I loved this book, it had me laughing out loud and I NEEDED to see what was going to happen. A well written book with a perfect balance of love and humour. I really wish we could get a second instalment of Parker & Ryan.
I went into this book expecting romance to be at the heart. I was pleasantly surprised when actually, Harper’s character and her journey make this story.
Ryan and harpers relationship is stunning- don’t get me wrong. I just really loved how Harper developed, the turbulence in careers.
I can see why people say it’s a mixture of beach read meets the hating game. Quirky rivals to lovers in a work environment. It’s the perfect a pool side read.
After absolutely loving The Secret Bridesmaid and The Wedding Season, I was disappointed that this wasn’t wedding themed too. However, the journalist and celebrity angle was really entertaining. I also loved the love hate and opposites attract romance, and the witty flirty banter between the two main characters. So, another great, fun read although I did still slightly prefer the author's other books.
Well its fair to say I absolutely loved this. I was invested in this from the fist few pages, and loved Harper. The tension between the enemies to lovers was fun to read and I liked seeing it al unfold. Great spin on the celeb culture and world, recognising that celebs are human, with real lives and dramas and I like Harper as the conduit to realise that.
A brilliant rom com, Parker and Brian made me giggle plenty. Adorable.
I loved reading this, the characters were fun and relatable and the story was really enjoyable.
It'd the first I have read of the author and I really enjoyed her style of writing.
This has been a delightful escape to a wonderful setting. I have definitely been transported by this one.
The humour and banter between the two main characters had me sniggering into my book a few times.
I really enjoyed this enemies to lovers / 2nd chance romance. Harper and Ryan are brought back together after an internship turned romance 10 years ago ended with hurt feelings and of course a miscommunication to be rectified in present day.
The writing style is fun and pulls you in quickly which means that before you know it it’s way past time for bed but you’re invested and stay up to get through this HEA journalistic love story.
A great read. The characters were interesting and the story was intriguing. Will look out for more by this author.
Thanks so much to Katy Birchall, Hodder & Stoughton and NetGalley for the eARC. All opinions expressed are my own!
I really enjoyed this book. Harper and Ryan work at a new print publisher, whilst Ryan becomes the new features editor, Harper now works alongside her former flame, having interned together ten years prior. We follow the couple as they navigate their second chance and watch whether their careers stops them the second time around.
I really enjoyed how antagonistic their relationship was, the push and pull was addictive and I love the quick witted retorts and wild shenanigans they got up to in their field of work. I love how Ryan and Harper were complete opposites, complimenting each other. Ryan’s calm and collected demeanour vs. Harper’s chaotic nature. But what I truly adored was how obsessed Ryan was with Harper from the very beginning. The tension was palpable throughout the book and I felt like any scene with the duo would soon turn explosive. I loved what Harper stood for, fighting her way against a less than supportive boss and I love the way she stood up for herself in front of her toxic parents.
It was such a great read!
Harper Jenkins loves her friends, her career as a celebrity journalist, her busy city life - but she doesn't have time for hopeless romance. She's learned it's not worth the risk, the distraction.
Besides, she's busy enough - especially with the comeback of a major star to cover. But then, Ryan turns up in the office. Ryan, who she was an intern with over a decade ago before he stabbed her in the back and is probably ready to do it again if he gets the chance. But Harper isn't about to let this go - she'll have the last word in their rivalry.
But the more that life keeps pushing them together, Harper can't deny it's getting harder and harder to keep fighting with him, to keep hating him especially when he isn't even fighting back anymore.
"You light up every room you walk into. You somehow turn everything that's grey and orderly into a colourful, giant jumble. You're like this … chaotic shiny star."
If you go and grab a dictionary and look up 'romcom', you'll find a picture of this book. It's cosy, full of your favourite familiar tropes, hopelessly chaotic and a lot of fun. Some books try to make waves, try to always be doing something new - and some books just want to bring you something tried-and-true that you're going to love.
From the moment we meet Harper, we see underneath that icy exterior to a heart that loves to love but has been burned too many times. She dates, she appreciates a bit of romance but that's where it ends. And despite her professionalism and success, she's a total hot mess who I absolutely adored. She was a wonderful narrator as she guides us through life and reminisces about the past; she's funny, full of charm and sass but so very sweet. All of her friendships were a joy to read - I loved their playful banter but the clear care and connection between them.
