a bittersweet story set around christmas, a story of loss and hope, of friendships and balance.
a lovely story of losing yourself and finding family and friendships
A beautiful heart-warming story, that seems to be a modern day twist of A Christmas Carol and Groundhog day in one. I love a good Christmas story and this did not disappoint.
Eva was the main character, and it was hard to follow her destructive ways, seeing what she was doing to those she loved, and wanting to give her a good shake. But also sympathising that it came from a place of grief and she needed to find herself again. It was a sad story but beautifully written. I loved it.
Thank you to netgalley, the publishers and author for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
A story set in a beautiful manor house in Cornwall, with a variety of friends celebrating Christmas together, and with a story a bit like Groundhog Day where the main character, Eva, keeps reliving Christmas Day, but in a variety of different bodies of the women at the party.
Eva has been on a mission to open her new shop, trying to forget about heartaches from a few years ago, to the detriment of her friendships and her relationship with her husband, the very tolerant James. Her health is suffering and she has completely lost the work-life balance, driving everyone in her life to the edge with her attitude.
I know Eva had been through a couple of tragedies on the same day, which is why she was the way she was but despite this I really couldn't warm to her character and found her very irritating a lot of the time, which detracted from the story for me.
Eventually she stopped hopping into different bodies when she realised exactly how everyone felt about her, and realised that everyone else had issues they were dealing with that she hadn't noticed, or didn't really care about as it was all about her, and made some changes to her life for the better. An enjoyable read that could really be read any time of the year, even though it was set over the Christmas period.
Groundhog dates meets A Christmas Carol
Eva was working all the hours to lunch her business, much to the neglect of everyone around her, including her husband James. Over Christmas, he insists she takes a break and enjoys time away at Penhallow on Bodmin Moor, in the middle of nowhere. Each morning, she wakes in the body of a different guest.
This is quite a heavy read, covering some dark periods in people's lives. It's quite different from the usual 'sweet' Christmas reads. Overall, I found it an enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed reading this debut book. It is a very emotional read but engaging too. It has themes of A Christmas Carol and Groundhog day but it is still interesting and unique. It's not the usual type of Christmas story.
This was a very good book and I am interested in reading more books by this Author.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.
Aside from that it’s pure escapism and I loved the characters, though sometimes I found them infuriating at times, but it all comes together and they’re well developed and their actions make sense as the story goes on.
I love a good Christmas book at any time of the year and this did not disappoint. Loved it. I adored Eve after a while of getting to know her but seeing yourself through other people's eyes is a whole new concept and one that I loved. There were some emotional issues that it brought up for me but they were dealt with beautifully and sympathetically. All in all an excellent book. Nice one Rachel Greenlaw, will be buying more of you.
Thank you to Netgalley for this book in exchange for a full and frank review.
Gloriously heartwarming and will stay with you long after closing the last page!
This book is wonderful, it's got all the feels and huge emotion, I loved how it's written its all about learning about yourself at a time which is supposedly full of family and cheer. Eve really spoke to me, I was drawn to her story she is a woman in pain and trying to hide that from everyone around her, pretending all is well.
I loved the tiniest hint of A Christmas Story with how Eve is shown how her life could be, it's definitely emotional and tugs the heartstrings. I was a wee bit teary in parts!!
This is a wonderful book, yes it's a Christmas story but there is so much more to it than glitter balls and gifts, amongst the holiday traditions and festivities there is a real emotional human story of loss and I defy anyone to read it and feel tearful by the end.
I've not this author's books before this, but I will certainly look out for more of her work now!
A solid and captivating story, a must-read!
This is a Christmas themed book, my favourite kind of fiction! This was a book that intrigued me, I started off really not liking our main character, Eva but she fascinated me which made me want to carry on. The book also faces some hard hitting issues that also keeps the reader interested. In the end it is a kind of A Christmas Carol meets Groundhog Day kind of vibe. Extremely well written and I look forward to seeing what the author produces next.
I loved this book. Not only is it set at Christmas which is my favourite time of the year but we also have the addition of the ghost of her Nan coming along to try and sort out her life before she looses everything. As someone who has lost both her Grandparents the absolute devastation and grief this woman felt seemed so real to me and I could see how that had consumed her. As her Nan helps her navigate her life and see clearly the choices she has been making and the damage they had caused it came together to a beautiful conclusion about love and friendship and how those we love never go away even if you can’t see them any more.
