeline story akin to Sliding Doors: when Becca's ex boyfriend texts her out of the blue, her decision whether to reply or not has consequences that she could barely imagine. Which one is the right choice? I did really enjoy this!
i want to thanks Net galley but unfortunately this was not for me , maybe again it was the 3rd person POV that i don't like. hopefully the next one i better for me .
I had a lot of conflicting feelings about Becca. She frustrated me throughout the book for rushing into things and being clueless. Saying that I didn’t see the ending coming initially which definitely redeemed the book for me. Some of the dialogue made me cringe and some didn’t flow naturally but I liked the whole alternate universe take. It satisfied all the ‘what ifs’ I would have had.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
Becca who is a salon owner, has been on her own for a while, but now she’s ready to find love. She goes as far as to hold a manifestation ceremony so others know too.
After the party, she gets a text from her ex, should she reply or not, that’s the dilemma she’s now in.
Becca was a character that you could be friends with and she had a varied mix of friends and family.
It was hard to decide who Becca would choose out of the two love interests, and was not expecting the sudden change at the last minute.
I recommend this book.
I have loved Laura's other books and thought this one was great too - it was a really fun read and I loved the concept of two parallel timelines based on whether she texted him back or not.
I struggled a little with the formatting on my phone/kindle, but think it'll be easier to read again once my physical copy arrives.
A sliding door romance exploring the what ifs if she replies to a text. It was an okay read but I didn’t really hook me in and it was a pretty standard read.
The idea of the book really hooked me even though I don’t feel like this was 100% for me.
Lovestruck is a Sliding Doors-esque story, that follows the two possible romantic paths for main protagonist Becca. The dual timelines were skilfully interwoven with some clever crossovers which I found easy enough to follow, but I felt like neither held any real depth and therefore I wasn’t invested in either.
The supporting cast of friends and family were at times humorous, however, I didn’t find it to be filled with the laugh out loud funnies I have come to expect from Williams, and I was actually quite disappointed with Becca’s character. For a seemingly intelligent woman who’s got it together and running her own business, her quest for love came across as desperate.
It was an ok story but I was hoping for better.
Lovestruck has a great premise: Becca owns a hair salon and goes to a manifestation ceremony where she asks for Mr Right. Five minutes later, she receives a text from her ex that she thought was ‘the one’. Laura Jane Williams then explores how Becca’s love life develops if she texts Mike back and another scenario where she doesn’t text back and meets hot author Noah on that night out instead. The supporting characters of Jai Li, Carlos and Becca’s dad are all really enjoyable to read about and leave you wanting more. When challenges arise in both scenarios, it feels that these are very neatly tidied up in order for a quite predictable conclusion. Overall, this is an enjoyable, relatively easy read that is perfect for summer holidays.
Absolutely loved this, its a Sliding Doors romcom = what would happen if you answered a text from your ex? Or what if you didn't?
Becca Calloway has a great life, but would love to find her true love, settle down, get married and maybe have children.
Her ex=partner Mike moved to America to follow his dreams, but when she gets a text five years later saying he's thinking of her, should she reply or not? They didn't fall out after all, but should you re-start a relationship that's already ended once. If its good enough for Prince William and Kate, surely its worth a shot?
This smart and entertaining romcom follows Becca as she replies; and also in an alternative world where she doesnt reply and instead, meets author Noah, and starts a relationship with him. The two timelines are presented alongside each other, so you can bounce between the two - some factors are the same in both timelines, whilst others are obviously very different depending on which man she has met.
Lovestruck was great fun to read, Becca is a very real character, and her friendship group and parents are a joy to read about. I loved the concept of 'what might have been' and how it was explored here, Lovestruck is cleverly written and very easy to read.

Lovestruck introduces us to Becca Calloway, a salon owner who is on the hunt for Mr. Right. As she embarks on this journey looking for love, the story branches off into two and we get to follow two different relationships. Each timeline stems from one moment; what would happen if Becca replied to a text from her ex and what would happen if she ignored it?
If Becca replies to the text then the love she shared with her ex, Mike, is rekindled, and if she ignores the text then she meets Noah. Both paths come with their own highs and lows, and ultimately Becca does find her happily ever after. The 'Sliding Doors' concept is very interesting, and I really enjoyed how both stories would overlap and then split off again. There are unavoidable plot points that happen in both timelines and it was cool to see how Becca would handle each scenario depending on which timeline you're reading.
I genuinely found the format of this book interesting and it was different from my usual reads, but I didn't think the romance elements of the story were particularly believable. I also didn't like Becca that much, or the men she fell for, and so it was hard getting into either of the timelines.
Although this book wasn't for me, I'd still recommend Love Struck to others who are interested in this kind of theme as the overall story was an easy and light read.
Unfortunately I don't think this was for me. I loved the idea of one decision changing the course of your life. The split storylines I thought would be a fun twist. However, the storylines jumped around a bit too much for my liking. I also struggled to get into Williams writing style. Becca, our protagonist, seems very one-dimensional and difficult to like so I would be continuing the book. I DNF'd at 42% as I got to a point where I didn't care who she ended up with. I think this was also in part due to the romances in both timelines, with her ex Mike and new man on the scene Noah, moving way too quickly to be believable. There wasn't enough of a foundation there and Lovestruck was sorely missing sexual tension.
I really wanted to like this book, the synopsis sounded right up my street!
Unfortunately I couldn’t make it past the first 2 chapters, I’m extremely disappointed but I don’t necessarily think it was the authors fault at all, I just couldn’t get into the writing style and that’s more of a me problem than anything else!
Maybe I’m just not in the right mental headspace for this book as I have just finished a long dark book series.
I’ll definitely try and give it another go in the future though as I’d love to give it a proper chance like it deserves! :)
I liked this, but I didn't love it as much as I hoped. The story centres around Becca, a salon owner in Birmingham on the search for her soulmate. The story splits when Becca gets a text message from Mike, her ex boyfriend who moved to New York. From that point on, we see two threads of Becca's life - one where she texts Mike back, and one where she blocks his number.
I love the premise of the split timelines - the chance to see the course Becca's life took in each situation - where paths diverged and where they came back together, but I'm not sure it worked quite so well in practice. The chapters switched between the timelines quite quickly, and I found a couple of times that I couldn't recall which timeline something had happened in. I think the book could have benefited from slightly less regular timeline shifts.
The love story itself was cute, and I was very happy with the final romantic resolution! Both relationships (Mike and Noah) moved faster than I thought was believable, and added to my impression that Becca was really quite a one dimensional character. Despite being a successful business owner and having an active social life, her desire for love seemed to dominate her personality. The side characters were super lovable though, and as a whole the story was good. Carlos and Jia Li were awesome, and I'd pick up a sequel for more of them! Also Becca's parents!
Extra brownie points for being set in my home turf of Birmingham! It's an amazing, vibrant city and it doesn't get as much positive press as it deserves. I will say that the speech patterns in particular were excellent! I could hear these characters voices so clearly and will be recommending to all my Brummie romance readers!
Thanks to NetGalley, Random House and Laura Jane Williams for the chance to read an e-arc of this book in exchange for an independent review.
What if you host a 'Manifestation Ceremony' and ask the Universe for Mr. Right? What if five minutes later you get a text from an ex of five years? Should you put it down to fate, text back, and leave everything down to the Universe? Should you ignore the text and concentrate on moving forward with your life? What will the consequences of both be?....
A laugh out loud book, with funny, witty characters. A perfect summer read.
