A book that makes you feel like you are right there in the action with a multitude of storylines and the characters are brilliantly scripted. A hard one to put down!
World War One drama, fourth in this series. Failed to keep me interested, characters bland and one dimensional.
This one went into my did-not-finish pile. I did not care for any of the characters so ¼ of the way in, I gave up. As I went to leave this feedback, I realized it was book 4 in a series so perhaps that is why I did not feel a connection to any of the characters.
This is the first book that I have read by this author, it was okay, I can't say much more. The characters didnt particularly interest me, the story had quite a lot of dialogue but not much substance. Sorry not a book I can rave about
The descriptions of the beauty of the land were very enjoyable reading. The story, however, not so much. The only likeable person was Doro. The book was very depressing, and the ending was so abrupt.

I did finish this but was so relieved when I did as it just did not do anything for me. The story is essentially that of one woman reliving her life through memories, interspersed with current family matters - running the estate and factory now that she's widowed, worrying about son Roderick just signed up to serve in WWI, worrying about tom-boy daughter who is not behaving as a young lady should and worrying about niece Dorothea married to a German and currently held as an 'alien' at the family home. It's a rather bland story of the matriarch facing great social change and war but without depth of character or anything new to the story. Think Downton Abbey on Valium. Not badly written or anything, just not a story with which I engaged. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
When I finished the book I realised it had been the fourth in a series but had enjoyed this title without reading the other three. I was drawn to it as I enjoy reading WW1 and WW2 fiction so had perhaps passed over the other titles as they were not set in these eras.
The characters were likeable and easy to relate too. The storyline was strong and kept the reader interested. The book was easy to read and I finished it in 24 hours. My only disappointment was the ending which came suddenly and didn't seem to make any sense. I assume there will be another to follow on which may shed more light to the ending.
