A very good debut novel from Rob Rinder. Using his experiences in the British legal system the author has created a very readable novel about the trial of a man accused of murdering a popular policeman .We are given insights into the workings of a London legal practice and in particular the life of a “pupil” just starting out in that practice. The main character is such a pupil and his desire for the truth and his naïveté form the major part of the story. Not the best book I have read this year but certainly not the worst and I look forward to further offerings from this author
Great book, easy to get into and stay engrossed.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
I love crime and mystery books so was really intrigued by this book. Also knowing the author has worked within the British justice system was a brilliant bonus to see a little of what happens outside of what we see in the media.
I found the story to be gripping and I was rooting for Adam the whole way through. I'm so pleased there is going to be more in this series.
I kind of thought this would be one of those celebrity books that everyone buys and raves about because they recognise the author from beloved tv shows but this is actually a fantastic book. Really engaging and fast paced. I hope we get to find out what Adam does next.
I never repeat the blurb. Superbly insightful in its writing and with much interesting detail, avoiding too much, unlike some authors. I personally can't wait for the next installment as the characters are just great and there is certainly ample opportunity for more intriguing cases.
Love this man's humour and tongue in cheek moments!! Thought this book may be a little too technical and stodgy but the author's way with words and twisted humour cam through brilliantly!!
Just a good story told with a bit of wry funniness, hope he's writing the next book!
Many thanx to NetGalley, the author and the publishers for allowing me to read and review this book.
This is the first book I have read by Rob Rinder and what a pleasure it was to read. What captivated me from the start was that it was not the typical murder book but one written from the lawyers point of view . Yes there are similarities to a police investigation but the investigation from a lawyers position is one of beyond reasonable doubt. The story begins with the heroic police officer Grant Cliveden being murdered in court as he is about to take the stand. The story surrounds a pupil barrister and his pupil master who has made up his mind that James Knight is guilty whilst his enthusiastic pupil believes he is innocent. As the events unfold and the characters are examined and introduced it becomes clear there is more to this murder and an unexpected twist at the conclusion. I recommend this book to you and I am looking forward to more books from the pen of Rob Rinder.
I unfortunately couldn't get into this book but that is just my own personal preference and I would still recommend it to others to try and read.
I was really interested to read Rob Rinder's debut novel, which is as you would expect, set around the dramas of the courtroom and the life of a junior barrister. It was a quick easy read, with lots of pacey narrative and I enjoyed it as an easy beach read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I absolutely ADORED this.
A classic mystery with clever plotting and an addictive feel. As a legal drama it is particularly good given the rather staid nature of the British justice system which doesn't generally lend itself to high drama when fictionalised.
The characters are intriguing and the case itself has plenty of little twists along the way plus you get a genuinely thought provoking final outcome.
Excellent. Hope this becomes a series.
I really enjoyed this book. Really well written and a great cast of characters. Kept me engrossed throughout. Recommended.
I was sent a copy of The Trial by Rob Rinder to read and review by NetGalley. This was a really engaging novel that has been well researched, as you would expect considering the author! I really enjoyed it and found it really interesting, possibly all the more so because I did Jury Service myself recently. There are plenty of twists and turns with many of those inklings you get when reading, that you know what happened or whodunnit, turning to dust when you find you were quite wrong! A great mixture of procedure and action, well worth a read.
Brilliantly constructed, cleverly plotted and packed with finely detailed characters - I'd love to know if Rob Rinder based these on people he knows...
A marvellous first novel and I can't wait to read the next. Crime from a new angle, for me, and most welcome.
Actual 4.5*
I really enjoyed this one from Rob Rinder as I particularly like a plot that focuses on trials and this didn't disappoint.
Obviously as a former barrister, Judge Rinder is meticulous with his research and I enjoyed learning more about this part of the law and life of an up and coming barrister.
Highly recommended.
Really gripping courtroom drama. Adam Green is a pupil barrister and determined to fight for justice for his client accused of murdering a much respected police officer. With everything against him, including his mentor he leaves no stone unturned.
Thoroughly enjoyable legal thriller with well fleshed out characters, some likeable and others deliberately less so. A few twists along the way to keep you guessing to (near enough) the end as to the guilt of the client.
Hopefully Mr Rinder can come up with another plot that's just as good and well written.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publishers and author for my review copy.
Trainee barrister Adam Green is struggling with his pupillage but when he is attached to the country's highest profile case he thinks his luck is turning. A media star policeman has been killed and the case against the accused seems solid but Green and his pupil master are on the side of the defence rather than the prosecution. As Green tries to find the answers he also has to juggle professional and personal issues.
As far as 'celebrity' fiction goes, this one is quite good but I found it confusing in terms of what direction it wanted to go in. There is a gritty streak which would indicate a tough procedural-style story but this is interspersed with the 'cosiest' sections that seem at odds.
Brilliant courtroom thriller, very well written with a dry wit, it's quite the page-turner. Great plot and well drawn characters meant the story flowed really smoothly. I enjoyed the legal aspects and felt that really added to how the plot unfolded. Adam was a great main character and you just had to root for him, his mum was hilarious! Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend, can't wait for the next one!
In The Trial, Rob Rinder presents a gripping murder mystery with plenty of legal drama that unravels the intricacies of the justice system while offering an unfiltered glimpse into the complexities of real-life courtroom battles. As a former criminal barrister, Rob Rinder relies on his wealth of experience to create an entertaining and authentic narrative.
The story revolves around a trial following a high-profile murder case, with the defendant, Jimmy Knight , standing accused of a heinous crime that has captured the nation’s attention. Rinder’s expert knowledge of the legal world is evident as he expertly crafts the courtroom scenes, injecting a palpable sense of tension and suspense that mirrors the atmosphere of a real trial. However, Adam Green, trainee barrister and Rinder’s surrogate in the novel, gets to be far more involved in solving the murder than the average barrister.
The novel’s pacing is well-executed, with twists and turns that keep readers on their toes, questioning the guilt or innocence of the accused. The courtroom scenes are gripping and well-researched, giving readers a taste of the adrenaline and pressure experienced by legal professionals during such trials. yet, while The Trial is undoubtedly an engrossing mystery, there are moments when the story’s momentum slightly wavers, and certain subplots could have been further developed to add depth to the overall narrative.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC.
Partial to a police procedural/courtroom drama and knowing Rob Rinders background I was looking forward to this and it didn't disappoint.
Adam Green is on a pupilage at a prestigious law firm. When top policeman and hero cop Grant Cliveden dies at the Old Bailey whilst going to give evidence ex con Jimmy Knight is top of the suspect list and soon arrested.
Adam knows there is much more to the case as the evidence stacks up and more enemies of Clivedens are exposed but with the country in uproar at the murder of their most beloved police officer how can Adam, on his first big case, convince everyone differently. His search for the truth could cost him everything and he has a lot to lose.
Highly recommended five start and patiently waiting for another installment.