And of course - there's Ryan. The tension between them is clear before we even know about their complicated history, from the moment they lock eyes again. We barely see him for quite a while, but as we slowly see more of him, it's clear there's something else under that charming smile and beautiful blue eyes.
Enemies-to-lovers is always a (not-so) guilty pleasure of mine, especially when it becomes a bit playful and silly along the way, and their playful competitiveness was absolutely charming and added to their dynamic. You know what's going to happen when you pick a book like this up - but the fun part is figuring out what on earth is going to happen along the way.
Harpers career was a focal point of this story - And there's clearly an important message about the responsibility that the media has when it comes to what and how they tell a story. I loved watching Harper work, how she truly cared about what she was reporting, how she saw the person behind the lens and wouldn't dream of saying something to hurt someone just because she could which is so common in a chronically online society. Watching her escapades was so much fun, full of really beautiful moments between the glitz, glamour and terrible bosses.
Riotously fun, sickly sweet and full of heart - this is the perfect book for a cosy reading session perfect for fans of The Hating Game or Love at First Fight.
Katy Birchall does it again - funny, sweet, romantic, this is a perfect slice of escapism. Full of excellent characters, great clothes, gorgeous settings - and I loved the sparkle of celebrity too. If you like The Hating Game and second chance romances then you’ll love this book.
Let The Feud Begin..
Celebrity editor Harper Jenkins knows her work, she’s successful and gets her story. When Ryan is unexpectedly hired as the new features editor Harper is aghast- she’s not about to forget the man who, years ago as an intern, had betrayed her so badly. Let the feud begin - but where exactly will it lead? Sassy, heartfelt, escapist and feel good Romcom with a deftly drawn cast and an edgy narrative laced with wit.
An 'enemies-to-lovers' romantic comedy, The Last Word, follows Harper Jenkins, a journalist who puts her career and also her heart on the line when her former work nemesis, Ryan is hired in her newsroom. If you like The Hating Game and Beach Reads, you would feel the same with this one.
I read this book in one sitting and I enjoyed the whole ride. It was full of playful & quirky banters which turned to an intense chemistry between those two. Harper is like very colourful I would say, she's highly-spirited, has an excellent social skills, while being a very disorganized person. She's just a mess to put it blantantly. On the other hand, Ryan is the total opposite. He's a bit reclusive, shy (but talkative to Harper) and structured. I would say he's a disciplined person, he has this businesslike flair when he's working. So when I saw how these two handle their bickerings, I cringed so hard it gave me second embarrassment. Mostly due to Harper's childish streak, and her profound ability to dig a deeper hole for herself. She has that talent where she made herself a joke, involuntarily of course. But I do get it why she acted like that, she had it tough with her family and the unfair treatment she had from her awful boss, she's bound to unleash her petty sides most of the time. It was satisfying to see but also could be handled a little bit cause it's so unprofessional. I sympathise with Ryan cause he had to deal with Harper's outburst most of the time, but I understood Harper' s situations and the reason why she acted like that. But I pity Ryan. He's just stuck and it's not really his fault. He has the patience of a monk to be honest, and I applaud that.
Regarding the plot and writing, I would say I loved it, immensely. I didn't put down the book cause it's verg easy to read and understand the messages. This book is not just about enemies-to-lovers, it's more than thay and I appreciated Katy's effort to deliver them. The plot taught not only about gaining confidence, but also having courage to chase your passion, to stand up for it, despite having people look down upon it. It's not easy to live a job that you've worked so hard to earn, but being trampled by your boss and being downgraded by your family. That's why I gave this book a chance. This book is more than just Harper showing her childish sides, she's a human. Of course she's bound to make mistakes. But I'm glad she learnt from it even after she went downhill with her job. And I'm glad Ryan was there for her despite everything that happened between them.
Overall, I think this book deserve a high rating from me, not because it is cliche or inspired like any other romcom books, but because this book tugged my heartstring with the plot and writing. Absolutely recommended for romcom lovers.
Thank you Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A very fun book. With plenty of laugh out loud moments to be hard. It has sooo many awkward moments you might just want to hide behind a pillow while reading it. The will they won't they storyline where we all know what will happen except for the main characters is always a fun one.
