Overall, an enjoyable cozy. Felicity, an owner of a craft chocolate business and amateur, detective is asked to a mysterious tea. The next day the host of the event is found murdered and a friend is a prime suspect. Felicity is determined to help. It becomes all the more vital for her to discover what is going on when a modern-day Moriarity appears and challenges Felicity with clues to the next victim. If she doesn't figure it out quickly, her nearest and dearest may be the ones who suffer...
There are plenty of twists in this story and a thriller of an ending. I liked Felicity. The descriptions of chocolate were, of course, delectable. The story meandered at times and I'm not thrilled by a love-triangle.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review.
I have enjoyed the other mysteries in this series but this one suffered with the dreaded love triangle and over-inflated sense of self of the main character. I get that she's made a name for herself solving a few crimes but the people asking for autographs, wanting to paint her, everyone being in love with her, etc. is a little annoying. This story dragged for me, maybe because the love triangle is, and I felt that it didn't flow because of it. I had hoped it would have been resolved by now but it seems it will be dragged out for at least another book. I liked the tie-in with the Sherlock Holmes story but I might need to take a break from this series.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The author managed to keep my interest right up to the last page. She also managed to keep me guessing, as to who the killer was.
I will read her other books.
This is a series! I'm excited to go back and read the first four. I enjoyed every minute of this and learned a great deal about chocolate. Amber Royer integrated the chocolate with the story, making it effortless and interesting.
Delving into the life of an artsy person in Galveston, TX, was fascinating. I felt very comfortable and felt a kinship with this chocolate shop. There was a cat and a dog, murders, and friends. Being transported to another world, a quaint little town with likable people, except for the murder part, was so refreshing and easy.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun, cozy mystery with just a little bit more.
Chocolate, a little murder what more could you ask. This was a quick, fun book. You learn a bit about making chocolate which I thought was pretty cool.
This was my introduction to the series, having missed the previous books. I will definitely rectify that and pick up the previous books.
A great premise with interesting characters and a whodunit that was well written, well paced and kept me guessing.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
The author appears to have done a lot of research into chocolate making. The murder kept me guessing. It will be interesting to read more by this author.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of A STUDY IN CHOCOLATE (Book 5 of the Bean to Bar Mysteries), by Amber Royer, in exchange for an honest review. Felicity Koerber is happy; her shop is doing well, and they're even expanding to add a demonstration area. When Felicity attends a luncheon hosted by a mysterious new resident of Galveston, the host offers to paint Felicity in chocolate. Intriguing. Then the man is murdered in a way that implicates one of Felicity's friends. Horrifying. Finally, the real murderer has challenged Felicity to a game. If Felicity cannot stop the murderer, then the next target is one of Felicity's friends. Terrifying. Felicity has always found the murder fan traffic at her shop to be gruesome. How much worse is it to find out your number one fan is a psychopath who wants to challenge you to a real-life game of Clue?
I recommend this book to fans of the series. I recommend the series to fans of cozy murder mysteries featuring island life, candy shops, chocolate, and adorable pets.

Felicity is an ex physical trainer now makes chocolate and co owns a shop with her love interest Logan. When she is invited to a dinner at the mansion of an artist. After the party she receives a message that she has a short time to save his life. I found It very well written and the characters and locations were described nicely. It held my interest and I could not figure out the villain. In between all this Felicity has to decide whether she will go back to her ex Arlo or continue with Logan. I will definitely be reading the previous books in the series as they are mentioned a lot in this book, just to catch up. I recommend this book to any cozy mystery reader you will not be disappointed.
Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The chocolate lover in me enjoyed learning more about that topic. But overall the story didn't hold me. Normally, I would have just set the book aside, but it wasn't so bad that I couldn't finish it. While listed as a stand alone, it may have been better if I had read the prior books.
A Study in Chocolate is the 5th in the Bean to Bar cozy mystery series. Our main character, Felicity, owns a craft chocolate shop where she makes and sells craft chocolate.
As happens in a cozy mystery, the main character becomes involved in a murder investigation. This time the murderer has made it personal, Felicity needs to figure out who the murderer is and stop them before they commit their next murder because it might be someone she cares about.
You'll enjoy this story if you like:
🍫Chocolate
🍫Furry companions 🐕🐈🐇
🍫A fun cast of supporting characters
🍫Lots of red herrings
🍫An exciting mystery to solve
If you have read the others in the series, you will probably enjoy this one. I had not read the previous books in the series. You could read as a stand-alone. I struggled at times though, because there was so much that happened in the previous books that carried into this one and at times I felt like I was missing something.
What I enjoy about a cozy mystery is that there might be a romance or a budding romance, but it's usually fairly closed door. Our main character has two potential love interests and she has a decision to make. She's told them both that she will have a decision by her best friends wedding. But I didn't particularly enjoy the two love interest part in this cozy mystery. It just seemed a bit distracting to the story.
But, overall this story kept my interest and was an enjoyable read.
A Study in Chocolate by Amber Royer is the fifth book in the Bean to Bar Mysteries series following Felicity, Arlo and Logan on yet another murder case after a tea party. The killer plays a puzzle with Felicity basing their crimes on the Sherlock Holmes novels and getting Felicity to suspect and confront all of her 'friends'. This latest murder mystery is all on top of the expansion and ongoing business of Greetings and Felicitations, with the introduction of some new pets and characters and being reunited with others such as Knightley, Felicity's pet rabbit. Will Felicity work out who the murderer is and will she manage to save Logan?
