I don’t really know where to start with this one. This is my first book by Tracy Sumner and after hearing lots of good things about her books I was excited to jump aboard and try it.
This is the fourth in a series and can be read as a stand-alone, but I honestly think this is why I wasn’t engaged as much as I would have.
The prose was excellent! However I felt a disconnect between the steamy scenes and the rest of the book.
Then there was also something missing between Ollie and Nessie. I can’t quite put my finger on it because I normally am a sucker for a class difference trope. The pacing also seemed a bit off.
I loved the opening of this book. The background stories on Ollie and Nessie, I would’ve liked to see a bit more of the pieces of their lives after these stories. Their meetcute was so promising and I was very excited to dig in further. Unfortunately I got bored. Then because I didn’t read the rest of the series I was confused by the amount of characters that were sporadically introduced.
Also, why would a group of male friends go into random fist fights for the fun of it? It turned me off bigtime. There were more things that didn’t seem to add up and left me confused.
Overall this was unfortunately an underwhelming read.
Thanks to WOLF publishing and Netgalley for providing an ARC
3.5 STARS!!!
I recently read a novella from this author, and was very impressed and so I was very excited to read this ARC!
A woman with a tragic backstory who has struggled against the odds to make a life by herself, to stand on her own two feet. A man who has big muscles and likes children. A cool font for the chapter headings.
What more could a reader want??
To sum it up, this is a classic enemies-to-lovers romp with loads of sex. No complications, just a bucket full of daddy issues. A dash of humor here and there, angst that is sad to read but does not tear at your heart strings, and one or two 'awww' moments. All in all, an easy and quick read. I adored the beginning of the book, and their first meeting was just perfection!
However - and I had never thought I would be saying this - sometimes the characters talk too much,. Usually I am thirsting for more dialogue and it's often my favorite part of storytelling but here sometimes I was left feeling like "okay we get it lets move on". And even with all that talking, there were a few unnecessary misunderstandings (and a few necessary ones, too.)
The hero says, "Frankly I'm surprised we stopped arguing long enough to pleasure one another..." and I AGREE. Sometimes the arguments just got too long-winded.
One Wedding And An Earl is a fun, low-stakes, very sexy romance for the days when you want a quick, no-nonsense read.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC!
Tracy Sumner continues with #4 (plus a prequel) in The Duchess Society series. I’ve read the entire series and couldn’t wait to read my ARC. Oliver Aspinwall, the Earl of Stanford is sent a gift by his by-blow half brother Xander (MC in the last book). Necessity Byrne of the Shoreditch Byrne’s is a landscape architect. Xander sends Nessie to help restore the once grand grounds of the Earl’s crumbling estate. He also may be doing a little matchmaking and meddling to help his brother recover from his war injuries and return to society. Necessity wants to access to the work of brilliant Capability Brown who once worked on the gardens. Nessie and Ollie start of squabbling but sparks fly and passion is in the air.
Ollie wants her but can she really become a Countess?
I’ve visited many great houses and Castles in England that celebrate Capability Brown’s work, so I found that a fun addition to the story. I like that Earl has had a hard life, because of his father and the war. Necessity is a delight. She pays attention to the Duchess Society who help her improve her language and manners after growing up in the rookery. She knows her worth as a landscaper. This can be read as a stand alone but the previous couples make appearances. if you don’t want spoilers on who are having children etc. read the books in order. The books series is continuing as the author in the notes at the end mentions at least two possible future leads.
I recommend the series for historical romance fans. I would rate medium for steaminess. And there is light heartless in the banter between the couple and friend group. Thank you to NetGalley and Wolf Publishing for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Where do I begin with my love for this book?!
Or this series, truly, it's one of the greatest series I've ever read.
This is the story of Ollie, an earl that tries to find his footing in the world, after his service in India, a battle with laudanum addiction and getting closer again to his brother. And Nessie, a common girl, alone in the world, who has the gift of working with plants and who wants to become the best horticulturist in London.
Both are amazing characters, round and complex, so endearing and so beautifully constructed, with a lot of details about them and a lot of scenes to reveal shades of their personalities. Nessie is "the earth", she breathes plants and all things landscaping and has the gift of healing with plants. Ollie is "the sky", an earl with a big family legacy, a troubled childhood which bleed into his hard, adult life, a children whisperer with a kind heart and a love for astronomy and star gazing.
Their story is lovely from the beginning to the end, though my favorite part was the beginning up until middle, all that dancing, taking and giving, the verbal spats, being almost enemies, but so attracted to each other. The air crinkles with the energy their connection and denial of it generates. All that heat, and the hot scenes, their loving is a big part of the book and there's nothing boring or redundant about it.
Not to mention their friends, now almost family - all make an appearance and Nessie even brings her friend into the mix, so the supporting act is stellar, like in all this series. Can't wait to read his story, too. I also can't let unmentioned the little feminist bursts Nessie has in the beginning, her character is so empowering and inspiring, for the time she lives in, she is totally free, having her own business and is very careful to keep her independence, while willing to explore what a love life can offer. She finds her perfect match in Ollie.
The whole story is nicely paced and beautifully written and it's a great addition to the already wonderful series, it was a pleasure being swept into this world again.
I received a copy of this in order to offer my personal view on it.
