One Wedding and an Earl is the fourth book in the The Duchess Society. Tracy Sumner has written a fun novel about two independent people who are determined to never marry only to find each other.
Oliver Aspinwall is the Earl of Stanford. His life growing up with his father was full of hate and abuse. After his time with the army in India he was constantly chased by ghosts and found drugs as a successful retreat for a while. In reality he still yearns daily for the sweet oblivion of opium, he is trying to live in his ancestral home and redo the damage left by his father.
Necessity Byrne has pulled herself up from the gutters. She always knew plants and gardens were her way forward. Necessity was hired to help the Earl of Stanford fix the land around his home by his half brother. She focuses on the task at hand but is constantly besieged by Oliver and his smoldering looks.
Fire meets fire and the two jump into an affair, only to realize the affair is more than they realized, determined, and planned. Oliver and Byrne have much to solve, but the difference in status and needs are the struggle they face. One Wedding and an Earl is a sensuous journey into their world. Tracy Summer’s book is a HOT, delicious read.
Tracey Sumner’s books are always a dream to read and this one is no exception.
The story of Ollie’s and Nessie’s route to love against all the odds of society is a beautiful read.
Although this book is part of a series it is a stand alone story.
Beautifully written with just the right amount of erotica in it .
I am absolutely loving Tracy Sumner's The Duchess Society series, and Ollie and Necessity's story was no exception. Most of the angst and conflict was internal, which did get a little frustrating toward the end. Overall, though, Ollie is the perfect scarred (physically and emotionally) hero, and Necessity is perfect for him. I also enjoyed the appearances by the Leighton Cluster. I always enjoy revisiting characters from this series, and I can't wait for the next entries (I hope) in this series!
I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
The blurb drew me into this classic trope of two people from different classes falling in lust.
The pacing was a bit weird in some places, and the main characters, Ollie and Nessie lacked a bit for me, but otherwise, this is a very low-stakes read with no complications, daddy issues, a couple of funny moments, one or two angsty bits and lots of sex thrown in.
A super quick read, easily finished in under an hour, perfect for a lazy weekend.
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in return for my honest review.
4 1/2*STARS*
Ollie Aspinwall, Earl of Stanford, has little thought of having anyone plan the unkept lawn of his Derbyshire estate. Byrne Cultivation and Design is owned by an unusual woman. Paid for her work by his bastard brother doesn't help Ollie's attitude. Working her way up from the dirty streets of London, Necessity Byrne is determined to be the best after Capability Jones with her business. Ollie lives with many demons. Having Nessie in and around his house is a distraction he doesn't want, but Nessie is determined she will stay for one month. The madcap ladies of the Duchess Society and their husbands, bring lots of humor to the story. A passionate romance brings changes in Ollie and Nessie's lives.
Scorching hot!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Dangerous Man, Desirous Woman:
Both characters in this story have had unpleasant childhoods, but for different
reasons. Each comes from a different class of society which doesn't help.
Both Ollie and Necessity have many flaws to overcome before they can admit the overpowering attraction, they have for each other.
Intriguing characters, interesting story that's filled with every emotion you can think of.
A topsy turvy roller coaster of desire, angst, frustrations. They take us on a fiery road of passion until they come together and work through their issue so they
can finally reach their HEA.
Mature Advisory:
Delicious!
Take one girl from the wrong side of the tracks, Necessity Byrne of the Shoreditch Byrnes, budding Gardener to the ton, willing to go out of London to work on a garden design by Capability Brown that’s fallen into disrepair.
Into the mix bring a Scarred Earl, Oliver Aspinwall, Earl of Stanford, his faith in humanity, except for his illegitimate brother Xander Macauley and his cohort aptly named Leighton Group, non existent. Haunted by his father’s treatment of him from age five, escape to the army in India has left him fighting opium addiction given for his injuries. Mobbed by the women of the ton and more who are lured by the promise they see of riches or just a good time (he has quite the sexual reputation) they throw themselves at him. He’s fled to the family pile in Derbyshire for the last couple of years, eschewing alcohol and opium, labouring to ease the tension and memories, and drinking tea. He’s put on weight and is even more devastating than before, not that he gives a fig.
Necessity’s been taken up by the Duchess Society, and we know what their help means!
So when the Necessity and Ollie meet again, oh yes! and wasn’t that was interesting! of course the sparks fly. A series of lusty romps doesn’t even begin to cool the ardor between these two.
Their road to a HEA is strewn with miscommunication. I loved it!

Many thanks to the author and publisher.
When the gardener is a Necessity ...
If you read The Wicked Wallflower, then you know about Xander's brother, Ollie, and the attack that disfigured him. This story, Ollie's story, reminds us about that incident and who took care of him in his recovery before jumping ahead a few years to when Ollie is fully healed, physically, but still carries old wounds of the heart, ones that date back to his childhood with Xander.
Josephine "Necessity" Byrne is a young woman who lost her entire family to cholera and struggled to make her own way in the world by establishing herself as a first-rate horticulturist. She is hired by Xander and sent to Ollie's country estate to get his landscaping in order, though it's clear from the start that Xander has high hopes that she'll get more of Ollie's life in order than just the gardens.