I have to say it is an absolute pleasure and delight to be back on Galveston Island following Felicity and her friends on their adventures. This is something I have very much missed after not reading the previous two novels in this collection. It is great to hear Felicity's business is going strong and lovely how the author incorporates chocolate in this series of books. The idea of Felicity's craft chocolates is just lovely but such a shame that we can't visit Felicity ourselves. We also continue to enjoy the romantic themes of Felicity's adventures whilst she decides whether to pursue a relationship with Logan or Arlo. As always, this is an extremely gripping book which just got me more and more excited as it went on.
The one thing I was not keen of with this book is some of the long chapters. Yes, this allowed us to get into the story more and feel more part of Felicity's adventures and life. However, not only can the longer chapters make it harder to read, but if the chapters were shorter it would help to pick up the pace of the story which would make it more exciting and have the reader on the edge of their seats even more so than the story already does. I would not take this as a large problem because the book is beautifully and artistically put together.
Altogether, I rate this book 4 stars because it really is a great story and a great adventure combining everything I personally enjoy, romance, thriller, murder mystery, chocolate and so much more. I very much look forward to the next of Felicity's adventures in book 6 where I also hope to find out whether Felicity picks Logan or Arlo to be her boyfriend. Thank you very much to NetGalley and Books Go Social for providing me with an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book in return for an honest book review.
t’s hard to imagine dying as a pawn in a twisted game designed by a bookworm who does needlecraft. 58%
When the tables are turned and Felicity finds herself protecting her former bodyguard will she be as successful as he was in the past? Challenged by her own personal Moriarty to keep Logan alive the stakes have never been higher for our chocolatier. A very intriguing cozy by a new to me author and a must read for a cozy fan!
I loved the name of this book and this is what drew me to read it. And it was such a fun book to read. From the chocolate to the setting to the story and the murder of course. This has it all and is exactly what you want from a cosy murder mystery.
Felicity is a great character and Satchmo the retired police dog was a great addition to the story. The miter kept me on my toes and provided me with all the clues so I could try and solve it (as I do).
This is a quirky, fun, intriguing, easy to read and best of all fun and entertaining not to mention delicious (who doesn't like chocolate. A great read.
I did not finish this book.
From the beginning I felt lost, the writing was choppy and I struggled to get through the first couple of chapters.
I will not be continuing with this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
A Study in Chocolate by Amber Royer was not an enjoyable story to read. It is the fifth a Bean to Bar Mystery and I recommend reading the series in order. There are numerous mentions to the past murders that Felicity helped solve. My trouble with the story began with the first chapter. I had trouble with the writing style. The story is told in the first person. Felicity’s thoughts seemed to tumble around from subject to subject. The descriptions are detailed (which slows down the pacing). The mystery was interesting. The killer seems to be a fan of Sherlock Holmes. A Study in Scarlet is at the center of the puzzle. The mystery was higgledly piggledy. I wish the whodunit had been more of a challenge to solve. The whodunit can be cracked before the murder takes place. Felicity also has two love interests (my biggest pet peeve). She cannot decide between her two beaus. Felicity told the gentlemen that she will make a choice before her friend’s wedding. It does not help that both men are going to be groomsmen. Felicity with help from her investor has purchased the shop next door. This will allow customers to view how chocolates are created (the process from start to finish). I am surprised that a small chocolate shop owner would invest money in such an endeavor. I could see allowing customers to view the dipping of chocolates or the making of fudge at the front of the shop but not utilizing a whole shop for the purpose. Especially with the shop being on an island where your income relies on tourists. My favorite character was Satchmo, the retired police dog who is now a therapy dog. I did enjoy the lushing descriptions of the chocolates (highlight of the book). While A Study in Chocolate was not for me, I suggest you download a sample so you can judge it for yourself. A Study in Chocolate is a molten mystery with a private party, a cat companion, pocketed chocolates, a book clue, a paramour predicament, and a scarlet solution.
I struggled getting into this book it was a difficult to get into the story. It felt very forced and every detail overly explained. I did finish the book but will not continue with the series. The mystery was okay but quick to figure out.

This is my first book by Amber Royer. In the first few chapters I thought I might be my last as well, because the writing style was rather abrupt. The descriptions of people being introduced didn’t really strike me in a positive manner. But I kept on reading and the writing style either grew on me or smoothed out, drawing me into the story.
Felicity is a chocolate maker who has also solved murders. It sounds like the solving was accidental. There certainly was a great deal of stumbling around and plenty of suspects that didn’t pan out. I was fairly certain of the murderer early on. I proved accurate although I didn’t know all the reasons behind the actions.
This is the fifth book in the series, but the author provides quite a bit of backstory so this one could be read on its own.
Felicity has two beaus that she is supposed to decide between. I was a bit disappointed that there was no resolution to this question since there was a clear deadline for the decision.
I enjoyed the story but I am on the fence about whether I will continue on with the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this book.
Galveston bean-to-bar chocolate shop owner Felicity Koerber is intrigued to get an invitation to tea by the mysterious new owner of the historic Wobble House. She meets eccentric art collector Mitch who asks Felicity to pose for a portrait done with chocolate. But the next day, Mitch is killed shortly after Felicity gets a text message challenging her to stop the crime. Failing that, the Sherlock Holmes-obsessed killer challenges Felicity to solve the murder or her business partner/love interest Logan will be killed.
With the help of Logan, her ex-boyfriend cop Arlo & her other friends, Felicity races against the clock to find the killer's ID and motives.
This was another enjoyable book in the Bean-to-Bar mystery series.
I received a digital ARC from Netgalley and Golden Tip Press. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this book! It was a fun cozy mystery with great descriptions, especially when talking about the chocolates. The mystery was good with enough of a side plot to keep me interested. I could have done without the love triangle though, but that’s just not something I enjoy in my reading in general.
