I’m like the Little People, Big Dreams series. In only 30 pages the story covers Freddie Mercury’s childhood, forming Queen and performing. I thinks kids would be fascinated knowing that he had four more teeth than normal which he felt helped his singing range. It doesn’t shy away from including his life partner or saying he died from AIDS. The drawings are colorful and inviting. These books are designed for younger readers but I like that real photos and life information are included at the end that would interest older kids if they want to learn more.
I love Freddie Mercury and this book is an adorable way to introduce children to the icon. It briefly describes Freddie's life since it's childhood until his stardom. His lifestyle or the way he died are not the center of the history. He, as a person and an icon of music, is!
The drawing are simple but really beautiful and very accurate.

Book was well informative on the broad life of Freddie Mercury. A good information starting point for kids who want to learn more about the rock n' roll icon. This book is good as a part of the famous people series. If I had to criticize, I would mention that the book does gloss over him being gay as being 'With Jim forever', not as a married couple (though they were not married legally, they were common law husbands.)
I have always been a fan of this series of books, I buy them for my nieces and nephews to read. As always, the art is very simple, but cute with lots of bright colors that kids love. I really appreciate that Freddie Mercury's homosexuality and death from AIDS was not shied away from in this biography for kids.
This is one of many books from the Little People, Big Dreams Series and this one focuses on Freddie Mercury the lead singer of queen. It is a brief overview but tells a complete story with brilliant pictures. It is short into the point and I totally enjoyed it. I absolutely love these books for children and I love that they cover every aspect of history, celebrity, artist, the infamous ET see if they did a great respectful job for Freddie Mercury. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to engage theire child in reading and I think Freddie Mercury is a great place to start. There’s so much to be learned from one of these books and then Freddie Mercury we learned about his love for music and although they skirt heavy issues they definitely point out important parts of the legends life. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
I have several of these type of books for my Son and Daughter. It’s a great way to introduce my young kids to talented musicians from previous generations. Freddie Mercury is an excellent role model for my children due to his ability to fight against adversity to create his art and inspire the world.
The illustrations are engaging and help to showcase poignant moments in Freddie’s life. The book addresses the impact Freddie had on rock n roll and AIDS awareness. It is concisely written and is appropriate for all ages.
I love Freddie Mercury and this book is an absolutely adorable way to introduce young children to the icon. The book provides a simplified biography cataloging Freddie's journey from Zanzibar to India to London to stardom. The book references that Freddie was gay and died of AIDS (which is more than I can say about a certain academy award winning biopic). I loved the illustrations showing and liked that Roger, John, and Brian were all recognizable.
Freddie Mercury by Maria Isabel Sanchez is a brief, illustrated biography for kids to get to know Freddie Mercury. It includes the most important facts about his life and a short timeline with extra information at the end.
I'll definitely gift this book to any kid interested in music or to any kid who needs to be reminded of the importance of believing in themselves and doing their best.
Great short and informative read!
A brilliant addition to this series, of which I have read a fair few. It presents information about Freddie and his life in a very accessible way and I had no idea he had extra teeth which aided his singing! I particularly liked, given that it is a picture book aimed at a young audience, the book included his relationship and his untimely death due to AIDS. I shall look forward to reading more in the series.
Wow, I LOVE this book!!
This was such a good introduction to Freddie and done in such a great way for children to understand. The last part of the book has a little more information for older children which is great.
I honestly love these books!!
Some of my favorite books to read are from the Little People, Big Dreams series that quickly tells you the biography of someone famous in a way that kids will understand. The most recent one I just read was about Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen. It told about his life growing up, how he had more teeth than the average person but he thought that made him sing better (ie your differences may be what helps make you successful!) and how he was famous with Queen and stopped touring once he found out he had AIDS. At the end of the book there is a timeline of his life with real photos and I just think these little books are so great to help little kids learn more about some famous figures!
I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.
It always amazes me how much there is to learn in children's biography books. I didn't know that Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar or what he thought about his teeth. It's really cool to get to teach kids about famous people and their lives in such an informative and engaging way!
I absolutely LOVE this childrens' biography series and I was so excited to see a book about Freddie Mercury! Many children know at least the song We Will Rock You so it is great to get to know the singer behind this and his journey. It's an excellent story that features diverse characters in a way children can relate to. The illustrations are beautiful and engaging to the eye. Great job, I can't wait to purchase this for my classroom library!!
