I absolutely loved Do No Harm so I was so excited to read Conviction, but sadly I just could not get into it at all.
I quite enjoyed Do No Harm, even if it stretched credulity at times, so had high hopes for this. And what a premise it has too! I absolutely devoured the first 20% of this. Neve Harper gets a chance to be the defending barrister for Wade Darling, who shot his family then burned down his house. This is a career making case. In the first 10% we see how Wade’s barrister, Adrian, commits suicide by throwing himself under a train and Neve gets the job. She’s competent and driven, and this evidenced in the scene where she first meets Wade. In her personal life she’s grieving the disappearance of her husband. Her stepdaughter and her mother-in-law is all the family she has left. However one late evening her life is upturned when she is confronted by a frightening man on the tube who gives her an ultimatum: ensure that Wade is found guilty or her secret will be exposed and her family will be harmed. Now Neve has to make a decision. What will she choose?
What a hook this thriller has and what a captivating setup. Jordan’s writing is so accessible and easy to get into. I devoured the first 20%. However, unfortunately it wasn’t soon that the saggy middle set in and it wasn’t long until the story went downhill from there sadly for me. I just wasn’t a big fan of Neve and her sleepwalking episodes, which felt shoehorned in at times. Also her secret had me on the floor. Her reason for her secret was so baseless and silly. I just couldn’t connect with Neve after that. The woman needs to get medical help. She was ridiculous and made such poor decisions. I felt that she didn’t even need such a far fetched secret and just threatening her family should’ve sufficed. Would the antagonists really wait around for people to commit bad things before threatening them? There were just so many loopholes. I just couldn’t root for Neve and the fact that the whole book is narrated from her POV made this a slog to get through at times. The events in the trial was just so repetitive and stuff I’ve read in other courtroom thrillers.
I think what I preferred about Do No Harm is that there were 3 protagonists, so if you didn’t like one you at least others to root for. Please a multiple POV story just adds more pace and tension.
Unfortunately this just wasn’t for me. But other readers have given this five stars, so do yourself a favour and give this a go to decide for yourself because it might just be to your taste.
Conviction has a great story line and very strong characters which makes for an easy read. It was a page turner although at some places I did find the story a bit hard to believe and I would have liked a different ending for the main protagonist but that’s my preference obviously. But a great read from one of my favourite authors.
What a great read. The main protagonist is barrister Neve Harper who is living alone following her husbands disappearance 3 years ago. She is a complex character and I initially liked her but the results of her struggles with a number of moral dilemmas made her seem quite apathetic and amoral. You need to suspend your belief at the first page of the book as there are a few too many coincidences but nothing wrong with that. It’s a novel! All very enjoyable but the court case in particular I thought very well constructed. I could clearly hear Perry Mason speaking at times (sorry you need to be of a certain age to get this!)
Briefly, following the death of another barrister Neve has been handed a high profile case. Wade Darling is accused of killing his wife and children, and their horses, and then setting fire to the buildings. Neve is to be his defence lawyer. But his wife was a member of a crime family and they are determined that Wade will be found guilty. There is nothing they won’t do to ensure this.
Well written with a fast paced, tense storyline I read this in one sitting. The narrative is split between the court case and Neve’s story, both her past and the present moral dilemma she is facing. Twists and turns kept me constantly changing my mind about the guilt of the accused and the climax to the book was another real shocker. A great courtroom drama centred around a massive moral dilemma and I was engaged throughout, totally unputdownable. Loved it!
I was so excited to receive this book after reading and loving Do No Harm last year. This book did not disappoint and is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. Neve is a defence barrister who is tasked with defending Wade Darling, who has been accused of familicide. This is a case set to make her career, however she is soon approached by a mystery figure telling her she must lose the case or her darkest secret will be revealed. What follows is a tense, clever moral dilemma. I really enjoyed Neve’s predicament and found myself glued to the pages.
