I’m not sure I’ve hidden my love for Jessica Redland very well. She has very quickly become one of my all time favourite authors, a go-to for uplifting stories full of heart, which is impressive seeing as I only found her books in 2021. Her books are like sunshine in paper form.
The first thing I want to know, is where do I get a Barney in my life? Handsome man, loves dogs, is a farmer = perfecto! Please send him my way.
I really loved how Barney was explored. Men in fiction are often depicted as these strong, alpha heroes who don’t have feelings. But he’s been described very sensitively. He’s very human. He has emotions, he feels lonely, he wants love. And that’s not often explored in fictional men.
I loved that Jessica dropped in some characters from her Hedgehog Hollow series - Fizz, Draco’s and Phoebe. You don’t have to have read the Hedgehog series to keep up with them in this book, but it was a nice touch for those who have.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, her writing, storytelling and character building is second to none. The only thing I didn’t like was the reality TV plot, which I know is the majority of the book. And that’s not a negative comment on her writing at all, she writes it very well. I personally cannot stand reality dating shows. I love a bit of Strictly Come Dancing and Bake Off, but the dating shows give me the heebie-jeebies. And so it was more a personal opinion on the choice of topic, I hope that makes sense. It’s not a negative on her writing. If anything, it’s a positive, as she’s perfectly encapsulates all I dislike about the shows. I’m not sure even the promise of a hunky farmer at the end of it would convince me to appear on one.
It is very much a happily ever after type book - exactly what I’ve come to expect from her work - but it does pull an emotional punch getting there. You’ll find yourself mixing genuine smiles with rolling tears.
What I love about her books, and this one, is you know you’re going to get that warm, fluffy, cosy, beautiful ending, but it doesn’t hold back getting there. In this we have death and grief, mental and physical illness, affairs…all the things most readers will recognise and empathise with.
When a much loved authors brings out a new book - especially one that isn’t part of a tried and tested series - you start wondering if it’ll be as good. And whilst the whole reality TV premise wasn’t for me (see reasons above), I became fully invested in the characters’ stories and it definitely lived up to what I expect from her. I know this was a standalone novel, but I would be thrilled if she decided to expand it further.
Jessica Redland is one of my favorite authors and the Hedgehog Hollow series one of my favorites of all time. It was a bummer when the series ended so it was so great to see some of those characters again. The author makes a point of saying she did not want this to be a sequel and for the characters from Hedgehog Hollow to fit into this story in a natural and realistic way - I can happily say she achieved just that. Both of our lead characters are fantastic and so obviously perfect for one another. I'm not sure it was necessary to have Amber's boyfriend be an unrepentant cheater - she could have just realized they wanted different things (which she was already beginning to see). Between that guy and Parker I had serious questions about Amber's taste in men. Barney's backstory involving Elle definitely explained why he had developed his terrible taste in women. My only complaint about Jessica Redland is that she always makes you feel bad for characters you want to hate - that would be Elle in this case. I did still hate her a little, but I found I did soften a little toward her. I'm hoping this is a start to another short series. I can't see why there would be so much background on Amber's sister and Barney's best friend if they weren't going to get some sort of stories of their own. If you read this Ms. Redland, I would love to read those stories!
This was a really sweet book!
When Amber, a tv producer, takes on a job doing a reality show, she isn't excited about it. She completely dislikes reality shows, but in order to stay geographically close to her sister Sophie, she takes it on. It turns out to be much, much worse than she expected, well, except for meeting Barney, the farmer cast to fall in love.
This was a standalone, but some characters appear from Hedgehog Hollow. I enjoyed seeing Amber and Barney's feelings grow, and the fact that Amber stood by her professionalism the whole time. This was a clean, sweet, quick read. If you enjoy the English countryside and sweet romance, this is for you.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Amber and Barney. Set in Yorkshire and predominately at Bumblebee Barn this is part of the Hedgehog Hollow series. Amber is asked to be the producer on a new series called Love on the Farm a reality show to help farmers find love and Barney’s sister Fizz convinces him to apply. Add a couple of insensitive characters and chaos this had plenty of twists, turns, friendships and romance. This touched on topics such as loneliness and relationship breakdowns but also the importance of family and supporting each other. I loved the main characters and really felt for Barney when buried secrets came to light. Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.
Oh my giddy aunt Jessica does it again. The hedgehog series may have ended but we got little bits in this book. The story was about a tv producer who loved her job but had better some horrible people in her job. Her sisters back story was sad. I loved how we had Fizz around And Samantha. The story was told between Fizz’s brother Barney and Amber the tv producer. Jessica had twists and turns. Just made you hate reality tv. A fantastic read.. Can not fault it
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for a review.
Enjoyed this tale of Barney (remember Fizz from the Hedgehog Hollow series - it's her brother) and Amber. Barney is a farmer and lonely, encouraged by Fizz he applies to be on a reality show to find love. The show is produced by Amber and their tale is not without difficulty!
