What a great read. It is a clever story, with lots of surprises along the way. I really enjoyed all the well written characters some more likeable than others! This book has a lot of heart and soul with a nice level of humour. I will definitely read more.

I really enjoy reading Rob Rinder as they are easy reading whilst keeping you in suspense with twists and turns right up to the end.

Pupil barrister, Adam Green is working hard to try to secure tenancy at Stag Court but he struggles to get positive outcomes to a lot of his cases. He is surprised when he and his pupil master, Johnathan Taylor-Cameron gets assigned a high profile case to defend Jimmy Knight on the charge of the murder of DI Grant Clivedon,

DI Clivedon died within minutes of taking the stand in a trial at the Old Bailey Magistrates Court and police investigations identified Jimmy Knight as the prime suspect, despite no physical evidence and the rest circumstantial at best.

Taylor-Cameron has no interest in the case as he believes its a foregone conclusion that Knight is guilty - and as its on legal aid, he won't receive payment. Adam believes that Knight may be innocent but when Knight refuses to answer any questions - can he find the evidence needed to raise reasonable doubt with the jury.

An enthralling and pacy courtroom drama that will have you flipping through the pages. The wit and wisdom of Rob Rinder shines through every page from the light-hearted, witty tone to the sharpnand shrewd courtroom language and legal jargon. Adam Green is a trainee barrister and has found himself at the centre of a case that is attracting a media frenzy. The furore is due to the poisoning and subsequent death of Grant Cliveden, an officer with a heroic police service, and the accused is newly released multiple offender Jimmy Knight. The case has more twists than gnarled tree branch and pushes Adam into unknown territory that will attract some unhappy attention. A guaranteed page-turner. #thetrial #robrinder #penguin #netgalley

I am a big fan of Rob Rinder ever since Judge Rinder started on TV. When I heard he was writing a murder mystery book I was so excited. I loved this book!

I really enjoyed this book - books set within the English justice system always interest me, so this is why this title appealed initially. You can tell this is Rob Rinder’s area of expertise - an intriguing storyline with believable characters and peppered with moments of humour alongside the courtroom asides. Great book!

This was a one nighter - absolutely gripped me.

"When hero policeman Grant Cliveden dies from a poisoning in the Old Bailey, it threatens to shake the country to its core.

The evidence points to one man. Jimmy Knight has been convicted of multiple offences before and defending him will be no easy task. Not least because this is trainee barrister Adam Green's first case."

This is such a clever way of telling the story of a murder and this is a clever one.
Really liked the insight into how a trial works and the ways of the inns of court.

An Intelligent and knowledgeable insight into the back rooms of the law. Clever, witty and fast paced I really enjoyed the good, bad and downright nasty characters both sides of the beach. Great story telling.

Thank you so much to Netgalley for providing me an e-arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. I don't think I have read a mystery from the perspective of a lawyer before so this was refreshing. I did notice a few errors in some passages but I am sure they would have been fixed upon release. I would recommend this book.

I was really looking forwards to reading this because Judge Rinder is a classic TV show but I was really disappointed because none of Rinder's wit and sharpness made it into the book and it was really quite a drab cosy crime story, although from the less usual perspective of the legal team. The story itself was OK but the characterisation was extremely poor with each of the characters a different terrible cliche, and then some of them completely changed personality halfway through the book. I'm clearly in the minority though, but it just didn't do anything for me.

This was a brilliant courtroom drama, and was on the edge of my seat as everything was unfolding. The twists and turns were well executed and can’t wait to see what else this author writes.

What an absolute great legal drama! I absolutely love legal dramas and fully appreciate all the research that authors complete on the legal research, but I really appreciated this book, being written by a practising barrister. The tiny details from the times that the judge calls for lunch, to the attitude of the barrister’s clerk. This book just had everything for me from a legal point of view and made me enjoy the book so much more
In this book, we are introduced to Adam, a pupil barristers, striving to please the barristers at his chamber for tenancy. Adam has been making a bit of a mess of his recent bail applications and then he lands a big case! Is he able to secure a win for the client

The writing just flows in this book and I really enjoyed the phone call chapters between Adam and his mum. His mum made my heart melt with the little gifts she dropped off. The book comprises of short chapters and the “just one more chapter” feeling is definitely alive in this book!

I really wanted something to come if Abi, but I don’t think this is the last we have heard from Adam Green!

