Wow!!!!!!! I’ve read a few of Harlan Coben’s books before and this is my favourite so far. It was so hard to put down - and my heart was absolutely pounding throughout most of it - I had a couple of really bad nights’ sleep because I was too wound up from reading and stressing about David!
Which sounds bad - but it was just amazing and such a fantastic and gripping story.
Five years ago, David was convicted of brutally murdering his 3-year-old son, Matthew. He has always maintained that he is innocent, despite all the evidence against him, including a neighbour who claimed to see him bury the murder weapon.
He has grown used to life in prison and given up any hopes for the future as he is so devastated by the loss of his son and what he saw that night. But now, out of the blue, his former sister-in-law comes to visit him and shows him a photo - which appears to show an 8-year-old Matthew alive and well.
What follows is just incredible - as David forms a plan to break out of prison, find his son and clear his name. But of course everything is set against him and there is more to the story than David ever imagined.
As David digs deeper into the events leading up to that night, the police and FBI keep closing in, and the story is just relentless in pace throughout.
On top of the amazing story, I just love Harlan Coben’s writing style. It’s so informal, and really how someone would speak in their own head. It’s clever and witty and makes you feel very connected with the characters. Everyone has a lot of attitude and is likeable in their own way - from David, who has been pushed so far he has nothing to lose, to the slightly eccentric and very intelligent FBI agent, Max, and David’s sister-in-law Rachel with her fierce detective skills and traumatic past.
Amazing! I can’t wait for the next one!
Harlan Coben excels at his craft and “I Will Find You” is definitely a page turner or if you are a kindle reader a fast screen flicker!
David Burroughs is in gaol, accused of the murder of his 3 year old son, Matthew and although he claims he didn’t do it, the evidence against him is overwhelming.
His wife has divorced him and he hasn’t seen her for the five years he’s been in prison so when his wife’s sister, Rachel visits him and shows him a photo of a boy at a theme park who looks exactly like Matthew, David resolves to try and find out what is going on.
This involves escaping from prison and following the clues to try and find out if his son is alive and thus clear his name.
This is typical Harlan Coben with a fast paced plot and many twists and turns. It certainly kept me equally entertained and enthralled, trying to work out what is really going on.
David makes for a good lead character and he gradually changes from a grieving father who believes he hasn’t been able to protect his son and so is therefore deserving of his punishment to someone who is desperate to find his child alive and will stop at nothing to achieve this goal.
I definitely recommend this book to twisty thriller fans and if you have read and enjoyed other books by this author you will certainly like this.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for my advance copy.
David Burroughs is serving a life sentence for the murder of his son. Five years later his wife has remarried, but her sister arrives at the prison to deliver the news that his son still may be alive .....she has a photo that seems to show a boy in the background with a similar birth mark to Matthew his son. So starts this gripping thriller, he plans to escape the maximum security prison find Matthew, clear his name and find out what happed that night. A lot of plot twists and turns, fast paced. If you can go with the flow you will not be disappointed, pure escapism!!
I absolutely loved this book, Coben has delivered another electrifying, exhilarating thriller and one that I could not put down.
The plot for this is astonishing; it is both exciting and emotional and I was hooked. There are so many different threads that Coben masterfully weaves together. 'I Will Find You' also delivers on the twists and turns, there are plenty in this book and again they make for edge of your seat reading.
This would not be a Coben read without his usual sarcasm and wit and I loved it. The characters are wonderful and the plot is fantastic. I highly recommend this.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House UK for an advance copy.
Harlen Coben, writing skills are second to none. Absolutely loved this book and couldn’t put it down.
Every page had a new twist and turn and I was taken into different exciting directions. I enjoyed David’ story, a father fighting for his son and right to the very end he never gave up.
I had no inkling as to who the culprit would be and that’s down to Harlen’ very good writing and storytelling skills.
Would I watch this if it was made into a series? 100%! Brilliant.
A very easy read and not one of Harlan Coben's best. A father accused of murdering his son who is then mysteriously seen alive.......a break out from prison that seemed far too easy and a chase across America that always seemed to miss him. Help comes in unasked forms and no one seems too surprised to see him. When the truth is finally revealed it seems rushed and very little consideration taken about Matthew at all.
Coben does what he does very well: and this is a nice addition to the Cobenverse. It's not his most outstanding, but it's far from his worst either, and I loved it - slick, well-crafted, what you'd expect. Enjoyed it a lot.
Harlan Coben is such an accomplished author and this books delivers once more. For me, it is not just the setup that sounds interesting but the delivery of the punch of a plot that makes this book first class. Bravo.
A very clever storyline but have to admit found it quite difficult at first as everything was over descriptive causing me to skim a few pages - but decided to stick with it and pleased I did. The plot itself was very interesting and well thought out with a good conclusion.
This is a superb read, extremely well crafted by a master author.
