✨I would battle a raging fever in a historical romance novel for Maggie I love her so much 😤✨

This one was a little slow to start because the main characters don’t meet in person until around 38% and there were a lot of conversations (with each other and their teammates) in their gaming guild that I didn’t really care about. I didn’t mind their conversations but whenever the younger college bros typed I swear my gag reflex kicked in lol.

HOWEVER, once these two met up I was kicking and screaming. He thought she was going to be 80!! and she thought he was 20!! and it was GLORIOUS. They were like messaging is fun but this definitely not going anywhere because a. neither was interested in dating and b. the suspected age differences.

Aiden was a burly lumberjack cinnamon roll and Maggie was a true bogwitch of the best variety. This was truly the main couple against the world romance. They both are there for each other when they need a shoulder to cry on or someone to be quiet with.

It also had my favorite trope of a main character literally going feral defending the honor of the other!!! Bonus points for the defended being totally smitten and turned on and GRATEFUL. Ugh I eat it up every time. Maggie is literally the baddest bogbitch ever. She was like hold my earrings 😩 and he had to stop her from lunging over the table 😌 and then he gave “easy killer” vibes 😤

I also loved how honest and open their communication was. I think Maggie was 48 and Aiden was 50 so it was really fun and (unfortunately) rare to see characters of that age range depicted as the MCs in romance! The conversation around Aiden’s sexuality was just so lovely. After Maggie and him discuss, he’s finally able to have terms for how he expresses his sexuality—he’s bisexual and demisexual. Understanding the terms demi and bi helped Aiden finally have a vocabulary for who he is and I thought that was wonderful!!

**Just to note, there are major content warnings for queerphobia, nonconsensual outing, and disownment by family members. As well as aging parents and those complications (my parents are going through this with their parents and it hit pretty close to home). The hero was a former hospice worker and sometimes details brief memories. Also a toxic ex husband and other toxic past relationships that include getting cheated on.

The above warnings mentioned were pretty rough and the hero particularly goes through a lot of hate regarding his sexuality. Frankly, I hated (at one moment or another or ALL) nearly every character not named Maggie or Aiden. It was hard seeing both characters that I loved so much get so jerked around and shit on. **Spoiler** thank god they eventually moved out of that toxic ass town.

Overall, I ended up really loving this one. It was a total cover buy** and the coziness of Maggie and Aiden together did not disappoint. I was rooting for those two so hard and I’m so happy with the choices they ended up making and how they reacted to some really hard situations. There wasn’t a third act breakup and maturity won kids.

*With the title Role Playing I did think this would be steamier and it was a bit of a Chekhov’s double entendre? The language was pretty light and vague during the penetration scene. They dry humped for their first time which was pretty hot. It was only the two scenes with a real buzzkill happening after the last scene. And to my dismay the only roleplaying really was in the video games lmao.

DNF. I got several chapters in and found myself not enjoying it. It’s not terrible - in fact I think many would like it but I was bored. Maybe it’s because I’m at least a decade younger than the female main character and I am married.

I didn't know how desperate I was for the particular mixed rep where you very clearly know they're mixed but they do not once quantify how Asian that makes them. they just ARE. they are mixed but they are NOT fractionally as Asian.

This book spoke to me on so many levels, but it especially appealed to my inner game geek. I only hope I am still as into games as I currently am, when I get to Maggie's age, although I suspect I will be, as they are a part of me.

And all the ingame chat, and talk of raiding guilds, boss runs, loot, and roles such as tanks and healers is all such familiar language to me and reminded me of my own time raiding while playing a massive MMORPG for a few years that I was addicted to.

Thus I could completely understand and empathise with Maggie wanting to not necessarily be an obvious female gamer, and I loved how she dealt with the youngsters in the guild.

And Aiden is just lovely, he grew on me big time, he is struggling with his family and it turns out a whole lot more too. Both are adamant they have no interest at all in dating generally and given they grew to be friends initially online, without having any idea who the other really is, the eventual meeting was gold!

Neither Aiden or Maggie are overly social beings, much to the confusion to just about everyone in their small town, and many humorous attempts to "make them more normal" were things that the two leads could have done without.

