I had already read this long before the time it was approved to listen to on here. It's a thoroughly great read. I enjoyed the inside perspective of the case. I rated it 4 stars at the time.
The audio narration itself was really good but the story just turned out to be so average. The premise is all there a child that is murdered and shockingly the mother's lover turns out to be the prime suspect. It is the introduction to Mike Walker and Pat North, who begin the process of apprehending their suspect and building a case, that sets the scene for the investigation to unfold. As a crime novel there is nothing specifically wrong but it just didn't work for me.
I just reviewed Trial and Retribution by Lynda La Plante. #TrialAndRetribution #NetGalley #audiobook
Absolutely BRILLIANT!! Love audiobooks when they have a good narrator and this guy was AMAZING!! Made the story so much more enjoyable and kept me gripped!
Need to download the second audiobook in this series now!
I truly recommend this audiobook!
It has been many years since I watched the tv version of Trial & Retribution. I loved that then and it's fair to say I loved the audiobook version now. I could not recall at all what happened in the tv series, but what I could visualise as I listened to the audiobook were many of the actors.
Colin Mace the narrator does an excellent job at putting the pace of the story across to the reader, but also delivers on the different accents.
There are plenty of characters in this novel to get used to, so pay attention! But it is everything you would expect from La Plante, a well paced criminal investigation followed by the legal wranglings of a court case. What's not to like? Love crime you'll love this audiobook.
This being the first in a series you have plenty more to look forward to.
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️stars
Although a bit bit of slow burner, it is well worth sticking with this book. Beautifully written and truly a masterpiece.
Veery procedural. You really need to like that stuff to like this book. Otherwise there is little else getting you excited in this novel.
I got this as an audio book thinking I would really enjoy it. I did like the narrators voice but the story just wasn't for me.
Trial and Retribution by Lynda La Plante and Narrated by Colin Mace was Brilliant from start to finish, especially as its apart of a brilliant series!. Lynda has a way of writing that will have you hooked, that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. Then wanting more when her books in that series has finished. I always find her books like a drug......I need more! and this book was No different!
I highly recommend this audiobook its brilliant!
This was a brilliant book. From yhe start I was already hooked and on yhe edge of my seat. Once again, this author created such a wonderful sense of atmosphere and tension. I was so close to giving this book full marks. I listened to the audiobook and really liked the narrator they really made the book a much better experience, and obviously, my eyes loved me for it. I just loved that I can speak up the book to my pace, and it doesn't affect the quality of the reading experience. I just loved this author's stories, and this one definitely was extremely interesting. I definitely recommend reading this book.
So much praise goes out to the author and publishers for creating another amazing book. I can't wait to read more.
The above review has already been placed on goodreads, waterstones, Google books, Barnes&noble, kobo, amazon UK where found and my blog https://ladyreading365.wixsite.com/website/post/trial-and-retribution-by-lynda-la-plante-bonnier-books-4-stars under my name ladyreading365
Trial and Retribution Book 1.
What a great read/listen this one. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the narrator did a fantastic job.
A disturbing story - Every parents worst nightmare. While playing on the estate a young girl goes missing. There is an all out search to find her.
Has anyone seen her, trying to find as much info as possible and hoping all the while she's just playing somewhere she shouldn't have gone.
When a witness is found who had seen the young girl playing the police are not convinced how credible she is.
A moving, heart wrenching story line filled with tension.
I would recommend.
I have always wanted to listen/read a Lynda la plante book but just never got around to it. I am glad that I have now listened to my first one and will look for others.
The narration worked really well. There was enough suspense and interest/twists to keep you really interested. The ending really tied everything up overall so glad I took the opportunity
I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own
Quite enjoyed this audio book although was a bit disappointed with the ending its not one of Lynda La Plantes best
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in exchange for a honest review.
I love Lynda La Plante books but this is the first audiobook o have listened to of hers.
It kept me guessing throughout. The story line as always for La Plante was gripping with twists and turns!
The narrator did a brilliant job I thought and I would definitely recommend.
This is a disturbing story about a murdered child – not for the faint-hearted. A small girl goes missing after playing in the playground of her estate. Her distraught pregnant mother is desperate to find her. There is a witness who saw the youngster with a man – but she is elderly, and not necessarily a reliable witness. Several of the inhabitants of the estate point to the local alcoholic as the likely culprit, and the police end up arresting him for the murder. But there is very little evidence, and he insists throughout that he’s not guilty. Were the police just clutching at straws? Or did they have the guilty party? The narrator Colin Mace was wonderful, using a variety of different accents for the multitude of characters, which he really brought to life. I enjoyed the police team and their interactions, as well as the courtroom scenes. I found this gripping, upsetting and tense – in other words, a great crime thriller.
Trial and retribution is a fantastic crime thriller which will keep you guessing until the end. When a little girl goes missing and is later found murdered, the investigation leads to a local man. Following both the police investigation and the subsequent trial, the attention to detail and character depiction is enthralling.
I would highly recommend this novel to fans of courtroom dramas. It has a completely real life authenticity about it that I found refreshing. The narrator also added another level of enjoyment to the book.
I am so very late to the party but I absolutely loved this and will be making my way through Lynda Le Plante's back list as fast as humanly possible.
I am pretty sure I have read this before, but I carried on listening as the story is gripping. I must admit I had a twist in my head that wasn't the actual twist, so I guess I got fooled twice.
The story is dark and upsetting. Don't read it if you are sensitive. I guess the description will be enough of a trigger warning for most. As usual, Lynda La Plante tells a tale so well that I was transported to the site of the horror. Read it if you are hard core
As soon as you start this book, you know that you are in Lynda La Plante territory. It has all the gritty hallmarks with larger than life characters, gruesome crime, twists and turns. If you are sensitive to the thought of child murder/molestation then perhaps avoid this one as it is rather disturbing for a while. Other than that, you will get the usual mix of flawed humanity mixed with those trying to get a crime solved.
I really enjoyed this book.
The characters had qualities that I didn’t particularly like but it came across as though this was intended.
The imagery, whilst describing some of the more troubling elements in the book, was eerily beautiful.
The narration was very atmospheric and the narrator really added to the scene setting.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for gifting me this arc in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
It needs to be acknowledged that the original print version of this book is more than 25 years old, and as such things, namely policing, forensics & associated fictional stories, have moved on in that quarter of a century. As such there are some aspects of this book that feel a little dated; however, this did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the book.
Although I have watched several television dramas of Linda La Plante’s books I have not watched any of the Trial & Retribution, nor have I read any of the books. Therefore, I came at this not knowing what the story would be but expecting masterful storytelling from such a prolific & successful author.
I found the storyline held my interest from beginning to end, concentration was required at times as the story moves from character to character, but is easy to follow and this adds to the depth of the story.
When the narrator opened with a strong cockney style accent I was somewhat put-off; however, this quickly became easy to listen to and I found the differentiation between characters & the voices used to portray them added to the overall enjoyment of the audiobook.
I did enjoy listening to this audiobook. Although I found it interesting and engaging I’m unsure whether I would listen to any more of the series. However, this is because of the dated feel of some of the story, as it is not as fast-paced as more modern books in this genre (although I am fully aware that the forensic & police work is not as fast-paced as readers/listeners are led to believe) and this has become my baseline from which I judge other audiobooks in the same genre.
I would recommend listening to this book as it is a good story told well. I can see how it lent itself to TV dramatisation, but by ‘modern day’ standards I found the pace of the actions within the book a little slow.
