I fell into this story immediately and as the narration moved back and forth between past and present and change of narrative point, the secrets were laid bare. It’s a compelling family drama with a bunch of people it’s difficult to like. Julia is a work driven and her behaviour is questionable at every level. Her husband Paul is driven by a need to prove his worth, emotionally and materially and he does so by pushing his step daughter into practice, practice and more musical practice. Chrissie, the daughter, is caught in the middle and a victim in more ways than one, Then there’s Julia’s odious parents. What a pair of horrors.
Despite not liking the characters, this is a cleverly constructed tale of control, abuse and family guilt that affects generations. Because it’s so well written, I wanted to know who was holding what secret and why. The final chapters draw the background together; maybe a little too neatly. The characters are sharp, the dialogue realistic and it kept me entertained over a couple of evenings, so I’m happy with it overall. Good narration throughout.
My thanks to the publisher for a review copy via Netgalley
This one is a good but disturbing read, taking you down a meandering path of misery. The book points to abuser after abuser but rounds the story up nicely in the end.
The Goodlights family’s obsession with keeping up the facade of a perfect life unravels when their teenage daughter Chrissie goes missing. I couldn’t get enough of this audiobook. The narrators were easy to listen to and I didn’t expect the turns this book took. Philippe East does a fantastic job of including multiple twists to the story without making it seem like she’s trying too hard. The book had a great flow and I loved the ending.
Thank you HarperCollins UK and Netgalley for this ARC audiobook
I think this is the first audio book I have listened to when I didn’t know the story.
Chrissie is a highly talented performer who is about to quality for the finals of Young Musician Of The Year, until she suddenly goes missing.
What follows is the story being told through the eyes of the parents, partly with events leading up to the disappearance and partly in present time.
Narrated by both a man and a woman, both were clear, produced effortless characterisation and made the whole thing a pleasure to listen to.
The story unravels but at no great pace. The conclusion, when it arrives, is all too relatable and makes the story more believable because of this.
A really interesting novel and I have on the back of this, been converted to audio as well as written novels.
Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK Audio for providing me with an Advance Reader's Copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
A cautionary tale about our steive for perfection. How the goal of striving to be perfect can set us free, and also how it can ensnare is a web of lies, deception, mistrust, and heartache
I received an audiobook ARC of I’LL NEVER TELL from HarperCollins UK Audio, and so this review is being held until the US HarperCollins Union gets a fair contract
Okay, so this is a complicated book to read with all the different points of view and timelines but it works in the end as it all comes together. Added to the complication is the backstories of the main characters and their secrets which have an impact on Chrissie.
Listening to it on audio meant that you had to really concentrate but it was worth it. My dogs had lots of strokes whilst I curled up and listened. The narration really worked and suited the story and helped with the different points of view.
The mind to come up with such a convoluted story is amazing and how the author can put it all in a story and still remember all the twists and turns is amazing and I am in awe.
I was given an advance copy by the publishers and netgalley but the review is entirely my own.
Thanks for the opportunity to access this audio ARC. I really enjoyed listening to this on audio as it gave the characters a bit more personality and when I read the second half on audio book I found myself relating and visualising the characters better which meant that I got into the book more.
Thank you HarperCollins UK Audio, HQ and Netgalley for this audio.
It was a fantastic listening in many timelines and so many secrets that are hided. It makes sense all, you just need to be patient. Layer over layer of possible scenaries. It was really one of books I suspected right but not all the way. And it was tothaly better then expected.
A suspense filled domestic thriller, which unwraps the lies of a seemingly perfect family while they search for their missing daughter.
I have nothing but good things to tell you about this novel, it’s well plotted. The characters are well formed and Julia (the mother) is deeply unlikeable for the majority of the story. There is a twist at the end that I genuinely didn’t see coming, although I’d garnered some clues then dismissed them. A clever novel. Somehow, I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as I admired the writing. I know that’s an odd thing to say, but I felt more interested in how the minutia of the story had been picked over with such precision. I’m aiming that as a compliment! 3 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.
An enjoyable listen on the audiobook with just enough suspense to keep you engaged and want to listen to the next chapter. One for the long winter evenings
Sexy girl! Super creepy domestic trailer with a teenage prodigy, and a slightly icky devoted stepfather
The narration on the review Audiobook was great, and I was biting my nails, the whole time, waiting to see what would happen – I genuinely could not guess the twists or figure out what would happen next! We always know there’s some thing a foot girl goes missing, but this took a very familiar trope and really brought extra suspense! Easy five stars .
3.5 stars
The red flags started waving early on this one and they didn't stop.
Everyone seemed to have something they were trying to hide, and the clues as to what were great to follow.
I listened to the audio book, and both narrators added to the tension of the book across the timelines.
Yes, I guessed a few things that were coming, and yes I kept listening to find out what else would be revealed.
This kept me entertained on many a long walk, right to the last chapter.