Ollie has a bit of an addictive personality, so once he sets his sights on Necessity, she becomes his very reason for living. I absolutely adore romances that show the MMC falling hard and fast, especially when the FMC remains steadfast in her sensible objections. Ultimately, they each are looking for the same thing - a family of their own - and the journey to making that happen is charming and heartwarming every step of the way.
I love the way the author updates us on previous couples, especially Xander and Pippa, and gives us plenty of foreshadowing insight into the characters who will be the focus of the next two books. This continuity in interconnected standalones is my catnip, and I'm hopelessly hooked on this entire series. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Ollie and Necessity had such a good story. A story of their struggle, each in their own way. A story filled with unspoken love, romance, and hot passion. I think Tracy Sumner has done an excellent job on the characters in this story and the series. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series and hating that it is not yet available.
This book does give back story on both characters and can be read alone, but the series is very entertaining.
I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
I didnt understand the one wedding part. They didn't met at a wedding and never went to a wedding but thats okay. I will say this has the same structure as the other books in this series. A HUGE chunk in the middle is set in the bedroom. But you can't necessarily skip it because the talking is very important. I enjoyed the plot and reading about the Leighton clan. An update per se on most of them.
I recieved a free copy so that I might tell you what I honestly think. Hope you enjoyed my review. Now go enjoy the book.
love love love this story - from Ollie to Necessity and seeing the whole family at times together too! I can't wait for the next one in the series.
My one complaint.. the cover - the proportions of the face to the body is just off. I initially passed by this one when I saw it not realizing it was a Tracy Sumner book at first.
Thank you for the early access!
I love Tracey Sumner’s books, I don’t know of another author that writes books that just ooz with desire. There is no other way to describe One Wedding and an Earl. Oliver is a tormented Earl and Necessity is the gardener that can’t live without him. It was a beautiful love story. 5 stars.
Ah!! This book is my new favourite book, in a favourite series! The pining! The longing!
This story was going along, feeling good. We had some hurt comfort backstory, a re-meeting, so many hand clenches and intense gazes… and then. AND THEN—
Literally the hottest and most emotional library scene ever. How was it so hot? And so emotional? I kept glancing down at the page number because I couldn’t believe a scene with that much intimacy was happening that early? And pulling it off?
These characters were just so unique! And their compatibility was so intense that it was squeezing my heart to bits!
Our heroine Necessity was a self-made business woman from the wrong side of town. She was ambitious, irreverent, intelligent, and she was hot and she knew it. She was just.. cool! I’ve never read a romance heroine like her.
And Oliver was more than just your average scarred and reclusive earl. He had this over-thinking and obsessive personality and I loved the way Necessity made him feel so off-kilter. He was pursuer-y but he also so solicitous? ..flexible? I can’t even find the word to describe it, it was just such a uniquely masculine approach to this relationship.
I love the way this author writes scenes, they’re so cinematic. I’m a sucker for characters who keep something that belongs to the other MC in their pocket (because they’re just so in looove 🥰). I loved the dynamic between Oliver and Xander from the previous book. Plus, this was just a god-tier social class difference trope.
Another Great Storyline!
Ollie had never forgotten Necessity or the kindness given to him when he had been cut years previously or how she vowed to be one of the greatest gardeners of her time.
Years later, his brother had asked Necessity to sort out the Earl’s gardens. Ollie wasn’t happy with the situation and he knew he had a strong attraction to her and he had his widow in the village to take care of any of his needs.
Necessity’s reputation as a great gardener was taking off and she was in high demand, she was attracted to Ollie and wanted him to show his adventurous side in and out of bed. He’s had quite a reputation as a rake and a lady’s man before he was injured and it was whispered what his kisses were like and she wanted to taste and feel for herself if his reputation was true! She wasn’t looking for a HEA with him, just a good time.
I loved the take on this story, Necessity knowing and taking what she wanted and that Ollie after fighting his feelings gave in. The banter and passion between them could burn the pages and the interaction with the Leighton cluster was just amazing.
One hot, steamy read you’ll not want to miss.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Historical romance. Regency England. Book 4 of the Duchess Society series. Tragic childhoods for both Ollie and Necessity have made them both wary of romantic entanglements. Oliver, now an earl, has had a shady history of opium dens, brothels, and getting slashed in the face in a gambling hell back alley. He’s now a recluse fixing up the estate where he suffered from his abusive father. Necessity, orphaned when cholera killed her whole family, is soon-to-be the most sought after landscape architect in England. When Necessity is recruited to fix up Oliver’s garden, they give into the attraction, but neither ask for anything more, knowing their own personal traumas and their vast differences in social standing. However, these two are delightfully fiery together and are certainly destined for greater things, if they would just allow themselves to ask for more. Also, a great intro to another street thug with a suspicious history and I’m looking to reading more about him in a future book.
One Wedding and an Earl by Tracy Sumner is the newest book in The Duchess Society. This is Ollie and Necessity’s story. We were briefly introduced to them in the past, and this is the expansion of it that many fans of the series, myself included, have been waiting for.