I loved seeing how they connected both online and in real life and was hooked on finding out just what would happen. I couldn't get enough of this book, and I'm surprised I've never encountered this authors wonderful writing before. Something I will clearly need to change in the future, if these are the sorts of books she writes.

Utterly fabulous, loved every second of it.

Overall,
I am a sucker for gaming love stories. Add in that this is a Gen X romance with middle age adults finding love I am 100% here for it. The friendship that they develop before the romance is really sweet as well and I LOVE that they actually communicated with each other, I hate miscommunication tropes (except for when its anonymous online friendships :P). The book is not very long at a solid 330 pages. It is honestly a very quick read and while it is a slow burn, the relationship feels pretty organic. The cover is also really cute.

I loved everything about this book. Chefs kiss hands down; I would give this book a six if I could. This is my first five-star book of 2023, and I could not be happier. This is a dual perspective adult romance. Maggie and Aiden are amazing characters. They were diverse, compassionate and fun. Maggie is a tough nut, dealt with a lot of crap most of her life, fighting tooth and nail to protect her kid and would rather be herself and on her own then deal with drama. Aiden was this sweet, caring, shy teddy bear. They had an amazing dynamic, communication between them was open and honest. The writing was good, it was well paced, detailed enough that I got a sense of the characters, as well as the evolution of their relationship. The communication was amazing, I Can't say enough about it and there were no miscommunication plot points, which was so nice to have. Highly recommend it. There were a lot of gaming, anime, and fantasy references and it was so fun and joking, the atmosphere was great.

I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book. As I get older I'm trying to figure out where in the booksphere I belong. Can I still read YA? Is New Adult any good? I never thought a rom-com about two people in their late 40s and 50s would be where I settled. I loved the two MCs so much! Aiden's path to discovering his sexuality and Maggie learning to love again after a controlling ex was so refreshing to read about. I loved the gaming aspect and all the text conversations, too. Oh, and I'm always a sucker for grumpy girl x sunshine boy!

A really solid later in life romance, that considers all those little decisions we make and how society looks at people.

This is honestly one of the sweetest romances I have read in a long time. It's a good cozy read too. Maggie meets Aidan in an online game. At first she thinks he's a 20 something and he thinks she's in her 80s, but when they meet in person they realize they're both middle aged and a fast friendship forms between these two extreme introverts. It's a friends to lovers romance and they have to navigate each other's complicated family dynamics as well. It also does the best job with handling demisexual representation that I have read in fiction thus far. I will wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Role Playing will warm your heart.
This follows two older MCs (in their mid-late 40s) which was a nice change to read about in a romance novel. I thought the characters were charming and lovable. I especially loved cinnamon roll Aiden. He was dreamy.
I liked how the romance developed (first online through a video game chat and then IRL interactions). It made the romance seem grounded and realistic; after all so many people meet online first nowadays. The romance was very sweet and heartwarming, but be prepared that it's a bit of a slow burn.
A charming, heartwarming romance about two introverts finding love and themselves.

Maggie grumpy, super introvert, anti social enjoy her life without bothering what people opinion. With his son (Kit) push she star making friend in game. Here she meet Aiden, kindheart, caring, sunshine type. She think Aiden about her son age, how surprise she is when know Aiden is older than her. When helping Aiden, they getting close, getting know each other, Aiden open up about himself and Maggie listening without judging, stand up from him. Aiden learning something new about himself. Beside that, somehow Aiden can touch Maggie heart.

Oh my godd the cover so beautiful!! The cover make me interesring first, i would say the cover make me request this book. Also i would say.. OMG I DIDNT SEE THIS COMING!!! This is interesting book!!! I learn a lot from this book about different kind of sexsual. Asexsual, allosexsual, bisexual, demisexsual and other else. Normal people will think Maggie and Aiden are different because how they choose their way of life but there are explanation. This is reminder that every each individual not same.

This was a really thoughtful and fun book. I was a little concerned about how slow this moved at first, but it made a LOT more sense once the conversation around Aiden’s demisexuality came out. Maggie and Aiden are both so interesting, and I love how they learned to rely on each other while also standing up for themselves. A great book!

