Karin Slaughter always manages to pack a punch with her books. This was a real gritty dramatic read which I struggled to put down. So many believable characters with some great twists along the way and a fantastic unexpected ending which i absolutely loved. Would totally recommend this to anyone who loves a gripping crime drama. This author never fails to disappoint with a wholesome storyline.
Thanks to HarperCollins and NetGalley for allowing me an advanced copy to read in exchange for an open and honest review. As always, my reviews will also be posted on Amazon, Goodreads and Waterstones and interaction on Facebook and instagram where possible.
A new Karin Slaughter is always a joy, and Will is a fabulous protagonist. His relationships with Sara and Faith are strong and provide a safe place for him to fall. Investigating a series of horrible rapes and a truly disgusting group of men isn't easy, but this trio make it seem so, even if Sara has to relive her own awful experience.
The shocking twist about the leader of this vile cadre was one I absolutely did not see coming. Brilliant, gripping crime writing.
This may well be the 11th book in the series but I know that I haven't read them all, did this matter - NO! Brilliantly written, loved every minute of it - I couldn't read it fast enough as I needed to get to the end. Had me gripped from the start - I now need to go back and read all of the others as it was just unputdownable.
As yet another stunning book by Karin Slaughter with the characters that we have grown to love. This is a can’t miss in the series and as always I am left on the edge of my seat wanting more.
I'm a long-time Karin Slaughter fan and this one doesn't disappoint (does she ever?). As usual, it's gripping, with a really engaging plot, moving, and with characters you care about. Karin is a bit of a genius, but you probably already knew that
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
When a young woman is raped and then fatally wounded, Dr Sara Linton testifies in court. A chance encounter in the bathroom, with the accused’s mother sends Sara back 15 years. Back to when she herself was raped-but what is the link to the current case?
Will, Sara and Will’s partner Faith investigate.
Love this series, and this book was fantastic. I really enjoyed the look back at Sara’s life as a resident and then the flash forward to current day. As always the banter between Faith and Will, his awkwardness and both their fear of their boss Amanda made this a joy to read.
A gripping book, with some very satisfying twists and turns. The story is very dark in places and many of the characters are almost unbelievably awful, but Will and Sara are very appealing characters, and the ending of the book is completely satisfying. Definitely one I will recommend.
If you've enjoyed the Will Trent series, then this one will not disappoint.
My advice: Block out your time. Tell the fam that they're on their own for dinner. Call in sick. Do whatever you need to do so that you won't be interrupted. (I certainly wish I'd done this...)
This novel is a thrill ride. It's dark. If you've read this far in the series, you know that Karin Slaughter does not shrink from the hard subjects - rape, stalking, domestic abuse, drugs - and this novel is no exception. The novel starts off with a woman driving into an ambulance in the ER bay and as the ER team, including Sara, begin to work to save her life, it becomes apparent that she was viciously attacked. On her way to the OR, she whispers to Sara that she thinks she was drugged and raped. Fast forward a few years and Sara is now testifying about that evening and her assessment that the spoiled son of a prominent family is responsible. Then just after her testimony, the boy's mother makes a stunning statement that leads Sara to believe that her rape, 15 years before, is somehow related.
The novel brings the past - both Sara's and Will's - into the present. While they are planning their upcoming wedding, they are also investigating the crime and suddenly it becomes apparent that there is more involved. More conspirators. More crimes. Stretching back into the past. Slaughter incorporates themes about wielding power and violence against women in all its terrible forms. White male supremacy. Violence against children and women, the powerless versus the wealthy, nearly omnipotent.
Slaughter gives us the expected - a great cast of characters working diligently to solve a horrible crime - and the unexpected. And nope, I'm not saying more. Just know that you will suspect some of this, but I doubt you'll suspect *all* of it. It's a ride and you'll want to strap in and not go anywhere until it's done.
Thanks to netgalley and Harper Collins for this ARC!!
Quotes I liked (and please understand that this is from the ARC - your quotes may differ):

There's no right or wrong here. There's only what you can live with. All you have to know is that I've got you either way.
Change tells you who you really are.
"...The world's particularly down on white men lately. Hell of a time."
"Controlling women's bodies along with the entire federal government and the federal judiciary isn't enough?"
Faith thought of her children again, how her biggest worry with Jeremy was that he would fall in love with a girl who broke his heart and her biggest fear with Emma was that she would fall in love with a man who broke her bones.
One of you will spend the rest of your life trying to forget it. The other will spend the rest of his life deriving pleasure from the memory.
Domestic violence was one of the most complicated crimes - part assault, part coercive control, part brainwashing, part false imprisonment.
You don't change the job. The job changes you.