4.25/5 stars! I really enjoyed this regency romance. I'm a sucker for this genre and Tracy Summer did not disappoint. I was immediately drawn to Ollie and his story. Necessity Bryne took a bit for me to warm up to. She's entertaining and smart and witty, but early on her character felt a bit two-dimensional. I also struggled with the idea that any woman at that time would actually get support from the ton for having a business without exchanging her body as well. It's not a judgment or support of that concept. But even the modiste that ran their businesses often had wealthy gentlemen lovers providing for them to make ends me. Once the story got going, however, I quickly forgot that concern because seeing the spark between Ollie and Necessity and watching it develop was amazing. Would definitely read more by this author in the future.
I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
Excellent book, my favorite in the series so far! I loves how Necessity is a strong woman from the ‘slums’ and Oliver never wanted to change a single thing about her, she didn’t have to become a different person to earn his love. And likewise, Oliver didn’t have to hide his demons to be worthy of Necessity, she accepted his faults. Their chemistry was top notch, probably the best intimate scenes of the series for me. The writing was excellent, everything flowed well, characters and storylines from the past stayed well defined. I really look forward to the next book!
3 Stars! This is the 4th book in ‘The Duchess Society’ series and can mostly be read as a standalone. I’ve read 2 of the previous books but that was so long ago that I don’t remember a lot from them and felt a tad bit confused at times. Mostly I was confused as to why the 2 main characters were arguing so much. Stanford/Ollie and Necessity Byrnes/Nessie were the main characters and their banter was confusing to me. Kind of like reading Shakespeare in high school, confusing and feeling like I missed something. I would’ve loved more background on both of the main characters so I could understand why they are the way they are. Ollie acted like Necessity should be a freakin mind reader and just know how he felt. Maybe it’s just me feeling confused over here, considering how many people are giving this book 5 stars. Still an interesting and entertaining read though.
*I received this at no charge & I voluntarily left this review.*
Reclusive Ollie is trying to hide from society, war memories and his addictions by living on his country estate. When Necessity is sent by his brother to restore the grounds, they both realize the attraction between them. She feels she can never marry into society and he is afraid he is too broken to commit. I received an ARC from NetGalley and WOLF Publishing for my honest review.
Despite having a long TBR List, when I saw that I could get an ARC for this book, I had to request it and move it to the top!
This next chapter of The Duchess Society Series does not disappoint! Nessie and Ollie are one HOT couple, and you cannot help being pulled into their story, and seeing how they manage to find their HEA.
It was fun "seeing" the couples from the previous books, and meeting a future MC. A delicious romp of a book! 4-1/2 stars
Thank you Wolf Publishing and NetGalley for giving me this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
One Wedding and an Earl is the fourth book in the Duchess Society series. Xander (from the previous book) plays matchmaker and recruits Necessity, the horticulturist, to restore the gardens of Derbyshire where his little brother, the Earl Oliver Stanford resides.
Of course sparks start to fly, and when Ollie and Necessity (I LOVE her name!) go for it, they really go for it. Necessity doesn't think that she'd ever become his Countess though, not when they belong to different stations. The undeniable attraction between them won't go away though. They always seem to be fighting and then giving in to it.
I love Ollie, he's different from Sumner's previous male characters. He's scarred, has seen things, is tough, but also has so much love to give. He's a complex one, and seeing Necessity unravel him was a joy. Necessity is strong-willed, knows what she wants, is not afraid to ask the Earl for whatever she wants, but also keeps him at arm's length. The fall of these two was just swoonworthy.
I loved seeing the other couples in this book, and I love how Tracy writes the guys and their bromances.
I am eager to read the next books in this series!
Thank you to the publisher and author for the ARC via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Review of ARC from WOLF Publishing
An extremely heart-warming and thoughtful story about an earl and his horticulturalist coming together to find love....
I always love historical fictional romance and I wanted to start with one of my favorite genres and let me tell you guys, Tracy Sumner, has joined my favorite authors list. This was my first book from her and I am so excited to read her other books!
James rating: 5 out of 5 heart in the flame stars! ✨
This book was completely awesome! I fell in love with Ollie and Nessi and loved their story of how they got to their happily ever after. I was hooked from the first chapter and I got all warm, tingly, sweet and of course steamy feelings from this book!
Some of my favorite parts from this book are Ollie and Nessie's banter, the steamy scenes *fans thyself*, their love and the brotherhood moments of Xander and Ollie. I absolutely melted with the interaction we had from Kit and Ollie.
If you guys love historical fiction and want an heartwarming story to begin 2023 with, this is the book for you!!
Thank you so much WOLF Publishing for this ARC!
This is the 4th book of The Duchess Society Series, my first time with this series. You can read it as stand alone. This book was good.
Lord Oliver Aspinwall, Earl of Stanford. Tormented war hero, ruffian, outcast, opium addict. People call him The Scarred Earl. Necessity Byrne was the best landscape architect in England. She come to the Derbyshire estate to fix the ramshackel garden.
They had meet 3 years ago when Lord Oliver get injury, Nessie give him some herb medecine. They feel something at that time. When meet again in the future the spark still there. They try to ignore each other but the attraction so hard, Nessie try to focus on her work, Lord Oliver trying to woo her even he said dosnt need countess, dosnt need love.
I love how Nessie understand Oliver, she understand his struggle, his pain. For that Oliver fall over head to her, when they are sepperated, how misserable both of them!
“I lie awake at night aching for you. My body mourning, my heart heavy, like someone died...I’ve missed you more than I’d imagined, more than I’d intended. More than I’d dreamed I could miss anyone. More than I like."
SWOONNNN