The characterisation was brilliant. There are strong developments and I felt myself rooting for Neve, despite her not always making the best choices. The story was very tense and suspenseful throughout, I kept having to read one more chapter so that I could see what happened next. I love it when a book is twisty, fast paced and has plenty of drama - you definitely get it in this one! Just when I thought I knew where it was going the rug got pulled out from underneath me. This is a book I will be talking to everyone about and recommending they purchase as soon they can. Thanks Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for my copy.
Neve Harper is a successful and ambitious barrister. When a colleague commits suicide she is asked to take over an infamous case he was working on. Although there is little time to prepare, Neve sees this as an opportunity to further her career. As Neve prepares her defense strategy she is approached by a stranger who threatens to reveal her darkest secret if she doesn't ensure her client is convicted.
Right from the opening page there is an air of mystery to this story. You're immediately asking questions. What is the crime that has happened? What happened to the previous barrister? The first question is answered relatively quickly, as for the second, there is a nagging doubt that we know the real answer.
Fans of Jack Jordan's previous novel, Do No Harm, won't be surprised by the premise of Conviction. The protagonist, Neve, is being blackmailed to ignore the ethics of her profession to ensure that her client is found guilty. The blackmail threat is actually twofold, not only is she being threatened with violence, there is the risk that her darkest secret will be uncovered.
Neve is a formidable character; intelligent, driven, resourceful. As the novel opened I had a lot of sympathy for Neve. Unfortunately this sympathy waned as the story progressed but it didn't stop me from willing her on, wondering if she would be able to overcome the obstacles in her path.
The story-line is fast paced, from the opening pages which are only a few days before the trial starts, to the trial itself which lasts only a few days. Conviction shows that the English judicial system is nothing like the American shows we regularly see on TV. Even though this removes some of the possible explosive elements of the story the compact timeline means that the momentum never falters as we wonder which direction Neve will take.
Wow! This is another fantastic thriller from Jack Jordan that had me hooked from the outset!
At the centre of this story is the trial of Wade Darling, a man who stands accused of killing his wife and two teenage children as they slept and burning their family home to the ground. For defence barrister Neve Harper, when the case lands unexpectedly on her desk just five days before the trial is due to commence, she knows it could make her career.
However, Neve finds herself in a terrible position when she is approached by a man on the tube as she is travelling home at night. He delivers her an ultimatum; throw the case and ensure Wade is found guilty or her secret about her husband’s disappearance three years ago will be revealed. Failing that, he will also kill everyone she cares about until she does as she is told. Neve must therefore decide if she will go against every principle her legal career stands for, or let the people she loves die...
Neve was such a fantastic main character and I always enjoy books that have a trial at their centre. From beginning to end, this story had me well and truly gripped! The pace and the tension never once let up and I found myself racing through the pages to find out what would happen next. I had my own thoughts about Wade’s trial as a result of the information that is revealed across the course of the book and ended up staying loyal to my initial instincts. I therefore couldn’t believe chapter 54!
I also thought it was clever how the situation surrounding Neve’s husband’s disappearance was so crucial to the story. It allowed us to see and understand her motivations and choices, especially because of the love she had for those closest to her and what she was so desperate to keep hidden. There were lots of things connected to this that took me by surprise, which I loved!
There were lots of other shocks throughout the book too, and as for the final few chapters, my goodness, what a rollercoaster! I love being able to imagine what might be in store next as a result!
I honestly cannot recommend this book highly enough and it deserves to be a huge success this summer!
Neve Harper is an up and coming lawyer who has just been handed the biggest case of her career, defending Wade Darling accused of familicide. Never mind that the evidence is stacked against him, that his previous lawyer died in suspicious circumstances or that you are still grieving over your missing husband.
Neve then receives a message - ensure that you lose this trial - or the lives of those you love will be in danger. Can she trade her own freedom for that of her client?
