It's the end of the summer on Fire Island and you maybe expect to find a left over hot dog or lost flip flop not a dead body! Rewind to the start of the summer and all the regulars are hiding behind a false holiday happiness and so anyone could be the victim and certainly anyone could be capable of murder!
The Hamptons are out and Fire Island is in. I'm obsessed with Americans summer vacationing and when there is gossip, bitchiness and murder then I'm all in! There is not one likeable character on the whole of Fire Island it seems (apart from the lovable ... student turned bar tender) and this is the perfect fodder for readers as you would gladly see any one of them murdered and all have murderous tendencies. I felt like a fly on the wall flitting behind closed doors and honing into whispered conversations. The fictional rich and wealthy are infamous for having a facade and I was there every time it slipped. Bad Summer People is Real Housewives gone wrong as it is overflowing with drama rather than thrills but I was happy to put my feet up with a cocktail and soak it all in. Loved it!
Bad Summer People was an extremely pacy and atmospheric summer read. A gripping thriller that didn't transcribe to the tropes and cliches often associated with a 'rich people on an island murder mystery' - the alternating POVs and weaving together of timelines was cleverly done, and I was left guessing til the reveal.
Much like the title "Bad Summer People" the contents of this novel sorely lacked in creativity.
I don't want to criticise a debut author too harshly, there is always room for improvement, but there was not one plotline in this story that I hadn't heard a hundred times before.
Usually, I enjoy seeing the debauchery of unchecked privilege with a dark undercurrent. That's why I picked up this book. But when none of the (way too many) characters have a tangible personality aside from "bad person", it becomes difficult to care about their dragging, unoriginal problems that in the end barely left an impact.
I wish just two people in this whole book had had a real conversation, something to show relationships and personal depths instead of only telling us about such things via superficial quasi-internal monologue. I wish we had spent a lot more time developing that and less on describing every woman's outfit in detail every single time.
I expected more scandal and definitely more fun from this story. All things considered it was unfavourably tame and serious.
And for the love of god, make the input of sensitivity readers an industry standard. The POC in this book might as well not be there and how did every description of a woman feel off-puttingly sexist, even in the women pov chapters?
This book is an absolute riot. So brilliantly observed, people you really love to hate behaving appallingly in the beautiful setting of Salcombe, with its yacht club and huge summer houses. I loved all the relationships and how they’d become twisted over the years. It’s so brilliantly observed, sharp and darkly hilarious. I found myself with a soft spot for people who had behaved awfully, and it made me think how I might behave under those circumstances. Quite a slow build, but I loved how the tension ramps up, and I was desperate to know what had happened. It’s really clever and I can’t stop thinking about it.
Good thriller about rich people doing bad things and a luxury holiday on an island going very wrong indeed.
Not sure about the many POVS - it got a bit confusing at times but I still enjloued it.
Bad Summer People is a phenomenal thriller from start to finish about rich glamorous people doing bad things. Filled to the brim with twists, gossip, and a captivating plot, this one is sure to keep readers hooked. The characters are well-developed. The story is incredibly fast-paced. This is one not to be missed! Highly recommended! Be sure to check out Bad Summer People asap.
I loved it! The elite on holiday. Wealthy, spoilt people with all the glamour. Funny and dark at the same time. A body, lots of suspects and gossip. A great read.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book to be honest. It did take a while to get into as there are lots of different characters which eventually all blend together creating a fabulous story. The various families all have their own stories which are very interesting and there was always something happening, so no chance to get bored. I predict a very popular summer read. I really enjoyed this book and I’m giving it 5 stars.
There are so many characters name dropped at the start of this book that I thought I would never be able to keep up. But then all these characters get their own POV (this might be the most POV's I have ever read in a book) which sounds daunting but actually helps to differentiate them.
It wasn't as thrilling as I hoped for but it's a quick, drama filled soapy read full of scandals and affairs. A fun summery beach read.
Great holiday read with love to hate characters and lots of twists and turns. Privileged, rich people all of whom have secrets, a body and a killer but no certainty of whom they both are until the last few pages
I enjoyed this book, it was interesting getting to know all the characters and how their stories unfolded and how it all comes together. Would recommend this book
A huge thank you to #netgalley and #emmarosenblum for my ARC I was a little late to the party with this one and it’s not my usual go to book but i really enjoyed it
I was hooked from the first few pages and wanted to know more, it took me a little while to get into it but it was overall a good read
Absolutely loved this book!
