A really enjoyable thriller by writer Harlan Coben. When I got in to it I drifted back to my youth and the TV series called The Fugitive, interestingly it's even mentioned in the novel. A father wrongfully convicted of bludgeoning his three year old son to death, or was he? Could he have committed this dreadful crime whilst sleep-walking? So starts the story. It's a great hook and pages turn faster than the sails of a windmill in a hurricane. The writing style is quite light and rather funny in places. I liked the rapport between FBI special agent Max and Sarah and their 'interviewing' techniques. There were a few concerns, one was the body of the slain son, I question whether there weren't any doubts about his identity but it's possible that the parents were never fully presented with it. Secondly, the telephone conversation in the visiting room of the prison, surely one would expect to be overheard? Thirdly and let me say I'm not familiar with American law but I would hazard a guess that shooting two security guards would merit some sanction? Those concerns aside, it was a very entertaining thriller.
A great action packed thriller of a read, great characters and well written which kept me involved in the storyline and on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the end.
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Cornerstone for this ARC which I can thoroughly recommend.
Coben really shows his skills as a storyteller in this book. He takes a really unbelievable plot and turns it into an enjoyable story. Even though I kept thinking how preposterous the plot was, I continued reading and at no point was tempted to give up. Coben is always readable but hopefully his next book will have a better storyline. I look forward to it.
A brilliant Harlan Coben read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Well paced and easy to demolish in one sitting.
3.5 stars.
Wow just wow. Didn't see this storyline coming at all. A mastermind of storytelling.
In jail for killing his son David gets an unexpected visit from his ex sister in law.
This visit throws David's world into turmoil and sets a chain of events off.
I have never been disappointed by a Harlan Coben book
This is an action packed search for a boy that is supposed to be dead but may actually be alive. Matthew's father, David, is thought to have murdered him when he was 3 years old and is serving a murder sentence in prison. But when David's ex sister in law, Rachel, brings evidence that Matthew may be alive to the prison, David is compelled to search for him, which means breaking out of prison and getting to the truth. This book was very fast paced and entertaining throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend.
I received a review copy from Random House UK.
Harlan Coben King of the Thrillers has done it again .A fast paced, heartstopping roller coaster of a book .This is the story of David and the lengths he will go to for his son .Full of engaging characters ,twists and turns ,car chases ,it kept me guessing right to the end .Brilliant and breathtaking .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC .
Thank you for allowing me an advanced copy of this book. This was my first Harlen Coben book, however I have watched a couple of his television adaptions which I loved.
David is in Briggs jail serving a life sentence for bludgeoning his 3 year old son to death. He has no recollection of what happened that fateful night. He cuts off communication with all of his family for 5 years until one day his ex sister in law turns up with a picture of what looks to be his dead son, but he isn’t dead he is alive.
David creates a plan to escape jail and find his son with the help of his sister in law. I did find this a bit of a slow burner but it really picked up after David’s escape from jail. There were lots of twists and turns as the story came together some more believable than others. An enjoyable easy read. I’d definitely like to read more by this author.
David Burroughs is five years into his sentence for the brutal murder of his three year old son Matthew. Although David is adamant he didn't kill Matthew he feels he's exactly where he should be because he didn't protect his son. When his sister-in-law turns up with a photograph of a boy who looks exactly like Matthew, David begins to wonder how he can escape so he can track down his son.
Author Harlan Coben is the master of taking everyday situations and turning them completely on their head, I Will Find You is no exception. Lead character David Burroughs is a man who has given up on life, he's simply living one day at a time in prison. Guilt is eating him up. The period around the murder of his son remains a blur but David is insistent that he wouldn't do anything to hurt Matthew. Unfortunately all the evidence points to him having committed the crime.
The pace really picks up when David is shown a photograph and in the background is a boy who looks remarkably like Matthew. Deciding to break out of prison isn't to prove his innocence but to rescue Matthew and find out why he was framed for the murder. Escaping a maximum security prison is made easier by the fact that the warden is also his godfather, a lifelong friend of the family.
Once out of prison David is helped by his sister-in-law, Rachel, as they try to evade the police and track down witnesses who gave evidence against David at trial. Throughout the story are those little niggling questions; if David is telling the truth then how did the crime take place, why did someone frame him for murder and who is responsible? Slowly the pieces fall into place, not without a couple of twists.
Hot on the trail of David and Rachel are a couple of FBI agents, Max Bernstein and Sarah Jablonski. These characters make a fantastic double act and truly deserve a series of their own. The interaction between them swings from hilarious to alarming.
It was lovely to see a nod to some of the characters we know and love from Harlan Coben's other novels. Win Lockwood gets a brief mention, while Hester Crimstein plays a part in helping David and Rachel evade law enforcement.
Yes there are a lot of coincidences that help the story along but this is pure escapism so they can be easily overlooked.
A great read from Harlan Coben which was no surprise. This was fast paced and at times edge of seat stuff. The only thing I didn’t like was the ending seemed rushed. It was just suddenly there and I felt there was more the reader should have known.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased review.