Definitely one of the best books I have read this year. Such a thrilling premise which draws you in and delivers page after page until a thrillingly satisfying conclusion. Its a brilliant courtroom drama but also a thrilling read as we discover the skeletons in Neve's own cupboards and the lengths she will go to to protect those she loves.
Conviction was chaos. This entire book was purely chaotic. The main character, Neve, is the barrister for Wade who has been charged with the murder of his wife and children. With press conferences, pushed hearing dates, and lack of police information, the court is practically against Wade. However, Neve has a secret of her own in the mix. I really liked Neves character, she was charming, extremely clever, and a bit of a misfit. She has a secret past that was incredibly interesting. This novel is mainly plot driven, however there is almost two seperate storylines running seperately but join together eventually. it was fast paced, thrilling, and most importantly the ending was excellent! I would happily purchase this book even after having a copy from Netgalley.
Wow, what a book! I couldn't put this tense thriller down. Neve is a barrister representing Wade Darling who is accused of killing his wife and children in a house fire at their home. But she has been approached by the Messenger who warns her that is she doesn't throw the case and make sure Wade is found guilty, then her dark secret will be revealed and those that she loves will be harmed! Keeps you guessing right up until the end

Conviction by Jack Jordon (Simon & Schuster, £14.99)
Published June 22, this was the sort of book that kept me up at night – I wanted to finish it before doing anything else. Barrister Neve Harper knows she’s got talent when it comes to the legal world but is unaware of entangled she’ll become with her most current case. Wade Darling is charged with murdering his wife and their two teenage children before attempting to burn the family home to the ground. It may be a career-making case for Neve, but not before she’s threatened by someone who is more than ready to tell the world something that would alter her life permanently. Can she be professional knowing that her personal safety – and that of others’ – is in jeopardy? The plot whizzes along and drips with detail, with plenty of courtroom drama for those who love watching it on the small screen. Definitely one to take your time with and savour.
Jack Jordan's Conviction follows Neve, a barrister who is about to take on a case that could make her career. Wade Darling is accused of murdering his wife and children and setting fire to their house; press interest has been intense, and Neve has been instructed to defend him after his last barrister committed suicide. However, just before Wade's trial is due to commence, Neve is approached by a man who reveals that he knows her darkest secret. If she doesn't ensure that Wade is convicted, he'll make the information public and destroy her life. But can Neve really refuse to defend a potentially innocent man?
SPOILERS FOLLOW.
This is a completely gripping thriller - comparisons to Steve Cavanagh's unputdownable books are not overstated. I very much enjoyed reading it, although I did think that it was overstuffed and that some aspects of the plot were not plausible. In particular, the sub-plot with journalist Melanie should probably have been cut. Firstly, it made no sense that Melanie would stake out Neve's house overnight simply because her husband went missing last year and she was now defending an infamous man - what did she think she would see? Secondly, Neve's decision to have Melanie killed to protect herself tipped the balance of her previously morally grey character too far for me. Before, Jordan had portrayed her much more sympathetically, but she crossed a line here - I couldn't root for her any more. I also didn't find it convincing that Neve would get off so lightly after she failed to lose the trial, even if her main blackmailers were dead or incarcerated - it was made out that they had links everywhere. The sleepwalking material was so interesting that it could have been a book in itself, and the ending inevitably felt rushed as Jordan tried to draw all these threads together. However, this is a satisfying legal thriller, and for me a step up from Jordan's Do No Harm.
I will post my review on Goodreads etc nearer the publication date.
3.5 stars
This book is incredibly readable... I picked it up and didn't put it down till I was finished a few hours later.
It had enough surprise moments to make me wonder where it was going next.
Nicely plotted, and enjoyable read.
Mr Jordan is definitely one to add to your tbr list.
Neve is given a case to defend which could make her career. A man, Wade, stands accused of killing his wife and two children. The evidence against him is damning, yet Neve vows to do her best to defend him. Wade's wife's family. the Viklunds, have other ideas though. They are determined to ensure that Wade is convicted and as a prominent criminal family they are used to getting their way.
