I am a huge fantasy fan, and read almost any YA fantasy I can get my hands on, but this is not one to read at this stage. While it follows a standard premise of young adult being thrust into an unfamiliar/magical work to survive, the writing is inconsistent and confusing. There is a lack of solid character development, leaving everyone feeling flat and/or stereotype, and events occur that have little link, meaning or motive. It need serious rewriting before I would recommend this.
In this fantasy we follow Hale, a young boy trying to escape from his kidnapper and suddenly he is thrust into a magical world which holds a lot of darkness and secrets. He find himself in the Land of Griffins, where you have to fight to survive. There are leaders with different types of talents, and many kids that just like Hale, will be taught how to turn into Griffins and use their abilities.
This book just didn't suit me, personally I couldn't get into the writing style and I felt like you were thrust into the story to suddenly and into a disjointed way and I was left confused for a lot of the book. I did enjoy the fantasy of the Griffins and how this had darker elements than you would typically find in a fantasy. However there were way too many characters and you were introduced to the too quickly to get a handle and who was who and what their motivations were. Overall this wasn't for me but I have seen it has ad many great reviews, so maybe it is just me so I do think this is worth a try for fantasy lovers.
