Absolutely brilliant, loved it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an advance copy, I will definitely be recommending.

Jen, Isobel and Zelda all with connections to a religious group and have all faced or are facing disfellowship by the elders.
Jen as a result of a medical decision that saved her life. Isobel and Zelda for their choices following the actions of men in their lives. None of the women are believed or given support by those most close to them, instead they are punished with disfellowship in the name of ‘love’ and ‘redemption’.

It’s a fascinating read into the inequality in the cult with all decisions made by the male elders, the rules that primarily work in favour of the menfolk and the disappointing lack of support from the sisterhood.

The book jumps between the three women and picks up different times and events from their lives some of which link the three together.

A great read and I really enjoyed it. Would recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This an unbelievably gripping story. It’s so masterfully written as well, the timelines of the three female characters weaving in and out of each other seamlessly. Such a powerful portrayal of life as part of an intense religion. All the characters’ stories were complex, but Isobel’s was so heartwarming in the end. And Zelda’s, although heartbreaking, was also perfect. I couldn’t have loved this more.

This book consumed my entire being for 24 hours. Whilst I wasn’t reading it, it was all I could think about. And whilst I was reading it, again, it was all I could think about.
If I could sum the book up with three words it would be:
Heart-rending. Exquisite. Powerful.
Please just do yourself a favour and read it!

Oh, Sister is a beautifully written book about three women: Zelda, Isabel, and Jen. Each has their own struggles, but all are linked to a community that makes living in modern society challenging. They all are, or were, part of the extreme religious group ‘The Disciples of the Last Days’, which has hugely impacted how they live their lives.

This is a book that can’t fail to move you in some way. I found it took a while to really get into, but once I did I was hooked. The plot is not fast-paced, but rather a slow builder which drew me in more and more. It’s a fascinating look into how women are often controlled by religion and those at the top, despite them claiming to be doing ‘what is best for them’. There are some really difficult topics addressed in this book but it feels like it’s all treated in a balanced way.

Though all of the characters had their faults, you can’t help but root for them to overcome the people and organisation which is holding them back. I don’t want to give too much away about the story but it definitely highlights the hypocrisy of groups like this, without adding unnecessary drama or hyperbole. The three protagonists – Zelda, Isabel, and Jen – felt like convincing characters and I would have happily read so much more about them – I turned the last page and really wished it wasn’t the end! Oh, Sister is another brilliantly crafted novel by Jodie Chapman and I’d highly recommend it.

Unfortunately not me. The premise is interesting but not the sort of book I particularly enjoy and therefore hard for me to get into

Oh Sister certainly captured my attention. I found myself thinking about this book, and the women in it, every time I wasn't reading it.

Oh Sister looks at the lives of 3 women, Zelda, Isobel and Jen. All different, linked together by the End of Days religion they are a part of (the bake of the religion has been changed but it's about Jehovah's Witnesses).

I'm not sure whether it was the ebook format or the book in general, but it took a while for me to get to grips with the way it jumped around and to separate the 3 women's voices as 2 of them in particular I kept confusing with each other. By the end I liked all 3 of them and was rooting for them to find happiness or peace. I liked that the ending wasn't a perfect resolution for any of the women but they were all at a different place of growth from the beginning.

This was a really interesting read for me. Previous to this book, what I knew about Jehovah's Witnesses was limited to not celebrating birthdays and Christmas and refusing blood transfusions, but I had no idea of the inequality towards women and how they are treated within the community. It's sad that once a small group of elders decide you have broken the rules, you are shunned by everyone you know. It seems like a very unforgiving, strict community to be a part of. A lot of the rules seem to be in place purely to control women, which is very scary.

This book really grew on me to the point where I was completely absorbed. I recommend it if you like books about womanhood and religion.

3 women, all from the same religious background, find themselves banished. In their different ways they find strength within themselves to face the world outside their faith and understand what is really in their hearts.

Jen, Zelda and Isobel are all brought vividly to life in this heart wrenching novel. I felt every frustration, fear and heartbreak of the characters.

The ending was a little unfulfilling and abrupt for me but overall I found Oh Sister equal parts challenging, perceptive and uplifting.

A fabulous read. I went into this rather blind, I don’t think the blurb gives an awful lot away. I’ve not read a book for a while that’s had such an emotional impact- I was actually quite angry for a lot of the book!

Another incredible read from Jodie Chapman. I adored the female characters in this novel and felt such anger towards the religion - and the men - responsible for inflicting these miseries on them. An absolutely compelling novel, full of heart.

Jen. Isobel. Zelda. Three women whose lives have been shaped by an unnamed religion. A religion that dictates women must be submissive to their husband's and follow a strict set of rules. Where freedom to be your own person is not an option.

Jen. Isobel. Zelda. Three women whose stories will stay with you beyond the last page.

God, I loved this book. It made me so angry and it made me cry. The writing is beautiful. I genuinely don't think any review can do it justice. I will have to re-read it just so I can soak up the beauty of it again.

The characters themselves are wonderfully written. The strength these women have is remarkable. Chapman imbues each character with such grace and dignity. I wanted to hug each of them at times throughout the book. I honestly think I have learned from all three of these fictional women. Also, Victor and Will both have a place in my heart. They were the perfect juxtaposition against the other men in this book, they were such a balm.

Do look at trigger warnings before you read this book however as it does contain some very upsetting parts.

Overall I adored this book and its one of my favourite reads of 2023, maybe one of my favourites of all time. I hope this book gets the praise is so very much deserves when it's published.

This was an incredibly unique, interesting read. The writing style was enjoyable and I found myself always curious about where each of our three characters would end up. Nevertheless I struggled to really connect to any of them. I definitely came the closest with Zelda, she's really what kept me tethered to it. With such a character driven novel, I wish I felt closer to it but still very strong.

Powerful and unflinching. I couldn’t put it down once I got going. I HOPE this gets picked up by the BBC as Jodie is a force to be reckoned with.