The stress builds up enormously in this legal thriller. Neve's life is in danger, her husband is missing and she is sleepwalking every night, so much so that she is totally exhausted. Added to all this, she has a deadly secret, one which the Viklunds won't hesitate to use against her.
This is a very enjoyable if somewhat over the top thriller. Somehow you find yourself rooting for Neve even though she's done some very questionable things. I was genuinely fooled by some of the things that happen, thought that I had it all sussed out but I was wrong. So much so that I had to read the ending twice. For once, I didn't see everything coming. I look forward to Jack Jordan's next book!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
What an absolute whirlwind! After reading Jack Jordans last book, do no harm, I was dying to get stuck into this one and what a book it is!
It's got thr moral dilemma that really does get you thinking and you can't help but put yourself in the characters shoes. The tension is built up throughout and the books keeps going at a good pace. There's never any straying from the plot or paragraphs of pointless description to just up the word count.
The characters are so cleverly written and complex. These are real people woth real life experience and real choices and you get so ingrained in their loves and the outcome of their choices
I love thrillers and legal thrillers such ad this are definitely at the top of my list but this one blows most of the others away. It all just comes together so beautifully without feeling rushed or leaving any plot holes. And it's not perfect. Too many books go for that perfect ending but this one has all the twists and turns you could want but leaves off with a cliffhanger that will have your jaw on the floor! An absolutely work of art and a delight to read. I flew through it and couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the authors next installment. This is definitely the perfect summer book to get lost in over the holidays
Conviction - Jack Jordan
I was excited about reading this one after reading Jack Jordan's Do Not Harm, a fast and tense moral dilemma thriller in which a surgeon is under pressure to deliberately let a patient die.
Conviction is a moral dilemma legal thriller in which defence barrister Neve Harper is under pressure to ensure she loses the case.
I thoroughly enjoyed Do No Harm and love a good legal thriller so had high hopes.
There's a lot going on, the murder case, the threatening 'Messenger', Neve's home life with teenage stepdaughter, her husband who disappeared and the nagging mother in law. Personally, I thought a bit much going on, and lot to thread together and maintain momentum.
Perhaps because the focus wasn't on the defendant, but the court case didn't grip me the way I'd have hoped. The focus being on the what happens after the verdict takes some of the heat off the court case.
Not bad at all, but like I've said a lot going on, perhaps too much to really build up that crackling tension.
Thanks to Netgalley and Simon and Schuster Uk
WOW! Jack Jordan has done it again. If 'Do No Harm' had convinced me that Jordan was the best at moral dilemmas then 'Conviction' has me convinced that he is the absolute master.
Neve, a hard working defence barrister gets the case of a lifetime land on her desk. Wade darling, accused of murdering his family and then burning the house. Neve knows that if she wins this case, and proves her clients innocence that it could change her life.
A few days before the trial begins, Neve is approached on the train home, lose the trial or your secrets will be revealed. Lose the trial or the people you hold dear will be in danger.
Neve must chose between upholding her profession and giving her client a fair trial, or saving her family and her life.
This book had a way a keeping me needing to read more. I literally read it in under 24 hours. Jordan's writing has you emotionally connected to Neve, Wade and others.
With twists that you would never seen coming and a final sentence that had me screaming out loud, I have been struggling to find the right words to describe this master piece.
This is probably the easiest 5 stars I've given this year and easily the biggest contended for best book of the month (maybe even year.) Here is my one piece of advice to everyone reading this review. Go and buy this book when it's published in June. You will not regret it!
A massive thank you to @netgalley @simonandschuster @jackjordan_author for the ARC copy on Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.