Ollie remembers Necessity’s kindness to him in his recovery from the assault in the alleyway behind Mac’s in the Rookery. Mac fancies himself a matchmaker and hires Necessity who happens to be the best landscape architect since Capability Brown, to help rehabilitate the grounds at Ollie’s estate.
Attraction flares, agreements are made, feelings develop, and sparks fly! Along the way, a bed may be broken (and repaired). Of course, a heart or two may be mended on the way to their happily ever after.
The Leighton Cluster also makes several appearances. I enjoy the way that Tracy weaves beloved characters from prior stories into current books. It feels like we’re visiting with old friends. Her vivid imagery both of the environment and their emotional states is top tier. It’s one of the reasons she’s on my short list of must-read authors. I strongly recommend adding One Wedding and an Earl to your TBR list!
I received an ARC from the author. The opinions expressed above are my own.
Fantastic new entry to the Duchess Society series by Tracy Sumner. Necessity Byrne is working to become a sought after garden designer, while Oliver, the Earl of Stanford, is known as the "Scarred Rake" and has retreated to his rundown country estate after playing the rake for a number of years. Xander Macauley, Oliver's half-brother, hires Necessity to rescue Oliver's gardens. Oliver and Necessity met once several years before, where sparks flew. Now that they meet again, the sparks become a crescendo. Necessity and Oliver fall into a physical relationship, with neither planning for more. But the heart wants what the heart wants.
I loved this book! Necessity and Oliver's banter is totally amusing and readers can feel the chemistry between them. I also loved checking in on the rest of the Leighton cluster. There is some dithering but not so much that it gets tiresome, and it is great to see the couple come back together without some huge physical drama.
The secondary characters here are also great. Jasper, a secondary love interest for Necessity, deserves his own book!
5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. The opinions herein are my own,
One Wedding and an Earl is the fourth book (plus a prequel novella) in the fantastic Duchess Society series by Tracy Sumner. The book could be read as a stand alone but it is a much richer reading experience having met all of the characters in their own books. It had been a while since I read the previous books (I've read and reviewed every book in the series!) and admittedly was a little confused in the beginning. Once I went back and read my reviews of the series. I was embarrassed that I could forget one of my favorite "book boyfriends" Xander Macaulay! *Swoon* But enough about Macaulay; onto talking about book four!
Necessity Byrne is a girl who grew up in the rookery after tragedy struck her family. She's street smart and wanting to make a name for herself in the horticulture arena. She meets the "scarred earl" when she was younger and uses herbs to heal his wounds. Years later, Macauley hires her to design the gardens at his brother's dilapidated estate. Macauley has decided to play matchmaker and force them together since he noticed a spark at their first meeting. Ollie used to be known as a rake but has since become more reclusive due to war, drug use, and scarring to his face. He prefers the quiet life fixing up his estate, stargazing, and having little to no contact with outsiders. When a sassy female landscape architect shows up with plans to redesign the gardens Ollie can't fight his attraction. With all the verbal sparring it's plain for everyone to see just how much they like each other. They just need to give into their feelings and trust.
Tracy Sumner excels at writing Heroes that are easy to fall in love with. The entire brood of men in the Leighton Cluster are favorites. I don't know how she does it. Even Jasper, who is perceived to be a secondary love interest for Necessity is so charming, mysterious, and interesting. You can't help but root for him. I'm excited to hopefully read his story sometime soon. Tracy always proves to be a hit in my book. You can't go wrong with any of her books.
Tropes include: class difference, former rake, war hero, recovered addict, bluestocking heroine, scarred hero, found family, hero falling first, stargazing, conservatory spice, daddy issues, confident heroine, gardening, enemies to lovers
Thank you to Tracy Sumner, NetGalley, and Wolf Publishing for this eARC. All opinions expressed are my own. #netgalley #tracysumner #oneweddingandanearl #duchesssociety #wolfpublishing
Imaginative and well thought out ( well researched) A very intriguing and emotional regency romance. Well worth the read.
Necessity Byrne is a landscaper with a reputation for being a healer given her knowledge of herbs. When Oliver, the Earl of Stanford, is injured she heals him and left a lingering impression. Years later, Oliver’s brother hires Necessity to redo the gardens as family estate and the sparks immediately start flying between the two who have never forgotten one another, though much of their time is spent arguing. The pair must balance their professional relationship with their strong attraction that of course, leads to real feelings.
This is the fourth book in The Duchess Society series, but can be enjoyed on its own, though the couples from earlier in the series, do make appearances, especially Xander from book three as Oliver is his brother. I really like the Duchess Society group so I was very happy to learn that this book was a continuation of the series rather than the start of something new. I absolutely adored both Necessity and Byrne. I loved Necessity’s independence and willingness to seize the opportunities that come to her with confidence. I loved that Oliver had such a sweet and loving relationship with his brother and his family, despite his loner tendencies (I’m a sucker for heroes with community). I loved the two of them together and am very happy with how their story came out. As always, Tracy’s writing style is just wonderful and easy to read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Wolf Publishing, and Tracy Sumner for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