Another incredible instalment in the Will Trent series. I just love these characters, and this one felt so emotional and gut-wrenching as we revisit Sara’s past.
As always, I loved the way Karin Slaughter weaved the tale, and the way she scattered the disclosures and twists throughout to keep me both guessing and wanting to read just one more page. It was also a fantastic ending and one that had me racing through the final part.
I can’t say much more without giving anything away, but long standing fans will not be disappointed. (And if you’ve not read this series before, you are in for a treat as well!)
This is a very good read. It is a complex and scary thriller which moves along quickly, although there was one bit of reflection on the details which i found rather long - but necessary. I felt that i was engaged with the main characters and repelled by the “Club”
The set up scenes intended to gather evidence are very tense and i was rooting for the ‘good guys”
Thoroughly recommended
“Make a list of everything that terrifies you. That’s me.”
“You can leave through the door, or I can throw you from the window.”
“My body would break before the glass does.”
“Don’t threaten me with a good time.”
I love reading Karin Slaughter books because they are fast paced and dark. This book was no exception!
I loved the romance of Will and Sara! I need to play catch up with the series.
Also, Will reminded me of Robert Hunter from Chris Carter’s books and I loved it!
This book won’t be for everyone one as it has graphic depictions of Rape.
This is an excellent addition to the Will Trent / Sara Linton series. Sara is testifying in a civil rape case against very rich, powerful doctors who she trained with. The mother of the accused makes some veiled comments which get Sara suspicious about wider cases and her own past. Faith and Will get involved gathering evidence while pretending to be working with the fraud squad. There is a great piece around Faith’s son who becomes involved in investigating and, to her horror, expresses an interest in law enforcement as a career. While it’s hard to credit such organised depravity as this case involves, I was completely involved in the story. I do not think this book would be as good if you haven’t read the series before this as there are many references to the events of previous books. I have always liked the three main characters and this book builds their stories further. Highly recommended. Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC.
My Rating: 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ticked most of the boxes ALMOST A 5!!!
This is the 11th book in the Will Trent series, and truthfully I wouldn’t read them out of order… I mean you could but this one has A LOT of backstory so you might get lost.
Fifteen years ago Sara Linton’s life changed forever… after a rare night out ends in a violent attack that ripped her world to pieces. Since then Sara, rebuilt her life completely and has suffered a number of life’s tragedies along the way but she is a successful doctor and has a loving family, and engaged to the man she loves and has finally left the past behind her.
Until one night, she is on call in the ER and a young woman comes in who has been brutally attacked. As the investigation progresses with none other than GBI Special Agent Will Trent, Sara’s fiancee. The similarities to Sara’s attack from 15 years ago begin to emerge and it seems that the past is going to be dug up whether Sara likes it or not…
So… the long awaited 11th book in the Will Trent series is finally here … and I enjoyed the absolute heck out of it. Is it long winded and very much the usual Slaughter scenic route… YES absolutely but what did you expect. The page length was considerably shorter than some of her other books and that is saying something when this is 432 pages on kindle.
BUT I enjoyed it… I really thought the medical background (that seems very well researched and accurate) was a plus.. some people might not like that but I feel like it added to the atmosphere of who Sara is and how she approaches situations. It also teaches the reader something and I am always up for that. I found it interesting how the medical aspect was interlaced with the case.
BIG TRIGGER warnings in this one with all KS books on rape. I cannot think of a KS book I have read that doesn’t have multiple rapes in it and this one is no different. So know yourself when you go into this. There are brutal descriptions and retellings of the attack and the injuries to the victims. Having said that I know what KS is like and I was expecting it and to be honest it was tamer than some of her Grant County books.. some of those I put down and stared at a wall for a day and half wondering what to do with my life…
I really love that Faith is back and shes as much of a smart ass as ever. I really enjoyed the addition of her son Jeremy he has grown up so much since book one and it was really good to see his involvement in the case. Of course the poison tongued Amanda is back and I love her and her ‘old gals’ who are just serious badasses!!
Sara and Will’s relationship is so cute and I seriously love them together. Will is a huge sweetie and he just adores Sara and you can read that right there in a black and white but likewise Sara thinks Will is the sun… that does not mean anything or everything is smooth sailing. I mean where would the fun be in that 🤣
I have to say I was confused AF at one point… in the beginning of the books it starts out that Will and Sara haven’t seen each other in two months and it seems like they aren’t together… but they were together in the last book so I was totally confused … but after a million page prologue… it started chapter 1 at three years later and they are engaged. There is no explanation of why they weren’t together or hadn’t seen each other in so long… I was confused and I kept thinking it would be explained but I didn’t see where it did. It didn’t ruin the story but it seemed weird.