It has a story that will keep you guessing right up until the last page. The story is full of surprises with brilliantly developed characters. Action, mystery, intrigue and drama, the book has it all. I can certainly see this becoming another Netflix series. I have always found Mr Coben creates brilliant stories but he has outdone himself with this one. Please get the book and prepare yourself for an all consuming experience, it’s that good!
Coben is one of my favourite authors and I’d have said it would be difficult to beat some of his previous titles. I was wrong; I think I Will Find You is his best yet. He just gets better and better with every book and this hits every spot for pace, plot, characters and heart stopping tension. He’s superb.
The story centres on the murder of a child. His father is sentenced but it then appears the child is alive. Father breaks out of prison determined to find him. But the intricacy of the plotting reaches new levels in a story that just ratchets up tension with every chapter. The characters are real likeable people and I was literally holding my breath in places. A superb thriller by one of the best writers. This will be a blockbuster success. Absolutely loved it.
What can you say about a Harlan Coben book that hasn’t already been said? The man’s a genius, and one of the best storytellers ever!
This book is hard to define, it’s a story about lies, deceit, a prison escape, people standing by their friends and people you think are friends not being friends at all! David Burrough’s is serving life for the brutal murder of his son when he is shown a photo that suggests his son is still alive! He knows he must break out of prison to find out the truth.
There are more twists and turns than a roller coaster! You know it’s a great book and a thriller when you find yourself awake at 4am finishing it and writing a review for it!!
Did I guess in advance how it would pan out? I was right on some counts and wrong on others, definitely kept me guessing!
No spoilers so circumspect with the limited amount of information able to make available. Without doubt a five star read on every level. Complex story line involving a father serving a long prison sentence for the murder of his son. Weighted down with confused memories and ridden with guilt he serves his sentence on autopilot allowing himself no visitors., no forgiveness and no explanation. An unexpected and unwelcome visitor brings earth shattering news that changes everything. Suddenly the story develops a frenetic pace and urgency that overcomes every obstacle in the search for answers, redemption, and clarity as to the chain of events that destroyed the lives of generations of a loving family. Intangible clues, bizarre coincidences and long lost connections all combine towards an explosive conclusion that cleverly ties up numerous loose ends with a hugely unexpected twist. An honour to have been allowed an ARC of this superb book from this gifted author. Many thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the privilege of providing an honest review.
Do you have go to Authors? For example, if you are looking for a legal thriller then you might choose a John Grisham novel, or looking for Crime Detective genre with Michael Connelly (Bosch series). Maybe you feel like a Social Commentary blast and opt for Zadie Smith or an investigation into a historic character (Cicero, Dreyfus, or murder of Charles I) then your go to would be Robert Harris. I used to be an avid reader of Harlan Coben mystery thrillers but somehow his books had fallen off the radar.
But then I read an article about the TV adaptation of many of his novels including my favourite “The Woods. So many of his novels have been adapted. This is indicative of some great plots. Here are some examples:
“The Stranger” (2020), Safe” (2018), “The Woods” (2020), “Stay Close” (2022), “Gone for Good” (2021), “The Innocent” (2021), and “El desorden que dejas” (2020) - (The Inheritance).
Clearly Harlan Coben is a popular American author of mystery and thriller novels. He has written many books, and his works are generally fast-paced and suspenseful, often featuring intricate plots and unexpected twists. So it was time for me to revisit Coben and look at his latest “I Will Find You”.
What is it about? Netgalley summarises as follows: David and Cheryl Burroughs are living the dream – married, a beautiful house in the suburbs, a three-year-old son named Matthew – when tragedy strikes one night in the worst possible way. David awakes to find himself covered in blood, but not his own – his son’s. And while he knows he did not murder his son, the overwhelming evidence against him puts him behind bars indefinitely.
Five years into his imprisonment, Cheryl’s sister arrives – and drops a bombshell. She’s come with a photograph that a friend took on vacation at a theme park. The boy in the background seems familiar – and even though David realizes it can’t be, he knows it is.
It’s Matthew, and he’s still alive.
David plans a harrowing escape from prison, determined to do what seems impossible – save his son, clear his own name, and discover the real story of what happened that devastating night.
As always his plot is complex and intricate. The early part of the story in the prison is particularly gritty and realistic in the confines of prison. The escape is clever but fraught with difficulty. As he traces his son, there are plenty of unsuspected twists – most revolving around DNA. There is plenty of fast paced action before the denouement, Who can David trust as he narrows down the search? Just when you think you have grasped the outcome there is a final twist. So clever!
In summary an engaging and entertaining plot, with complex characters and plot twists that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. So my go-to mystery/thriller writer? No surprise, Harlan Coben!
I Will Find You is a typically involving and entertaining tale from master storyteller Harlan Coben, a writer who despite his prolific output continues to come up with unique and interesting storylines.
