I really enjoyed this book. Great story and characters. 5*.
The Strangers Captive by Leliz Andiz published December 2023. When magaldenia is sent to prison for the murder of her husband. Prison guard Kyle decides to kidnap her during a medical trip. The author takes a headline prison guard prisoner case and makes it her own. This story is told in snapshots of their lives and adventure.
The book The Stranger's Captive did not interested me at all. The plot has potential but the all characters were flat. I read it till the end because I don't like to give up a book in the middle. I spotted some grammatical and spelling errors: orange power instead of orange powder.
Oh. This was juicy and exciting. I think I've never heard of such a plot before so this actually caught my attention.
I did enjoy this one. A good break from the last few awful thrillers I've read last week. First time from this author and will definitely be watching more of their works.
A decent thriller with an awesome twist.
Thanks to Teal Moon and Netgalley for the advanced copy!
This feels like a really short book, with not really enough time for the characters to fully form.
It's one of those books that does nicely to entertain for a few hours, but left no lasting impression.
A lot happens in a short space of time, and some of it felt over the top.
But you'd expect that from a book that starts with a prison break.
I couldn’t get into this book, I didn’t particularly like the characters which is not a deal breaker for me but I just didn’t care what happened to them. I found myself bored with the storyline.
After a while I decided this book wasn’t going to take my interest so it’s a DNF from me. I can see how others will be intrigued and enjoy this so for fairness I am giving this 2.5 rounded up to 3.
Thank you for an arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Well this was one ride i wont forget. Lots of twists and i Definetely recommend.

I really enjoyed this book and thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read it.
The story follows two main characters. Magdalena who’s a young woman living in the city who day dreams about building a life with someone and that someone just happens to show up on a rainy day sweeping her off her wet feet. The other is a reclusive, just existing CO-Officer of the jail in NYC named Kyle. Their lives become intertwined when Magdalena ends up in jail awaiting trial for the murder of her husband and Kyle falls for the beauty and a promise of a new life for himself if he breaks her out of jail.
The story alternates between the POV of Magdalena and Kyle before and after the kidnapping and navigating their journey on the run. It tells the story of how Magdalena’s married brought her to prison and how lonely Kyles life was. I love how we got the perspective from both making the story more interesting.
The whole book is a total ride. It was rather short but everything tied together nicely and the twists were unbelievable (in a good way) and kept coming all way up until the end.
Bravo!
Normally when a book is on the short side it fails to fully develop the characters so that you're completely invested in them. However, this one still managed to give the backstory with the two main characters while also keeping you in suspense in the present. I still can't comprehend how this author managed to tell the story in about half the amount of pages as the average thriller but it worked perfectly. This one is part domestic thriller, part psychological thriller and highly entertaining. An excellent take on when a corrections officer and an inmate escape, leaving authorities questioning what actually transpired. I definitely recommend this one. Four Stars.
Thank you Netgalley and Teal Moon for this ARC.
Kyle is one of the two prison guards in charge of transporting inmate Magdalena (Magda) who is on trial for the murder of her husband. Things go sideways when Kyle kidnaps Magda and takes her to an underground bunker. They are to stay safe in the bunker until they are in the clear. Then they will move to an abandoned house. He keeps saying he did this for her and she’s free. But with a lock on the door to the bunker and the date of them leaving the bunker coming and going, Magda wonders how free she really is. When the truth is revealed why Kyle really kidnapped Magda, there’s no turning back.
I liked that we get both Kyle and Magda’s perspectives in the book and the pacing was great. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what was gonna happen next but the twist wasn’t as great as I hoped it would be.
The Stranger’s Captive is available now.
Thank you netgalley and tealmoon for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Kyle is a prison guard in NY and he's been planning something and today is the day. Magda is an inmate awaiting trial for the murder of her husband. Kyle isn't doing it because he thinks she's innocent. In fact, we have no idea why Kyle is doing this!
Magda is confused and scared. She didn't ask for this and doesn't want to be stuck on the run with this man she doesn't know. He takes her to a bunker where he woos her with Spam and the promise of a shower with men's deodorant soap. How can she resist?
They're staying in the bunker until things cool down because obviously this is a huge news story in the country. As they're there, they bond in their own way and we learn more about them. We learn the story of Magda's marriage and we learn why Kyle is insecure and tends to think he's the hero in his own story.
When it is finally revealed why he's taken her, things get even messier and they may not all make it back alive.
This was unique, clever, and wildly interesting! It's timely because we've had stories in the news these past few years of COs falling in love with or grooming inmates and getting them out. It was interesting to sort of get inside the mind of someone like that, as the story was told in the first person by both Kyle and Magda at different points.
I would have liked to have connected with the characters a bit more, but it was a nice quick read so I'm not sure I would trade the perfect length for too much character development.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review! This is definitely worth the read.