I do really like this series… I know some of KS standalone’s or other books (like Pieces of Her) are a bit meh…but her series are solid. There is a lot of brutal attacks and winding descriptions… I feel like the page length was down this time due to less description on the actual Georgia scenery and I mean thats fair given that we have read at least 10 books in this series and also the Grant County series is also set in Georgia.
There is a twist at the end… and I actually wasn’t expecting it… I mean I can see how it was leading up to it… and I did at one point go… hmm maybe… but it was tricky enough that it got me and I was pleasantly surprised by the twist and the outcome.
Overall: do I recommend… yes if you are a fan of this series and KS writing style then definitely. I don’t recommend you jump in at book 11 - while I think there is enough backstory for it to be read as a standalone… I just feel like you need to have the full experience. This is a really good series and I believe best enjoyed in its entirety… and I am talking about Grant County first then Will Trent… its a HUGE commitment though so… if you say Karly NO I am starting right here right now… you can’t tell me what to do…
That is fine… roll the dice and you do you… but if you finish it and go…damn I wish I listened to Karly and started from the start… then never fear you can always go back and enjoy the whole lot - so happy reading friends!!!
A big thank you to Harper Collins, NetGalley and Karin Slaughter for an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Slaughter delivers once again! I never fail to pick up a SLaughter book as I know it promises a fantastic plot, characters which are highly believable, and novels which you can't put down. THis explosive instalment is no exception!
Wow, wow, wow. This is the second book I've read in the Will Trent series, and I absolutely loved it. I think it can be read as a standalone although I will say I feel like I've found an author where I definitely want to read the series from the beginning. After That Night had a great start that immediately grabbed my attention and held it right to the last page. The two main characters Will and Sara are so likeable, I love their relationship and I think the author portrays them so well. I feel like I know them and could picture them in my mind when reading. A horrifying event from Sara's past returns to haunt her that seems to have a connection with a patient Sara treated. With help from Will and Faith Sara revisits her past to find the link and bring the perpetrators to account. I found this to be a dark, disturbing read in many ways, mostly because of its theme and think this may be a difficult read for some. The author holds nothing back in her writing which is very hard hitting and at the same time thought provoking. As always, there are several characters I loathed and I just wanted them to be found out. Overall this is, in my opinion, my best read so far this year - it is beautifully written, has a very good plot line and is a book I felt hard to put down and would pick it up again whenever I had spare time. I would recommend this if you like good, engaging crime thrillers with well established characters. I will definitely look to read the previous books by Karin Slaughter and from the two I've read so far I think I'll really enjoy them.
5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It's great to have Will and Sarah back. A fast read. Good book. Content may be triggering for some readers. I'd recommend this book, it was over too fast!
I've not read a Karin Slaughter book for a while and having finished this one, I'm not sure why. I like her writing and enjoy the continued story of Sara Linton. I couldn't put it down and you need to know how it all ends.
The subject of the book is quite horrific in how a group has been able to get away with committing crimes over so many years but there are plenty of twists and turns along the way and I did not see the ending at all.
Hard-hitting thriller about rape and many unsavoury characters - very good.
This novel deals with Sara Linton, Will Trent and their associates in the GBI and APD. They investigate a case of rape and murder which escalates into a much wider investigation. The statistics quoted (and real) alone are frightening. It's also an indictment of the moneytised American medical industry which won't come as a shock to those of us who aren't American. It's a rollercoaster of a ride with a few twists and turns but the whole experience is an emotional, satisfying and enjoyable read .I enjoy Karin Slaughter's novels and this one is no exception. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
As a fan of Karin Slaughter I was delighted to receive the ARC of 'After That Night' in return for an honest review.
I have read most of Karin Slaughter's novels in this series and the characters are all brilliant.
This novel revolves around Sarah Linton, Will Trent's partner. One night she encounters a rape victim who asks for her help just before she dies. This brings back memories for Sarah of being raped 15 years before.
As the story progresses she realises there are similarities between both rapes and the novel follows a twisty-turny line which concludes with a clever and unexpected ending.
Highly recommended
Thanks to Netgalley and the author for an advanced copy of this book. Karin Slaughter is one of my favourite authors and I adore the Will Trent series so this book was a real treat for me.
It was really interesting to go back and see Sara’s past and how it got her to where we first met her and it made for a really good personal story for her. One of the things I think Karin does best with her writing is the way that she writes such evil characters and yet manages to humanise them in ways that make them feel real, rather than just the token ‘bad guy’. I liked the development of the main characters personal storylines as well, even Amanda had a moment that almost made me cry. It was great to see Will and Sara on a good track in this book, I’m hopeful but not expecting this to continue. I hope to see another installment of the Will Trent series next but in all honesty, any Karin Slaughter book will do!