Fingers crossed that this is the start of a brand new series!

Highly recommend this book and it is out today! Happy reading!

When trainee barrister Adam Green is given a case to defend the man accused of poisoning the country’s favourite police man, Grant Cliveden he feels it could ruin his career. His pupil master treats him with contempt and has no interest in the case they have been handed. Part courtroom drama and part crime thriller this book will quickly draw you in and keep you guessing. It’s full of fantastic characters and twists with a satisfying ending. I absolutely loved it.

This thriller started slowly and warmed up very quickly. With Rob Rinders knowledge and sense humour it became one of my favourite books of 2023.

What an absolute corker of a courtroom thriller.

The Trial by Rob Rinder presents us with Adam Green, trainee solicitor who is desperate to win a coveted place in a respected office. When he is put on a high profile murder case he is expected to do grunt work and kowtow to his teacher. However, the more he looks into the case the more inconsistencies he sees and Adam begins to question whether his client is guilty or not.

This is a fantastic debut from Rob Rinder. When you read it, you know that the legalese is going to be accurate but even better than that is a well crafted story with a likeable protagonist who you feel could carry a whole series. I cannot wait for the sequel!

The Trial by Rob Rinder is available now.

I love a courtroom drama so as a Rob Rinder fan I was excited to read this one! And it didn't disappoint - Rinder uses his knowledge of the English legal system to create an entertaining read, I enjoyed getting to know pupil barrister Adam as he finds himself involved in a high profile case - with plenty of twists and turns and a dry wit that ensures lots of chuckles along the way, I look forward to what I assume will become a series in future.

I was gripped by this thriller, enjoying a window into the legal system and raced through the plot, eager to see it unfold.

Adam Green, the main character, has been very well created. I think he will draw empathy from everyone who reads this. He is young, enthusiastic, hard working and trying so hard to fit in! His mother adds a delicious drop of humour, with her attempts to marry him off.

The story is from Adam’s point of view, as a trainee barrister who believes strongly in justice and the system. He feels that the deeper he digs, the more he will discover. However, he finds that he doesn’t quite know who to trust, there are so many people with secrets that they are not willing to fully reveal. Adam has a very unpleasant ‘pupil master’ who appears to have different motivations to Adam.

The other characters in the book are so well fleshed out, I could see the story evolving in my mind.

Setting the book mainly between chambers, the court and the prison, created a really solid base and, I felt, gave us a glimpse into the long hours and relentless workload of the trainee barristers, and the immense pressure on them.

The poisoning of Grant Cliveden, the main case, was fascinating and there were plenty of reveals and twists, to constantly make the reader re-evaluate their theories. There were some moments of real tension, where I found my heart in my mouth.

A thoroughly enjoyable , fast-paced read. Hoping there are further Adam Green adventures to come!

In all honesty, I didn't expect much from this book - could Rob Rinder, a criminal barrister, TV star, also be a good novelist?

Well, yes, yes he can! In The Trial, much respected and beloved police officer DI Grant Cliveden suspiciously collapses before he can give evidence in the witness box of a high-profile case. The book follows trainee barrister Adam Green who has to support on the case to defend Jimmy Knight who is accused of DI Cliveden's murder. Unfortunately for Adam, both his mentor and the case seem to stink - not helped by his rival for the pupillage appearing to be unable of putting a foot wrong.

Likeable characters abound in this exciting and engrossing read. The courtroom scenes are unsurprisingly brilliant and the murky underworld that comes to light once the case is underway is cleverly revealed.

To lighten the overall tense and heavy sections, there are some lovely sidebars with Adam and his mum. Very cute.

Overall, this book is fast-paced and full of unpredictable twists and turns - I really enjoyed it and would happily read more by Rob Rinder.

I really love a well-written mystery told from a different and unique perspective and this certainly fits the bill.

I was hooked into following the perspective of Adam Green – trainee barrister with a murky past – as he dodges office politics and a pushy mother to become obsessed with solving his (apparently hopeless) big case, against all odds, advice and common sense.

I did manage to work out whodunnit fairly early on, but the story kept me guessing anyway and the final reveal and ending were very satisfying, so I had no complaints there.

Rob Rinder’s style is not as literary as legal-fiction predecessors like John Grisham but provides a far easier read and plenty of entertainment for mystery lovers.
