Bree Wolf is one of my favourite authors. Her stories are well crafted and her style of writing is easy to read, proofread with few if any errors, and grammatically correct.
This book is no exception.
It is the first in a series across time, and sets up the epic tale that Bree crafts.
Only two people in a remote area? Count me in for the cutest love story. Add a Scottish highlander? And I’m sold. I loved the characters and setting so much and was able to picture it vividly. It took me out of the gross hot Arizona heat and into somewhere better.
Delightful and a fun summer read.
Many thanks to Wolf Publishing and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a sweet historical romance about a shy and naive girl subjected to an unwanted marriage. There is a pretend kidnapping and rescue by a hot Scottish man- Keir MacKinnear. Grandma Edie- Dowager Countess of Whickerton- to the rescue. She is Sarah 's best allie with her cunning and adventurous ways. If you liked Kresley Cole and her lykaes finding their mates, you will like this.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily give my honest review and all opinions are my own.
Flames of Winter, the first in the series is a really good read. Lots of intrigue, and twists that you don't see coming. There was a bit of a pacing problem about half way through were the book gets a little too slow and it's a little more work to keep reading.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for a fair review.
Although it's got a promising setting and storyline, I was put off by the pacing of the book. It was hard to stay engaged, I think because it was a little slower than the regency romance I'm used to.
The first in Flames of Winter series does not disappoint. Flames of Winter will grab your attention from the moment you begin Sarah and Keir's story. Going along with a plan of Grandma Edie's Keir finds himself kidnapping Sarah in the dead of night. Is the kidnapping the only thing Grandma Edie has planned for the two? Bree Wolf has written a story with well thought out characters and each one comes across clearly as their individual personalities become more than just part of the tale they become embedded in your heart, it is smoothly written, with secrets, wonderful dialogue, with a superb plott that is filled with tension-building twist and turns.
If you are looking for a more atmospheric and wintery read, that Bree Wolf's Flames of Winter might be the book for you. This is the second novel I have read by Bree Wolf and I find her style and tone to be on a slower and languid side. Wolf's writing seems best read in a more gentle pace. Wolf also seems to really develop her world with a larger expanse of characters in which some of the more secondary one play perhaps a larger role than a typical romance. I think if you are a fan of an older style romance that languishes in descriptions and slower pace and populated with many people, then Bree Wolf might be an author you really enjoy.
While I don't dislike Bree Wolf's writing, I do tend to lose interest and wish the pace would ramp up to keep me more interested and invested in the romance between the hero and heroine. I found this novel, while the plotline seemed to be something that I would revel in, to be at a much more gentle pace and a very slow build up of the romantic relationship which left me wanting for more. With a lack of true chemistry between the hero and heroine, this novel felt too long and thin on the plot to keep me fully invested.
I love all of Bree Wolf’s writing. I have a tendency to read the, way to fast. Sweet story. It has been a bit since I read the Whickerton series but was glad to see this next group of books.
I just reviewed Flames of Winter by Bree Wolf. #FlamesofWinter #NetGalley
Flames of Winter by Bree Wolf is a cosy and comfortable story. It iss an imaginative story about a young woman who is about to be sold to an old man as payment of her father’s gambling debts. Sarah Mortenson needed to be brave, well Grandma Edie, the Dowager Lady Whickerton, was not going to have it and plotted a kidnapping had arranged it all, including the carriage waiting for her at the end of the mews. She did it. Only when they got out of town did she meet her “captor,” Keir Mackinnear, second son of a Scottish laird and grandson to Grandma Edie’s best friend. He took her to a small cabin in the woods that he had prepared for them. There was food, firewood, and clothing for them both. They would be here until the ransom was paid. Then Sarah could go home. Since she was ruined she would no have to marry Lord Blackmore, and she could us the collected ransom to pay her father’s gambling debts. She was frightened but Grandma Edie said it was a good plan and she had helped Sarah before.
Grandma Edie was a schemer. She had her own motives and while they were compatible with Sarah’s, they took more time. Sarah and Keir spent enough time together to get to know one another. They also spent enough time in the cabin for Sarah’s self-esteem to improve. She was capable and she was able to survive away from her parents. She was still nervous. What if Blackmore found them? Well-written characters, Sarah and Keir, give this novel a life. Keir is a gentle man, one who cares about Sarah as a human before he falls in love with her. Of course, we knew they would fall in love, but did we see Sarah becoming strong in the process. Strong enough to leave him behind?
Flames of Winter will be the first in a new title series by Bree Wolf. I have enjoyed other books by her and hope to read the remaining books once released. This book follows Sarah Mortensen who has an arranged marriage lined up for her to a very intimidating man, who will clear her fathers debts. She does not want to be married to him and would prefer to stay unwed. She and "Grandma Edie" plan her kidnapping and it is arranged for the night before her to-be-wedding. During her time being "kidnapped", she realizes that not all men are gross and this particular one has her heart.
Nice HEA with some ups and downs. To me, it was a feel good story when you want a quick read. I did not care for the cliffhanger at the end, because now I need to remember to look out for the next book :)
Thank you to Bree Wolf, WOLF Publishing and NetGalley for a free eCopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I found this book to be really slow if the pace had of been quicker it would of been a better read. It definitely could of been a page turner.
