A Winter Grave is set in 2051 in the not too distant future. It’s a future that is familiar and recognisable but simultaneously a future transformed by the impact of global warming.
Cameron Brodie, a Glasgow detective travels to the Scottish Highlands to investigate after a meteorologist discovered the body of a man entombed in ice in the mountains.
Brodie also has his own personal journey to make whilst investigating and is forced to revisit his own past and relationships.
I very much enjoyed the setting of the near future and also enjoyed the commentary on the environment, particularly global warming and it’s immediate impact on immigration.
A special mention must be made about the narrator, Peter Forbes, who did an excellent job.
Huge thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Quercus Audio, for the the audio-ARC in return for a fair and honest review.
WOW!
This audible book is a futuristic, twisting and turning audible book set in the Scottish Highlands. The body of an investigative journalist is found entombed in the ice and Detective Inspector Cameron Brodie is sent to Kinlochleven to investigate his death. DI Brodie is a damaged policeman with hidden secrets and Brodie has his reasons to investigate. I loved his character. All characters are believable to be liked and disliked in equal measure.
The narration by Peter Forbes is excellent, slipping easily in and out of the characters which adds to the enjoyment of the audible book. The writing is superb with wonderful descriptions you can picture in your head. The storyline jumps back and forth from past to present. At 9 hours listening time, easily completed in one sitting.
I would recommend this audible book and give 5-star rating.
I WANT TO THANK NETGALLEY FOR THE OPPORTUNITY OF LISTENING TO AN ADVANCED COPY OF THIS AUDIBLE BOOK FOR AND HONEST REVIEW.
Absolutely heartbreaking! Another great book from Peter May with some beautiful twists. All set on a snowy island in the middle of a storm. That is cliched but the rest does not follow tradition.
A near future police procedural thriller. Loved the characters and pacing. A body found in the ice leads Brodie to investigate the murder and try to talk to his estranged daughter. Some parts a bit predictable but not distract from the enjoyment of the novel and the narrator' add the the enjoyment.
I received this audiobook from Quercus and Netgalley for a review.
3.5 stars
I listened to the audio book, and extra points for the excellent narrator.
Set in a not too distant future, where climate change has brought all those things we imagined, this book mixes police drama and family drama so well.
Both story lines slot seamlessly together, and notch up the tension every time.
Some good twists, and some very believable characters, I particularly liked Brodie.
I've read a few Peter May books, and I think this might be my favourite.
A Winter Grave is a standalone novel set in the near future with some scary insights into what the world might look like if climate change isn’t taken seriously and acted upon. However while this is the background it is not a social commentary but a mystery/thriller set in the Scottish Highlands.
The characters are well written and given sufficient depth to hold the interest and make them believable with getting too bogged down with background, although Brodie, the main character, reveals more about his past as the story goes on.
The story moves along at a good pace with plenty of thrills and action, murder and intrigue along the way. Peter Forbes does an excellent job of narrating and bringing the characters to life with a voice that is easy to listen to and a pleasant scottish accent.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and while Peter May is a new author to me I’ll be adding him to my list of favourites based on this novel alone. A highly recommended read/listen. A solid 5 stars from me.
I was given a free advance copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.