A gorgeous book which is quick and easy to ready but tackles a few tough subjects including loneliness.
It was wonderful to find out abour Barney and to get small glimpses into Hedgehog hollow, especially the brief reference to Samantha's second child!
A standalone book or a welcome addition if othere by the author have been read.
Lovely to have an update on some of the hedgehog gang. This was a lovely book and Jessica is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. This had gorgeous scenery, good friendship and a smattering of bad guys all rolled in. Barney sounds like a huge no and his dogs sound gorgeous. Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
This is a cute and cozy read, but it's not a simple one -- there are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing! Barney and Amber each have a history, and the show is supposed to help Barney move on to his future, but best laid plans of men and all that...it's no fun if things go as planned, right? With many tears along the way, and some punches thrown, this book shows the reader much insight into the farming life, behind the scenes of reality tv, and affairs of the heart. Apparently it is part of a series, but I didn't know that until the author's note, so it's definitely easily a stand-alone read.
Unfortunately I didn’t love this book, I thought it was sweet and a quick read, perfect for a cozy afternoon or beach read but I didn’t connect with the characters very strongly
This was an absolutely wonderful read. I loved my visit to Bumblebee farm. What a lovely sister Fizz was to suggest Barney applies for a reality TV show to help him find love. What an eye opener how the terms of the programme changed from something that would have been lovely to something which set out to humiliate the applicants. I loved how the story kept you on the edge of your seat due to the twists and turns. It was both heartwarming and heartbreaking at times. Love conquers all in the end. Brilliant,
Welcone to the world of Jessica Redland where dreams can come true and life has so much to offer! Her books have all gripped me from the very beginning and her style of writing draws you into the characters lives until you want every possible happiness for them..
This new series at Bumblebee Barn Farm showcases the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds and highlights the long less that some farmers can suffer from. With lots of humour, tears and tension this is a lovely book to curl up with.
Wow what can I say Having loved the hedgehog hollow series by this author and all of her other books I was eager to start this book in her new series and was pleasantly surprised to find her it contains characters from the hedgehog hollow books and references to the setting of the previous series which put a smile on my face. This book can be read as a standalone as the story is completely separate from
The others but I highly recommend all books from this author if you haven’t read them before.
Healing hearts was such a beautiful and escapism read and found myself totally absorbed in the story and the characters this book was so much more than just a romantic read as it also covered serious and sensitive topics and brought them out in the open
As a fan of finding love on the farm and other farm programmes on the tv this book totally appealed to me and I read it in one sitting and can’t wait for more in this weird to find out how the characters of amber and Barney blossom and what happens next.
This author has done it again with creating another brilliant story full of emotion and charm.
A sweet spinoff of the Hedgehog Hollow series following Fizz's brother Barney as he looks for love. He joins a reality show and we also follow producer Amber. A really fun story as both move on from past heartbreak
What improved about this book was that it is a completely standalone book but features some familiar faces and the sweet hedgehog rescue of the Hedgehog Hollow series books, so it's a win for new readers and long-standing Redland fans alike!
Focusing on the adorable Barney who runs the family farm but spends most of his time having one way conversations with his border collies, so with his sister's encouragement enters a reality TV dating show.
Amber is a TV producer who's usually allergic to reality TV and yet anxiety over a sibling means that producing the new Yorkshire based dating show is too enticing to resist. Both Barney and Amber have a supportive team of family & friends, but when the TV show descends into a farce and secrets & heartbreak come to light, there's suddenly a lot more at stake than both first thought.
Shining a spotlight on the important topic of loneliness, especially in farmers, this is written really well and gives a great dose of cosy comfort, bubbling chemistry and escape to the country.
This book was a breath of fresh air. It was soft and sweet, whilst also delving into different serious emotional experiences for the characters.
Barney was not the typical male lead, but I loved that he was strong yet sensitive, handsome yet not conceited and his response to being thrust into a crumbling 'farmer wants a wife' style dating show was engaging and entertaining.
Amber was relatable and I enjoyed her relationships with Zara and her family. Her inner monologue was entertaining but I did feel that Dan's character could have been completely excluded from the story, since Parker was also there.
Overall, a lovely read and I'll be going back to read Jessica Redland's other books.
I never read the blurb when picking a book by Jessica, I know I'm going to love whatever she writes. I'm really glad I didn't because it was so lovely to see characters from previous books pop up, but I won't say who. I will add you don't need to have read any other books to enjoy this.
I'm a big fan of the farming shows that are on TV, in particular the Canon Hall based one on the farm. So to have a book set on a farm is just my perfect read.
Told from the two main characters Barney, the farmer and Amber the TV producer. Both characters have a complex background involving ex partners and family and are brought together for a new reality series about finding love on a farm.
The setting is just gorgeous and I loved the parts about the sunrises and sunsets. It's funny and sad, heartwarming and heartbreaking and ends in a happily ever after. If you love stories about likeable characters, with a few bad eggs, complex backgrounds and a dash of sweet romance then you will love this.