David Burroughs is in prison for the murder of his son ,Matthew, 5 years previously and his battered face shows the evidence of other prisoner's contempt for his crime. Despite seemingly cast iron evidence David proclaims his innocence of a crime that cost him not only his son but his seemingly fairy-tale marriage to Cheryl and his relationship with his father. Despite refusing to see visitors ,not that there was a queue, David is eventually intrigued enough by attempts from former sister-in-law Rachel to see him that he reluctantly accepts her visit. Rachel shows him something that suggests ,against all odds, that Matthew is still alive.
That's the beginning of a rollercoaster ride as Matthew sees a slim chance of proving his innocence, the slight problem of course being that he is in a maximum security prison where life becomes a lot more interesting and dangerous after Rachel's visit.
No spoilers here but this is classic Coben with secrets, twists and hidden motives. There's a nod to previous books and the usual range of diverse and complex characters. My favourites were a pair of Secret Agents ,an unlikely couple with a neat line in comedic banter.. There's also a bit of social commentary and a character I'm guessing is partly based on a "well known political personality",or at least his ilk.
It's fun,it's gripping,it's twisty,it's Harlan Coban, what more could you ask for?
HARLAN COBEN – I WILL FIND YOU ****
I read this novel in advance of publication through NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Harlan Coben is a master of twists and turns and high concept dramas. This opens with: “I am serving the fifth year of a life sentence for murdering my own child. Spoiler alert: I didn’t do it.”
David Burroughs is beating himself up over not being able to have protected his son. Though he didn’t murder him, he deserves to be in jail. Until someone turns up with a recent photograph of his son – the tipping point for twists and turns and intrigue. And breaking out of jail with the help of the governor who happens to be best friends with David’s ailing father – how else would he find him?
I don’t want to create spoilers so all I will say in criticism is that there are two FBI agents whose dialogue is more suited to a second-rate comedy show and who in real life wouldn’t have got through their training academy, assuming they have such a thing. They’re very annoying. And early on there’s a whole spurge of backstory which slows things down. But once you get past that it rollicks along at Coben’s usual breathless pace towards an ending that if not surprising, at least satisfies. Not earth-shattering but well worth a read.
Have to confess this is the first book by Harlan Coben I've read although I've seen his novels on the shelves plenty of times.
"I Will Find You" is a fast paced, suspenseful novel, the end of each chapter leaving the reader desperate to carry on. The premise is that David Burroughs is serving time in jail for the murder of his son. He is resigned to his fate and gets on with trying to keep out of the way of any trouble until his sister in law, Rachel, pays him an unexpected visit after five years. The information she gives him sends him on a roller coaster journey that lasts for the rest of the book.
However, it has to be read with a large pinch of salt because everything is a bit over the top. The bad guys are extremely bad, the violence is extremely violent, the rich are extremely rich, and the plot lines are extremely far fetched. If you don't mind any of that it is a well written decent thriller with some enjoyable moments. I would be happy to read more of Coben's books.
With thanks to Netgalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for the arc copy in return for an honest review.
I’ve read quite a few Harlen Coben novels over the years and I find that I need to be in a certain state of mind to fully appreciate where he’s going to take me. This one is a great example: the setup is somewhat wacky – David Burroughs was imprisoned five years ago for the murder of his own son, though can’t recall all details of that fateful night and isn’t truly sure whether he did it or not – and now I’m just waiting for the surprise that’ll truly kick the story off. That comes when he’s shown a picture of a boy, captured in a recent holiday snap, who shows a striking resemblance to his ‘dead’ son.
The tale is replete with a cast of characters straight out of Wacky Races (for those old enough to remember the cartoon series), including prison chief who’s best friends with David’s father, a family of despicable plutocrats and – best of all – a couple of FBI agents who carry on a hilarious Abbot and Costello act throughout. Yes, it’s all totally unbelievable but, true to form, it’s also highly entertaining.
It’s a fairly short read and the action never stops. Coben cleverly sidesteps reality by weaving a complex series of events, co-incidences and sense defying escapades as Burroughs wrestles with his memory, his conscience and everyone who is out to thwart him in an effort to discover the truth and perhaps even a son who he was sure was dead. Despite my scepticism, I quickly found that I was anxious to get back to the action whenever I set the book aside. An ideal beach read? Yes, but also (as I discovered) great for late nights when you can’t sleep and you just want something light and diverting to focus on until sleep drags you away.
Harlan Coben is always a safe bet for a good read and this was no exception. Very moreish and continued the streak of unputdownable reads. You spend a good chunk of the first half wondering if all is as it seems and as the story unwinds the fictional world gets darker. 5 stars from me, always a good thriller that keeps you up past bedtime
David has been in prison for the last five years serving his sentence for the murder of his young son.
His sister in law comes to visit to give him some surprising information that could prove his innocence.
A fast paced thriller with some twist and turns that had me in the edge of my seat.