David is in prison. He has murdered his own child, beaten him so badly that 3 year old Matthew is unrecognisable. David refuses to see anyone. He's consumed with guilt, unable to believe he's done such a terrible thing but also unable to remember that night. Then one day, his ex sister in law comes to see him and suddenly everything changes.
If you like Harlan Coben, you'll probably enjoy this. I can't say that I did. It was too plot driven for my liking with under developed characters. I've seen a couple of TV adaptations of his work which I have enjoyed even though the plots are unbelievable. This might work as a film but I prefer my books to have a bit more realism. Thanks to Penguin and NetGalley for the ARC
Thank you to #Netgalley and #Penguin for the copy of #IWillFindYou by #HarlanCoben
David is imprisoned for life for the murder of his young son.
Numb with grief he doesn’t fight it, he can’t remember that night.
The evidence puts him away, but he is sure of one thing he could not have murdered his child.
5 years down the line a lifeline is held in front of him.
Can it be true ? Is Matthew alive ?
But how ???
A thrilling read.
This was my first read by this author and I was hooked from the start. There was a bit of a stretch in the believability boundaries but I went with it and I throughly enjoyed the ride. Such a fast paced page turner. I devoured it in one sitting. I will definitely be reading more by this author.
Every new Harlan Coben novel comes with a heightened level of expectation for me, as I have loved every one but this has exceeded everything I expected. I finished reading it mere minutes ago and I am still breathless; it was the most intensely emotional and exhilarating book I have read in a long time. Harlan Coben is my favourite living writer because of the way he creates such ordinary, normal characters and propels them into the most extraordinary situations - never going so far outside the reaches of reality as to make things farcical. He creates characters that are absolutely real; they have imperfections but we love them and we root for them and we hold on to them right to the very last word and now, if I could, I'd be phoning some of these characters up just to say 'hello, how are you?'.
I can't wait to have this book in real life to read it all over again, and am grateful to NetGalley for approving me for an advanced copy simply so I can tell every thriller lover out there to buy this and wish them as much joy as I have had in reading it.
David Burroughs is five years into a life sentence for the brutal murder of his three year old son Matthew. Except he’s innocent which, of course, most inmates would say. However, his first ever prison visitor over those years is his sister in law Rachel who shows him something that gives us pause for thought and consider that he might, just might, be telling the truth. Rachel is a former investigative journalist, so can she help David to set the truth free?
First of all, let’s get the fact that I love Harlen Coben’s books out of the way and admit I’m probably a captive audience with this one! However, if the first few lines that narrator David utters don’t yank you in, I’d be surprised. You are in David’s head for a fair bit of this book with his memories, his varied feelings and the necessity of surviving a potentially brutal prison experience. It does become a suspend disbelief credulity stretcher but I just go with the flow as somehow Coben manages to get his readers to go along with his audacious plots and it is immersive escapist reading which is just what I need! It’s a tense rollercoaster of danger, fear, recklessness, bravery and desperation and it has you on the edge of your seat. There are some good twists along the way to the ending which is perhaps a little neat but not unexpected.
So why not five stars then since I clearly enjoy it so much? Well, there are two FBI agents SA Max Bernstein and SA Sarah Jablonski who spoil it for me especially at the start of their involvement. They act like a really annoying, irritating comedy duo and some of the dialogue that zips back and forth between them - yikes, does it ever jar. Bernstein definitely improves but I can’t get around the fact that I feel their first appearance is so out of place.
Overall though, let’s ignore those two clowns because at the end of the day, I’m entertained as usual by an author whose books I always look forward to diving into.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Random House UK, Cornerstone for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
David Burroughs is serving a prison sentence for murdering his 3-year-old son, Matthew. One day, his sister-in-law, Rachel comes to visit him in prison and brings a photo that a friend of hers took in a theme park. In the background of the photo is a boy who resembles David’s son, right down to the birthmark on his cheek. David must break out of prison, find out the truth and find his son.
This is another fast-paced page-turner by Harlan Coben with quite a large cast of characters, a bit of humour and some violence. I raced through it and enjoyed it immensely. However, for me, it follows a blueprint that Harlan Coben has tried and tested several times before – a plot built around a recent photo showing a loved one who supposedly died some time ago and Coben’s formulaic lead male character – a wronged father / husband, who is loving and virtuous, but who has a tendency to be cocky even in the most dramatic and dangerous of situations. This didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the novel and I would definitely recommend I Will Find You.
David is wrongly imprisoned for the murder of his son. David is trying to get through his prison sentence as painfully as possible so that he can make a new, uneventful life for himself. Then something happens to change his mind. A strong, fast-paced story with graphic violence, about as far from Richard Osman's cosy murder mysteries as you can get.
Harlan Coben is a machine (in a good way!). He always seems to know what works and what doesn’t when it comes to building a storyline and he always manages to write it in a way that bites onto you and doesn’t let go until the final moments. Another corker of a book and a go-to author for many!
An excellent book, I simply couldn’t put it down…just as you’d expect with a Harlan Corbin novel! A very clever plot & excellent main characters..
Oh my word! What a story!
I could not put this book down; it is so good.
Harlan Cobden is a master storyteller.
I won’t say anything about the story as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone,
but it is definitely a must read.