With exquisitely aesthetic illustrations by Ruby Taylor, "Freddie Mercury" by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, is a breezy introduction to the melodies and magic of one of the greatest ever legends to have graced the domain of rock music. The book is an enticing appetiser to the musically minded young teen who is beginning his/her journey into the world of music. Beginning with the birth of Freddie Mercury as Farrokh Bulsara in a Parsi family, on a tiny island in Zanzibar, Vegara traces the journey of an enigmatic and gifted child from Zanzibar to India before finally settling in the hustle and bustle of London. A London, which during those times was the throbbing, beating and pulsing vein of a myriad notes and genres.
Farrokh studied graphic design and sold secondhand clothes in London before meeting a guitarist named Brian May and Roger Taylor, a drummer and a vocalist. Part of a struggling band called Smile, May and Taylor were looking for a singer and boy, could this young seller of secondhand clothes sing! Very soon, the band was complete with the arrival of John Deacon on the bass. Farrokh convinced his mates to rename the band Queen and called himself Freddie Mercury. The rest as they say is history!
The book also deals in a very sensible and poignant manner on Freddie contracting AIDS before finally succumbing to it. A Freddie Mercury biography reference rounds off a marvelous endeavour!
"Freddie Mercury" - the show will always go on!
Freddie Mercury by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is published by Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books and will be available on sale from the 7th of February 2023
Thank You Net Galley for the Advance Reviewer Copy!
I really enjoyed this book about Freddie Mercury and Queen. The story was told in a way that children would enjoy, but was full of actual facts about Freddie and Queen. The combination of the story with the great illustrations made Freddie come to life.
The most important part of this story is the amazing talent that Freddie and Queen shared with the world. The joy that their music brought to so many people and still does. This should inspire parents and kids alike.
The book also brought to light so many interesting topics - special gifts, extra teeth, different ways children get educated, immigration to a safe country. Parents can discuss any of these topics with their children or just answer questions that their children might have.
The book covers that Freddie once had a girlfriend and then met Jim, who was his boyfriend. The books covers that Freddie had AIDS and eventually got so sick he could not perform and eventually died..
The information at the end showing real life photographs of Freddie and the band are so fun for adults and children.
It would be great if anyone reading this book to a child would play them a Queen song that they might enjoy after they read them the book. Then they can discuss how the legacy of a person can live on after they are gone from this world.
As someone who is a huge fan of Queen and Freddie Mercury this was a fantastic tribute to him and the band! This book is extremely child friendly so readily accessible for the education of any age group and audience. The book was such a quick read but packed with enough knowledge and amazing illustrations to learn about the subject of the book in this case Freddie and the band. It brought to light the topic of AIDS which is extremely important to educate the target audience of children and make them aware of the seriousness without going into too much detail to scare them. It also highlights that Freddie once had a girlfriend and then met Jim who was his boyfriend. This leaves room for parents to further educate their child(ren) if they decide and answer any questions they may have. I especially loved the information at the end showing real life photographs of Freddie and the band as well as the more in depth knowledge surrounding his life, death and legacy. The book overall highlighted how important Freddie Mercury was as a person as well as Queen and the lasting impact himself and they have had on past and current generations and those to come!
Freddie Mercury is beloved worldwide as the lead singer of Queen. For me personally, born within a year of his passing, Queen's music is a large part of the anthem of my childhood.
I read through this book and loved the way that Freddie's life has been summarised, including how they referenced both of his important relationships. I then read the book to my children who really engaged with the images and asked a lot of questions about Queen, Freddie Mercury and AIDs.
I highly recommend this book as a child friendly way to share information on the great performer that was Freddie Mercury and keep his legacy alive!
I love these books! If you haven’t seen Bohemin Rhapsody the movie it is amazing. I love the illustrations in this book and the straightforward writing. I think it’s easy for a child to understand and a great introductory point to a legendary musician! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free preview in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great book in the Little People Big Dreams series. This provides nice background information on the star while also touching some complex issues in a very age appropriate way. Would recommend for any classroom working on biographies.
I am a huge fan of Queen and Freddie - my dad played their music, one of the many great bands he introduced into my life.
Though each band member contributed music, Freddie stood out. His iconic personality just could not be contained.
This is a great introduction with many complex topics, like AIDS. Done with lovely illustrations and easy concepts. Well done!