Shades of Dickens Christmas Carol, Eva is a woman who has put work before family and friends and is in danger of pushing them all away for good. A Christmas visit to a special house full of memories and her gran gives her the unique chance to experience the lives of those close to her and truly discover the impact of her choices. Really nicely done with great characters and a creative modern twist on a classic
First off I'd like to thank the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
After a slight issue with the writing (it was very light and dull struggled to see it), it resolved itself and I was able to read the book. The author has made this an easy read, the words working together seamlessly to form a beautiful piece of work. The story itself was enjoyable and kept me gripped from start to finish.
Happy reading.
A Christmas Carol meets Groundhog Day with trigger warnings that took me right out of the story. I think I perhaps anticipated the story to be something it wasn't and I can't take that away from my experience with this.
I absolutely devoured this book and when I usually love a time loop, especially at Christmas, this had a whole new spin when Eva has to relive Christmas but in the bodies of her friends.
This book offers a lesson and I found Eva to be a very relatable character in that I myself often shut people out when I'm struggling or grieving and I have definitely taken my friends for granted.
This book stays with you long after you've finished it.
Not your typical Christmas book, and all the better for it. Eva is forced to confront the person she has turned into by not dealing with her grief and from pushing those closest to her away. If only real life gave you the chance to do things again with hindsight!
A beautiful book, a Christmas book with heart that isn't sickly sweet.
When I received an email about this story, I was instantly attracted to the cover and the title of the story, upon reading the blurb, I was desperate to read something like this, something that’s unique and a little different to the stories that I read, and I can tell you with 100% honesty that Rachel did not disappoint.
Grief is something that is guaranteed in life, it’s something everyone is going to feel at one time or another, but it’s how we deal with that grief that separates us from one another, as for Eva, she focused on something she dreamed of and allowed it to consume her until it left her world tumbling down a rabbit hole, ready to fall apart at the seams on the day of Christmas morning…
The journey that you go through while reading this story is something unforgettable and you really do live in other peoples shoes as Eva. A lot of the things you read make you questions things yourself and allow you to connect in ways you didn’t think you could, in a way I feel that this story also helps you heal from certain things such as grief and heartbreak.
Focusing on Eva and her marriage, I was routing for them from the start and while I nearly cried multiple times, my heart began to heal itself, I see this story as something similar to a hallmark movie but it has a more realistic ending, one that will leave you content and happy.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and HQ for allowing me to read something so beautiful and unique.
A Groundhog Day tale from a different perspective each day. Really enjoyable and didn’t feel réplétive at all - as the different people observed different things and brought different layers to the story.
Loved it!!
Lovely lovely book. Was a great read and very enjoyable.
Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
it is never to early to read christmas novels and this debut by Rachel Greenlaw did not disappoint.
It almost has a modern day feel to the Christmas Carol. it was a very enjoyable read. I also feel the cover was very eye catching and would attract many readers to see what lies within the pages of this
One Christmas Morning is the debut novel by Rachel Greenlaw. It follows the story of overworked, overwrought Eva, who is desperately trying to get her 'baby,' a luxury homewares shop, launched just after Christmas. The only problem is .. well, everything else. Because she's been working all the hours God sends, all her relationships including her marriage, are beginning to deteriorate around her. Her husband James has demanded that she take some time off over Christmas to spend away with their best friends at an old house in Cornwall Eva used to visit as a child with her grandmother.
The story then turns into a kind of modern take on A Christmas Carol, where Eva, guided by the spirit of her beloved (but now dead) Gran, must live Christmas Day in the lives of those around her she has chosen to ignore. Will she see the error of her ways and be able to fix all that is nearing destruction??
I enjoyed this story immensely. I liked the twist Greenlaw uses in taking her inspiration from the classic. I initially couldn't decide whether I liked the main character or not but as the story gathered pace I kept turning the pages to see which character she would live through next. Heart warming and tragic in places, it isn't predictable but leaves the reader to come to their own conclusions about what is important in life. The only slight flaw was some of the description of Eva's friends got a little repetitive, but other than that a great first novel!
Many thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for an early release copy in exchange for an honest review.