If you are looking for a comfortable, cosy afternoon read Flames of Winter fits perfectly. The heroine is delightful, the hero almost perfect and the setting just romantic enough to be entertaining and enjoyable.
Sarah Mortensen has had enough of her parents scheming to get her married. The latest is a man she truly does not like and in desperation she confides in the Dowager Countess of Whickerton, known to one and all as Grandma Edie; a very shrewd woman, some would say sneaky and manipulative, but with a heart of gold, treasured by her family.
Kier MacKinnear, struggling to cope with the loss of a dearly beloved sister, finds himself agreeing to a crazy plan put together by Grandma Edie, to stage a ‘fake’ kidnapping, and then to take Sarah, daughter of Baron Hartmore, to a remote, very secretive location. He considers himself completely crazy for even agreeing to such a hair brained scheme, but he has given his word.
At the last minute Sarah has serious doubts about the entire scheme, but eventually plucks up enough courage to leave all she has ever known. She finds herself being transported through a cold winters night, to a small cottage in the country, by a very handsome young man with a definite Scottish accent. Who could he possibly be and is she safe from his advances, worry her immensely.
One very cheeky cat, Loki, two horses, an old goat, some chickens and a handsome man form an interesting cast of characters, as Sarah begins to learn about life as a young woman rather than marriage material to pay off her father’s gambling debts.
Flames of Winter is the first in the Flames of Winter series which does not end as expected. As the author Bree Wolf says, some stories take more telling that one book. This one certainly does, leaving a distinct desire to read the second book in the series due out in March, Shield of Fire.
This was my first Bree Wolf book and I enjoyed the solid character development and mostly the consistency of the two main characters relationship. The pace was too slow for me sometimes but I could definitely understand the magic to this story.

Sadly, not a fan of this book. What I did read was disappointing. The female was way too scared! She seemed like she would jump at her own shadow. And her intended didn't seem any better, viewing her as property rather than an actual person. Fully aware that, for the time period, that is how women were often viewed. But it was a little extreme in this book.
Slow, slow, slow burn Regency romance featuring a timid female main character who gets help escaping an unwanted marriage by faking her own kidnapping by a Scottish brogue male main character who is actually a friend of a friend of the fmc. The two spend 5 weeks in a cabin in the woods and sparks start to fly. Eventually. Ends with a Happy For Now/ Cliffhanger combo.
Flames of Winter by Bree Wolf is an imaginative story about a young woman who is about to be sold to an old man as his bride, and as payment of her father’s gambling debts. Sarah Mortenson was about to do something that required bravery, a commodity she was sadly lacking in. She was going to run, well, ostensibly she was to be kidnapped, by herself. Grandma Edie, The Dowager Lady Whickerton, had arranged it all, including the carriage waiting for her at the end of the mews. She did it. Only when they got out of town did she meet her “captor,” Keir Mackinnear, second son of a Scottish laird and grandson to Grandma Edie’s best friend. Sarah Mortensen is the daughter of Baron Hartmore, a man desperate to marry his daughter off in the hopes of saving himself from ruin due to his gambling debts. However, Sarah places her trust in the Dowager Countess of Whickerton, who she knows as Grandma Edie, to help her escape. Feigning a kidnapping appears to be the way to save Sarah, and Keir Mackinnear, the second son to the chief of Clan Mackinnear, is sent to do the job. Yet, as they spend time together hiding out in a cabin, Sarah and Keir begin to wonder if they can ever be apart.
Whilst this was a great premise to a story, I did struggle with the character of Sarah, who takes on the challenge to escape, but is still so frightened of everything else, especially Keir. With Keir’s patience for his ‘little wisp’, a chance of relationship is revealed but only towards the very end of the story. It did at times seem to struggle with its pace, with little happening from chapter to chapter.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A flustered kidnapee! _______2.5
I must say this dragged on as an annoying, chicken hearted, young woman who could scarcely put one foot in front of another finally took action. Scolded or rather berated on one shoulder by the voice of her mother and encouraged on the other by the voice of Grandma Edie, Sarah has screwed up enough courage to flee her situation.
Sarah Mortensen, daughter to Baron Hartmore, was to be given in marriage to a older man as payment for her father’s gambling debts. The night before her wedding she managed to leave the house in the middle of the night, get into a carriage and decamp out of London, escorted by an unknown gentleman, Keir MacKinnear, second son of a Highland Laird. Keir does all he can to make this timid mouse not fear him, but Sarah’s more like a deer caught in the cross fires than anything else. Keir has been sent by Grandma Edie to perform a little task for her. A feigned abduction, a ‘kidnapping!’
The rest of the novel divided itself between Sarah being teased by Keir and her gathering her courage. Keir refers to her as ‘little wisp’. We have occasional glimpses of anger from her unpleasant fiancé, Albert Harris, Baron Blackmore. Then there’s machinations of the Dowager Countess, Lady Whickerton, the grandmother of her closest friend. Yes known to the family as Grandma Edie.
It all ends with an HEA that didn’t come quickly enough for me.
A Wolf ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.
A well written, easy read with strong characters & a well paced story. I loved Keir who was patient, gentle & caring of Sarah who did annoyed me at the beginning as she started as a helpless and timid female but as the story progressed Sarah did grow and develop. The only thing I didn't like is that it ended on a cliff hanger and you have to get the next book to see what happens which I'm not a great fan of. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