This is my new comfort book. The dynamic, lovable characters blew me away and I love seeing middle age characters with hobbies and showing growth! I also enjoyed that these are two introverts finding each other. It’s rare to see that in a romance, so often it’s an extrovert forcing an introvert out and about and I don’t always enjoy that. This was a breath of funny, sweet, slow burn fresh air!

Role Playing is about a later in life romance with a fifty year old MMC and a forty-eight year old FMC. Each has a complicated history regarding relationships of various sorts, as older people do. The description of this book calls it a rom com but I am not sure why. There are some amusing parts, especially involving chats and texts, but it is not a comedy.

There are some serious themes involved here. One big one is the MMC dealing with a very toxic family dynamic, which could be triggering for some.

The love story is slow burn but it fits entirely with the storyline. I really liked both characters for both their admirable and their difficult qualities. They were very endearing to me. I also liked their efforts to communicate openly with each other as time went on and their comfort with each other grew.

I also have to note that I greatly appreciate the physical descriptions of the characters and that they did not have “perfect” bodies, and that the bodies they did have were attractive to each other. I really enjoyed the book.

This book is for the people who wish they can fall in love without having to leave their house!!

I had read one Cathy Yardley book prior to this one and it was a solid three star for me! So I honestly do not remember why I requested this one? But, either way this one was SO GOOD!!

It's a slowburn and a big focus on the story is both of them growing as people and there was *a tad* too much talking and conversing between the two leads for my liking, but I loved them so much so seeing them work through their issues instead of brushing it under a rug mostly worked for me.

I love an online friendship turned IRL friendship turned into LOVE. Add a bit of mistaken identity/assumption and it just worked for me. (As a note I do not care about video games, but I loved seeing them play with their guild and message each other).

Aiden is figuring out his sexuality throughout the book and eventually comes out as bi/demisexual which I LOVED SEEING.

And Maggie!! Gosh I loved her so much! She is almost 50 and just wants to play her video games and be alone (#relatable) but she is kind and will fight for the people she loves.

But, MAJOR TW FOR HOMOPHOBIA/BIPHOBIA AND FORCED OUTING. I haven't read a book with this much homophobia in a long time and it is 100% challenged and Maggie legit is about to fight the woman who outs Aiden, but Aiden's family is not supportive. I did like how it was wrapped up and [I am so glad Aiden was able to walk away from his mom and finally stand up for himself bc his mom was terrible?? 0/10 for parenting (hide spoiler)]

A Gen X romance between two introverts??? She's the grump and he's a cinnamon role hero??? I ate this book up!!!

This was a sweet, slow-burn romance between Maggie, a divorcée who has recently become an empty nester, and Aiden, a caregiver to his mother who has had his fair share of heartbreak. The pair form a fast friendship after meeting in a online gaming guild and quickly become important to one another despite not meeting in person. After a hilarious miscommunication, Maggie thinks Aiden is a 20 something college student and Aiden thinks Maggie is his mothers age, the pair realize that their IRL connection is just as strong as it is online.

This is a major slow-burn and I appreciated seeing the deep friendship form between Aiden and Maggie before their romance started. Maggie is fierce, strong, and isn't afraid to stand up for Aiden and I loved seeing her go up against some of the toxic people in his life.

If you like small town romances, reverse grumpy × sunshine, and mature characters who practice honest and open communication (I mean, who doesn't love that?), then I highly recommend this book.

Wonderful story! I don’t normally read romances about older couples but this one I really enjoyed. I loved the way the author wrote the characters and the way characters came together….. a must read!

This was such a wonderful romance! Usually you never get to see a romance between two “older” people, but that doesn’t mean their love stories are any less important. Aiden is such a cinnamon and I loved seeing his dynamic with grumpy Maggie, they meshed together so well! Overall this book was super enjoyable from start to finish!

I very rarely read romances about older characters, so I was hesitant to start this one. However, I was pleasantly surprised and really liked it! The communication between the characters was something I really appreciated. It was a slooow burn and I loved how they were friends first and really grew to know one another before starting a romance.

Cute and different from a lot of the titles out there. Geeky cute and it will definitely be an easy one to find an audience for it.