My thoughts about Jack Jordan’s Conviction is a captivating crime court room thriller. I read conviction in one day and found myself gripped for the most part. The suspense brewing up as the book progressed was really impressive. Till the climax, it kept me on the edge of my seat. Jack Jordan’s Conviction first half of the book is pure storytelling, while the second half comes with lots of twists and turns. Jack Jordan’s Conviction also has full of suspense, epic scenery and story line and a fantastic finish. Writer Jack Jordan who had earlier written a breathtaking medical thriller Do No Harm, yet again delivers a gripping thriller which is in from a different thriller genre that is more convincing. The story of Jack Jordan’s Conviction story begins with Wade Darling stands accused of killing his wife and teenage children as they slept before burning the family home to the ground. When the case lands on barrister Neve Harper’s desk, she knows it could be the career making case she’s been waiting for. But only if she can prove Wade’s innocence. A matter of days before the case, as Neve is travelling home for the night, she is approached by a man. He tells her she must lose this case or the secret about her own husband’s disappearance will be revealed. Failing that, he will kill everyone she cares about until she follows orders. Neve must make a choice betray every principle she has ever had by putting a potentially innocent man in prison, or risk putting those she loves in mortal danger. All an all Jack Jordan’s Conviction, has all the key elements of a good thriller. There is the consistent element of tension, elevated suspense and mystery and well written characters and provides several thrilling moments, and a couple of shocking twists. I would like to say a big thank you to author Jack Jordan, publishers Simon And Schuster and NetGalley, for kindly approving me to read and review this brilliant book I’ve enjoyed reading. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥💥💥
Jack Jordan returns with this summer’s most addictive thriller!
If Do No Harm established Jack Jordan as the king of the moral dilemma thriller, Conviction cements him as the master. WHAT. A. BOOK!! It is absolutely relentless in its tension, continually dialling it up as another twist of fate propels the narrative forward. The format works spectacularly, splitting the narrative into different parts: the establishing dilemma, the prosecution’s case and then the defence’s. Framing the narrative around the impending trial meant that suspense was built from multiple angles and the courtroom scenes were absolutely fraught with tension. Prepare to bite EVERY nail to the quick! The moral dilemma at the heart of the plot is serpentine and twists readers on multiple levels, creating that gut-churning tension familiar from Jordan’s previous novel Do No Harm. He places the reader smack bang in the middle of the narrative and I throughly enjoyed feeling every splinter of agony, fear and desperation that the characters did. This novel is constructed to perfection and as such, is virtually impossible to put down. It’s a rollercoaster of a ride that will glue you to your seat. It’s really well paced, taking a fragment of time to build Neve’s story, hooking readers in and allowing them to form a bond with her. After the first few establishing chapters and once the gravity of her predicament becomes clear, the pace hurtles along at breakneck speed, twisting and turning in the most sensational ways. If you enjoy a book that leaves you breathless, Conviction should shoot straight to the top of your wishlist.
The real power of Jordan’s writing is his ability to create a questionable and on some level, unlikeable, character and still make you care about them. I was wholeheartedly rooting for Neve throughout, despite her nefarious past. She’s a beautifully complex character and Jordan expertly crafts her so that we come to know her gradually, like peeling back the layers of on an onion individually. There were times where I felt conflicted by the prospect of her getting away with her crimes, but as more and more of her truth came to the surface I knew that she simply HAD to! I loved how Jordan took his time to reveal Neve’s full story. It allowed me to form a bond with her, feel all of her emotions and become fully invested in her plight. Similarly, Jordan very cleverly builds both the prosecution and defence cases in Wade Darling’s trial, meaning that as a reader we form our own convictions whilst being the master puppeteer that he is and unbeknown to us, Jordan is leading us down a certain path. When the proverbial rug was pulled out from underneath me, I was genuinely gobsmacked! It flipped the story with as much of a thwack (wait until you read this…this word will send shivers down your spine forever more!) as some of the most iconic twists of the genre and made me reevaluate everything I had felt reading the novel up to that point. Don’t you just love when a book does that to you!?
Conviction is set to be one of summer’s most compulsive reads, so I hereby call this court to order and sentence you all to pre-order it immediately. I say these words with whole-hearted conviction…and you can thank me in June! 😉
