I LOVE Catherine Rayner's work both on her own and when teamed with other authors. Julia Donaldson is of course a high flyer in children's literature. Together they have created another smashing book for young children with a great message. The fun and lovable Bowerbird is a treat

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

The Bowerbird is such a beautiful illustrated story with a great lesson to learn inside. A bird really wants to find a bride and places a pretty purple flower outside his bower. The first bird he meets isn't satisfied with his efforts and demands more and more from him. He gets tricked by a crow and goes home sad and deflated bit then meets the perfect bird for him who loves him just the way he is and isn't interested in material possessions. This book teaches children about morals and not being taken advantage of and being who they are no matter what they have to offer, and that materialistic things shouldn't matter if someone really loves you. The illustrations are just beautiful and I'd love an art print of the final page of the book it's just so sweet!

This beautiful tale of how a bowerbird attracts a mate is the perfect mix of fiction and non-fiction and another useful teaching tool for nature and habitats. Told in Julia Donaldson's famously renowned rhyme, it is a story full of hope and heart.

Bert wants to find love and hopes that his carefully constructed bower will attract the bowerbird of his dreams. But when Nanette arrives, she's not impressed. Will Bert's hard work and presents win her over in the end or is she not the right bird for Bert after all?

Bert is a gorgeously endearing character who is bound to win over the hearts of young readers. He may not have the best luck but his efforts and determination will make you root for a happy ending. The cumulative text is warm and fun and catchy, encouraging little ones to join in with the story and become familiar with rhythm and rhyme. The illustrations by Catherine Rayner are stunning, very different in style to the illustrators who usually work alongside Julia Donaldson and capture Bert's quest with as much warmth as the text.

The Bowerbird is another triumph for double act Julia Donaldson and Catherine Rayner. It's a sweet story about bowerbird Bert who is trying to woo a wife. He goes to great lengths to make another bird happy, but is she really the one? Will Bert find his true love? Stunningly illustrated in Catherine's original, warm and wonderful style.

It almost feels too much to say
That Donaldson is here to stay,
Again, she's written a great book
That Rayner's given a lovely look.

Each page is bright and colourful
With charm and wit a plentiful,
The tone is sweet and neatly clear
Written out for all to hear.

It takes an unknown animal
And makes it so relatable,
By giving him that age-old want-
A friend, a love, a confidant.

He tries so hard to please someone
But cannot help but be outdone,
Until, instead, he's chance to find
A bird with whom he's so aligned.

To bring this love into his bower
All it took was a common flower,
Thus, a moral of this story
Be proud of one's own territory.

Do not steal or lie or cheat
Watch out for those full of conceit,
Wait your turn, you never know
Who'll join with you and help you grow.

Another gem of a story from Julia Donaldson. Lovely rhythm and rhyme in this story of the bower bird who is trying to attract a mate by decorating his bower he has built with objects. It is never enough for the bird hewants to wed so he fetches more and more objects until another bower bird suggests he needs to find a ring. When he returns he gets a surprise. A really enjoyable story for the young and los of age groups will enjoy this and it will spark lots of discussion about the choices made and the ending

Book Review

A very sweet short story book with an important message contained. This is an absolutely fantastic story for children of all ages to help teach them that they don't have to give gifts to be special to someone. I believe it also has the hidden moral to be careful who you trust!! The story is rhyming and I had loads of fun reading it myself as a 36 year old and then my 10 year old son also enjoyed reading it. I also read it to my 5 year old twins who absolutely loved the bright and fun illustrations which were very attractive to the eye. The story was quite sweet but sad but with a lovely ending!! My heart went out to the poor bowerbird and I was so pleased by the lovely ending. I loved reading all the lists out of what he had collected and really did have lots of fun reading this book alone and to the kids!! A lovely children's book and I am looking forward to reading more children's books by this author myself and to the children!!!

This latest book by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Catherine Rayner is a joy from start to finish ; comedic , entertaining but also builds up a huge sense of warmth and care towards the Bower bIrd. The young Bower bird is trying to attract a partner into his nest by building up a collect.ion of stolen items ; unfortunately the attention of his desires is fickle and not satisfied and with a twist of fate his path takes a new course. As ever Julia Donaldson’s prose is an absolute delight - perfect for all young readers and parents and careers too. Wonderful vocabulary and lovely big hearted tale. Catherine Rayner’s bring a true delight - adding to the humour and also the emotions.
A wonderful book which I will fully recommend to teachers in KS1 as well as family and friends. Magical and moving
