Some friends in Phoenix have just bought a new place that has space for a garden. They're new to gardening and don't have a lot of spare time to acquire gardening know-how. This book's just what they need. It's a design book and a how-to book in one and, while Noelle Johnson includes photos and discussion of the sere grey cacti in sand school of arid gardening, she notes that some people want color and shape too. The photos are informative, documenting how this plant or tree can be incorporated into a plan. There is, of course, extensive discussion of water and how to apply it.
I think this is book would be a good investment for a gardener in the US Southwest. The principles will be useful for someone outside the USA, but of course the available plants will be different.
Reading this book was a bit dry (pun intended), but full of so much useful information. It delved into the technical, which doesn't make for engaging reading but will set the reader/gardener up for success. Living in a semi-arid/Mediterranean climate, it was gratifying to learn about plants and landscape ideas that would apply to the unique challenges of our area. I definitely feel more prepared as I plan our yard and meet the purposes of each area. I would have liked a more comprehensive plant guide as well as which are native to my area, but this book gave me a strong foundation and start to the process.

Dry Climate Gardening; Growing beautiful, sustainable gardens in low-water conditions by Noelle Johnson was a delightful read and I learned so very much! I was truly thankful to have gotten to read this before most people! I would like to purchase this one for my physical library!
I follow the AZ Plant Lady on IG and this is her first book. This book delivers great information about desert gardening, with beautiful photography, and includes sample yard plans. The only thing missing was the toxicity of plants to pets, but that is available online. Very well done and I will be buying a copy to use and/or gift.
I am not in the area this book was written for but I requested it as a gardener always looking for drought friendly plants especially as our climate changes. These plants won’t work in my region but it’s a well illustrated guide for its target audience.
Semi-useful for where I live (Colorado), although the book seemed to focus more on American Southwest desert-type of climates where it's usually hot, and not so much on cold-winter climates. Regardless, there was a lot of good information on low-water plants and gardening techniques and materials.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is ideal for me as I have a large garden in Andalucia. Plenty of advice and interesting tips to follow. Now it's time to put it all into practice. Thank you.