Emma Rosenblum you are amazing!
I was hooked throughout and couldn't put this book down.
Thank you for accepting my ARC request.
The epitome of a beach read. This was wildly entertaining and the perfect accompaniment for a day on the beach/ a flight/ the garden.
Told from multiple viewpoints this novel is set in Fire Ireland , this cast of characters are wealthy, untrustworthy, quiet horrible at times and others hilarious. There is sex, suspense, style and while the story is not the most original this will keep you turning the pages , rich people behaving badly and living excessively, I would be fully committed if this made its way to Netflix or similar. Perfect beach reading.
I read this book on holiday and loved the thought of the characters (rich, upper class New Yorkers) experiencing the events at a similar time and in a similar frame of mind as I read it. The multiple POV mechanism was well used and gave the experience of watching the events through a prism. I got a little lost towards the end when the reveal as to what had actually happened in the storm was being given but overall enjoyed this book which I’d liken to the TV series “White Lotus”.
I saw a few reviews on Instagram saying Bad Summer People was like Gossip Girl for adults and that sold me, thank you for approving me for a copy.
I really enjoyed this book and read it in a couple of sittings in the garden, with the multiple character pov’s I found that I was instantly immersed. I loved the rich people behaving badly storylines, this book really had it all. The Fire Island setting really made this a great summer read, I think the author did an amazing job at making it feel so vivid. Loved that the book started off with a mystery and it played out through all the drama, that really engaged me straight from the first chapter. I definitely agree with the reviews comparing Bad Summer People to Gossip Girl but also think it’s perfect for fans of White Lotus or Desperate Housewives.
An excellent debut, that I’ve already been recommending to family and friends. I look forward to seeing what’s next from this author!
Scandal, adultery and tennis!
This book reads like a series of the real housewives- if that level of melodrama appeals to you then this book is for you.
The setting is great for a beach read, however as befitting the title- these are bad summer people. If you’re not a fan of reading about wealthy, privileged people getting up to wealthy, privileged shenanigans I would give this one a miss.
With thanks to the author, publisher Michael Joseph, penguin random house and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book
A debut novel? Wow!!
Fire Island, New York, is where the rich decamp for summer each year. They may be on vacation, but there is still a hierarchy - led by Lauren Parker and Jen Weinstein. Their husbands spent their childhood summers there, and won't consider holidaying anywhere else. Mostly families and couples, Rachel Woolf is, as always, on her own but constantly on the lookout for a husband. As they decamp, they take with them nannies and supplies from the top stores in Manhattan. The adults spend their time playing tennis, ending in the annual tournament and with a new young hot male pro on the scene, there is more call for tennis lessons than ever before!
Oh, this is such a delicious, delectable read! With an amazing cast of characters and surprises round each corner, I was hooked from the very beginning and absolutely struggled to set the book aside when real life intervened. Reminiscent of the kind of blockbusters I read in the 1980's, I lapped up each and every word. So much going on, and all of it exciting and incredibly moreish. Without a doubt, Emma Rosenblum is one to watch. A fabulous read, definitely worth all five sparkling stars and my highest recommendation.
My thanks to the publisher for my copy via NetGalley; this is - as always - my honest, original and unbiased opinion.
Bad Summer People is the perfect summer read! If you love glossy American dramas where rich, privileged people do horrible things - then you will love this. Told from multiple narratives, Bad Summer People documents a summer on Fire Island where a group of rich New Yorkers converge on the town of Salcombe to play tennis, drink and have affairs - the summer ends with one of the residents dead. This is a compulsive, juicy read that is perfect for the sun lounger - I could not put it down! 4.5/5
Emma Rosenblum's 'Bad Summer People' is a glamorous murder mystery set on Fire Island. Each summer vacation, families return to their glamorous beach homes in the small town of Salcombe to relax in the sun, play tennis and attend parties. Sam and Jason have been best friends since childhood, but resentments also fester. Their wives have a surface relationship, but couldn't be more different. Lauren is focused on glamour and Jen is a kind psychologist. Thrown together with other families and acquaintances, secrets emerge that send cracks into the apparently fun and relaxed community. Anyone in Salcombe could have committed murder.
I found this a really fun page turner. The glamourous backdrop to the story added to it and I really enjoyed being inside the different characters heads and understanding their secrets and motivations. Released in time for the summer holidays, this is a brilliant book for taking away with you.
